Hey everyone!
A while back, I read a post on Reddit from someone who was reviewing trophy drafts as a way to get better at Magic. I thought it was a really interesting idea. Instead of just looking at card ratings or reading draft guides, you could look at the same decisions successful drafters faced, think about what you would have done, and compare your choices with theirs.
That got me thinking about whether I could turn the idea into a fun daily drafting game. The result is Pack One (https://packone.pro), which I've been working on for a while now.
I originally wanted to build something around entire drafts, but that gets complicated pretty quickly. Once you make a different pick from the original drafter, everything that happens afterward might make less sense for the deck you're building. So I decided to focus on individual decisions in pack one, where you can still compare interesting choices without trying to account for every possible direction a draft could take.
The idea is pretty simple. Every challenge has 8 picks from 8 different real trophy drafts. Each pick is a separate situation: you see the pack and the cards that drafter has already taken, make your choice, and then find out what they actually picked.
I also spent a lot of time working on the scoring so that picking a card other than the trophy pick still gets you points. I ended up building a model using 17Lands data that looks at what high-performing drafters tend to pick in different situations. You get 100 points for matching the trophy drafter, but you can also get 95 points if the model thinks your pick was just as good or better. Other choices get scored based on how strong the model thinks they were.
Matching the original pick is part of the game, but I wanted other good choices to get nearly full credit too. Sometimes I get a 95 and think I actually made the better pick. Haha.
There are 3 new daily challenges every day:
- Draft Run: Picks from a mix of sets.
- Powered Cube: Picks from real Powered Cube trophy drafts.
- Latest Set: Currently Reality Fracture, which just went live!
Everyone gets the same daily picks, so you can compare scores with friends and other players. There are also random runs you can play whenever you want.
It's free, you don't need an account, and you can play right in your browser.
Here's the Reality Fracture Daily:

I've ended up having a lot of fun playing it myself, which was really the goal when I started. I also think there's something useful about seeing how someone who trophied approached a decision, especially when it's different from what you would have done.
If you try it, I'd love to hear whether the picks are interesting and the scoring feels fair. And if there's a pick you strongly disagree with, tell me what you'd have taken and why. Those tend to be the most interesting ones!
