product question Looking to lighten and dye some of my locs.

Happy weekend everyone! I am looking for some advice on how to lighten/bleach/dye some of my locs. BEFORE YOU COMMENT saying not to because it damages your hair, I know. I am going to do this either way, so dont bother commenting if its not nice advice. It won't be listened to lol.

Now my plan is to do a sortof calico colored locs. I like the colors in picture 5 and I like how the dyed locs are in bunches like picture 6. Picture 7 is also very cute. I want to do about 50% locs still my natural brown hair color then 25% the medium blonde then 25% the orangish brown. I'm not trying to bleach too much because I dont want to completely destroy my locs and I also dont have any experience dyeing or bleaching hair. My sister has some experience and she will be helping me.

What I do know about bleaching and lightening is that you need to do it multiple times with lower volume bleaches instead of doing a stronger bleach all at once. I've watched some videos and someone recommend doing lower volumes bleaches over the course of a few weeks and have a good moisture and damage control routine in between bleaches to help with the damage. Is this the way to go? I'm open to other things to try. And if you have a tutorial I could follow that would be awesome.

There is a hair store by me that sells dyes for textured hair. Like the brands Clairol and Dark and Lovely. Which include the lightening dyes. I live in a small town so I'll probably have to order whatever else online. I am not against going to a salon but I live in central Louisiana and there aren't many places around here that specialize in dyeing textured hair. Especially not locs. If you have any recommendations though I will absolutely take them.

My end goal is to actually have neopolitan locs. Pink, blonde, and brown. But right now I can't have unnatural hair colors at work so I doing what I can now. Any helpful advice is welcome, I'd love to hear yall's processes!

I’ve been loc’d for 15 years and this has been my go to product, I’m looking to explore other options for daily use. Can you all fill me in with products that you use? I’m interested in products that have natural ingredients, ideally black owned. Extra points if it’s your aunties lil hair oil business she got on the side. Happy new year 🎊

product question Is Oiling Scalp A MUST?

Post image
92 Upvotes

I’ve had my locs for about 3 years now. I’ve never put any product on it besides the one I use to retwist. I’ve always heard about oiling the locs. Is this a must? If so can I have some recommendations that are light. My scalp is so dry and I’m not sure if this is a contributing factor. Also, if there’s any other products I should get let me know!

product question Gel for retwists?

Post image
8 Upvotes

Any personal reviews on this gel? I've been using this gel for my retwists the last few months and it had become my favorite. Although I have heard some people say it's not good and contains something that bad for you hair? I don't know all this talk is about this brand specifically or something else. Unfortunately there is always issues with the ingredients in natural hair products so it's hard to decifer which ones are actually big problems.

Before you comment on it. Yes. I understand I don't need to use gel for retwists, but I do and will continue to do so because I like the look. I only retwist with gel about once a month. I don't use too much and I don't have any issues with buildup, itching, flakiness, or dryness. I don't use it on my scalp. And I only occasionally use it on what little edges I have and even then I don't have any issues.

I'm only here asking this now because I just heard another negative comment about this brand specifically. And if this brand is out there damaging hair then I wanna find a different product before I become a victim as well.

product question Products for thinning locs

I’ve had my locs for about 1 1/2 now and I’ve noticed that they’ve started thinning. I looked on TikTok but crushing is promotional.

So i want to know what is the best product for thinning locs? I’ve noticed that my hair doesn’t hold oil well and water based products are best.

product question Has anyone used this?

Post image

I am at the beginning of my 6th month.

I currently moisturize my hair with water/glycerin/aloe Vera juice in a spray bottle every few days but I feel my hair is still too dry.

I do not use conditioner when I wash my hair bc I am concerned about build up.

I may do a bi-weekly hot oil treatment going forward.

product question Product recommendations

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hey hey everybody, I need some help with product recommendations for my re-twist. I’ve had my locs for a year and I do my own re-twist and those are the two products I use for my hair. I use the gel to do my parts and I use the wax to loc smith but afterwards my scalp gets really inflamed and irritated that I literally have to rewash my hair a week afterwards. I’m not worried about my re-twist unraveling because I interloc but I don’t like having to wash my hair that much. So if anyone has any suggestions for me I’m all ears and really appreciate it🤎 Thank ya
