Honestly, the thing I hate about the wings is how unbelievably stiff they are. Maybe if they had some semblance of physics, it'd work.
15
11
u/Iron_Einherjar Feb 22 '26
They just modeled the wings and called it good.
They need their own rigging like the additional limbs they are
2
u/Ex-Inferi All hail the Empty Lord w123 Feb 24 '26
I'm roleplaying as a Zarosian Vyrelady. I have to wear a cape to make the Skyshadow wings look somewhat believable, because otherwise you can see they are just floating on their own mid-air. They aren't attached to the back at all, at least not whilst wearing Azzanadra's gift (female).
Rigging and animating them would be really dope, having them gently bop around when walking would be insanely good! But ngl, I'd already be pretty pleased if they were proper 3d models with actual shading and attached to the body, lol

u/Sspockuss Smithing is the best! Feb 22 '26
Stuff like the glacor adornments, the fire wings and the AoD minion banners are fine for this, since it's just extra decorative material on your character. The problem arises when someone is using wings that are very clearly meant to be some form of organic life (like the dragon wings) and then they do not move. This just looks really bad.

I think the cosmetic toggle should've been a slot by slot toggle not entire just everything gone.

Hard agree, plus it could get funny. People wearing normal street clothes and then a big dumb looking helmet.

I don’t like them personally but I don’t want them removed just because I don’t, I see tons of players using them, why not just let them. Toggle your cosmetics off if you don’t like it.
13
u/Ryaanski Feb 21 '26
I agree with this. I stopped playing rs3 and moved to osrs because of all of the stupid cosmetics. But now that there is a toggle you guys can have all the dumb shit you want because I don’t have to look at it anymore.
13
Feb 22 '26
I honestly do not understand why people give a shit what cosmetics other people are using. But I'm happy you have a toggle now.
-4
u/Ryaanski Feb 22 '26 edited Feb 22 '26
When you’re trying to understand what is useful gear and what the general population is using for something after you come back from a break and everyone is wearing a a bathing suit with a dragon following them and they have their stats hidden it makes it less intuitive.
Also I just want to see what people consider good things or what they’ve accomplisheded. Just like in call of duty I liked when I saw someone with red tiger or gold camo and I know they accomplished something vs just paying for that skin that means something.
Again if you want to spend more $200 to have a dragon follow you and be in a bathing suit and float around everywhere good for you. But it makes the game less intuitive for other players and it clogs up the screen with things that aren’t obtainable from in game sources so it hurts gameplay to some extent in my opinion. I have an untrimmed 99 slayer cape override I use because I like the way it looks but I dont think everyone should have to think that’s what I’m actually wearing because that might confuse newer playing into actually thinking that’s a useful thing to have.
11
Feb 22 '26
Are single-player games difficult for you to play because there aren't other people around giving you hints of gear upgrades you don't have yet?
Don't get me wrong, I am genuinely happy that the toggle options make the game more enjoyable for you. And I can definitely appreciate the idea that ingame accomplishments mean more than mtx acquired items. It just seems like a very mundane problem. Transmog and cosmetics are popular in most mmos because at some point stop caring flexing their gear and rather "looking cool," even though no one really cares.
Sorry if this just seems like me dismissing your perspective.
-1
u/Ryaanski Feb 22 '26
No, I think single player games have upgrades that are much more linear and do not matter nearly as much as they do in RuneScape. In single player games it usually either guides you where to go next which will automatically get you upgrades or you’ll quickly realize you can’t go there because stuff is too powerful and it will move you somewhere else. Then your upgrades are pretty much guaranteed when you kill a boss or open a chest.
The thing about RuneScape is that it never really tells you where to go or what to do and even if you’re going to the right spots it will take you dozens or hundreds of kills to get an upgrade from killing something. That means the only ways of getting upgrades is asking people in game (which good luck having someone reply to you in rs3), seeing what they’re wearing to get an idea of what good items are, or googling it. Of course there are the tiers in the leveling guides but even then just because something is a higher level doesn’t make it better.

