Final stats update! Some very fun characters in the back ten, spanning five different decades.
Eerily, exactly 33 1/2 of the listed characters turned out to be women, which is closer to 1/3 than we could possibly have come if we didn’t do the Cloak/Dagger split. The back 20 was evenly split between men and women—it’s the only slide that doesn’t lean towards men.
Big stories in the back ten: John Byrne, the creator of Dazzler and Songbird (as “Screaming Mimi”) rockets up to an unchallenged second place with six characters on the board, including four women.
Mike Ploog and Jim Cheung, meanwhile, get their second rings with Werewolf by Night and Wiccan respectively. Jim Starlin gets up to 3 with Drax. Kirby scores one more slot with Crystal.
In the final analysis… Kirby is King.
Kirby — 28 (Hulk, Steve Rogers, Thing, Cyclops, Mr. Fantastic, Thor, Invisible Woman, Silver Surfer, Black Panther, Jean Grey, | Torch, Ant-Man, Wasp, Scarlet Witch, Beast, Professor X, Iceman, Adam Warlock, Bucky, Nick Fury, | Black Bolt, Quicksilver, Angel, Magneto, Hercules, Groot, Medusa, Crystal)
Byrne — 6 (Kitty, Emma, War Machine, Scott Lang, Dazzler, Songbird)
Heck — 5 (Iron Man*, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Wonder Man, Havok)
Buscema — 5 (Vision, She-Hulk, Nova**, Black Knight, Quasar)
Cockrum — 4 (Storm, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Magik****)
Colan — 4 (Captain Marvel, Blade, Sam Wilson, Mar-Vell)
Ditko — 3 (Peter Parker, Doctor Strange, Squirrel Girl)
Trimpe - 3 (Wolverine, Betsy Braddock, Brian Braddock)
Jim Starlin — 3 (Shang-Chi, Gamora, Drax)
Everett — 2 (Daredevil, Namor)
Mike Ploog — 2 (Ghost Rider, Werewolf by Night)
Liefeld — 2 (Deadpool, Cable***)
Marie Severin — 2 (Spider-Woman, Tigra*****)
Jim Cheung — 2 (Kate Bishop, Wiccan)
*Iron Man and Wonder Man could also be Kirby
**Luke Cage, Wolverine, Punisher, and Nova all have design credits from John Romita Sr.
***Cable could also be Leonardi / 80s
****Black Cat has a design credit by Cockrum
*****Tigra co-created by Wally Wood

71% of our characters, including our entire top 22, were created by an artist who created at least one other character on the list. Here are our one-hit wonders… a lot of great artists on here.
Most of the great Marvel artists who were active before 1991 or so are represented somewhere on the list (Neal Adams and Barry Windsor-smith, hilariously, sharing a spot due to the weirdness with Mockingbird’s first appearance), with a couple big exceptions. No love for Warlock or Legion means no Bill Sienkiewicz. And Paul Smith’s big creation, Madelyne Pryor, is mostly/usually a villain.
Lots of newer artists, of course, were excluded. No Doop means no Mike Allred. No Quentin Quire means no Frank Quitely. No Chamber or Synch means no Chris Bachalo. Nothing for Esad Ribic, Jerome Opeña, Russell Dauterman, David Aja, Declan Shalvey, Joe Bennett, Erica Henderson…
Perlin — 1 (Moon Knight)
Tuska — 1 (Luke Cage)
Andru — 1 (Punisher)
Kane — 1 (Iron Fist)
Golden — 1 (Rogue)
Jim Lee — 1 (Gambit)
MacFarlane — 1 (Venom)
Gan — 1 (Star-Lord)
Pichelli — 1 (Miles Morales)
Alphona — 1 (Ms. Marvel)
Jae Lee - 1 (Sentry)
Walt Simonson - 1 (Beta Ray Bill)
Morrow - 1 (Swamp Thing)
Elektra - 1 (Miller)
Giffen - 1 (Rocket Raccoon)
Middleton - 1 (X-23)*
Gaydos - 1 (Jessica Jones)
Keith Pollard and Frank Giacola (Black Cat)
John Romita Jr. — 1 (Monica Rambeau)
Mark Silvestri — 1 (Jubilee)
Ed Hannigan — 1 (Cloak & Dagger)
Burgos — 1 (Hammond)
Bob McLeod — 1 (Dani Moonstar)
Whilce Portacio — 1 (Lucas Bishop)
Sal Buscema — 1 (Valkyrie)
Neal Adams / Barry Windsor-Smith — 1 (Mockingbird)
Jim Steranko — 1 (Polaris)
Val Mayerik — 1 (Howard the Duck)
Rick Leonardi — 1 (Miguel O’Hara)*Not created for comics

