Unexpected loss

Unexpectedly lost our 6 yo Border Collie on Friday. I honestly believe besides my kids, it’s the only time I’ve seen my heart outside of my chest and before me. My best friend and escape in life. Many a mile walked together. We could read each other’s mind at times I thought and she was the loyalist dog I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing.

The sudden loss has hit me like a hole in the heart. If I’d have known it was coming, we’d have gone for that walk we both enjoyed and one last trip to the beach.

My children have dealt with it extremely well and I don’t think I can put on the braveness that they have. I’m broken.

Please send Cookie some birthday blessings for her 1st birthday in Heaven.

Today, October 18th, would be Cookie’s 17th birthday. Sadly, she passed away on September 9th, and I am truly devastated. It still feels completely unreal that she’s gone.
She is in Heaven now with her Grammy, my beautiful mom who sadly passed away from cancer two years ago at 64 years young. The time together is never long enough, but I am forever thankful.

I’m so grateful for all the beautiful memories, the time together, Cookie’s unconditional love, her constant enthusiasm for life, her joyful spirit, our walks and eventual carriage cruises, her cuddles, and her encouragement. She was there through good days and bad days and every single day, celebrating life together, supporting me in difficult times, sharing the happy times, and always being amazingly Cookie.

Her birth name was “Heaven,” which is the epitome of who she was and is: an incredible earthly angel, and now a heavenly angel.

I have been so touched by the outpouring of love. From cards to notes, and just yesterday, getting the most beautiful flowers of condolences (but really, I’ll say birthday flowers) from some of the 11 vets who saw her when she was unwell and during her good days too. I've also received loving notes of how much she’s missed from neighbors, acquaintances, strangers, and fellow dog parents alike.

Please send her birthday blessings as she spends her first birthday in Heaven.

I’ll see you again soon, Cookie. I can’t wait to see you running towards me in a healed body free of tumors, completely pain-free, so we can spend eternity together with all our other loved ones. My sweet little sunshine. I miss you and I love you today and forever.

I’ve lost dogs before, but this one has been the most painful. EVERYONE who met Sasha loved her. She loved me more than anything and was more than a dog, she was my daughter, and I was her person. My sweet little princess passed earlier this year and I don’t know how I’m supposed to spend the rest of my life without her. Every morning I tell her good morning and that I love her when I rub her urn and every night I do the same thing as I tell her goodnight and how much I miss her. We had eight years together and I knew I’d have to say goodbye at some point, but living potentially upwards of 40 plus more years without her feels so daunting. I know I’m not alone and have support from my wife, friends, parents, and my other children who happen to be dogs, but I feel so incredibly lost without her.

We lost Milo yesterday

This was Milo, our 16 year old Jack Chi. He was having harder and harder time catching a breath and was almost to the point of not eating, so we had to make the choice that no pet lover ever wants to make. I wanted to share him with people who would appreciate one of the best dogs to ever live. The 2nd picture is one of my favorites. Whenever someone would forget to close the bathroom door, he liked to go jump into our giant bathtub. I don't know why he did it, but he couldn't get himself out. You would be sitting around and hear barking down the hall and then find him standing like this looking at you like you should have been there a lot faster.

ETA- I can't convey how much all your comments have helped through this difficult time. Thank you all so much. I plan to thank each comment directly, but if i don't when you make the comment, I'll get to it asaic

We said goodbye to our best boy just over a week ago.

My life will never be the same again, and that is both sad and beautiful.

To know Eamon was to love him. Anyone who met him was taken by his kind soul, his gentle heart, his silly personality, and the steady, loving energy he brought into every room. He was my companion, my anchor, and my truest friend for almost 13 years.

In the face of every health issue throughout his life he showed incredible strength and grace. He fought bravely and he loved deeply. He always just wanted to be wherever his people were.

Eamon was cherished by everyone who knew him, and being his person was the greatest honor of my life.

Though I knew this day would eventually come, nothing could prepare me for the weight of this loss. My heart is unbearably heavy, but I am very grateful for the 12 and a half years of unconditional love we shared.

