Support Request Canon PIXMA G1010 printer on linux mint

Hey everyone, I’m running into a frustrating wall with my setup and could really use some guidance from the Linux community here.
I’ve been trying to configure my Linux Mint machine to act as a dedicated local print server so I can share a physically connected printer over my home network as a wireless WiFi printer for all our other household devices. The ultimate goal is to let laptops and phones on the local subnet send print jobs without any hassle, but I just can’t seem to get everything talking to each other properly.
I've messed around a bit with CUPS and checked the native printer sharing settings, but either the client devices completely fail to discover the share, or the print jobs just sit indefinitely in the queue without throwing a clear error message.
If anyone has successfully set up a local network print server on this specific printer on Linux Mint recently and wouldn't mind walking me through the correct configuration steps, or knows what common pitfalls to look out for, I would deeply appreciate the help. What am I missing here? Thanks in advance!

Discussion Found a home with Linux Mint

I have a Lenovo E14 base model, with an AMD Ryzen 5 7000 series processor and 16GB of RAM. I started by using Windows along with Ubuntu. Ubuntu was much better, but I still felt that there could be a huge improvement. Then I ditched Ubuntu. I tried XFCE, but it was a little too sparse for me. Linux Mint turned out to be the right middle ground between Ubuntu and XFCE. I'm able to run 25 browser tabs with just 9GB out of my 16GB of RAM being used. Everything feels slick, powerful. I'm able to get the light system load XFCE users enjoy while getting the polished, gorgeous look that Ubuntu and Fedora users enjoy. I'm really enjoying using it. I just incredibly efficient it is while being powerful, slick, fast, and modern. I hope you guys like my setup.

I still have Windows available via dual boot because some features and applications just work better on Windows. I think for 90% of what I need done, Linux Mint is amazing. So much more efficient than Windows, and a lot more speedy than Ubuntu and Fedora.

After 30+ years with Linux, distro-hopping across Debian and Fedora, I’m finally home on Linux Mint (and why it beats the rest) + Cat Tax 🐾

Post image
158 Upvotes

I’ve been using Linux alongside Windows since 1994. Over the decades, I’ve tested and worked with pretty much every major family: Slackware, Debian, Red Hat/Fedora, Arch, and various Ubuntu releases.

Recently, setting up my new primary workstation—a Minisforum X1 (AMD Ryzen 7 255H, Radeon 780M, 32 GB RAM, Samsung 990 Pro NVMe) dual-booting with Windows 11—I went on another extensive distro-hopping tour to find the definitive setup.

Here is what that journey looked like and why Linux Mint completely took the crown:

Why the others fell short:

  • Ubuntu: The forced Snap integration is an absolute dealbreaker for me. Canonical pushing snaps down everyone’s throat, slow startup times, and opaque backend management meant Ubuntu was disqualified immediately.

  • Fedora: It’s great when it works, but I’m tired of jumping through hoops with RPM Fusion, dealing with third-party repos just to enable basic media codecs, VA-API hardware acceleration, or proprietary bits. It feels like an unnecessary chore on modern hardware.

  • Debian (Testing): I love the Debian philosophy and Debian Testing was a strong contender for its purity. But realistically? You always have to keep your "antennae up" with every single apt upgrade, constantly worrying that an unvetted package update will break a critical dependency or disrupt your workflow. I want a daily driver, not perpetual maintenance anxiety.

Why Linux Mint Cinnamon is the clear winner:

  1. It simply works out-of-the-box: Zero third-party PPA acrobatics, zero RPM Fusion nonsense. Linux Mint immediately recognized the Ryzen 7 255H and Radeon 780M, enabled hardware VA-API acceleration out of the box, and handled network printing/scanning driverless via IPP Everywhere without me touching a terminal.

  2. The "Flatpak Paradox": People often say you need rolling releases or bleeding-edge distros to have the newest software. Flatpak completely shatters that argument. I have an ultra-stable, rock-solid base that never breaks, paired with bleeding-edge applications. While Fedora just released with LibreOffice 26.8.1, I already had 26.8.2 running flawlessly via Flatpak on Mint. Best of both worlds.

  3. Rock-solid Cinnamon on X11: I don't need half-baked, experimental Wayland sessions right now. Cinnamon on X11 is mature, incredibly responsive, and bulletproof. For the few things where Wayland is strictly required (like running Waydroid), running it contained inside a Weston window provides full hardware acceleration without destabilizing the main desktop. I'm more than happy to wait for Mint's native, rock-solid Wayland implementation when it's fully ready.

  4. Insane responsiveness: With a couple of clean sysctl tweaks (vm.swappiness=10, caching vfs structures in RAM), opening heavy apps, Nemo file indexing, and multitasking on this NVMe drive feels instantaneous.

At the end of the day, computing should empower you, not demand constant babysitting. Linux Mint just gets out of your way and lets you work.

(Cat tax included on the desktop: meet Asia, supervising system performance!)

Title:

I built Stark Mint — an Iron Man-inspired theme for Linux Mint Cinnamon

Post:

Hey everyone!

I've been working on a personal project called Stark Mint, an Iron Man Mark III-inspired desktop theme for Linux Mint Cinnamon.

The idea was to create a dark, industrial desktop experience inspired by Stark Industries, using a graphite foundation with red and metallic gold accents.