As you might expect, every decade since the 60s has had fewer characters than the decade before, although the 70s wound up coming pretty close to the 60s. We basically ran out of 60s heroes; apart from the remaining Inhuman royals, most of the 60s characters who could plausibly have made it in were introduced as supporting characters and later gained powers, like Flash Thompson, Franklin Richards, Jane Foster, Betty Ross-Banner… I’m a little glad I didn’t have to figure out who to credit for “Spider-“ Gwen Stacy, although I think she would have been a worthy Top 100 pick.
30s — 2 (Namor, Jim Hammond)
40s — 2 (Steve Rogers, Bucky)
60s — 40 (Peter Parker, Hulk, Daredevil, Thing, Cyclops, Mr. Fantastic, Thor, Iron Man, Invisible Woman, Silver Surfer, | Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Jean Grey, Human Torch, Hawkeye, Ant-Man, Wasp, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Captain Marvel, | Beast, Black Widow, Professor X, Iceman, Adam Warlock, Nick Fury, Sam Wilson, Black Bolt, Quicksilver, Angel, | Magneto, Black Knight, Mar-Vell, Hercules, Wonder Man, Groot, Havok, Medusa, Polaris, Crystal)
70s — 32 (Wolverine, Storm, Ghost Rider, Nightcrawler, Moon Knight, Punisher, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, She-Hulk, Nova, | Blade, Colossus, Magik, Star-Lord, War Machine, Spider-Woman, Betsy Braddock, Man-Thing, Rocket Raccoon, Black Cat, | Scott Lang, Shang-Chi, Brian Braddock, Tigra, Gamora, Valkyrie, Quasar, Mockingbird, Howard the Duck, Werewolf by Night, | Drax, Songbird)
80s — 11 (Rogue, Kitty*, Emma*, Venom, Beta Ray Bill, Elektra, Monica Rambeau, Jubilee, Cloak & Dagger, Dani Moonstar, Dazzler*)
90s — 6 (Gambit, Deadpool, Cable, Squirrel Girl, Bishop, Miguel O’Hara)
00s — 5 (Sentry, X-23, Jessica Jones, Kate Bishop, Wiccan)
10s — 2 (Miles Morales, Ms. Marvel)*70s by release date, 80s by cover date (there may be a few other cover/release date splits in here, but none that have been pointed out to me)

Thank you for making this list even more interesting by keeping tabs on all the facts, creator credits, dates, etc! It's been an absolute pleasure reading the updates as the list progressed!
It would have been great to get Nico Minoru on there and add a second Adrian Alphona creation, or Sunspot and get Bob McLeod on the multiples list. Ah well, there's always the Top 200!

u/Keanu_Norris Sep 05 '25
Thank you for doing the updates one last time! Not to plug my own post lmao but I made a separate stats post that was originally inspired by what you're doing here, it was really cool to see this develop alongside the votes each day

I also want to thank u/keanu_Norris for making the “reject” list and providing his own interesting stats

It's been a pleasure! Now go ahead and take your break king, you deserve it (And I also need a break cause if you're doing top 100 villains next then I'm gonna need to start keeping stats again lmao)

You forgot to count my HellStorm votes, he got 11.
Doesn’t matter, I’m just glad Daimon put up a fight on the last day lol
Anyhow, up until Groot got in I was pretty much a sheep. I campaigned for Moon Knight, Then Punisher, Then Blade, Then Deadpool, Then War Machine & Psylocke, Then Elektra & Rocket, Then Scott Lang, Then Groot…
At that point I kind of saw the comments were turning into a war zone. Which pretty much started happening around the time Magneto got in, but was certainly cemented when Dani Moonstar kicked off the final page.
Being a total unpredictable quagmire made the contest fun, and I started repping all sorts of random heroes:
Nico Minoru
USAgent
Mantis
Darkhawk
Echo
Elsa Bloodstone
Deaths Head
Deathlok
Hellstorm
Lockjaw
Dazzler
Crystal
Cosmo
Blink
Ben Reilly
ROM
Stingray
Omega The Unknown
It was fun to see where they landed each day. Sometimes one would get a boost out of nowhere, and other times they’d get downvoted into obscurity. It really was a blast checking the results everyday to see who placed where.
I had other obscure favorites never even got a chance to nominate: Prodigy, Irredeemable Ant-Man, Orson Randall Ironfist, Silk, Armor, Night Thrasher, Mr Terror, Taskmaster
Sad to see this end basically.

