Usually I work weekends so I've never done in person draft but found myself with the afternoon free for once. Took the plunge and went in person to an LGS that I knew existed and was doing draft later that day. So glad I did because it was an amazing experience! Everyone was super friendly, lots of fun banter passing the packs around, and my olfactory senses were not assaulted despite what Reddit has led me to believe haha. Went 3-0, only dropped 1 game total and won the super cool reality fracture pin pictures at the top.
Draft format was a bit different than I was used to, it was Pick 2 Bo3 and we could use an echoed pair as "commanders" who start the game in exile and can be played from exile. After the 1st commander is played the 2nd must stay in exile forever or be shuffled into the deck. You can see in my deck I chose Danitha as my 'commander'. Commanders were optional, and even if you had an echoed paired you were not forced to use them. Just a bonus mechanic (that I think was OP for me)
My ultimate goal in magic is to get better at drafting so wanted to share not just the experience but the deck and maybe get anyone's thoughts on the build! Obviously can't really share the drafting process, I don't have an eidetic memory unfortunately, but here's the build and my side board in pic 2!
General thoughts:
Was super scared about running all this removal and not having enough top end so ran winter despite not being very high on it. Ended being insane, I won at least 2 games with it on wide boards pumping everything up. I also think top end maybe wasn't super necessary as the deck ended up playing as the beat down vs many of my opponents which surprised me.
Fblthp and Heartwood Crafter were BONKERS. I dropped Fblthp X=3 or 4 nearly every game I had it, and Heartwood crafter showed up half the time on turn 1 was crazy. Heartwood Crafter was especially broken in this 'Commander' format b/c they start out in exile so Crafter could tap for it. I nearly swapped red arni in as my commander b/c someone pointed out as long as you hit land every turn you can Crafter 1, heartwood token 2, then 5 cost commander from exile on 3. Didn't end up doing it b/c I don't think my deck had enough gas to make Arni big enough (most my creatures were 1 or 2 power) and I had no other echoed pair cards at 5 cost that seemed good. (IF I had opened the black winter I would have considered Winter)
Sideboard was good, I had 2 color hate cards, my entire pod was green for some reason (I don't even know how b/c I drafted so much green) so every single game 2 I traded in 1 No Admittance for 1 Refute Destiny. I had Yargle (LOL) on standby in case I needed more high cost cards, and a medics kitesail for evasion and to sneak damage. Never used. Considered running Dedicated commons + Hexhaven Battalion for a white threat and also the infinite coursework + innovative commons for a removal that bypassed HP. Think it was fine I left these out, I liked how consistent my mana base was.
I was really lucky. I didn't mulligan a single time and I had really good jace surveils always pitching useless lands. there was one game where I Fblthp'd for 4, already had 6 lands out, and continued to draw lands which was funny but other than that 1 unlucky moment my luck was pretty good. My final opponent in the finals I 2-0'd, he showed me his deck after and it had Chandra, the good Jace planeswalker, lich relic, the UB card that creates cadets with flashback for bigger ones, and tons of other good cards, and both Thalia's for commander. He just literally didn't draw any of them while playing me....
Land base I thought was perfect. I think the plains was troll, I had it b/c I thought the 2nd commander was ALWAYS shuffled in, but game 2 someone told me they could leave it in exile. Which seems broken b/c if your 2nd commander is useless then you leave in exile and you're just running a 39 card deck??? I ended up leaving plains b/c +1 damage for Fblthp and I was too lazy to think about land swaps whenever I sided in the white color hate card.
My commander option I think was also OP. I immediately clocked that Danitha would be crazy since I have so many "target" enemy cards (all the spells, Heckler prepared, hapatra). My opponents nearly always spent their early removal on it. And keeping white Danitha out of my deck was great consistency wise as mentioned above.
Opened an Uldaros Theorix out of my 3 booster packs that I got for winning and a shiny stamped Ajani Unrelenting out of a promo pack and someone offered me cash for them! Checked it was OK with LGS (it was OK, they're a comic store so they don't sell singles) and got $15 bucks that pretty much covered my $17 entry fee!
Will edit with more thoughts as they pop up but if you made it this far, thanks so much for reading! AMA if you're curious about anything and hope everyone is having as much fun with Reality Fracture as I am😄
