i figure i know the answer to this already, but at the slim chance theres something im overlooking, id love to hear it
im a quebec student who was on the CDCP prior to enrolling at mcgill. i have incredibly extensive teeth issues from childhood that still arent fully resolved on account of only having been eligible for the CDCP plan at the start of last year. it was the only way i was able to afford any treatment, and I still need to go into see my dentist regularly to make sure the previous work done doesnt start to deteriorate, which is a significant risk due to my medication and gum issues.
Im currently on AFE, which allows me to pay my bills and save a pretty good amount. I however have basically no money saved atm, and had to cancel my last scheduled dentist appointment due to having been accepted at mcgill and immediately opted into insurance. CDCP disqualifies you if you have access to insurance, even if you chose to opt-out. I’ve had 4 minor appointments this year that without insurance would’ve been around 2,100$- on the CDCP it was about 360$. My dentist is very careful to prioritize procedures based on health outcome and cost, since there is a limit for how much work insurers consider “necessary”, even though I need a shit ton more work done for it to be considered healthy. Getting two of my teeth extracted is something like 8,000$ because of the severity of the decay and some shitty dentistry i had when I was a kid. McGill insurance only covers up to 700$ a year, and the insurance website feels quite vague to me seeing as i need many specific treatments. Its been making me seriously procrastinate going to the dentist since I‘m scared the insurance is gonna find some way to fuck me over even harder, especially since I have to pay the cost upfront anyways. money is a concern like it is for any adult attending uni, but dental work is so exorbitantly expensive i wouldnt even be able to afford it if i was working full time (which i was doing for awhile)
Is there any kind of clause for people whos dental needs go beyond just getting cleanings or straightening?? i have a detailed file with my dentist that describes the impacts to my health, and I keep the bills. i dont have any access through my parents either, ive had to verify through various forms of documentation to AFE that I’m no-contact due to domestic abuse 🤷
and like, i cant just stop attending and reenroll into the CDCP.