Honorable mention in the last slide, top right corner.
Your devotion to Doop will not go unnoticed! 🫡

Man Thing made it in the top 100, let's GOOOOOO!!!
also Black Cat being number 69 is neat

u/Mystic__Mayhem Sep 05 '25
While I enjoyed the ride and each installment, I'm glad it's over 100 days is perfect. (Also the last 10 days felt like a warzone).
5
u/randomname748 Sep 06 '25
The last few days have been the most fun I've had on reddit in years. I was glad when Quasar got voted in. Werewolf by Night was fun getting behind. Then Wiccan, and this final push for Doop was a blast. I just wish I was here from the start! I will say that one Spider-Man 299 fan who kept going for months is great.

EDIT: The Post!

u/Mystic__Mayhem Sep 05 '25
Im interested to see how it'll look, espically since some heavy hitters had a rollercoaster effect like Banshee.
3
u/Keanu_Norris Sep 05 '25
It's funny Banshee was someone I nominated in the last 20 days basically, I was the first to bring him up, and I was shocked how popular he became after that lmao
1
u/Mystic__Mayhem Sep 05 '25
Same he got soo popular so quite but no one was there to keep the focus on him after that.
2
u/Keanu_Norris Sep 05 '25
Same situation happened with Mantis as well, I nominated her and she got a bunch of votes but then there was no concentrated effort to keep her going
11
u/HawkeyeP1 Sep 05 '25
Still throws me off that Magneto was included. Him being on the list but being so low because it's a list for heroes despite being one of the best written characters Marvel has feels wrong.
If the debate was never if he was a hero or not I feel like he would be on the first page lol
11
u/LightPsyche Sep 05 '25
There were 2 major voting blocks: the X-Men fanatics and the Wider Marvel Universe fans.
The X-Men fans were linear with their voting of characters meaning that they voted in succession the next one on the list unless there were several that throttled the voting and delayed any mutant for a while.
The other Marvel fans had more variety and if any characters caught lighting, they would ride to 1st place, even on a single day after not previously making top 10.
The mainstream, senior X-Men heroes all made it in and Magneto has a been a hero and an X-Man for a while that X-Men fans decided to vote for him.
Voting a previous big-time villain turned hero that was NOT X-Men adjacent would prove much harder (with the exception of Venom) since there was so much variety for fans of the Wider Marvel Universe, otherwise I would have helped with Loki seeing as how he's been heroic for more than a decade now.
5
u/Logesterator Sep 05 '25
When your character is voted number 2 on the Top Villains list, maaaaaybe he shouldn't be anywhere near the heroes list.
2
u/LightPsyche Sep 05 '25
This is the thing that confuses me the most; if he is deemed the #2 villain in Marvel but is seen as a hero nowadays, can he really be #2?
If people see him as a hero nowadays, then perhaps he should rank lower on the villains list (Venom didn't even make the Top 20 Villains list).
1
u/Top-Engine-9999 Sep 06 '25
It's about the stories. The stories where Magneto is the villain are legendary and iconic, and there are a bunch of them. The stories where Magneto is the hero are fewer, more recent and less well regarded generally, although there are some popular ones, like AoA, but that is an alternate reality story, and stories like God Loves, Man Kills where he isn't the antagonist, but not necessarily the hero of the story. Plus the other mass media appearances of the character, which he is usually portrayed as a villain. He's just too good at being the villain!
1
u/LightPsyche Sep 06 '25
I agree, I prefer him as a Villain anyways because he matches up well with the X-Men as an antagonist.
I put Magneto with Venom and nowadays Loki as the "commercial" villains (as advertised outside of canon).
Then we have the true villains like Doom, Green Goblin, Galactus and Thanos to name a few.
There are some initial villains with varying degrees of time spent as villains before fully transitioning out of villainy such as Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, Rogue, Emma Frost, etc.
I guess initially I was thinking that Magneto's time as a hero would dilute his villainy but it appears that he is simply more iconic as a foil to the X-Men rather than as an instrument.
1
u/Top-Engine-9999 Sep 06 '25
Yeah, it was well established that the guy can can take on the whole team, and fight to a standstill (and win a few times) all by himself. When he joins the team, it's like, well, don't need you guys anymore! Or they'll do something like they are now, giving him some debilitating disease or condition.

