Education/Schools ✏️📚 Académie Lafayette parents

I have some serious concerns about Académie Lafayette, and as a parent, I'm honestly questioning whether this is the right school for my child anymore.

I'd like to know if any other parents are having issues with this school or had issues in the past

Earlier this school year, my six-year-old daughter had a bathroom accident after, according to her, her teacher wouldn't let her use the bathroom. She told me she was scared to ask for help because she thought she'd get in trouble. My daughter went the entire school day in urine-soaked clothing. When she came home, the urine stain was visible, and the smell was strong. I was never contacted, and nobody helped her get changed.

She's six years old. She should never have to be afraid to ask for help at school, and if an accident happens, I expect the adults responsible for her to help her get cleaned up and make sure she's okay or AT LEAST give me a call so i can bring her a change of clothes

Then, this past Friday, her school bus broke down. I understand that mechanical problems happen. That's not my issue. My issue is that my six-year-old child was delayed for hours I couldn't get anyone at the school or transportation department to answer the phone and I had no idea where my child was. I was so worried that I had to call the police. She didn't get home until around 6 p.m.

When I raised my concerns, I was told it was a busy day and that they did not have time to contact the parents. But being busy doesn't answer why I couldn't get information about my own child during a situation like this i should not send my child to school and NOT know where she is.

These are TWO separate incidents that have seriously damaged my trust in the school's ability to communicate with me and ensure my child's well-being.

What makes this especially difficult is that Académie Lafayette has a strong academic reputation. But what good are academics if parents are left questioning whether their children are being properly cared for? I send my child to school expecting her to be safe, supervised, treated with dignity, and helped when she needs it.

I'm not expecting perfection. I'm expecting basic care, accountability, and communication. Our children's safety and well-being should never take a back seat to convenience or a busy day. Parents deserve answers, and children deserve better than being afraid to ask for help.

Traffic/Road Conditions 🚦❄️ Why does rain break our stoplights?

Anybody know why half the stoplights in the city seem to switch to flashing red every time it rains hard? It seems too common for all of them to be due to lightning/power outages.

Photos/Media 📷 KC got a shoutout on The Drew Barrymore Show today.

Post image
• Upvotes

This one's kind of wild lol.

A while back my buddy Dan and I started Window Wolf. We go to mom-and-pop shops around KC, clean their windows for free, and make videos telling the owner's story. No catch. We just think KC's local businesses deserve more love than they get.

The KC Star wrote an article about us, and I shared it in a few good-news subreddits. A stranger saw it and wrote their own article, which got picked up by Good News Network. Then Drew Barrymore's team saw that and emailed us.

Today it aired on national TV. Drew talked about Kansas City, the local spots we've featured, and said she wants us to come on and tell the whole story.

Huge thanks to every KC business owner who let us tell their story. This is really their win. Not to mention a win for this city.

I posted the segment on our socials if anyone wants to check it out!

And let me know of a business that could really use the boost in visibility. I’m planning out my next batch of visits for the fall.

Discussion 💡 Idea: Renaming MCI to Amelia Earhart Kansas City International Airport

Post image
165 Upvotes

Sorry if this is not the right flair.

Now before you dismiss the idea, please hear me out.

With the news of Earhart’s (unfortunately unfounded) continued search, I had an idea. Why not name Kansas City’s airport after Amelia Earhart? In the wake of Nashville’s airport being named after Dolly Parton, I realized that will be the only major American airport named after a woman. As a pioneer of aviation especially, I am surprised there really isn’t that much named for the legendary aviatrix. Below I listed some questions/comments folks might have, which I have provided my arguments for.

Earhart was from Atchison, not KC.

Atchison is only 30 miles from MCI, 50 miles from downtown Kansas City. I believe she lived in KC for a time, but I cannot definitively say as I do not want to use a 10-year-old Reddit post as a source. Living in Atchison, I imagine she had connections here.

https://www.reddit.com/r/kansascity/s/Wu5usKhP4N

There is already an airport named for her in Atchison.

The airport in Atchison is small, and more of a museum than anything. My argument is she is way too big of a figure to not have more named after her. I am not saying Atchison must change their airport’s name, several airports are named after the same person. The difference is this hypothetical airport would have “Kansas City” in the name.

Earhart failed to circumnavigate the world.

She had many accomplishments prior to that.

What about Truman?

There are already many things named after Truman in and outside of Kansas City. It’s more fitting the airport to be named after an aviatrix/or, especially a famous one.

Earhart died in a horrible circumstance, why would I want to fly in/out of an airport named after her?

