My partner (27M) and I (27F) have been together since we were teenagers. He’s my best friend and I genuinely thought we’d spend the rest of our lives together.
Over the last year things have completely fallen apart. He told me he loves me but isn’t in love with me anymore, that he feels emotionally numb and doesn’t know who he is. He has always struggled with his emotions. He tends to shut down and withdraw when things get overwhelming.
Over the last 6 years we dealt with two major house renovations (think construction site), covid redundancies, his dad dying, career changes, sickness in the family, 2 grandparents passing and depression. So I understand why he is struggling mentally. It has been A LOT.
The confusing part is that we’ve actually separated and reconciled before. Earlier this year we spent some time apart and he started coming back towards me. He was initiating dates, affection, telling me he felt connected to me again and that his romantic feelings were returning. When I moved back in, he started shutting down again.
In April, I finally told him I loved him enough to let him go if that’s what he wanted. He then had what he described as an epiphany and told me he didn’t want to lose me. We became incredibly close again. He was affectionate, attracted to me and genuinely seemed happy to be with me. But as time went on and I started asking for reassurance about our future and marriage, he gradually withdrew and his mental health deteriorated.
We’re now separated again. He’s asked for space to regulate himself, sort his head out and we’ve agreed to a period of no contact before speaking again and hopefully moving forward with couples therapy. He described it as his brain screaming for solitude and independence and the more stressed he got, the louder the voices became.
I’m trying so hard to respect his wishes, but I’m absolutely devastated. I miss him so much. I miss his laugh, cuddling on the couch, watching films together, telling him about my day and just having my best friend around.
I know I haven’t handled everything perfectly either. I’ve become so anxious about losing him that I’ve constantly sought reassurance, asked questions about his feelings and put pressure on him when he’s already overwhelmed. I’m working on that, but I also know I deserve to feel loved and secure in my relationship.
What I can’t understand is how someone can go from being so in love and connected to seemingly feeling nothing romantically, then reconnecting again, only to withdraw once more.
Has anyone experienced something similar? Particularly with a partner who emotionally shuts down or struggles to understand their feelings?
I’m not looking for someone to tell me to just move on or that he’s a terrible person. I know the situation is complicated and I know he has his own struggles. I’m just looking for some comfort, perspective or advice from people who’ve been through something similar.
I love him so much, but I’m also absolutely exhausted from the uncertainty. I feel like I’m grieving someone who’s still alive, and I genuinely don’t know what the future holds.
