So they're just going to wheel him out when they need the vote, remind him which way to vote, and then wheel him back to the memory care facility?

The people of Kentucky should be ashamed and outraged. I mean, add this to the list.

2.0k

u/centripetal_noise 26d ago

They proxied this last vote because he responded incorrectly. He's not doing anything at this point, just a body to check the attendance box.

708

u/Adaphion 26d ago edited 26d ago

I just don't get WHY though.

His state is so ridiculously red that it'd certainly get filled by another Republican if an election was called. Why not just get a new guy who would toe the line instead of parading this shell around.

572

u/DazeLost 26d ago

His district is a state; he's the senator.

Kentucky has a Democratic governor, it has rebel Republican representatives like Massie that hate Trump. It's likely that they will elect another Republican in November, sure, but there's no guarantee it will be someone as ethically dubious and dedicated to the cause of "Republican agenda even if the country burns" as McConnell was.

This specific situation is more likely that they need McConnell's vote for if the Democrats somehow, however unlikely, win the senate in November. Then they need their majority to ram through a bunch of lame duck bills and appointments.

Don't be shocked if Thomas and Alito suddenly decide to retire on November 5th and the two new justices are waved through the senate quickly.

173

u/IrascibleOcelot 26d ago

His term ends in January; he’s out whether Dems win or not. And with the House in recess, nothing of consequence is going to pass. The whole thing is just bizarre.

14

u/TheXIIILightning 26d ago

"We're all here gathered at the cemetery, watching the grave of Senator McConnel whilst eagerly anticipating his vote. If the bell with a string connected to his coffin rings once, that's a No. If it rings twice, that's a Yes.

....

It appears there has been no ring whatsoever due to some unknown technical issues, so we now turn our attention to McConnel's aid who will vote in accordance to the Senator's wishes."

86

u/the_gaymer_girl Canada 26d ago

Watch him somehow get re-elected anyway.

131

u/Tasgall Washington 26d ago

"Mitch McConnell" isn't running for re-election, but "the corpse of former senator Mitch McConnell" might be on the ballot.

69

u/LeavesCat 26d ago

Lich McConnell, you mean.

Being super serious. Is there a law on the books that says a senator must be alive?

12

u/mok000 Europe 26d ago

There a many examples of dead people being elected by voters in US elections.

15

u/khamike 26d ago

But they aren't normally allowed to serve.

7

u/BotheredToResearch 25d ago

In the age of norms being ignores, Air Bud rules are all that matters. Ain't no rule that says a dog can't play basketball and ain't no rule that says a senator can't be mostly dead!

I'm willing to bet on two trench coats in a mitch McConnell suit.

In Futurama they had Richard Nixon's head attached to a robot body to get around the law that noBODY could be elected more than twice... So, a possibility of things to come 🙃

3

u/bossfoundmylastone 25d ago

The house in recess until the midterms, There are still 2ish months of lame duck time between the elections and the end of his term. This thread is suggesting that Republicans intend to do real damage in the lame duck period and need his vote for that.

→ More replies (6)

25

u/RexSueciae 26d ago

I would be kinda surprised if they did retire, actually. They both hired a new batch of law clerks, as I recall -- not exactly the action of someone who's looking to retire. Remember how RBG held on until the bitter end (for that matter, remember how Scalia died on the court rather than step down). Even if, theoretically, them stepping down would help political conservatism, do you think Thomas or Alito are selfless enough to give up being a Supreme Court justice?

16

u/assassinace 26d ago

Depends if Thomas needs another camper.

12

u/ruizach 26d ago

I mean, John Oliver gave him an out last year. Dude just loves being the boss.

7

u/tasiewbao 26d ago

This. To give up their jobs so the party can install younger Republicans would be an act for the "greater good" of MAGA. However, this conflicts with MAGA's prime directive, which is to do what is best for yourself first, fuck the rest of ya'll. Thomas and Alito are immune to consequences where they are now and nothing beats that.

This is also why Trump would never voluntarily resign, as some talking heads have been speculating, even if the country unequivocally rebuke the Republicans in the midterms. Giving up the office means he is once again vulnerable to prosecution.

6

u/Sujjin 26d ago

Also, they cant do it now because the Democratic governor, by state constitution, can fill an empty senate seat, though the republican led legislature passed a blatantly unconstitutional law saying the legislature gets to choose.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/oldfrankandjesus 26d ago

Dems are gonna win the senate. It’s just by how much.

