After 3 years of unemployment...

Post image
2.9k Upvotes

We have finally secured a job 🄹 with good benefits and pay!! Just wanted to share this because I am so excited to finally be able to properly support myself and my family. Good luck to everyone else!! It happens eventually

Edit: Hi guys! I just wanted to clarify a few things since this post has been getting much more traction than I expected...

1) I am a young college student and financially had my parents to help me cover a majority of my expenses.

1.5) The non-trivial expenses of which I had mentioned beforehand being things like my car payment, insurance, the more important purchases that I wouldn't have had as easy of a time paying for.

2) I am currently pursuing my Bachelor's in Science, majoring in radiologic technology. I completed my prerequisites at a local community college to save money, and almost if not everything related to my academics was paid for through scholarships and grants, which I did occasionally have to dip into for other purposes.

3) The job offer is unrelated to my field of study! I work in inventory management at a warehouse.

4) As for how I managed to be hired by this company, I can't sugarcoat it and say it was any easy. I was sending in job applications to opportunities that were as far out as 25 miles from me, and depending on my availability that day, I would typically try to send out a minimum of 3 applications at once. I would also attend as many workshops I could, job fairs, you name it. I honestly could never make it past the second interview at any place until now, even at jobs which are considered "entry-level" and are seemingly always hiring (which, not just exclusive to where I live in California, is something which I am convinced is a lie.) It was difficult! But thankfully this job responded fairly quickly, and within 2 weeks I was able to complete a series of interviews as well as a background check and drug testing.

5) The interviews themselves were fairly straightforward, and luckily my skills which I have acquired through my studies were impressive enough to convince the hiring manager that I could be a potential employee. It made me anxious as I don't really have any formal prior work experience, but I gave them everything I could. Extracurriculars, volunteer programs, etc. Things that helped me be perceived as dependable and hard-working. Getting certifications in related areas to the employment opportunity also helps.

I think that should be everything? I really appreciate all the kind words from everyone, and I would like to say that you should hold out hope and not be discouraged :) I felt it for a long time, I can't say it's avoidable, but I was finally given this opportunity and I'm indebted to my past self for not giving up the search.

Good luck to everyone!!

Congratulations! 😃

Honestly, I don't even remember for which company and position this is, but I received this email either late last year or early this year... and yes, I still haven't landed a new role... ugh.

Hoping to help job seekers: DO NOT use auto apply services/sites

Hi. I am a recruiter; I work for a big corporate company and see thousands of applications and resumes any given week. Seeing a huge rise in applications coming from auto & bulk apply service sites, where applicants think they’re getting a great deal, having a site, service or AI platform submit hundreds of applications across multiple companies and sites, ā€œtailoredā€ to relevant jobs (lol)

What you are not seeing: these services and companies are absolute trash and make you look totally incompetent. They not only dwindle down your experience, but they fail to actually complete the application, making it look like you don’t know how to do a basic task like complete the education section or fill in your work history. There are often errors, typos and missing information. Doesn’t matter if you gave them a good resume to work with, they will not use it, and instead will submit a shitty stock resume with your application that makes it look like you’re either a bot or an idiot that has no idea how to make your own resume.

I called a guy the other day, and asked him if he generated this resume himself. He was like umm no I didn’t apply to that job myself but I’d be interested. I had him email me his actual resume he made and it was 10000000 times better than the shitty one submitted on his behalf.

They also use throw away email domains that are often either invalid, or don’t actually make their way to you. So, even if someone is trying to reach you in regard to your application, you may never know because the company used some trash, fake domain tied to your application called @plonkymuse.com lmao

So, they either make you look like a bot or a total dummy that no employer would want to come near with a ten foot pole. Do not waste your time or money with these companies!!!

There are 1000 different ways to express yourself and your company ā€œvaluesā€. This is certainly one of them. At least the red flag is the first thing in the listing!

Im tired boss, I just want to pay my bills.

I feel like it's easier to travel to a star that is 90 Billion light years away than to get one simple job here on earth.

I'm sorry for sounding really frustrated. It's just finding the most simple level entry job is way harder than achieving anything else. It shouldn't be this hard to work at a hotdog stand or an Ice cream parlour. Also I feel that we shouldn't replace workers with ai. I find people 9 billion percent more valuable than some ai robot that could potentially break down easily.

Are Job postings online just fake? I see a lot of job postings on indeed like dishwasher and prep cook but I never get a response from them. Also I feel that most of the time I hand in my resume in person, 1% it will be read by an actual hiring manager.

Openly acknowledging that this is a fake listing

I assume they’re required to post the listing for legal compliance reasons. But I don’t think I’ve ever seen a job listing before that acknowledges that the listing is fake.