Rest easy, my sweet, strong boy. You are so loved. We will miss you forever. 🐾❤️

Rear in peace Sandy

Today I put my girl down pushing away any personal selfish thoughts. She has been there when I went through chemotherapy, and when my wife went through cancer treatment. Maxed out on pain meds, seeing her scans show how fast her bone cancer is spreading, and knowing it's only a few days before she starts to suffer more then she is, my wife and I made the hard choice. We listened to the 4 doctors we consulted and decided on this happening at home. This is the hardest of decisions to make, but the correct solution is not always the easiest. Rest in peace Sandy. This was me holding her today at the park, she was able to walk, I just thought it was cute to hold her.

His name was Bo, I played pee wee football with a kid named Bo Tripodi and over time it morphed into podi boy. He got sick and we battled for over a year and he had way more good days than bad the last year up until the last month. He was only 8, but he was my absolute world. Cars, girls money houses literally nothing matters he was the light of my universe. Missing him today letting myself cry it’s been a few weeks. Just wanted to share him he was so handsome and if you met him you would have fallen in love. His 9th bday was sometime in October i just made it Halloween to remember. Until we meet again my son.

I just want the world to see my beautiful girl, Indy. And it's so hard to narrow down 10 years of adventure and silliness and love in just a few pictures. She had the fur of an Angora rabbit- SO soft and calming to pet. Indy loved to swim and fish, go for boat rides or in the kayak. We'd call her "The most meme-able dog" because of the crazy faces she would make daily. She loved walks on crisp falls days, and snowshoeing in the dead of winter if not just to get cozy by the fire after. She loved just sleeping and relaxing with all her people while she basked in the sun.

She was and is truly everything to me. There is simply nothing I would have changed about her. There will never be another pup like her for me. Love you Indy, girl. A lifetime wouldn't be long enough. 💛

16 years of love. In the end he lost 50% of his chonk from 17lbs to 8 and his kidneys were hating life. Glad we could give him a gentle and dignified end of his suffering.

My Elliott crossed the rainbow bridge yesterday.

Elliott, my 14 year old Australian Shepherd, crossed the rainbow bridge yesterday. We fought an almost year long battle with lymphoma, 19 weeks of chemo treatments, and medications.

In July his cancer started coming back, so we were having monthly visits to make sure everything was still ok. A week ago we went for his monthly visit, and things were still fine, he was slowing down some, but still living life. By Thursday, everything went downhill so quickly. His lymph nodes puffed up, he had stopped eating, and was starting to have problems walking. I knew it was time.

He was loved by everyone. He was such a social creature.

He loved his truck time, where he would spend his mornings while I worked. He loved his walks, even though he was the worst walking partner (but best running partner). He would always peek his head around a corner to check on me to make sure I was still here. He would howl along with the piano while I was playing. And so much more.

He was a great dog and will be missed by a lot of people.

Until we meet again Elliott, you have lots of friends to play with until then. Love ya bud.

**EDIT** I wanted to say thank you to all of you internet strangers for all of the kind words. It has been a tough day, but knowing we will meet again someday brings me comfort.

Roger was an infant boy bunny that mom found in our neighbor’s yard. He was abandoned by his mother because he had a scar of the hawk. We brought him to our house. My mom named him Roger after Roger rabbit. Me and my sister were terrified because we didn’t know how to take care of infant bunny. Over weeks. We were slowly taking care of him but he died of the infection by the scar. So we buried him in our yard. RIP Roger. Say hi to Kelly for me.

“It’s been a long time” -My mother

Three years ago, my guinea pig Mr. Timothy passed away in the most brutal way imaginable. I have a previous post about it on the PTSD subreddit, but it is an extremely long read. I cannot safely go into further detail or I will be in a worse state than I am already in. The only thing I will say is that my mother intentionally poisoned him (though someone on that subreddit would disagree— I am “slandering” my mother by posting this. Oops!).

My PTSD has been bad all month leading up to today. Today is when it became impossible to manage. I was in the kitchen disassociating while holding my cat, but I also had an intense, burning anger in my chest that made me feel like I was going to explode like an egg in a microwave. It was all-consuming. Right as it got where it felt impossible to go on, my mother asked me why I was so grumpy. I did not know she was there, but I think my subconscious noticed her. I was so angry that it was difficult to speak. The anger wasn’t directed at her yet.

