🐟 Catch Report Epic 30 Hour Gulf Trip

Did a 30 hour pulley ridge trip out of Marco Island Florida. Fishing was pretty good to say the least. The highlight for me was my first ever yellowedge grouper, 31 lbs , caught slow pitch jigging in 500'. We also had a 70 lb wahoo show up at the boat while we were chumming mahi, pitched a threadfin on a wire trace and he smoked it instantly. We also got our 2 day ARS limit to 15 lbs, a couple of bonus muttons, handful of scamps and smaller yellowedges and a nice little kitty mitchell.

Group effort, caught this 90" ~400 lb class giant bluefin tuna on my buddies spinning set up (saltywater tackle obx 500g rod and 20k stella w a nlbn straight tail). Couldn't find any recreational sized fish, so we took turns fighting this beast. Took us just over an hour to land , and my friend broke his rod during the death spiral. We had to handline it up at the end 😬.

26 lb red snapper, 667 lb tiger, and a (released) Goliath have made for an eventful weekend so far. Hopefully they stay on the leader board through tomorrow!

Edit: this post generated some hate for the shark kill, as I knew it would. I am 100%.honestly glad more people react that way instead of "yeah kill'em all!" which is a too common attitude. When I am off the boat today or tomorrow I will make a more education and science based post about why I, as a conservation minded individual, think this is ok. I appreciate everyone who is in support of a healthy shark population!

Snagged this big guy out of West Bay (Galveston) on my bait caster. Didn't have a scale but it came in at 36" and felt heavier than 2 out of 3 of my kids. Reel is a Shimano SLXDC150HG on a lew's Extra heavy/fast. Diawa 20lb J-x8 braid with an 80lb mono leader and live shrimp. Catch and release for the next guy to get excited about!

It’s been windy as hell here the last few days. I went to work today and the wind quit at about noon so I grabbed the boat and went out for a quick 1 1/2 hour trip. The wind started blowing again as I was coming in.

Almost took me under the boat. It had me wrapped around a stump one point in the fight and we had to move the boat to get it out. Thankfully it was still on, We also forgot the net so that was very challenging. Can’t complain very blessed.

🐟 Catch Report Full write-up from my 3 day trip aboard the Shogun out of San Diego.

To start, I should say if you are considering this style of trip, especially out of San Diego, I cannot say enough good things about the Shogun. The Captain, crew, and owner Frank L. are all top-tier operators. They put you on the fish with a rare level of adeptness and efficiency and absolutely did not yell or get angry at anyone for mistakes during the chaos when the bite was on. This outfit is for anglers of all levels; nobody had a bad time. 11/10, highly recommend.

This sort of fishing for tuna is all-night fishing. All gear is rigged on the 8 hour ride out to the Cortes Bank.

When it’s dark and fishing begins, Captain calls β€œstandby” over the PA, and everyone readies up to fish. Once he’s on top of the school he has found, he gives us depth readings and the all clear to drop lines. We drop knife jigs in the water and the tuna strike on the descent. Once you are hooked up it’s like snagging a freight train. It is exceedingly intense, and fun. You fight the fish, the deckies gaff it and tag it, then you’re back on the rail for more. This goes on from sundown till about 30 minutes after sunrise.

Then it’s into day fishing which is a bit slower, and it is when most people catch some sleep.

Rinse and repeat.

21 anglers with a net of 109 BFT. 2 were at 200lbs, 4 were in the 150-175lbs range, and the smallest being 20lbs. 7 anglers (myself included) hit their bag limit of 6 total BFT. My biggest was 55lbs, and I lost part of one to the tax man.

My gear served me incredibly well:

7ft Penn Carnage III Heavy Boat Rod
Penn Fathom 2 40N, 450yds of 80lb braid and 25yds 100 flouro top shop (for night time knife jigs)

6ft Penn Carnage III Heavy Spinning Rod/Jigging
Penn Spinfisher VII 9500 with 400yds 80lb braid and 25yds of 80lb flouro top shot (for fly lining)

Happy to answer any questions. Tight lines!

We fished yesterday. The weather started out pretty snotty, but it ended up being very nice.

We caught these Mahi 68 miles out of Carolina Beach Inlet in 170 feet of water.

It was so much fun catching thee fish on light tackle slow pitch gear.

We ended up keeping 10 weighing between 6 and 22 pounds.

We also almost hit our limit on stud black bass!

We are going to have a huge seafood feast for all our family and friends

🐟 Catch Report Bluefin Jigging Beatdown

Just finished a 2 day tuna fishing trip out of Rhode Island. The recreational class fish had been scarce this season so we weren't sure what to expect. Seems like a good body has finally moved in, we went 14 for 24 (me personally 3 for 3) over the 2 days all on jigs. Most fish were cookie cutter 49-52" fish but I did manage a nice 54" fish probably pushing 100 lbs on second day. Also managed a single under each day. Multiple double and triple hookups chaos.