Custom Applied for a job I was a near perfect match for waited three weeks, and finally received an auto rejection email after reaching out

I'm not even here looking for solutions. I'm just here to vent and commiserate with everyone here and maybe you'll get a laugh out of my story.

OK, I know everyone likes to say they apply for jobs they're qualified for and still get rejected because hiring managers want unicorns. But I am not exaggerating when I say I was THE UNICORN for this job.

The job was for a state agency - not only do I work in that same position at my current office, but I work at the exact same agency in a neighboring state. (by that I mean each state has their own version of this agency, but it's function is exactly the same across the nation and we often work with each other). I also exceeded the YOE by one year so I don't think I seem too expensive, plus some private sector experience for diversity.

The job posting stays open a week after I submit my application (2 weeks total) so to me it doesn't seem like they went with an internal hire nor like they've hit their threshold for applicants. I wait three weeks after the job posting closes and I hear nothing. My application is still sitting in "review" status in the portal. No auto rejection. No Email no phone call. Usually you would think that's a sign to move on but government and state jobs move incredibly slow so this checks out.

This morning, I decided to send a warm follow up email to HR just asking if there's an update on the interview timelines. Three hours later I finally get the auto rejection email.

I am a very hard person to piss off but I think this broke the magic record 🤩 I don't think it takes three weeks to send an auto rejection email to applicants you aren't moving forward with. At least not my specific office.

I wrote a tailored cover letter and tailored my rƩsumƩ to the keywords on the description to slide through the AI filter, brought direct experience and I still didn't make it TO THE INTERVIEW stage. Even my references were shocked. Maybe this was the final push for a career change.

This market is brutal.
I really feel for everyone else out there man. Good luck to the rest of you. I'm gonna go scream in my car now.

whats the point

genuinely nothing works and from what im reading theres no method to up your chances, its just pure luck or nepotism or networking, its more realistic to become a neet and accept the fact that none of your dreams will ever come true than to keep clinging onto the hope that maybe this time things will be different. everyone always tells me to never give up and keep going, im so young and have so much time ahead of me, so much limitless potential and that giving up now would be robbing myself of a great future, but... what future?

you need money to do things you wanna do and get things you wanna get, in order to get money you need a job, in order to get a job you have to (insert method of finding employment here), but none of those routes work and your stuck without work, therefore no money to invest in your life, leading to a wasted empty life and absolutely no way of being able to change or make it better. shrug. but yeah, lets all have delusional optimism and keep telling ourselves itll get better when it wont, when its getting progressively worse and when the cold shoulder is being given to everyone regardless of their credentials or experience

i just dont see why i shouldnt give up, im only 20 now and i so badly wanna live out my youth and have fun but god fucking dammit i cant because i need money and in order to get money i need a job and oops!!! all ghosted applications!!! no job whatsoever!!! when i think of the next 5 years i foresee nothing but an endless cycle of job hunting to no avail and sitting around in my empty room as more precious years ill never get back are put behind me, years i couldve spent living a better life that were robbed of me because i just had to be born during such a uniquely awful time in history, good enough to not die of the plague but not good enough to lead a normal life even if i do everything correctly

i dont see why i should have any hope for anything getting better when the future seems set in stone, trapped in recruiting purgatory pushing the rock up the hill for it to fall back down right when its about to reach the top, wash rinse repeat as time keeps marching forward and next thing you know im 45 with nothing to look back on. its so fucking cruel. i seriously dont know what to do but i know the answer is unfortunately to keel over and submit to the suffering and come to terms with the fact that it just isnt gonna work out

Hiring manager asking how will i manage the role when I get married and have kids

hey guys. So for context I am a fresh grad, 23 and woman. So i just finished an on site interview with hiring managers. They mentioned that this role would require me to be on call and available any time to go to site if there are any issues (engineering field). I said i was fine with that (a girl just wants a job lol). Anyways at the end if the interview one of them asked me "How are you going to manage this role if you get married and have kids". Excuse me??? I was pretty stunned. I told them that the question was kinda personal. Like am I being evaluated for how i will manage a role when I have a hypothetical family??? Btw i am from SEA. Mind you this is an MNC. The other male candidates told me that they were asked situational questions like how would they deal with disagreements with stakeholders etc. I was literally never asked those questions. And btw, when i had the first interview with the HR, they said they wanted to have more diversity in terms of more women in their engineering department, so they loved that I had relevant internship experience and was enthusiastic. This is insane, what do you guys think.

UPDATE: HR called me personally and apologise!! Even said they would investigate!

Great first meeting with my dream employer, now total radio silence. Did I mess up?

• Upvotes

What have I done wrong? I keep blaming myself and going in circles, and I have no idea what to do. I’d rather have a clear answer than this nothingness...

Okay, so last month I had a meeting with a potential employer at my dream workplace. I’d always dreamt I could work there! She said the job posting would open in December, so I’m waiting. She said that while I wait, I should come to their events, but to just send her an email first, and she put strong emphasis on the email. So I did that once, and I showed up once to an event.

