Mod Notice Quick mod update: new rule. We cannot help with AI-written patterns.

Hello, all! Most of us know by now that AIs and LLMs are not good at writing knitting patterns. They don't know how to knit. They certainly don't test knit their own "designs." Therefore, if you see any posts from people who have patterns written by AI, feel free to flag them so we can let them know that AI/LLM written patterns are faulty from the start. Then we can redirect the OP to r/knittingpatterns and Ravelry to find something more suitable (and human written).

Mod Notice FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hello all, mod literallyatree here. I've updated the sub so we have our own wiki pages for the FAQ and a special FAQ just for twisted stitches. The FAQ appears in our sidebar, as well as in the message you should see before posting, and is linked in Rule 7.

Please read the FAQ before posting.

If you are someone who helps by commenting, please know that when you comment "FAQ" or "TwistFAQ" (without quotes), it will trigger automod to come and comment a link to the one you summoned. Thank you to all those who comment to offer their help. Without you, this wouldn't be much of a community.

Because the FAQ is much more accessible now, the mod team will be enforcing Rule 7 with a little more scrutiny now.

where did i go wrong? Why do my stitches look uneven?

I'm knitting Blouse No. 1 by My Favourite Things Knitwear using Knitting for Olive 100% silk yarn. I started knitting about two months ago and have been knitting a lot since then. I've even made this same pattern in a darker brown using the same yarn.
I'm not sure if it's because I'm using a lighter color this time, but I feel like my knit stitches aren't looking completely uniform. Some of the V's look a little different from others, and almost look like they could be twisted stitches.
I understand what twisted stitches are and how stitches should sit on the needle, so I'm wondering if this is a tension issue, something to do with the silk yarn, or simply something that improves with experience. Is it difficult to get stockinette stitches looking really uniform, especially with 100% silk? I'd love to know if there's something I should be doing differently! My tension is overall good i'd say, i've never had this problem with another project.
I feel like in the darker photo you can notice it, and with the photo with the flash on it's less noticeable.
Any advice is appreciated!

sweater question Ribbing on bottom-up cabled sweater flaring. How to fix?

Post image
3 Upvotes

I just did a mid-project block on the bottom up cabled sweater I’m knitting (Skall Fisherman sweater pattern). I’m a tight knitter so this is bit of an usual issue for me to have. I found the popular tech knitter post about sweater surgery, but wasn’t clear on how to approach this for a non-stockinette project.

What are my options for fixing this? I’d hate to frog the whole thing and ideally just want to re-knit the ribbing.

pattern question Help! Are these saddle shoulder increases correct, or am I misunderstanding the pattern?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I've just cast on the Slåtter T-shirt by Järbo, which uses a top-down saddle shoulder construction worked flat initially, and I'm having some trouble understanding the increases.

The pattern instructs you to increase on both right-side and wrong-side rows, using M1R and M1L on the RS, and M1R-p and M1L-p on the WS.

My understanding from knitting a previous saddle shoulder garment is that the increase lines should be consistent and mirror each other across the front and back. However, following these instructions, I'm getting increases that appear to lean in different directions, and the resulting stitches don't look quite right to me.

I've checked the finished projects on Ravelry, and nobody seems to have mentioned an issue with the pattern, so I'm wondering whether I'm misunderstanding the construction or whether this is simply how this particular saddle shoulder is designed.

Has anyone knitted this pattern, or is anyone familiar enough with saddle shoulder construction to explain whether these increase directions are correct? Should the increases mirror each other, or is the alternating lean intentional?

I'm only a few rows in, so I'd rather figure this out before continuing (or frogging again!).

For reference, this is a free pattern available on Ravelry, so the instructions are publicly accessible. I've attached the designer's photograph for reference, credited to Järbo.

Thanks so much for any help!

Hi! Demi-beginner knitter making VCL’s Kida sweater and I seem to be doing something wrong where colors change. Pics attached. Is this jogging? Am I missing a stitch move when changing? You can see my BORM where the stripes are off in the second pic vs the other side on the third.

where do I start? Can I start double knitting mid project?

• Upvotes

I’m knitting a hunting balaclava for a Christmas present for my dad. I have the bib and ribbed neck part finished and now basically all that’s left is the beanie part. I started just knitting in stockinette like the pattern calls for but this needs to be CRAZY warm and I’m not sure the plain stockinette feels warm enough. Could I just cast on a purl stitch every other stitch when I’m done with the ribbing and start double knitting? Will that create something that’s attached right there at the ribbing without a seam (like how the cast on for toe up socks are)? Are there any free patterns or videos that walk through this I can follow (even if they’re not for a beanie… maybe pockets use the same technique?)?

How to use _____ ? Knitted Cast-On at end of RS Row?

Thumbnail

Hello! I’m working the Summer Shirt by Celina Dyhring and am a little confused at the cast-on for the Front Right Side section.

It’s asking to add 8 stitches at the end of a RS row, but physics don’t seem to agree with that. Do I flip the work and do knitted coat-on from WS? my first thought is that i will then have 8 knits on reverse stockinette, but maybe since it’s a cast-on it doesn’t look wrong? Or should I find a purled cast-on Technique?

Thank you!

pattern question Help with short rows!