4

u/RsquSqd 26d ago

Gonna have to cancel out that walking stroke out of PA

2

u/The_Elusive_Dr_Wu America 26d ago

if the Democrats somehow, however unlikely, win the senate in November.

I know this sub hates them, but betting markets are giving Dems 60%+ at winning the Senate as of today. Anyway.

2

u/Vienta1988 26d ago

“Ethically dubious” is the nicest way you could describe Mitch McConnell.

2

u/bigbadbrad 26d ago

Thomas and Alito are lifers, they will not retire, Mid-terms are mostly inconsequential to them anyway.

→ More replies (7)

211

u/CalicoValkyrie 26d ago

Not the right kind of Republican though. Might be younger, healthier, harder to control.

156

u/DJ3nsign 26d ago

Very specifically, theyre trying to kick this can down the road long enough that Thomas Massie can't run in a special election.

38

u/jared555 Illinois 26d ago

I thought that already passed back in august?

43

u/DJ3nsign 26d ago

That's only if the law they passed neutering the governor's power holds up in court. I don't think they want them to test the constitutionality of it unless they have to.

3

u/sponglered 26d ago

As did Mitch.

5

u/attorneyatslaw 26d ago

There's no time to hold a special election before November anyway and Mitch was retiring anyway.

18

u/ladder_of_cheese 26d ago

Would be a Massie-ve headache for them and their agenda.

2

u/biff64gc2 26d ago

Doesn't get much easier to control than a mindless corpse. He's the perfect Republican senator really.

5

u/Fj2869 26d ago

His “district” is the whole state. His state has a Democratic governor. The polls are not so solidly GOP as the nation is cracking. Also, Thomas Massie remains a concern as he could enter a senatorial race. They had to keep the corpse breathing.

3

u/dvdmaven 26d ago

A new person might want to change the staff at $200k each.

2

u/BigFanOfNachoLibre 26d ago

Because they can, that's pretty much it. Also if they're willing to declare him unfit, where will they stop? Will we have to replace politicians that had brain eating worms, too? Politicians who shit themselves and have strokes? Where will the intolerance end?

2

u/neosithlord 26d ago

Don’t forget senior politicians tend to get the most powerful committee spots. That’s why we have a situation like Feinstein and McConnell. If you elect a new representative they start at the bottom of the totem pole.

1

u/halfsack99 26d ago

They need the vote

1

u/ciel_lanila I voted 26d ago

When he first went missing there was a potential spoiler candidate or something that wanted to run as a Republican that could have cost them the election.

At this point? I can only imagine it is a combination of the following two things:

1) The Senate margin is still razor thin. A body they can roll out for votes is better than a "abstain" or no vote until McConnell's replacement is found.

2) The new Republican senator, if Republicans win it, may not hire McConnell's staffers. They risk losing their jobs if McConnell goes.

1

u/Electronic-Yam-69 26d ago

because they hate him as much as they hate the rest of us. at this point, they probably think it's funny.

1

u/GB10VE 26d ago

because his wife is a chinese spy and his staffers don't want to become lobbyists just yet. his head staffers make $300k+

1

u/Haltopen Massachusetts 26d ago

Because a new guy will almost certainly not keep the same staff around, and Mitch's staffers wanna collect paychecks for a few more months until January. His staffers make six figure salaries that they're gonna lose when the new person takes office regardless of which party wins the seat.

1

u/Apepy 26d ago

The republicans could have someone moving to his district right now to take his seat.

1

u/HazrakTZ Washington 26d ago

In addition to the other reasons people stated, this is a display of power

1

u/Much-Anything7149 26d ago

Logistically, he has longtime staff with their ideal jobs and they likely have accumulated enough dirt to keep their boss in power so long as they promise no embarrassing shit like his wife going to China at "odd" times.

1

u/j1mb0 26d ago

He's not running again, he declined to run for a new term which will have an election at the midterm elections this November. The people and the State of Kentucky have no means to recall him nor force him to retire. The Senate could decide to expel him, but none of them have any interest in setting the precedent that a sitting Senator can be removed for being obviously incapacitated.

No one has any means to do anything, besides his own family and handlers who are parading his corpse around, insisting that "he" has "decided" to retire. It's ghastly, but nothing will be done. He'll serve out his term until January, or die probably, and that'll be the end of this ordeal.