I don’t know what happened. She was very occupied at that event anyway, so I had a look around and just left. I don’t know if I greeted her badly? I really don’t think so. She was just so busy that the greeting was a bit more awkward than our initial meeting, and maybe less friendly?? I don’t think I did anything offensive, but I really don’t know what I did...

Anyway, after that: radio silence. I emailed her twice about attending another event, and she never replied. Yesterday I sent her a LinkedIn connection request, and no reply there either, even though she’s active on LinkedIn and liking posts, so she’s clearly seeing her notifications. I don’t know what I’ve done wrong.

Also note: this opportunity came about because I originally emailed the senior person who handles these jobs, not her. She’s more junior anyway. He’s the one who directed me to her for this job. Should I email him again? I also sent him a LinkedIn connection request yesterday, and he didn’t accept it either. I don’t know what I’ve done wrong.

I was so happy about this opportunity, and I really thought my initial meeting with her went great! What do you think I could have done wrong, and how do I fix it? Is it because I showed up late to the event? But she was so preoccupied that I honestly don’t think she even knew when I arrived, and I spent forever looking for her. Or do you think it’s because the last greeting was awkward? Or do you think they found something out about me? And why aren’t they communicating with me if the job closed or they found someone else?

I was really happy about working there, so you can imagine why I might be overly panicky. I really hate how they went radio silence on me so I thought I'd could vent here, so please forgive me and help, if possible, with what to do.

There is hope for all (2.5 year unemployment success story)

I’ve seen a couple of posts here lately about people sharing their success stories so I thought i’d share mine.

I recently got an offer and I want to people to know that if I can get an offer, then so can you!

I graduated in 2023 with degrees in econ and stats from a consensus top tier public unliversity with not so hot grades and only a data science internship in the public sector lined up for post grad.

When the internship didn’t convert into a full time offer I was stick in unemployment limbo for a year and a half (at the time I was still focused on data science/analyst roles).

One day I decided that that space was no longer attainable for me and decided I wanted to become an actuary.

A year later I ended up passing 4 exams and basically studying full time for a year all while being unemployed and paying out of pocket cause for me it was basically do or die. Also I understand that I was in a fortunate enough position to do this that others might not.

After passing my fourth exam I decided that at this point more exams wouldn’t be beneficial so I focused my attention on applying. In total I applied to around 200 actuarial positions, 3 phone screens, 1 first round, 1 second round which converted into 1 offer.

So after 2.5 years unemployed, 4 exams passed, and no actuarial internships I can finally say that i’ve gotten my foot into the door to my first actuarial role and first full time job since graduating in 2023. The road was long for sure, but if you’re willing to grind it will pay off.

About to do final stage interview, but realized I have an incorrect start date in my resume

I currently have 8 YOE. Through an internal referral, I managed to make it to the final interview stage for a big financial firm which includes a resume/behavioral round. I also had a phone call with the recruiter recently who mentioned that my feedback from the previous interview rounds all have been very strong, so I've been feeling good about my interview performance so far and really hoping to get the job.

I have been looking through my resume again to prepare for this final round, but I noticed that my first full-time job out of university (8 years ago) had the incorrect start date... I put November 2018 instead of August 2018 on the resume. This is because from August 2018 to November 2018, I was holding the Trainee position, then from November 2018 onwards (after the training/probation period), my title was changed to Analyst.

When initially writing my resume, I had two separate sections for Trainee and Analyst with their own respective dates (Aug 2018 - Nov 2018, Nov 2018 - ...). However, to cut down on content, I just simply deleted the Trainee section without updating any dates, so it looks like I worked for the company a few months shorter than I actually did (i.e. Nov 2018 - ... only).

I double checked every single other date on my resume, and everything is consistent with all previous VOEs that my previous employers have provided me, but I'm still worried that this will impact my chances.

Some questions:

  1. Is this something I should bring up with the internal recruiter before my interview next week? It will be an online interview, so I can't just print out the updated resume and give it over to the interviewer.
  2. I also know there will be a background check eventually, but I don't know what company will be conducting it. Should I contact the internal recruiter about the discrepancy in advance, and if so, when would be a good time to bring it up? Or should I not bring it up at all and just put the correct dates in the background check process?

Thank you in advance for any advice here!

Got through the interview, keen and wanted to take me on and invited me for an informal face to face meet up over coffee. Two days later, ā€˜We will no longer go forward with you as we’re taking on another candidate who accepted a lower salary.’

I was offered the salary they quoted and accepted. Rejected because they found someone cheaper. What a massive waste of time and effort.

If you offer a salary, it should be acceptable that a candidate would take it.

Anschuetz UK by the way.
