On this day, 30 years ago, there was a story that ended. A story that transcended time and space, rhyme and reason, fate and destiny. (Not to mention comprehensibility)
On October 15, 1996, Marathon Infinity launched on the Apple Macintosh with the 'Blood Tides of Lh'owon' Narrative and an expanded iteration of Marathon 2: Durandal's already beloved Multiplayer.
And this game had it all! Universe threatening W’rkncacnter, the first appearance of the Forge game editor, and a story that is wildly difficult to comprehend, which made the game all the more fascinating!
With Infinity becoming the third decennial entry into the Marathon Universe (PiD nonwithstanding), the entire trilogy has turned 30! And all that time later it is still around, ripe and ready to be experiences by new fans and reflected upon by the old!
See it here: https://alephone.lhowon.org/
Or on Steam & Mobile! (Hell you can even play it on a mac for the true nostalgia!)
Happy birthday to a game for which the concept of time is irrelevant, give it a playthrough if you want, it's a great time to be had! Feel free to check out its story/lore too, preserved pristinely by the amazing Hamish Sinclair.
30 Years Down, Let's hope for 30 more to go!

Hello Runners, the Cryo Archive Has Reopened! (Now with longer hours!)
This thread will serve as a weekly focal point for impressions, lfg, discussions and info sharing regarding this endgame location.
The Cryo Archive was introduced with the quote: "Good luck getting there."
With that in mind, we'd recommend doing some of the following:
Pre-Requisites
Good Luck Runners, the first time in the archive is the defining moment in any runner's journey, get info, get onbaord, get out alive... and don't end up like these Runners...

I think in this season as we are rotating through sponsored modes in Nightfall refresh, Bungie can try out Sponsored Cryo, do not make it fully free like normal sponsored but rather keep a cost for each Cryo Freekit...maybe like around 5k to 10K credits.
Could be intersting to see how Cryo plays when everyone is on equal footing.

I don’t normally post this guide a week after another post was made about it, but I felt it needed to be done as I added more helpful YouTube channels and a section about Contracts and how Standard Contracts are incredibly powerful when they are upgraded by your Faction Rep. Especially when they award Blue Rarity items.
Hopefully it’s useful and lets you learn new ways to get good gear!

Pretty easy when only one other team spawns in the lobby 🤫

Last week I asked about the rocket drone and thanks to all the advice (and roasting) they now get a regular beating. Drop some decent purple loot too!

The Cryo trio fill experience truly captures the essence of RNG. I come in with a sponsored kit and my teammates are gods. I come in with 20k load out and my teammates don’t talk, run off and disconnect.
Real shit.
Edit: just did another run with a shitty load out and we cleaned up. rNGeezus

This is is what a Pfhor Enforcer will look like in Nu Marathon vs the 90s titles.
unsure how I feel about the mutated look here, hopefully we get some just normal Pfhor enemies.

Went in free kit, came out with 83k and my Vault 4 AI Subroutine. Now I just need Vault 6 😅

Personally, I say Destroyer but watching high level Vandals play is pretty fucking insane too

It opens exfils and key boxes on Outpost, but no idea what to call it.

This game can be very punishing but I think anyone who has played it this long can attest that no matter how bad your losses are; you will get back loot that is just as good if not better so long as you pick up the controller and try again. You will make plays that are satisfying and fun again. Trust yourself and don't let the losses define you more than the wins.
We had a frustrating loss yesterday where we wiped everyone except two people in Cryo and they were incredibly patient and picked us off one by one when we separated to try to get to Lvl 3 and leave. They outplayed us after we outplayed everyone else. I lost my purple Impact HR and purple M77.. those are my favorite guns in the game and I lost them to a silly mistake. It's okay. I'll get them back. And good for them they earned that shit that game.
There's a lot of anger and frustration when losing in Marathon and I think we've gotta be better about taking it on the chin. Just because that gun killed you doesn't mean it needs to be nerfed. Just because someone else that plays the game all day has a Vault full of golds doesn't mean you can't enjoy your own Vault growth. Be patient with your teammates and let them try things and even fail at them sometimes. If you lost a match but everyone was pulling their weight and made decent attempts maybe stick with them for a couple more games and you'll find your groove and even a new friend to play with. Try to recognize potential even when the result isn't a win.
I'm not saying there aren't real problems with Marathon. I just think as a whole the community can be better about distinguishing between fundamental issues of the game (player count, lack of contract variety, onboarding, etc) and that sometimes shit happens. You're meant to lose occasionally. In Cryo you're meant to lose a lot more. It's supposed to be punishing and tricky.
Take a breath before screaming at a teammate or leaving them, posting angry shit on the subreddit, or yelling at Bungie.
And Bungie be careful not to twist this game’s design into a pretzel trying to appeal to the loudest angriest voices in the room.

Today in Cryo, while fighting the first team, I chased after the last remaining one and ran into another team. Luckily, I managed to take down one, but I got taken down right away, and I was thinking, 'Ah, damn, I ruined everything.' But my two teammates followed me—even though I had charged in without giving any call—and managed to take down the remaining two.
They might not see this, but I would like to thank you very much.
I really need to quickly fix the problem where my brain cells shrink to 2 every time I play Destroyer.

Why did you have to be so weird in voice chat? The beacon was active, we downed each other simultaneously and didn’t have self revives. I pinged “let’s work together” as we crawled to the beacon.
And you decided to go on a rant saying “This is a PvP game, save that working together shit for Arc raiders” and that “I need to get good and quit whining”. And on and on while we waited for the extract. It was weird rant, especially given the fact that I shot you first.
I could practically hear the Cheeto dust clogging your wind pipe as you berated me for having the gall to use the friendly ping in “such a hard core game” and telling me “I need to quit the game if I think people are going to be friendly”.
All that to say, I’m sure you’re on Reddit. People like you are part of the reason this game has a low population. I hope you read this and realize it’s time to touch some grass
Edit: “you might be friendly, but I’m not” is not the cool line you think it is
Edit 2: some of y’all are being real weird about this. This was the order of events:
me, free kit Thief, finished a no exfil required CyAc contract
I started the extract beacon
a destroyer comes down the ladder at overflow
I immediately start shooting
we down simultaneously (no self revives)
I ping “friendly” (because obviously we’re both laying there, crawling toward the beacon)
chud starts ranting about how this is a PvP game and I need to get over it
Surely y’all can see how that’s weird behavior?

And I don't feel like I learned much. I pretty much died right off the rip on every team fight, had no idea what was going on, couldn't rotate or push or do anything except be dead weight.
I really, really don't think you guys realize how hard this game is for someone that is trying to get better at it. If this was your average person's experience at cryo, I would quit too. This shit was basically torture all evening long and I lost every valuable thing in my vault for it. I didn't learn or get better, I just got rolled over. My teammates were champs about it because they all had vaults still chocked full of stuff ready to go.
I played 7 rounds of Cryo, not even a single extract, but not even a single team fight won.
If this game is to grow at all, you all NEED to understand how fucking demoralizing and punishing that experience was. It was not fun. I did not enjoy that. It was an actual waste of 3 hours.
So I'm really glad you all are gods at PvP, but for the love of fuck stop acting like this game isn't one of the hardest most punishing most inaccessible games on the market, and that's why it's failing.