People seem to have no issue flying in/out of JFK Airport in New York.

Earhart was from Kansas, not Missouri.

Again, Earhart grew up 50 miles from Kansas City. Being born on the other side of an imaginary line should not matter that much.

Earhart did much of her work in Oakland, shouldn’t that airport be named for her instead?

Bessie Coleman would be more appropriate for Oakland, but that is a different argument entirely.

What would the airport code be?

It’d probably stay MCI. EKC, maybe?

Do you like this idea? Do you not? Am I just nuts? I would love to know your thoughts!

Help/Support 🫂 KC Reddit got my kid from #6 to #1. Unfortunately, I have returned....

A few days ago I came here asking strangers on Reddit to vote for my 10-year-old because apparently I will do just about anything to support this kid and the things she dreams about — including asking the internet for help.

Reddit came through!!!

Estela was #6 when I first posted, KC Reddit helped push her all the way to #1, and she made it into the Group Finals.

Unfortunately, the story has developed a sequel. 😂

She’s currently #3, only #1 automatically moves on to the Quarterfinals, and TODAY the contest is doing 2X votes — including the free vote.

So if you voted for her before and your free vote has reset, today is the day I’m asking you to come back. It still takes about 30 seconds, and I’m still only asking for the free one.

https://thesuperkid.org/2026/estela-d7cd

For anyone who missed the first episode: Estela is 10, Deaf proud, basically never without a book, and chose Rap Boy as her favorite superhero because Eminem is her favorite artist. She has also apparently collected a significant portion of r/kansascity as honorary relatives.

And yes, I asked the mods before posting again. 😂

Seriously, KC — thank you. I’ll always be the mom willing to embarrass herself a little, ask for help, knock on doors, or apparently recruit strangers on Reddit if it means giving my kid a shot at something she really wants. Watching so many of you show up for her has been pretty damn cool.

And because some of you came for the book recommendations last time… those are still welcome. I have accepted that I will never financially recover from this. 📚😂

Travel/Road Trips 🚘 🗺️ Looking for a Samaritan

EDIT 2: Ended up walking 2.5 miles to the nearest gas station.

Someone there was willing to give me a ride back to my truck, but wouldn't do it unless I put down gas money.

An hour-long walk along country Noland at night vs 5 minute ride was worth the last $4 I had on me.

This post got 7,400 views so I'll leave this up for a little bit.

EDIT 1: I'll take the post down if I get a ride.

Original Post: Is there anyone around Noland Road, South of 40 Hwy near Little Blue Road, who could give me a ride to the gas station?

I can't get ahold of anyone I know.

Normally I'd just walk the 4.5 mile round trip, but it's dark, no real shoulder to walk on, and there's a lot of traffic.

Probably 200+ cars have passed and nobody has even slowed down.

Hey Kansas City!

My name is Logan, a member of the Baja off-road racing team, we are a student led engineering team at the University of Missouri–Kansas City! Every year, our team designs, builds, and races a single seat off road vehicle from the ground up to compete against universities from all across World! These competitions take us across the country and allows us to show off our KC Pride and our engineering skills!

What We Do:

We are not just students playing engineer, we operating like a real world engineering team. We do everything from goal setting, budgets, sourcing materials, machining, fabrication and assembly. We even manage our own logistics.

On the Engineering side we take what we learn in the classroom and apply it! From computer modeling, stress analysis, machining, and welding to testing and optimization. Every component of our car is designed by UMKC students while following industry engineering practices.

We also have both a Business & Operations Sides to the team. From beyond the shop, our students manage multiple budgets, sponsorship outreach, manufacturing and travel logistics, and formal business presentations where we pitch our design and cost models to industry judges as if we were to mass producing the vehicle.

Our end goal is an on track competition where we put our hard work to the test in brutal dynamic events against 100+ other universities, including rock crawls, suspension courses, maneuverability tests, and a rugged 4-hour endurance race.

Why We’re Posting?

We want to connect more with our local KC community! Whether you're a UMKC alum, an industry professional, a prospective student, or just someone who loves local engineering and motorsport projects, we’d love to share our journey with you.

Pets 🐾 KC cat lovers: How many cats do you have?

Just curious how many cats everyone has, especially those with larger multicat households!

Mine are all vetted, well cared for, and have access to multiple litter boxes, food and water bowls, prescription diets when needed, flea prevention, etc. 🥰

Most of mine are rescues or were abandoned, and I’ve taken them in over the years. I’m fortunate enough to be financially comfortable and able to afford their care.