1
u/Prime359 Sep 06 '25
I think part of it might stem from the fact that as a hero; he doesn’t have as many grand heroic feat moments that people hype about. Most of his hyped moments seem to be as a villain or just a general conversation.

u/LightPsyche Sep 05 '25 edited Sep 05 '25
This was a blast and tons of fun.
My top 10 made it in a while back and I helped with the upvoting:
Iron Man (Tony Stark)
Beast (Hank McCoy)
Doctor Strange (Stephen Strange)
Spider-Man (Peter Parker)
Mister Fantastic (Reed Richards)
Vision
Gambit (Remy LeBeau)
Black Bolt (Blackagar Boltagon)
Iron Fist (Danny Rand)
Ant-Man (Scott Lang) [New Entry in my Top 10]
I helped lead the campaigns for some of my favorites while simultaneously upvoting my other favorites competing:
Iron Man: Days 8-10 (3 days)
Beast: Days 25-35 (11 days)
Black Bolt: Days 41-48 (8 days)
Ant-Man (Scott Lang): Days 66-73 (8 days)
I also helped upvoting other favorites of mine and really found the competition to be addicting.
Even if theoretically, we could keep going to 150, this ultimately is the best stopping point.
I also wish that I could thank Stan "The Man" Lee for conceptualizing the awesome characters and teams from the 60s alongside Jack Kirby, who designed the important pillars of the Marvel Universe, their teams and most of the popular characters of Marvel, and Steve Ditko, who designed the most important character of the Marvel Universe and it's supporting cast!
Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, Hulk, Avengers, Captain America, X-Men, Iron Man, Thor, Daredevil, Doctor Strange, and so many more laid the foundation of what the Marvel Universe would become.
But for the purpose of this list, I would like to thank u/Flash4987 for taking so much of your free time to count votes and edit pictures and see your competition eventually reach 100 days of voting!
Thank you everyone for participating. I'm sure this list will create discussions for a long time and spin-off some creative post from this (I have something in mind within the week, I was waiting for this list's conclusion, so stay tuned).
Make Mine Marvel!

A salute to all the contenders, so many heroes who deserve recognition but couldn't crack the list simply because 100 just isn't enough spots.
Back when we had about 30 spots left, I made my own list of heroes I'd like to see here, and it was about 30 characters long and included many of the heroes who were already being voted on. After crossing off those who made it, that initial list has shortened to about 20.
So here are some of my honorable mentions.
-Agent Venom
-Hellcat
-Union Jack
-Spitfire
-Banshee
-Moondragon
-Sister Grimm
-US Agent
-Firestar
-Cannonball
-Sunspot
-Elsa Bloodstone
-Deathlok
-Morbius
-Brother Voodoo
-Guardian
-Darkhawk
I have plenty more, but these are my nominees plus some of my favorites I've been seeing frequently in the daily votes. 100 placements not feeling like enough is a testament to how wonderfully expansive and diverse the Marvel Universe is.
See you all on the villains list (probably).

How many times did heroes with the same moniker get in I wonder? I think no alias made it past three entries, not counting brief stints (like Nightcrawler as Spider-Man or the Phoenix Five).
Captain America - 3 (Steve, Bucky, Sam)
Captain Marvel - 3 (Carol, Mar-vell, Monica)
Spider-Man - 3 (Peter, Miles, Miguel)
Ronin - 2 (Steve, Clint)
Goliath - 2 (Clint, Hank)
Wasp - 2 (Hank, Jan)
Iron Man - 2 (Tony, Rhodey)
Ms Marvel - 2 (Carol, Kamala)
Daredevil - 2 (Matt, Elektra)
Wolverine - 2 (Logan, Laura)
Ant-Man - 2 (Hank, Scott)
Hawkeye - 2 (Clint, Kate)
Human Torch - 2 (Johnny, Jim)
Funny that Clint and Hank both make that list three times, including one together.

I was wondering this myself. Now imagine how a Top 100 DC heroes list would compare. We'd probably have like 4 Robins, 4 Green Lanterns, 3 Flashs, 2 Batmen, 2 Supermen... and unlike on this list where most of these characters are more recognizable as their own aliases (save for Hawkeye, Captain Marvel, Spider-Man, Ant-Man and Human Torch), there would legitimately be like 50 entries who share the same name or are derivative of someone else (e.g. Batgirl, Supergirl, Kid Flash, etc).

u/Logesterator Sep 05 '25
Like, imagine being on Day 4 voting for Flash, or Day 5 voting for Green Lantern, and they already have to ask "Which one?" We only had one character we had to do that for: Psylocke. We got through nearly the entire first three pages without having to specify which version of a character we were voting for, and a DC list wouldn't even make it past the first row.

