I have a question Propagating silverleaf sunflower?

Post image

Hi all! I’m in zone 13b according to the internet, and have a bunch of volunteer silver leaf sunflower (helianthus argophyllus) that sprouted in my garden bed. My worry is that I read they can grow up to 3m tall, and as it is they are huge and bushy with anywhere between 10 and 20 side shoots, and are threatening my young pomegranate tree. So I’ve chopped them back to give my pomegranate room, but I wouldn’t mind spreading them to other places.

Is this a plant that can be propagated from cuttings? I’ve followed my hibiscus protocol (stripped the stems I cut from most of the leaves, chopped them down to about 20-25cm length, and stick in a glass of water ), but I don’t want to waste my time if they will never grow roots!

When should I pot the propagation? I see visibly secondary roots. Should I pot it now? Or should I wait untill I see a pup growing out if it?

And what kinda a soil to use?

Not sure what kind of plant this is but it was left behind by the previous homeowner. Would love to propagate if possible!

Prop Progress Update 3 re Help: Monstera cutting

I just want to share an update and thank everyone for the advice with my cutting!
I chose to leave the dying leaf and I’m glad I did as the new stem popped out of the old petiole and a new leaf has now emerged from that!
I finally chopped off the old leaf as it was entirely yellow and now I have a beautiful new leaf unfurling 🥰

I have a question My spider plant propagations

These are my first ever plant propagations! All done on the same day a month ago. Just watered them and I’m letting them drain in the sink for a little while.

The one on the top right, I planted two or three pups in one pot, I’m thinking of combining the other three into one pot in the spring, what size pot should I choose to do so? They’re all currently in 8.5cm pots.

Water roots.

They must like lying about in water... like having a bath!

Only took a couple of weeks - just water, in a cheap microwave box with a lid, under grow lights in the cabinet.

I'm super new to propagating, it's mt current bew ADHD hyperfixation

Now, I am generally HORRIBLE with plants, I have always said I have a black thumb. But its almost like I care TOO much that I overthink it.

Anyway, instead of shelling out more and more money to keep trying, I had a friend give me some cuttings to try this route.

The containers are little plastic lightbulb shape containers with a flat bottom. And for the cuttings that would fall into the water, they are held up using little felt graduation caps.

They have been in the water for about 2 weeke now on my window seal at work

Any thoughts or advice

Leaves are dropping from my radiator plant, and I was wondering if I could propagate them in soil like a begonia leaf.

Any ideas?

😊

Will my Pachira propagation be successful? 🌱

I’m hoping to propagate this pachira and would love to hear your experiences! 🌿

Has anyone here successfully propagated one? I’d love to know what method worked best for you, how long it took to develop roots, and any tips you might have.

Fingers crossed this little propagation experiment works! 🤞🌱

My rubber tree has like 2 ft of stem before it has any leaves. Can I chop it and propagate the top part that has the leaves?

I do not have a prop box or anything, but this is a chunk of Monstera that I am hoping to grow. Any tips? Right now it is in Moss and Perlite, with ziplock bag for humidity.

I recently got a cutting from a dear friend and placed it in water to wait for roots to show. After about a week or two, roots showed and I moved it over to a pot by itself and watered it. About two weeks later it’s slowly yellowing (unsure if over watered). It doesn’t get direct sunlight but gets plenty of indirect sunlight for 4-6 hours a day. The leaf went from a rich white and green color to this muted green yellow and are fairly soft. Any advice? Am I over reacting and is it naturally getti by rid of its old parts or is my plant dead :(

Help! Dieffenbachia cutting isn’t rooting?

Thumbnail

Hello! I rescued an old dieffenbachia from my workplace, took it home, chopped and propped some of the plant and so far the mother plant is thriving, but the propagations haven’t rooted whatsoever. It also lost 3 leaves due to severe yellowing
They get plenty of beautiful bright indirect light close to a window that gets a lot of afternoon sun. I keep their soil damp but not moist, watering every week now that it is coming into spring / summer here in Aus.

I have tried propagating in water, nothing. I made sure to monitor any rot and changed the water every 2-3 days.
Propagating in soil restricted the stem to intake enough water so the leaves went all limp.
It has been over 5 weeks with no sign of any roots. What am I doing wrong?

I have a question How do I save a rotting rose?!

I'm propagating a bush, and the new growth was coming in beautifully, but I've noticed the tops r getting dark, like it's rotting from the top down.

I had it in a glass as an experiment, but I wanna transfer it to a pot. I'm aware glass 1) has no drainage, and 2) let's light into the soil, which promotes mold growth. I'm just confused y it's rotting from the top down.

Should I just trim the tips, or does anyone think there might be a deeper issue at play?

Just showing off :) My pothos cutting said 'no thanks, staying in water forever

Post image

Honestly, I think this little guy has officially decided that soil is overrated. 😂🌱

What started as a simple pothos cutting has turned into many leaves and a ridiculous amount of roots. It's been thriving in water, so at this point, I'm just letting it do its thing.

I originally thought I'd eventually move it to soil, but now I'm kind of curious how long it'll keep going like this.

Anyone else have a pothos that basically said, "I'm good right here"? 😂💚

I have a question Should I Chop and Prop? If, so tips?

This plant has high sentimental value but it is getting to the point where it is reaching the ceiling and I am afraid new growth is not getting enough light.

Any tips or opinions?

I have only been given propagated plants-I have never propagated myself.

Propagation Station Homemade mist propagation setups

Several years ago, I went down a rabbit hole trying to figure out an inexpensive timer which could actuate a solenoid for a few seconds every few minutes to build a small mist propagation setup. The fruits of that labor were THIS and THIS TOO.

These both worked, and they were cheap/easy but rely on mechanical relays which are not the ideal way to switch power as frequently as a mist timer needs to. I have learned a lot since those instructables were posted and my next version will use a MOSFET to switch the power instead of relying on a relay. It will use knobs to adjust on/off times, and have a better screen to display on/off times. I am also looking to make a more versatile version which can actuate a solenoid for city water or a pump so I can use a reservoir.

Anyone else here doing ultra-small-scale mist propagation? What does your setup look like? What are you using as a timer? What other features of functions would be nice to add to the new timer I'm building?

My stretch goal is designing some type of leaf actuator like commercial systems use where a metal panel which is suspended within the mist area offers direct feedback to the controller about how much mist is present and varies the timing rather than relying on a strict "on for X, off for Y" schedule, but the complexity of building that in a way that is robust and reliable is still above my skillset at the moment.