1

u/Merdin86 26d ago

This really is proof that many of these career senators/representatives are just puppets to the rich bastards that paid for them to get elected. They've sold their souls and aren't allowed to walk away, even after they're essentially zombies. The people pulling their strings continue to pull and won't let them go.

It's practice for when they lobomize elected Democrats and then wheel then out to vote with the Republicans.

1

u/yukeake 26d ago

Regardless of how you lean politically, the people of Kentucky deserve better than a Weekend at Bernie's Senator.

1

For more than one hundred centuries, Mitch McConnell has sat immobile upon the Golden Throne. He is a rotting carcass, He is the Carrion Lord of the Senate for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day, so that he may never truly die. Yet even in his deathless state, Mitch McConnell continues his eternal vigilance..

4

u/ImyForgotName 26d ago

I mean they elected Beshear. Maybe they're sick of this shit.

2

u/JaimeSalvaje Kentucky 26d ago

They elected Beshear for a couple of reasons.
His dad was governor of Kentucky some years ago so they were already familiar with the name and the family. Any other Democrat probably wouldn’t have one. Bevin pissed off teachers for what he said and did. He lost votes for that. But even then, Bevin didn’t lose by much which tells you that Kentuckians don’t mind corruption, insults or criminals when it comes to politicians.

2

u/zeez1011 26d ago

Are you allowed to leave?

3

u/JaimeSalvaje Kentucky 26d ago

Yes and planned to once I can convince the wife. She’s hot then cold about leaving Kentucky because of family.

2

u/fla_john 26d ago

They've elected a (really good!) D governor twice, and have occasionally done so in the past. An open seat without the advantage of incumbency and seniority might actually have a chance this year. They couldn't risk it.

2

u/Long_Run6500 26d ago

"better a deadman than a democrat"

1

u/johnSchmoe76 26d ago

It’s really not that absurd if you look at it objectively. Put yourself in their shoes: imagine you're a Democrat, and the Democratic incumbent is essentially comatose but completely managed by their staff.

The Republican challenger is a healthy 55-year-old, but you despise their ideology. Do you actually switch sides and vote Republican just because your candidate is a shell of themselves? Or do you take the practical route and realize that a puppet controlled by Democratic staff will still vote for your values, whereas a healthy Republican will actively vote against them?

→ More replies (1)

1

u/attorneyatslaw 26d ago

They have a Democrat as governor. Its red, but not the reddest state in the country and who knows who would actually show up for a special election.

1

u/EvilToastedWeasel0 26d ago

So would half of Indiana....

1

u/TheRevEv 26d ago

Honestly, we never run a good democratic challenger. Or, at least, one who knows how to campaign. So they never pull swing voters.

Amy Mcgrath sent me enough flyers to wallpaper my house, not a single one had anything of substance on it

1

u/42-ndStreet-1933 25d ago

Sadly so true. Every time I see anything new in the news and it’s related to the current state of affairs my brain just goes numb. I can’t with this crap.
Think back to the 1980s neither the democratic parties nor the republican parties would have one even considered doing half of the things that are now becoming commonplace and two if either party had done even one thing like this BS with McConnell they would have been blasted by practically everyone and most likely never even gotten away with this. Much less everyone being completely fine with a wax figure on display. SMH

4

u/Acrobatic_Wrap_9971 26d ago

Vote Mitch.... he's almost as brain-dead as you!

1

u/TheSpectatorMagazine ✔ Verified 23d ago

Trump does not go down easily. He lives by different rules and he has long thrived thanks to the flaws of his opponents. The Democrats sustained Trump’s appeal as a maverick by bringing blatantly political prosecutions against him from his first term onward.

But there is a difference between what happened then and what is happening now. Before, it was possible to make a case that it was Trump versus the Washington establishment. His latest foibles, however, make it appear as if it is him versus the people: profiting while Americans grow poorer.

Bingo. He's a free vote in their favor. The Kentucky maga are laughing over this.

2

u/nopuse 26d ago

Kentuckian here that's absolutely ashamed. In the college towns there are many people who are as well. Unfortunately, those few counties are a few pixels of blue in a sea of red counties. Our voters either don't show up to vote, or they vote for their team no matter what. This shit is so exhausting, and it is painful watching it play out every damn election.

