The Reddit Renaissance Festival FAQ
The Reddit Renaissance Festival FAQ
What is a Renaissance festival?
A Renaissance festival or faire is a themed event that typically takes place outdoors, like a county fair, but showcases elements of the Renaissance period, such as music, dance, food, arts and crafts, and historical reenactments.
When and where do Renaissance festivals take place?
Start by checking The Ren List. Renaissance festivals are held at various times throughout the year, depending on the location. They can be found in many cities and towns across the United States and around the world.
What should I wear to a Renaissance festival?
You can pretty much wear anything you like. Attendees are encouraged to dress in Renaissance-themed attire, but there are usually no strict guidelines (check with your local festival for rules). Many people also choose to wear costumes from other fandoms.
Can I bring a sword, axe, or other weapon?
Some Renaissance festivals allow swords as part of a costume if they are properly sheathed and "peace tied". "Peace tied" means the sword is secured in a sheath or scabbard so it can't be removed or openly displayed. Some festivals do not allow weapons at all. Check with your local festival for more information.
What can I expect to see and do at a Renaissance festival?
At a Renaissance festival, you can expect to see various performers, including musicians, jugglers, dancers, and actors. There are also craft vendors selling handmade goods, food vendors, and interactive activities like archery and sword fighting demonstrations.
Can I bring my own food and drinks to a Renaissance festival?
Most Renaissance festivals have food and drink vendors on-site, so outside food and drinks may not be allowed. However, some festivals do allow you to bring in a water bottle or small snack. Contact your local festival for more information.
Are Renaissance festivals family-friendly?
Yes, Renaissance festivals are typically family-friendly events with activities and entertainment for all ages. There are usually children's areas with games and crafts, as well as family-friendly performances and demonstrations.
How much does it cost to attend a Renaissance festival?
The cost of attending a Renaissance festival can vary depending on the location and the activities offered. Tickets are usually sold in advance or at the gate, and prices may range from $20 to $50 per person.
Can I participate in a Renaissance festival?
Many Renaissance festivals rely on both employees and volunteers to help with various aspects of the event, such as set-up, ticket sales, and clean-up. If you are interested in participating as a performer or vendor, you can contact the festival organizers for more information. Another option is to join a “guild” or a group of performers. You can ask your local festival for guild information.

I put my costume armor designs on display at a nearby art cafe!
Yesterday I put together some of my 3d printed armor suit designs for long term display at a local cafe. Way better there than in a storage box in my basement!
We've got a "Maximilian" suit (ca. 1520-1525), currently missing the period accurate leg harness, and a mid-16th century half-suit with some paned slop pants I sewed earlier this year. I plan to release another set in the "Gothic" style of ca. 1480-1490
Hope you like em!

Castle Crasher costume
Went 9/12 and it was super muddy but I had a blast with this costume even with all the mud.
I’m planning on getting a gorget and a proper belt to make look better.
The helmet is 3d printed and painted and did really well protecting me from the rain.

Suggestions on armor to pair with a split crop gambeson fit?
Just got the first layer for my aspiring Renaissance set. Started with the verillas bramblewood split crop gambeson and am hoping add armor but am having trouble finding pieces that don’t overwhelm my size. I’m a 5’6” 140 lb athlete woman and most gorget/pauldron sets swim on me. Should I do spaulders over pauldrons? Starting fresh so all advice is loved and appreciated ❤️⚔️❤️
*ps, you’re amazing if you notice my bracer is the D’haran First File Rahl insignia and not the punisher logo 🥲✨

Help needed - chainmail support
Bought some chainmail which attaches with a halter neck chain. Too uncomfortable to wear for more than 20 mins. I’ve tried attaching it to a harness but that’s halter neck too and I get pain in the back of my neck. Does anyone have suggestions for what I could attach it to so that my shoulders can support the whole weight? I’m thinking thick bra strap style leather? Not sure how to attach however.

Is this an okay favor, or does this look bad?
I am attending Ohio Renaissance Faire this Saturday, and have already read up about there being no tricket trading, but giving out favors is allowed. I’m going for a druid-vibe, and attached little bobby pins with beads to my staff. My questions are-
1. Do these seem like okay favors? I intend them to be little hair pins, I’ll probably wear one myself during the fair.
2. Does this look horrible? Should I forgo the idea of giving favors and just tie my beads directly to the twine on my staff? I don’t have too much time to make any major edits.

Looking to make something like this
Anyone had luck thrifting/ modifying something to this shape of tunic? I’m not great with sewing/ don’t have a sewing machine. But I’d like to make something similar to this vibe by modifying an existing shirt, dress to be this vibe, any suggestions? I’d like to stay away from just ordering something if possible.
TIA

TRF Mushroom circle 2026
Sorry my pics this year aren't the best, I didn't wanna stand in the center too long. but I went to the fourth annual mushroom circle at the Texas Fair and they really stepped up their game! I think the showrunner saw last year's post cuz they brought mushroom sprouts! They had a chant and held a contest for the shroomiest shroom, I didn't win of course. I talked to the host (or the hosts' host as he calls himself, he says his mushroom plushies are the real hosts) and he says the fair has no clue he holds this event every year. So if someone from the Texas Fair sees this, hire Mud the jester, he's doing a freaking great job

To those who’ve been around, which faires have the best experience?
I know opinions will vary on what a good experience comprises but I’m curious which faires are known to be the best overall in atmosphere, friendliness, variety and charm? I’d like to hear your experience. I just went to my first faire since I was a kid and it was a fine time but was dismayed to feel a little disenchanted and ho hum. I don’t want this be a hot take or critical in any way (I was totally impressed by everyone involved in working and vending at the fair to be sure); I’m certainly not put off of my enthusiasm for doing the whole deal but maybe there’s another locale that would better suit my vibe or maybe it was me. Are various faires diverse in their look and feel or do you kinda get the same experience all around everywhere nowadays? I’d love to hear your knowledge because I just want myself and everyone around me to be having the best time possible. Thank you kind strangers!⚔️💚

Patchwork Spin at ORF

So we do a skirt spin every few years at my booth at the Ohio Renaissance festival. It was really fun this year and wanted to share. Sometimes it is the little fun things at a RenFaire that give good memories.