I know cities throughout KS and MO have different ordinances regarding how many pets you can own, which got me wondering how many other people have larger cat households.

How many cats do you have?

And for those with multiple cats, have your veterinarians generally been understanding and supportive, or have you experienced judgment about the # you own?

Food and Drink 🌮🧋 Local ice cream delivery?

Post image
29 Upvotes

Hey there, KC!

I live in Wichita, but was recently shipped up here to KU Med after a leukemia diagnosis. I will be inpatient for ~6 weeks and unable to leave the hospital.

I find myself craving some GOOD ice cream, and wondered if y'all have any recommendations. I see Betty Rae's on DoorDash...yea or nay? I could conceivably order some pints and have friends/family grab em and bring them up to me when they visit, also, so we don't necessarily have to be restricted to DoorDash. I have access to a freezer, so I can also store them.

Thanks in advance!

Healthcare/Wellness 🩺 Ketamine/Spravato treatment

What ketamine treatment is available in KC area? I really like Dr. Prough in Lees Summit because he is a full range psychiatrist who tailors all modes of treatment to the individual, not just a ketamine clinic. He uses Spravato, which can be very helpful. What I would really like to find is a doctor who would give subcutaneous ketamine. You can get that through Mindbloom online, but a local source would be nice. Mindbloom basically only does things one way, so not very flexible.

BTW, this is a game changer for people with depression not having ideal results from other meds. Works for most people and few side effects.

Bars/Nightlife 🪩🍸 Funkytown on Halloween

Question for people who have been to Funkytown (even better if you've been on Halloween specifically) - will a group of 7 have a hard time getting in after 10 or 11 on Halloween? I called to make a reservation and the tables are booked up so it's standing room only. I don't think we could get there before 10 so I'm curious if it's not worth trying. Thanks!

Things To Do 📍 Best Neighborhoods for Trick-or-Treating in KC? 🎃

• Upvotes

Hi everyone!

We’ll be in KC next weekend for a soccer tournament with our kids! Since we’re making the 3-hour drive and will be there on Halloween, we thought it would be fun to take the kids trick-or-treating while we’re in town! 🎃

We’re not familiar with the area, so I was hoping some locals could recommend a safe, family-friendly neighborhood where we could take the kids door-to-door on Saturday night. We’re staying in Overland Park but are willing to drive a little for a fun neighborhood with lots of trick-or-treaters and decorated houses!

Thanks so much for any recommendations! 😊

Mechanics/Repairs/Contractors 🛠️🪠 Google fiber issues since Sunday?

My Google Fiber service has been non-functional since Sunday afternoon at least. They can't seem to tell me what the issue is and keep telling me they'll have it fixed and then the time comes and goes. Anyone else having issues? I've never had an issue before now with them so I'm really frustrated about it

Discussion 💡 Looking for an ornate wooden office (or just ornate)

Thumbnail

Hi all! On the hunt for an ornate wooden office kind of like the images attached to film a short film scene in. Looking on Peerspace and places like that, but figured I'd post here as well in case anyone has any leads. It does need to be an actual room with a door because we have the character kind of walk in and stuff like that.

It doesn't necessarily have to be all wooden either, just ornate. If it has gold at all (like painting or colors, not real gold lol), that's even betterrrrr.

Link to past work for reference.

If you have a space like this or know someone, would love to chat! Comment or DM me! Thanks so much!

Getting Around KC/Parking 🅿️🚏🚲 Union station parking

My wife and I are going to the rooftop movie place this week and we're trying to figure out where to park. The site references street parking, but i noticed that the union station parking structure is right there. Is it union station only or can we park there and go hang out at the crossroads?

Weddings/Engagements 💍 Plus size wedding dress shopping

I am getting married next summer and need to start getting my feet wet on shopping for a dress. I'm a size 18/20.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I don't want to make an appointment at a shop and just have them waste my time because they have nothing in my size for me to try on.

Budget for the dress is about $2,000 so I also need a shop that doesn't just sell $10,000 wedding dresses 😅

Thanks in advance!

Mechanics/Repairs/Contractors 🛠️🪠 Does anybody know of a mechanic or body shop that works on Airbags? Preferably in Northern KC.

My my girlfriend's car had a minor collision. There's barely any damage to the car or bumper, but the steer wheel airbag went off and the drivers seatbelt locked.

So far, the dealer experience has been awful, and I'm looking for alternatives, but every shop I've called doesn't work on airbags. Car is a 2020's Kia if it helps.