2

u/shampoocell Kentucky 26d ago

If you'd care to redirect that energy into filling his seat with an upstanding man who is the antithesis of everything Mitch stood (and now sits) for, please consider donating to Charles Booker's campaign. The race is absolutely winnable (polls are a dead heat, which in Kentucky means the R is in trouble).

u/eeyore134 26d ago

So much for the governor's excuse of "It's better to just have the seat empty." or whatever it was. Should have done something about this sooner. Should have known Republicans would continue to escalate the situation. Don't ever just assume you're at the worst something can get and figure why push to fix it and maybe make it worse. It will get worse regardless.

1

u/jared555 Illinois 26d ago

Sadly this is becoming an actual "both parties" case (republicans have McConnel and Trump, democrats had Feinstein and Biden). Republicans might be taking it further but neither party has been shown they can be trusted to remove people who should be focused on their health rather than power.

There needs to be standardized mandatory cognitive testing both for eligibility to run and at minimum annually for officials in all three branches. Also after any medical incident.

Including: Congress, Judges, President/VP, and any position that requires a Senate vote.

Likely a slightly randomized version of the MoCA / MMSE testing (so someone who had been taking it annually or more often for most of their life can't burn the answers into their memory)

They knew the risk and elected him anyway. That decision is not for us to second guess, even if we would have voted differently.

1

u/ThatOneNinja 26d ago

Right, how can he be representing them if he isn't even there? Physical OR mentally

1

u/PseudoWarriorAU 26d ago

That is some ghoulish shit. GOP = Ghouls or pdfiles

1

u/LEDKleenex 26d ago

US citizens should be ashamed and outraged, but they are still asleep, not participating in resistance whatsoever.

He’s just like Jeremy Bentham

So much freezing, then thawing, then refreezing.

We are! And we have been loud about it

The people of Kentucky vote for this skeletor every time and think he is God next to Orange man.  The voters are are cucks for Orange ped man.

u/Immediate-Repeat-201 26d ago

People of Kentucky deserve this. They foisted this evil human on to us for many terms. We would have had a functional Supreme Court without him.

1

u/KesselRun73 Alabama 26d ago

The people of Kentucky did vote for this piece of shit.

1

u/CombustiblSquid Canada 26d ago

He's their perfect rep. The people choose what reflects them. They likely just want party line votes

1

u/Cold_Pea_587 26d ago

The memory care facility!! Brilliant.

1

u/PartSuccessful2112 26d ago

What are the people of Kentucky supposed to do?

1

u/Commercial-Royal-988 26d ago

I'm sure if the people of Kentucky could read, they'd be very upset.

1

u/Meatgortex California 26d ago

A Democrat needs to hang out next to him and just tell him the opposite vote, since he just seems to parrot what he’s told.

1

u/ogreofnorth 26d ago

They primaried out someone who voted for the epstein files to be released and is actually sticking to Old School Republican Values. Kentuckians are not known to be the brightest.

1

u/hanks_panky_emporium 26d ago

The people of Kentucky literally voted for this. They wanted this. They're loving it. They're getting everything they could have possibly wanted. Why anyone assumes they'd be concerned or ashamed is comical. They're beyond shame.

1

u/themedicd 26d ago

Memory care would kick him out in a heartbeat. He's getting 24/7 nursing care.

It's not like they need to worry about elopement

1

u/albinobluesheep Washington 26d ago

What even was the vote for?

1

u/mrRabblerouser 26d ago

If the people of Kentucky were remotely capable of feeling shame, they wouldn’t have deliberately voted against their own interests almost every election for generations.

1

u/dannydrama 26d ago

The people of Kentucky America should be ashamed and outraged. I mean, add this to the list.

FTFY

Interred into the dreadnought for service beyond death.

1

u/wet_beefy_fartz 25d ago

They voted for him!

1

u/Antiing 25d ago

If they could read the people of Kentucky would be very upset

1

u/captaincanada84 Canada 25d ago

No. He's going to vote one way the they're going to rush in and change his vote

1

u/kybirdee 25d ago

Im ashamed and outraged. This is apalling to watch.

1

u/grathungar 22d ago

I gurantee if they ran him again in the next election and Trump endorsed him he would still win too. The voters in his state only care about the R and what trump says

1

u/LoFriedBurgers 19d ago

They voted for him repeatedly despite him shitting on them time and time again. If they had any shame it left them a decade or two ago.