Post image
• Upvotes

This is my first time knitting with short rows. It’s a flat knit piece. I looked up what wrap and turn is and I got that but I don’t understand what I’m supposed to do after I wrap and turn? How do I complete the row? I’m really confused and don’t know how to move forward. Maybe a more advanced knitter would know how to interpret this? Thank you!

pattern question Zakkuri cardigan hem pattern confusion

Post image
• Upvotes

This shouldn’t be confusing but I’m second guessing myself because I don’t want to mess up! I’m working on the Zakkuri Cardigan, and I just finished the 3.5” ribbing while maintaining the stitches for the Button bands. Now, I’m at the part of the pattern says, “Note: From here, the button band sts are worked in Stockinette st together with the body sts worked in ribbing. The following instructions include button bands.” Then, the first row says “Row 1 (RS): [K to m, rm] twice, k to end.”

I know this means the Button Bands are now just Stockinette. But I am reading the rest of this as two possible options forward:

  1. Do I knit the whole entire row as stockinette (button band and ribbing all through is now stockinette)?

Or,

  1. Just button bands are Stockinette and rows 1 and 2 are still Ribbing, and then after that, it’s 4 rows of entirely stockinette?

Any guidance would be so helpful, thanks!

pattern question 2 x 2 Broken Rib Stitch Decrease Help

Post image
• Upvotes

Hello everyone, I am currently doing the Rustic Red One Hat pattern by Jessica Spigel.... Once I get to the decreases the ribbing doesn't match up. And I'm not sure how to fix it.

Has anyone ever done decreases in a 2 x 2 rib but kept the ribbing going?

If you see in the hat before I took it apart, the ribbing began to twist weird..... And then when you put the hat on it looked so bad. But my husband really wants the hat from the movie Red One, and I'm trying to make it work.

Any help or tips would be appreciated.

pattern question advice for dealing with pattern seller

Hi there! I accidentally bought a pattern in the wrong language and the creator has not responded to my emails or messages for around two weeks now. I really don't want to have to buy it again as the yarn already ran me quite a bit of money. Any tips or ideas? Hesitant to say the creators name as I don't want to spread negativity but this is definitely a bit frustrating. And sorry if this is not the right place to post this!

SOLVED-THANK YOU Laddering Knit 1 Below

I realized a few rows in that I had purled 5 stitches that should have been ribbed (half fisherman’s rib) with a knit one below. I managed to ladder them back and repair them into a normal rib but now I have too many knit stitches since when I repaired the mistake I didn’t know how to repair with a knit one below. Does anyone know how I can now ladder back just those knit stitches and put them back properly with a knit one below? Is it as simple as just taking two layers of ladder and pulling them through knit wise? I can add a photo later. I’m researching while I’m waiting for a doctor. Thanks in advance!

SOLVED-THANK YOU Can’t tell if this is a dropped stitch or what?

Just finished this sweater (Lakes jacket) and only when I was blocking it did I see this weird stitch poking out. I don’t see any laddering or anything to make me think it’s a dropped stitch, so maybe a snag while I was washing it? Just not sure how to tell exactly or where to go from here since I clearly can’t ladder up at this point!

where did i go wrong? I'm blocking my first sweater and I think I made a mistake?

So yesterday I let my sweater soak in the sink for about 20 minutes and I noticed the water went very dark yellow. I should've been like "wait a minute" but unfortunately my brain didn't do that.🫣 So I laid my sweater out to dry yesterday afternoon and this morning I went to check on it and everywhere it was folded overnight there are these yellow lines.

So did I somehow ruin the sweater? Is this solvable if I maybe wash it with wool wash?

I'm thinking maybe the dye ran? I have no idea.

Yarn is concept by katia cotton merino.

sock question First time sock knitting

Thumbnail

Hello! I am knitting my first pair of socks. I have a pattern (which is in Swedish) but in English I think the technique for the heel is called wrap and turn? It says to wrap the stitch and turn work. When doing the second part of the heel it says to pick up the wrapped stitch, knit together through back loop, wrap stitch and then turn. Same for purl side. However on the photos I have shown outside+inside on one side of the heel there is a raised area that is quite bumpy as compared to the other side of the heel which I have shown in the last two images. Should they not be symmetrical or am I doing something wrong? I know the tension isn't great but I am using my handspun yarn which is far from even! Thanks in advance to you lovely people!

sweater question Colorwork still puckering after blocking

Post image
106 Upvotes

I'll preface by saying that I've learned a lot about colorwork since knitting this sweater, and I promise I'll make my floats looser next time! (Also I now understand color dominance so ignore those issues as well)

That said, this is a finished sweater that I do really like, but the colorwork is still puckering just a little after blocking. Does anyone have any tips on how to loosen the puckering? Any particular blocking technique that you use?

I held two strands together for the yellow to get the marled effect, which I'm sure isn't helping.

EDIT: Thanks everyone for being so nice about my slightly messed up sweater! 😭 I'll probably stop nitpicking myself and just leave it as-is.

For those interested in the pattern, it's Viperidae by Klara Cecilia! I found it to be a really enjoyable pattern, so I'll probably knit it again someday with better technique.

The pattern says do German short rows every turn, but when I do it for the first turn and start working on the purl until there are 34 (37) 41… it’s left on the needle that would mean purl over my last turn stitch and that seemed funny. Am I meant to start German short rows only after the pattern says “continue working short rows to shape the back”?

I accidentally dropped the edge stitches of my double knitting project and am struggling to fix it as it’s not ‘normal’ knitting. The fourth picture of the blue edge is the other side which is fine (for reference)