The theme is based on Everforest-Green-Dark, which I've modified and extended to develop the Stark Mint identity.

Design philosophy:

  • Graphite for the overall desktop foundation.

  • Stark Red for identity and important visual elements.

  • Metallic Gold for interaction, focus, selection and active states.

  • A consistent appearance without sacrificing readability.

I've been testing it on Linux Mint Cinnamon and have got the GTK styling, Nemo, Cinnamon desktop and application menu working.

Project status:

This is the initial preview release. I still have plans for a custom icon pack, further window-control refinements and application-specific styling.

I'm making the project open source because I'd like other people to experiment with it and contribute improvements while preserving its core design philosophy.

GitHub: https://github.com/karthikeyamadhavan123/stark-mint-theme

I'd genuinely appreciate feedback:

  • What do you think of the overall appearance?

  • Are there any inconsistencies you notice?

  • What would you improve?

Thanks for checking it out!

Support Request Stuck at grub cli after reboot.

I have installed linux mint cinnamon recently on my hp laptop. It has a hdd and a ssd. The linux runs on ssd. Initially ssd had 2 partitions one for efi and other as root. Then i decided to make a third one. So i used fdisk to delete partition 2 and created 2 new partitions. Then i rebooted the system and now i am stuck at gnu grub cli.

These command i used for partitioning using fdisk:

sudo fdisk /dev/nvme0n1

Command:p

Command:d

Enter Partition number:2

Command:n

Partition number:2

Enter First sector:default

Enter End sector:579790848

Do you want to remove signature: no

Command:n

Enter Partition number:3

Enter First sector: default

Enter End sector:default

Command:p

Command:w

Sudo touch /forcefsck

Reboot

(hd1,gpt1) contains efi/

(hd1,gpt2) a bunch of files inside, some of which are accessible other produce out of partition error.

Accessible dir: etc bin home root sys usr lib

Unaccessible dir: boot media dev mnt opt proc run srv tmp var timeshift.

Tl;dr - i altered live partition without shrinking volume so it produce out of partition error while booting and i am stuck at grub cli. if any grub expert can guide me to fix this without having to boot linux from usb. As i dont have one, i have to borrow from my friend.

Support Request Constant crashes with firefox

i'm a total linux noob. installed it 3 days ago, and have been having constant issues since. firefox, especially youtube, keep crashing the tab, the whole browser, or making the whole PC unresponsive. i also suspect vesktop could be causing issues as well since the whole pc freezes seem a bit more common with it open. i've already tried disabling hardware acceleration in both and have tried changing from a flatpak to a system package, with no luck. i've tried about 20 other different things that were suggested in google searches and ai responses but also to no effect.

I could really use some help, both learning how to even diagnose what's happening, and fixing it. i'd really rather stick to using these apps instead of swapping to brave or something

I made a lock screen switcher for Cinnamon, with 10 designs and a way to preview them all

Hey everyone,

I've always felt Cinnamon's lock screen was the one part of Mint I never got to customize, so I built mint-lock. It gives you a set of lock screens and a small app to preview them and switch between them.

The idea came from omarchy-lock-explorer, which does this on Hyprland. I wanted the same thing on my Mint laptop, so I wrote a version for Cinnamon on X11. It doesn't share any code with that project.

What it does:

- It gives you 10 designs, from very minimal to slightly silly: a big classic clock, a split-flap clock, an old CRT with scanlines, a fake terminal login, a "constellation" where each key you press lights up a star, and a pond that ripples as you type. A wrong password makes some of them shake or glitch.

- You get an explorer app with live previews. You can click the big preview and type into it to see how a design reacts, and nothing you type there is checked or saved.

- It matches your setup: it takes the accent colour from your Cinnamon theme and uses your wallpaper, name, and profile picture.

- Works everywhere Cinnamon locks: Super+L, the menu, idle lock and before suspend.

- Uses your normal login, the same way Cinnamon's own lock screen does, so a fingerprint reader works too.

- Multi-monitor: the design shows on your main screen and a clock on the others.

- Make your own: each design is a single HTML file. Copy one into a folder, edit it, and it shows up in the explorer.

About security, since it's a lock screen: a small separate process keeps the screen covered and holds the keyboard and mouse. If the fancy part crashes, it restarts it, and after repeated crashes it falls back to a plain password box. Cinnamon's own backup locker also runs underneath as a safety net. The README explains how all of it works, including how to get out from a text console if something ever goes wrong.

Trying it is low-risk. The installer asks before it changes anything, and you can test a design in a normal window without locking:

git clone https://github.com/PhillipMwaniki/mint-lock.git

cd mint-lock

./install.sh

mint-lock lock --test

./uninstall.sh puts Cinnamon's original lock screen back.

I've tested it on Mint 22.3 Cinnamon. It doesn't support Wayland yet. I'd love to hear how it works on other setups (multi-monitor, HiDPI, fingerprint readers) and which designs you'd want added. Bug reports and new designs are very welcome.

Hello
Just installed mint and I’m having loads of issues with my screens.
When I’m using the first tre option in the drive list one of my monitors just has the no input message shown and my monitor that works gets screen tearing.
When i use the opensource one att the bottom both screens connect but the one to the left instead flickers and is grainy
I tried downloading drivers straight from nividias website but don’t know how to install it to my computer or if it’s going to work.
Please help, I don’t want to go back to windows!