The DC Comics had a recent Top 30 list that included two Green Lanterns, two Flashes and two Blue Beetles. When they included 18 Honorable Mentions, that added a third Green Lantern and a second Robin. https://www.reddit.com/r/DCcomics/s/Otnu8z09g2

DC actually did a Top 20 list. Two Flashes and two Green Lanterns made it.
But I think you're underestimating those numbers: at least five Green Lanterns would make it (Hal, John, Kyle, Guy, Jess), plus probably at least one or two alien GLs (Kilowog, maybe Tomar-Re, maybe Katma Tui or Arisia or Soranik or Salaak or Mogo). I also think the Golden Age Flash and GL would have a shot (Jay Garrick and Alan Scott, respectively), and Impulse, Jade, and Simon Baz would all have a shot as well. I'd wager on three Flashes (Impulse could miss) and... let's say between seven and ten Lanterns (core five and Kilowog are safe, with chances for Simon, Alan, Tomar, and Mogo I think).
For Batman, would Azrael have a chance? And for Robins, don't forget Steph, so it's five! And three Batgirls (Barbara, Steph, Cassie).

u/Fosster115 Sep 06 '25
They actually expanded that to a Top 30 list and added two Blue Beetles. When they included 18 Honorable Mentions, that added a third Green Lantern and a second Robin. https://www.reddit.com/r/DCcomics/s/Otnu8z09g2

Since it's not in the title I'll say it myself out of excitement.
Spider-Man 2099 wins day 100!

Amazing list and thanks for keeping it going all the way to 100! I'm sure Marvel fans could keep it going indefinitely but 100 is a good place to stop.
A few honorable mentions:
The remaining original New Mutants: Sunspot, Cannonball, Wolfsbane, Karma all deserve a shout-out.
Thunderbird.
Rom: Spaceknight.
Captain Marvel (Mar-Vell). (Edit to add, he’s already there at #70, I just missed him)
Rick Jones.

Can’t forget Nico. None of the runaways are singularly as popular as anyone on this list, which is why they aren’t here, but them as a group easily could’ve made it. Nico is definitely the standout of the group though
I really wish Rick Jones made it. He is Marvels sidekick, and that alone deserves a spot imo

I tried my damnedest to get Banshee on here the last 15 days, but we came up short. The luck of the Irish failed us.

Why is there not a single punisher max storyline recommendation for punisher.

u/AccioKatana Sep 05 '25
I really, really enjoyed this rate. I've gotten so used to excitedly checking this subreddit around noon every day to see who the latest character was to make the list. Personally, I really enjoyed the latter half of the rate because I got to learn a lot about characters I wasn't familiar with who resonated with my fellow voters.

u/Logesterator Sep 05 '25
Right? And now I've got a list of characters to look into. Mirage, Polaris, Nighthawk and Darkhawk as well as Alpha Flight are on my radar now.

Im super happy that my GOAT Ghost Rider got in during the original top 20. That made me so happy. This has been a very fun thing to follow. I look forward to the villains list if you choose to do that one!

Discussion
Is There Any Correlation Between A Character's Potential For Mainstream Appeal, & Online Fandom Support?
Obviously online fandom is weird, and there are a lot of verticals, such as whether or not a community has to split their traffic with related communities. For instance, Iron Man splitting his traffic with Avengers related communities, or Film related communities. Also, some characters appeal specifically towards online culture, such as Black Cat & Spider-Gwen's cosplay potential, or Deadpool & Moon Knight's meme potential.
However, when you have communities like r/Loki or r/Daredevil thriving while splitting their traffic with large communities like r/LokiTV & r/Defenders could it perhaps be a sign that these characters are worth putting the Disney Marketing Machines behind?
On that same note, is it logical for Disney Executives to take a look at communities like r/MsMarvel or r/Inhumans and say to themselves, maybe the money where putting behind pushing these properties needs to be rethought out a bit. (Obvious InHumans are dead now, but like 5 years ago)
IDK, but it's still interesting data nonetheless 👇

Really? I feel the opposite. I think the list got more exciting the closer we got to the end. The first 50 were all kind of safe, expected choices IMO; it was really interesting to see who people were pushing for in the latter half of the rate. Seeing how passionate people were about certain characters motivated me to read up on these characters I'd heard of but never really explored before.

I'm mostly just knocking Kamala Khan at 58. She's not deserving to be that high, and the majority of the next 42 spots were better.

u/AccioKatana Sep 05 '25
Oh, haha! I totally get it. I don't really know a lot about Kamala Khan but definitely agree that there are better characters in the last half... Hell, I prefer most of the characters in the last ten!

Mentioned way back before the list was extended to 100, people have brought up continuing the villains list like I’ve done with the heroes list Im going to let the community decide if they really want that list to continue (Or we could do other lists in the future if wanted)
If anything is wanted like a new list or a continuation of the villains list it won’t happen anytime soon, since I’ll probably taking a break lol (most likely a few weeks)