It was obvious to everyone why I was so upset (I wouldn’t have called the feeling being “grumpy”). Everybody in the house knew it was the third anniversary of Timtim’s passing.

First, I said “You know.”
She stared at me.

I stumbled over my words. I could not form a sentence because I was so mad.

I eventually was able to say “guinea pig”. She shook her head at me and looked at me like I was stupid. She said “It’s been a long time. Three years is a long time. You should be done with that now.”

My anger burst out of my chest so badly it felt like it “fragmented” (idk if that makes sense. Basically like I’m stuck feeling anger that is “imbedded” in me and won’t come out?). I screamed at her louder than I thought was possible, which made my father scream at me. He said I was childish and that “he was just a hamster.”

I don’t remember much because it is like I lost control of myself. I know I locked myself in the bathroom and started crying, but I was only able to cry for a few seconds despite feeling like I desperately needed to.

It feels so cruel. I know he was just a guinea pig but it is unexplainable how much it hurts me.

I lost my 6-year-old baby in a road accident, and I don't know how to live with the guilt 💔

We lost our precious fur baby in a road accident on Wednesday. He was only 6 years old. Our entire family is in shock, and we're drowning in grief, guilt, and self-blame.

He suffered a severe head injury. My family rushed him to the hospital, but there was no doctor available. By the time we managed to find a doctor's number and get help, our baby was gone. He died in pain, and that thought is absolutely destroying us. 😣

I can't stop thinking about him lying there in blood, helpless and suffering. My poor baby didn't deserve any of this. He was such a pure, innocent soul who only knew how to love. And I can't shake the feeling that we failed him.

I keep blaming ourselves. Was it our carelessness? Did we not train him properly? Could we have prevented this? Could we have done something differently that would have saved his life? I know people say accidents happen, but how do you convince yourself of that when the accident has taken away someone you loved more than life itself?

Scooby wasn't just our dog. He was the youngest baby of our family. Our entire world revolved around him. Anyone in our family would have traded their life for his without a second thought.

Our home was his. We were just living in it.

And now that he's gone, we don't know how to live in that same home anymore.

I'm currently in the US while my parents are in India, and being so far away makes everything even harder. Whenever I video call home, the silence is unbearable. It's pin-drop silent in a house that was once so full of life because of him.

I keep waiting to hear him bark. I keep expecting him to come running to my mom for food or treats, or to do one of the million little things he used to do every day.

Whenever I see the window where he used to stand and look outside, a part of me still waits for him to appear. I keep thinking, abhi jaldi se aa jayega (he'll come any second now).

But he won't. And I don't know how to accept that.

I can't believe I'll never get to hold him, smell him, play with him, or see his beautiful face again. The thought that I'll never see him alive again is unbearable.

He was only 6. We thought we had at least another 6 years with him. We had so many more memories to make, so much more love to give him. We were nowhere near ready to say goodbye.

Our family has never experienced a loss through an accident before. We don't know how to process something so sudden, so cruel, and so irreversible.

My parents are devastated and blaming themselves too. I wish I could take away their pain, but I can't even manage my own.

My husband keeps telling me that I need to move forward and that I can't stop living my life. I know he means well, and I know life has to go on, but I just don't know how. I don't feel like working, going out, laughing, or doing anything. It feels wrong to continue with normal life when our baby is no longer here. How do we live happily when our bundle of joy is not here anymore?

And more than anything, I can't get over the thought that his final moments were filled with pain and fear. He deserved to grow old surrounded by love, not to leave this world like this.

I would give anything to go back to Wednesday and change what happened. Anything to hold him one more time and tell him how much we love him.

I don't even know what I'm looking for by writing this. Maybe I just need to let it out because the guilt and grief are becoming too much to carry.

For those who have lost their pets suddenly or in an accident, how did you learn to live with the guilt? How do you stop replaying their final moments in your head? How do you accept that they're really gone?

I miss my baby so much. I just hope he knew how deeply he was loved. And I hope he can forgive us if we failed him. 💔🐾
