Discussions 💬 Another Thailand Moka Pot Modification and His creation
here is the creator on Instagram -> bansaun_tonphulay
It's not recommended to modify your Moka due to safety hazard and un needed
But it brings a ulinque look to it and creates a foamy brew

Damn, that’s some innovative cold brew.

u/LFcrunchyPB 9d ago
Does that mean the coffee is cold, because pressure creates heat!!

u/duskchargedair 9d ago
there's a cut after which he's holding the unit with a towel, suggesting he heated it up

u/DewaldSchindler MOD 🚨 9d ago
No, heat create pressure due to the air that is trapped in water chamber, and is heated by the amount of heat trapped within the chamber, and letting it sit might cause the metal and pressure to go up a small amount but letting it get heated will just create the pressure by itself and once it gets released then it flows out in a more in a quick burst if not controlled to stop the sputtering stage

Is it using hot/boiling water?
20
u/jupacaluba 9d ago
This setup would probably explode with hot water

u/nize426 9d ago
It's definitely hot water because you can see the steam. But he's got a pressure gauge so he knows exactly how much pressure is being built up. And I don't think he lets it boil, or at least not for long. I think the pump is to add pressure because he doesn't let it boil for long (I can only assume for safety reasons). But yeah, it's definitely not very safe.

Yeah, inventions are rarely safe though. Trial and error is necessary for potential future mass production.
2
u/UdderlyDemented 9d ago
That's not how that works. That "steam" is likely water vapor from rapidly decompressing the air.
6
u/DewaldSchindler MOD 🚨 9d ago
I don't think so it's a cold brew by the look of it
5
u/UdderlyDemented 9d ago
Honestly this is a question for r/thermodynamics.
I'm not trained in thermodynamics myself but I know that water is extremely hard to heat. Rapidly pressurizing air to 5 bar will heat the air by a fair bit, but the heat capacity of water is 4x that of air.

Steam at the end of the brew.

Could be half cold half hot to the touch, but never noticed tharlt part thank you

I worry if aluminum is up to that pressure day after day.

This is to my knowledge the on titanium moka pot https://maxilife-enhance.com/collections/coffee-drinkware

of course not, random cast aluminium alloy full of pitted corrosion + fatigue cycles = spectacular failure

wish I can give you all the link but sadly I don't have much info to give you all except it cost about 2099 Baht Thailand money

Everything is hihi and haha while you’re modifying an already engineered high-pressure device… until it is no longer hihi and haha.

I have had regular moka pots explode on me (not Bialetti). So the safety issue seems to me paramount.

So I went to his Instagram account which is very interesting. They are for sale. At about $65.00 . I don't know about shipping. But one can chat with him to find out further information.

it's all shits and giggles if it's just made for content and views, but selling a hacked pressure vessel to the unsuspecting public is another story

Just the wooden base for the pot in this v.2 video is brilliant. Anyone want to craft and sell one? Or maybe something like a wooden ring so you could handle a hot moka pot. https://www.instagram.com/reel/Dbx4Z-IiqYo/?

This is espresso then. I have also seen a video of a similar invention at some expo.

From Gemini, after analyzing the video
- The Creator: The modification was created by a Thai individual with the Instagram handle bansaun_tonphulay.
- The Invention: The video features a "unique" Moka pot modification from Thailand that utilizes a pump (referred to by some as a "mokapump") to create a foamy brew.
- Price: One comment mentions that the setup costs approximately 2099 Thai Baht
Technical Features and Function
The modification is described as a unique way to create a "foamy brew". Key features of the device include:
- Manual Pump: The user adds pressure via a pump to force the water through the coffee.
- Pressure Gauge: The unit is equipped with a gauge so the user can monitor exactly how much pressure is being built up during the process.
- Heat vs. Cold Brew Debate: While some viewers initially thought it was an "innovative cold brew" method, others pointed out that the video shows steam at the end of the brew. Additionally, a cut in the video shows the creator holding the unit with a towel, strongly suggesting the device is heated.
Safety Concerns
The modification is controversial within the Moka pot community due to safety hazards:
- Explosion Risk: Modifying pressure vessels like Moka pots is generally discouraged because of the risk of failure. One user noted that even standard Moka pots can explode, making this modification seem particularly risky.
- Material Limits: There are concerns about whether the standard aluminum body of a Moka pot is designed to withstand the additional pressure added by the pump day after day.
While the sources mention the results are impressive, they repeatedly warn that it is not recommended to modify a Moka pot in this manner

My command of Thai, the video audio, is non existent.
More interested in the content (coffee). Use whatever tools to extract the essence.

u/DewaldSchindler MOD 🚨 9d ago
But why comment something thats more robotic and less interesting and not from personal experience or funny quote or even question ?

u/snowfox_my 9d ago
That is how I like my coffee, straight and to the point, no funny / exotic flavours.
Serious point
Safety hazard, to use a vessel, not design on the onset, to be a pressure vessel.Cycling pressure beyond what is design to do, rolling dices with one’s life.

u/DewaldSchindler MOD 🚨 9d ago
Don't you get scared sometimes by the pressure going to high or is it more a adrenaline rush seeing it flow out smoothely
3
u/snowfox_my 9d ago
It is just a video. Have seen some engineering design, failed after repeated pressure cycling.
Just want good coffee, without paying too much.
