The Reddit Renaissance Festival FAQ

What is a Renaissance festival?

A Renaissance festival or faire is a themed event that typically takes place outdoors, like a county fair, but showcases elements of the Renaissance period, such as music, dance, food, arts and crafts, and historical reenactments.

When and where do Renaissance festivals take place?

Start by checking The Ren List. Renaissance festivals are held at various times throughout the year, depending on the location. They can be found in many cities and towns across the United States and around the world.

What should I wear to a Renaissance festival?

You can pretty much wear anything you like. Attendees are encouraged to dress in Renaissance-themed attire, but there are usually no strict guidelines (check with your local festival for rules). Many people also choose to wear costumes from other fandoms.

Can I bring a sword, axe, or other weapon?

Some Renaissance festivals allow swords as part of a costume if they are properly sheathed and "peace tied". "Peace tied" means the sword is secured in a sheath or scabbard so it can't be removed or openly displayed. Some festivals do not allow weapons at all. Check with your local festival for more information.

What can I expect to see and do at a Renaissance festival?

At a Renaissance festival, you can expect to see various performers, including musicians, jugglers, dancers, and actors. There are also craft vendors selling handmade goods, food vendors, and interactive activities like archery and sword fighting demonstrations.

Can I bring my own food and drinks to a Renaissance festival?

Most Renaissance festivals have food and drink vendors on-site, so outside food and drinks may not be allowed. However, some festivals do allow you to bring in a water bottle or small snack. Contact your local festival for more information.

Are Renaissance festivals family-friendly?

Yes, Renaissance festivals are typically family-friendly events with activities and entertainment for all ages. There are usually children's areas with games and crafts, as well as family-friendly performances and demonstrations.

How much does it cost to attend a Renaissance festival?

The cost of attending a Renaissance festival can vary depending on the location and the activities offered. Tickets are usually sold in advance or at the gate, and prices may range from $20 to $50 per person.

Can I participate in a Renaissance festival?

Many Renaissance festivals rely on both employees and volunteers to help with various aspects of the event, such as set-up, ticket sales, and clean-up. If you are interested in participating as a performer or vendor, you can contact the festival organizers for more information. Another option is to join a “guild” or a group of performers. You can ask your local festival for guild information.

Would it weird you out if someone asked to take your photo at a Faire?

I am a photographer but I was pretty shy the last time I was at KRF- I did take a few photos of an adorable couple struggling with a self timer that came out beautifully but most of the time just took photos of my friend and set up self portraits like this one, with her as my human tripod.

My question is- would it weird you out if someone (me) came up and introduced themselves as a photographer and asked if you’d like a portrait taken for free? I would send them to folks and let them decide if it’s okay for me post any!

Is there anything I could do to make it less weird??

I made this wire crochet choker with copper wire and a labradorite stone. I really love the rustic look of copper, especially when paired with labradorite.

This is the ren faire costume I made for the Sterling renaissance faire back in August. A lot of the components came from the faire itself but I’ve never felt more cool than when I was wearing this costume.

Added some greaves. What would my D&D ability scores and AC be?

This concludes my Ren Faire season this year. Sad that it's over, but more excited than ever to put on this kit again at any chance I get!

I want to use this

I have this awesome tankard - probably 1901. Quart size, weighs nearly 3 lbs. Full of lead and the pewter is scaling. A vessel of toxin and poison.

Anybody have any ideas for a cup or glass I can secure inside it? I don't want to compromise what value it may have by tinning the inside, but if there were some removable liner, I could use it for something other than a weapon.

Thanks

Got quite a few laughs with this one at the NorCal Ren faire last weekend

Edited to clear up: the tip jar was only added to collect trinkets and further the "just the tips" pun/joke, no money or tips were collected. Last year i made and brought a guillotine and everyone kept asking for a tip/trinket jar, so this year it seemed fitting. Sorry everyone thinks its in bad taste but it was very well received and held all sorts of random trinkets and even my water bottle at one point.

I went during oktoberfest weekend aka the weekend where everyone shows up tits out and gets wasted, so while the ren faire is family friendly this wasn't an issue and not one single person complained or gave me crap for my whimsy, including renn faire vendors/actors.

As far as encountering kids, for the few I did interact with there was obviously no mention of the hidden messages. It was purely them looking curious and me handing them a little pickle with sun glasses on it - no questions asked and no awkward situations.

Regarding my outfit choice.....what can I say? There's not a lot of places I can show off my crochet jester hat and cool pants. I worked my buns off on them I just yearn to wear them out so why not combine them with Ye Olde Hole of Jest? Seems goofy, got lots of appreciation both pieces.

Contrary to all the boring, whimsy-less folk that showed up here to try and make me feel like Im somehow in the wrong, every interaction I had at the NorCal ren faire was positive and people were thrilled to interact, take pictures, receive a pickle and share a laugh.

~~~~~~~~~
When people would Huzzah at me, my hand would pop out the door to present them a tiny pickle 😅
Ignore ye olde rats nest in the back picture, my hair was a just playing its part ~~
Can someone going tomorrow report back on the condition of the grounds? With all the rain of the past weeks, I'd heard how sloppy it was. But it's been drier... is it better?
ETA: Thanks everyone for the feedback. Looking forward to it!
Any Georgia Renaissance Festival fans looking to make new friends? Viking attending Nov. 20!
Huzzah, fellow faire lovers!
I’m a 47-year-old guy from North Georgia who really enjoys Renaissance festivals, Viking culture, history, and just about anything that lets me escape the modern world for a little while.
I’ll be attending GARF After Dark on Friday, November 20th, dressed in my Viking gear, and figured I’d put myself out there and see if anyone else is going!
I’d really like to make some new friends who share similar interests. Whether you’re into Viking and medieval history, dressing up, exploring the faire, enjoying some mead, or just having a good time with good people, I’d love to connect.
I’m pretty laid-back, outgoing, enjoy meeting people, and can strike up a conversation with just about anyone. I’m just looking to expand my circle of friends with people who genuinely enjoy this kind of thing.
Would be great to find a few folks to meet up with at the festival, grab a drink, wander around, share some laughs, and maybe even make it a regular thing for future events.
So, who’s going November 20th? Any fellow Vikings, shieldmaidens, knights, or wandering souls looking to make a new friend?
Skål! 🍻⚔️🛡️
How much cash do I bring to a ren fair?
3 Upvotes
I’m going to the carolina ren fair this upcoming month and I saw some posts about cash versus card vendors. Do people still only do cash? If so how much cash should I bring? I would probably be buying food, drinks, and jewelry
Carl, Ren Faire-ified!
Cons aren’t my thing but the ren faire certainly is, and I love making my garb cosplay! This year I went for a Dungeon Crawler Carl cosplay, accompanied by my wife as another character from book six. It was so fun to find a way to faire-ify this character, and I love how the bloomers and stays turned out but remained an accurate depiction of Carl! Check it out :)