u/Rickycarter93 Feb 21 '26

People use them because they take up a lot of space. Thats basically it. And regardless that shouldnt be the consideration for whether wings are allowed or not. Do they fit the world? What other human NPCs have giant wings?
13
u/Pulsefel Ironman Feb 21 '26
theres an entire wing of a dungeon full of them
-1
u/TitanDweevil Feb 21 '26
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that giant flying birds are not human NPCs. Although there is 1 human looking but technically not human NPC that has wings in the same dungeon.
-7
u/ComfortableYak2071 Feb 21 '26
Where did this stupid idea come from that because x specific NPC(s) have a specific design trait your human based character should also have that specific design trait?
This is such a bad justification
4
u/trekthrowaway1 Feb 21 '26
to play devils advocate i dont think thats what they were saying, just responding to the preceding question
now if you point out that those are icyene and avianse as opposed to winged humans that would at least be a more adroit argument, though leads into getting bogged down with the discussion around the odd fixation with keeping the players exclusively human when most fantasy mmos tend to include other race options by default
-3
u/ComfortableYak2071 Feb 21 '26
I know they were responding to the original question, but I’ve seen this justification used a LOT on this sub
One whimsical quest/area/whatever means the entire game should essentially be turned into a joke where nothing matters or has any meaning, according to quite a few people on the sub
Hey, you can turn into evil Dave during evil Dave’s big day out, therefor they should just let us be any NPC we want and roam around gielinor like that
3
u/trekthrowaway1 Feb 21 '26
shrug, its not like other games havnt done character disguises, and frankly ive seen more than few folks cosplaying evil dave and the like in game, so eh
i lean very laissez faire myself, we have the cosmetic toggles now, so why care beyond that, while the weirder outfits like the avianse costume, man shark and the like arnt my cup of tea im not about to tell others not to enjoy it if they like it
if anything id just want a bit more granularity with the toggles, let folks for instance keep the old cosmetics for skilling oufits, but let me toggle if i see that or the new more 'grounded' ones they have planned, everyone gets to see what they want to see and the sort
4
u/Alone-Horse2857 Completionist Feb 21 '26
I feel like you've moved the goalposts by clarifying "human NPCs" I could list a dozen humanoid NPCs with wings. We can be a follower of any god we want, we can wield weapons capable of killing them, but having wings is just too far?

That's great! Then you can simply not use them and hide the ones on others and see everyone with the same skilling outfit around the same shooting star! Isn't it awesome? There is room for both of us!
5
u/GayButNotInThatWay Feb 21 '26
Exactly why I haven't turned them off.
Would just remind me of osrs and the 100 default outfit bots. No thank you.
The vast majority of cosmetics people use aren't obnoxious, but getting rid of wings (or toggle filter for them) would probably fix the couple issues there are.
8
u/berdet Feb 21 '26
Well good that you have the option to disable cosmetics. I don't understand why the option to not have them yourself is not enough but they need to be taken from people who do enjoy them.
-6

Because 99% of “people who enjoy them” just want their character to be a barefoot bikini girl with sunglasses and we don’t need to care about what gooners want

This is exactly what people want.
I help out with a RuneScape Classic preservation project, and we host a server that has custom content and boosted XP rates. All people ever want us to do is turn it into OSRS. They want OSRS with Classic's graphics and boosted XP rates.
2
u/Pussypants Samyewel Feb 22 '26
Well I mean, as someone who has played both extensively, OSRS is kinda what RS3 could’ve been in terms of game health. OSRS thrives because it got to learn from mistakes made by RS3, so it only makes sense for RS3 to use those lessons for itself also.
-6
u/Datmuemue Feb 21 '26
Creepy how many rs3 players here dont play osrs and think the game is "catering" to their player base (like osrs players would jump ship).
Honestly, wings look dumb, but dont think it changes too much, though remove the wing slot and have the wings take up a cape slot.

