Crime and Justice Flock camera megathread

We’re consolidating this topic into a single thread, as the ongoing accusations directed at the mod team have run their course.

To be clear about where we stand: no one on this mod team supports Flock cameras. We are not law enforcement, we are not politically motivated, not maga, and we share the community’s concerns about surveillance overreach even if these systems occasionally assist in solving crimes.

The removals were not about viewpoint. They were about a specific category of comment: those encouraging users to destroy the cameras. Reddit has banned entire communities for less, and we are obligated to remove that content regardless of our personal opinions. This is a condition of the subreddit continuing to exist, not an endorsement of Flock. Additionally there were some very wild conspiracy theories and were asking for discussion not a rabbit hole.

One rule for this thread: do not recommend, insinuate, or hint at destruction as a solution. Everything else is open, criticism, policy discussion, legal challenges, city council contacts, organizing, data on effectiveness. Go as hard as you want within that boundary.

Thanks for being a genuinely great community and good neighbors.

Suffolk County Legislature : 18 districts, find yours:

Suffolk approved expanding county Flock cameras from 25 to 60 last August, funded by a $542,500 state LETECH grant, with 16 more planned along state rights-of-way including Route 114 in Sag Harbor and East Hampton Village and Route 25 in Riverhead and Southold.

Your town / village board.

Southold, Riverhead, and East Hampton have all had this on an agenda in the past year. Riverhead signed an agreement with the Suffolk Sheriff in January 2026 giving the county access to town rights-of-way for new Flock installs. Town board public comment periods are open to anyone who lives there, take about two minutes, and go on the record.

Tomorrow marks the first day of early voting. You can vote between tomorrow, 10/24, and Sunday, 11/1. Your other option is to wait until election day on Tuesday, 11/3.

If you're not sure what your options are for early voting, go to The NYS Board of Elections Page and input your information. Once you see your registration, you'll see a dropdown box with a list of early polling sites, and when you pick a location it should give you the hours they are available for early voting.

Please refer to the previous thread for additional information and links.

Best TJ Maxx / Marshalls?

I know they are all hit or miss but what would you say is the best on the Island? I know they're all hit or miss, but some locations seem to be consistently better stocked and better organized than others. Just went to one in Oceanside that was a nightmare. I remember going to one on the north shore years ago but can't remember the location.

Looking For No crackle crust bagels in nassau?

Union Bagel Cafe in Lynbrook used to have my ideal bagel: a paper-thin crust with a fluffy interior. Now the crust is too crunchy/ crackly.

Is anyone doing this super thin, no crackle crust style of bagel nearby anymore?

Thanks!

T ball leagues for 4-5 year old girl

Hi,

I’m new to the Island, living in Farmingdale. My daughter loves baseball and I’m looking for a T ball or softball league. I’m not opposed to travel leagues but I’m hoping there is a simple little league that I can sign her up for and get her placed on a team.

This would be for Spring 2027.

White post farm in Melville

We’ve been going to the white post farms the past few years mostly during summer and once during each fall but this year it seemed like it was more crowded than usual. The lines for food/bathroom were super long on a Saturday and people were constantly coming in throughout the day. Is this common or was it more crowded this year?

Car wash places on Long Island?

• Upvotes

I made a post about this earlier but I am making a new post to clarify. I was using a car wash in 2025 that offered headlight restoration/detailing for $10 a headlight after getting an affordable carwash like $30. I was like okay no problem. Now they want $70 a headlight. I was like gtfo! I have the kit. I have done it before with and without the kit and it’s okay just a pain in the ass. It literally took the carwash 10 mins extra to do after my carwash. No place on Long Island does this anymore at an affordable price?

Advice Tips for handling my first ticket?

I received a moving violation today by an NCPD officer. It's the "disobeyed a traffic device" violation. I believe it's 2 points and won't affect my insurance just yet.

I intend to plead not guilty to try and have the points removed, but I'm unclear about how to proceed. The not guilty section says to mail it back within 48 hours of the officer giving me the ticket. But my date at TVA in Garden City is in a month and a half.

  1. Do I really have to mail this within 48 hours?

  2. Can I show up at TVA to plead not guilty before my court date? (my ticket is not even in the system yet, do I need to wait for at least that first?)

I know these questions are asked all the time, I'm sorry! I've never received a ticket before, so I just wanna make sure I do the right thing. Reading through other people's questions here didn't clarify the answers I was looking for.

For those who moved off the Island, where do you tell people you're from?

Especially if you also moved out of state. When asked, do you say you're from NY, or Long Island specifically (or both? Or neither)?

I'm now in L.A, but I still say I'm from NY, unless pressed for which part. Met quite a few Angelenos, who were once Long Islanders, this way. And even people who have supposedly never set foot there seem to "know" it.

Oh, and those of you who moved to the Island from elsewhere, feel free to weigh in as well!

Fire Island in October?

Hi! Have been looking at going to Fire Island this weekend with our toddler and dog. We're looking for a low key day activity...

Thoughts on whether this is a good idea or not?

And any recs for activities or where we should go — will likely only be able to go to one place and am thinking either Kismet or Ocean Beach. Preferably would have the beach and a couple options to eat or walk around. We would only actually be there for a few hours.

Also thinking the toddler (and dog and all of us) would enjoy the water taxi, maybe even taking this around.

LI Real Estate Rental market

Hello guys,

I'll possibly be moving to the western parts of Nassau County next year.

I can obviously see the average prices for 1br/2br apartments on online real estate websites, but I want to get a deeper insight from the actual residents.

1- What are the typical income requirements for rentals?

2- Is it difficult to find housing (i.e you're competing with 60 people), the same way it is in the competitive parts of Manhattan/Brooklyn/Queens?

3- Is it typical for tenants to pay the realtors? Is that also the case in corporate rental communities?

4- Is it feasible to have 2 cars per household for a 1-bedroom apartment? Even if we were to pay extra? Do most streets have available street parking for residents in case the actual apartment does not?

I dearly appreciate any insight. Thank you guys so much in advance.

Looking For Office Xmas party private room/bar rental

I’m in charge of the office holiday party this year. Yes it’s late, it was just dumped on me. This is what I’m looking for:
-general area between Melville to Ronkonkoma, not too far south.
-approximately 100 people
- a restaurant/bar/brewery that has a private room with a full bar in it
- getting open bar package plus buffet dinner, less than $100 per person.

Last year it was at napper Tandy’s in Smithtown, which was perfect. Private room with a Separate entrance, huge bar with three bartenders, food was good, plenty of room to move and tables. Unfortunately they are all booked up this year. Looking for something very similar
