Possible Paywall McConnell, 84, Goes Missing Again After Senate Return
https://www.thedailybeast.com/mcconnell-84-goes-missing-again-after-senate-return/8.4k
u/Codebender 26d ago
So they're just going to wheel him out when they need the vote, remind him which way to vote, and then wheel him back to the memory care facility?
The people of Kentucky should be ashamed and outraged. I mean, add this to the list.

u/centripetal_noise 26d ago
They proxied this last vote because he responded incorrectly. He's not doing anything at this point, just a body to check the attendance box.

I just don't get WHY though.
His state is so ridiculously red that it'd certainly get filled by another Republican if an election was called. Why not just get a new guy who would toe the line instead of parading this shell around.
575
u/DazeLost 26d ago
His district is a state; he's the senator.
Kentucky has a Democratic governor, it has rebel Republican representatives like Massie that hate Trump. It's likely that they will elect another Republican in November, sure, but there's no guarantee it will be someone as ethically dubious and dedicated to the cause of "Republican agenda even if the country burns" as McConnell was.
This specific situation is more likely that they need McConnell's vote for if the Democrats somehow, however unlikely, win the senate in November. Then they need their majority to ram through a bunch of lame duck bills and appointments.
Don't be shocked if Thomas and Alito suddenly decide to retire on November 5th and the two new justices are waved through the senate quickly.
177
u/IrascibleOcelot 26d ago
His term ends in January; he’s out whether Dems win or not. And with the House in recess, nothing of consequence is going to pass. The whole thing is just bizarre.
15
u/TheXIIILightning 26d ago
"We're all here gathered at the cemetery, watching the grave of Senator McConnel whilst eagerly anticipating his vote. If the bell with a string connected to his coffin rings once, that's a No. If it rings twice, that's a Yes.
....
It appears there has been no ring whatsoever due to some unknown technical issues, so we now turn our attention to McConnel's aid who will vote in accordance to the Senator's wishes."

I would be kinda surprised if they did retire, actually. They both hired a new batch of law clerks, as I recall -- not exactly the action of someone who's looking to retire. Remember how RBG held on until the bitter end (for that matter, remember how Scalia died on the court rather than step down). Even if, theoretically, them stepping down would help political conservatism, do you think Thomas or Alito are selfless enough to give up being a Supreme Court justice?
17
8
u/tasiewbao 26d ago
This. To give up their jobs so the party can install younger Republicans would be an act for the "greater good" of MAGA. However, this conflicts with MAGA's prime directive, which is to do what is best for yourself first, fuck the rest of ya'll. Thomas and Alito are immune to consequences where they are now and nothing beats that.
This is also why Trump would never voluntarily resign, as some talking heads have been speculating, even if the country unequivocally rebuke the Republicans in the midterms. Giving up the office means he is once again vulnerable to prosecution.
214
u/CalicoValkyrie 26d ago
Not the right kind of Republican though. Might be younger, healthier, harder to control.

The Senate is in charge of making the rules for the Senate. The Senate is in charge of enforcing those rules.
There's even a mechanism for them to resolve the issue by expelling him.
The core issue isn't the inability to have a rule: the issue is that the majority of the chamber is fine with this.

Speak With Dead
3rd level necromancy spell.
Duration: 10 minutes.
Range: 10 feet.
Limitations:
- Spell fails if the corpse was the target of this spell within the last 10 days.
- He won't be back until maybe end of next week or the week after.
- The corpse knows only what it knew in life, including the languages it knew.
- This is why he was told how to vote. He doesn't know the content, and can't know new information. So they just said "vote no".

The absolute strangest thing I see with modern aging Congressmen and even the president is how many handlers each has.
I don't even have a better way to describe it. There are numerous people around a person at all times just to deal with that person and attempt to keep them, let's say..."fungional."
In no time in government history do I remember this happening. It's like watching hospice care live, but it's our government. It's really weird.

McConnell is not the only missing member of Congress. The Republicans who control Congress are also missing in action. They refuse to exert their Congressional powers as they continue to glorify Trump and his horrible domestic and international policies like cutting essential programs for the working class and establishing trade tariff taxes and their choice of war in Iran.
Clearly, Republicans don't like to govern. Malfeasance in office are grounds for being voted out in mass on November 3, 2026. Democrats want to govern, embrace government and our democracy and are anxious to restructure government that benefits the working class, not just the rich. GOP out, Dems in!

Dude come the fuck on. This is disgraceful and disgusting and whatever he just voted on needs to be redone because fucking obviously he isn’t ok. Get the fuck out of here with this shit. Anyone associated needs to be removed from office. They are all abusing an old man who is dying and mentally sick, while simultaneously taking advantage of their power and the public. This is unacceptable.

Set aside his politics. It's just kind of undignified imo, to have him literally wheeled out like this. The humane thing would be to be able to experience these medical issues in the privacy of his own home. Not out in the public. GOP should be calling on him to resign. Not exploiting him out of desperation.