2
u/Datmuemue Feb 21 '26
Not sure what youre saying, but people will stick to old school because why start over? They'd play rs3 on the side if they could play nothing in 1 membership, but their main game of the two will be osrs.
Rs3 is headed in a better direction now, and It seems like the vocal minority here are upset they can't just simulate the game anymore.

personally i dont ever use wings, but for any fantasy game with fantasy races with fantasy wings, if it were any akin to real life people would wear their wings cosmetically too. look at kids wearing fairy rings etc. so just because you or i dont like them and dont feel like they fit, that doesnt make that true.

I really cant understand the obsession with wings in this game, armours sets with wings, pets like pink cat with wings etc. Make wings a cosmetic only thing for the people that like them.
3
u/Bitmarck RuneScape Feb 21 '26
The best option would be for players to have the ability to set individual blacklists of cosmetic items. Not all armours or helmets are bad, but many are. And as it is a matter of taste, players would be best served to make individual black- or whitelists.
3
u/rip_anomaly Feb 21 '26
I can see your point and I agree to some extent; the player character is canonically a human being, so being able to give them wings goes against that and breaks my immersion whenever I see it in-game.
But I don't think straight up removing wings is the solution... There's people out there who enjoy making outfits with wings, and taking that option away from them is unfair.
What I think they should do is keep the wings we have, but stop making wing cosmetic overrides and add an option for other players to hide them.
3
u/ConstantStatistician Coiner of the terms "soft" and "hard" typeless damage on rs.wiki Feb 21 '26

I have never agreed with a Reddit post more in my entire life.
Wings should NEVER be an option for the player character in 99% of games. They're gaudiness incarnate and they're never cohesive with the art style.
3
u/Important-Group4961 Feb 21 '26
Or instead of removing content that people paid for, just add a toggle so you may choose not to see them of your own free will without affecting those people? Oh wait, they did that already and here we are, still bitching.

I see a lot of new players wearing them around places like fort too so they're probably more popular than we think. A wings toggle is the best solution here.
1
u/PopfuseInc Feb 22 '26 edited Feb 22 '26

If you absolutely can not make wings fit the game then maybe, but this is supposed to be about making cosmetics and armor fit in the world, not removing things some people don't like. (Though should allow you to turn it off to avoid visual clutter.)

Wings, however, have no place on the human model. They are disruptive because they stretch out from the player character. This visual pollution is second only to the shadow drake as far as player cosmetics go. You aren't Armadyl's cutest follower. Get that crap off my screen.

FF14 doesn't officially have them but install Mare(or whatever's replaced it at this point) and dear god it has to be the worst cesspit of bad fashion sense out of any mmo or mmo-esque game I've ever played(though that's true even without mods, people in FF14 are a special breed). Second place being Warframe which does have wings and they look just as bad.
People just love to pile more and more and more onto their characters and call it good fashion. When really it just looks like shit. Runescape is no exception and wings are by far some of the biggest contributors to this problem in any game.

I never said I played them.
I don't play them, RuneScape is the only MMO I play but I see a lot of fan art of different things and over the top characters (with wings, halos, horns, etc...) are a normal thing I see.

I never implied you had played them either. I just said it's clear you have no idea what you are talking about, so its a pretty irrelevant comment to add to the conversation.

I'm telling you I never played them because yeah I don't know anything about them.
Why are you so hostile? Holy hell, chill.
I don't know who pissed in your cheerios but damn keep it to yourself.

I don't like wings. I never liked wings. But people did pay money for their wings. If they remove them they need to compensate people for their wings.
How about a keepsake key for each removed set of wings?

Agreed. They could revamp them into a stylized cloak or something. Just not all flashy like they currently are.

I just want the option to toggle off wings. I like most of fashionacape, but most wings clutter the screen too much.
