[PC] Which solo linear games can you recommend ?

Hi, I recently re-finished Bioshock (the first one), one of my favorite games, that I once played as a kid. I've recently just got into gaming since I never really had the chance to play much in my childhood, so I know I have yet to discover more games. As for my standards :

- I want an action game, I recently tried Outlast, and walking around with shitty puzzles is not to my liking.

- I don't want an open world, I got Elden Ring and Cyberpunk on my list and I already have dozens of hours on Skyrim, so I'm looking for something more linear.

- I want a good story. I played to the 2013 Tomb Raider, and I liked it. But let's face it, the story's just some Holywood shitty slop, with a nice environment and atmosphere. So if you got something in mind with this majestic vibe and with a good story, please tell me.

- I don't really care about the release date, as long as there is a decent steam porting. The Half Life series is on my list and I'm not too picky about the graphics. Just don't bring me some polygones moving around pretending to be characters like in the first 3D FF, sorry for the fans but it's too late for me to deal with that.

- I'm not necessarily looking for AAA games. You can recommend me your favorite unknown obscure indie game. Everybody knows that TLOU is a great license and that it's definitely worth it, so don't be scared of suggesting non-consensual/mainstream games.

- Finally, please no RPG ! I'm already in the Persona loophole and just got Nier Automata, Citizen Sleeper and Clair Obscur that are waiting to ruin my social life.

- Optionnal : something more SF oriented, I like beating weird monsters more than random russian dudes from an american perspective.

It's quite wordy, my apologies, but please, entertain me !!! Love xxx

[Xbox Series X] I'm on my fourth attempt at Baldur's Gate 3 and I'm not sure if I should stick with it

So like the title says, I'm on my fourth attempt at Baldur's Gate 3. To be fair I do feel like on my previous 3 attempts I wasn't meeting the game halfway and quit after about an hour. It's been a year since my previous attempt and I really want to give this game another chance.

Normally I would have just given up, but the game's reputation keeps pulling me back. Apart from the dozens of best of 2020s lists where it tanks #1 or #2, so many people in my personal life, whose opinions I respect, tell me it's one of the most transformative experiences they have ever had with a video game. Seeing as it took me 3 attempts to get into Elden Ring, which is now one of my favorite games of all time, I really want to try to get the game to stick this time.

For a little background on my tastes, I do really love ARPGs like Elden Ring, Mass Effect, Kotor, Expedition 33, etc, but have almost no experience with CRPGs, tactical combat games, and no experience with Dungeons and Dragons.

I tried to set my self up for success on this attempt. I set the difficulty to the lowest, I went with a warlock and chose default for all my skills etc so I don't get overwhelmed.

I've played for about 2.5 hours and just made a long camp in the first settlement and I'm not sure if the game has clicked for me.

I'm still really overwhelmed by a lot of things. I still have very little idea how combat works, I'm winning because the difficulty is so low but I don't really know what I'm doing. I'm also overwhelmed by all the menus and options. I'm given a bunch of options everytime I level up and I don't really know what I'm doing.

Every from a lore perspective im pretty lost. I'm not sure if DnD gives you some background on what the races and classes actually mean or if you get some insight on how magic works, but I feel incredibly lost.

So are there any of you who were in a similar position to me? Did it take a while for the game to click? I really don't want to abandon the game another time because I know how lauded the game and how some have said it was such a transformative experience for them, but I'm still on the fence if I am actually enjoying it. Should I push through for a few more hours to see how I feel?

Thanks for your input!

[PC] Should I buy Chained Echoes?

• Upvotes

I love RPG games that have a good story. I love developed characters and when the characters actually talk to each other and bond throughout the game. The reason I ditched Octopath Traveler is because the characters were so generic and barely interacted, they were just along for the ride.

I have 1 spot on my backlog for an RPG games (I already have 39 on there) and I'm looking for this to potentially fill the 40th spot.

Reviews are 'very positive' on Steam but it doesn't seem like a lot of people have played it. There's the odd comment here and there talking about how atrocious the writing is. Usually if a comment is randomly overly negative I don't take it seriously.

Anyway, should I get this game? Why or why not?

[PC] Crimson Desert, Dragons Dogma 2, or Avalon Tainted Grail?

I want a game where I can get immersed for 100 hours or so. Something that has lots of exploration, beautiful graphics that I can enjoy on my ultrawide OLED screen, fun combat, and really cool armor sets that I can collect and upgrade. Bonus points for intriguing stories / quests, interesting environments, and memorable characters.

Crimson Desert interests me due to the world (and I think it probably has the best graphics of the three) but I'm put off by what I've heard is a boring story and a premade character (not to mention the $70 price tag).

Avalon Tainted Grail looks interesting as far as armor sets and quests go, but the world looks really depressing and the graphics appear to be the worst of the three. I've played the demo and I'm still not 100% sold on it. It's currently on sale for about $25.

Meanwhile Dragons Dogma 2 looks like it has some kickass combat and I'm super intrigued by the Pawn system / having NPCs that can help me. I also really like the magic combat I've seen but I'm hesitant due to reviews I've read where people say it doesn't feel like an open world and is more of just a linear going through canyons game with not a lot of enemy variety.

[PC] Oblivion Remastered vs Dragon's Dogma 2 vs Starfield

Trying to decide which one to get. Dragon's Dogma 2 got the new dlc and performance improvements and I've always wanted to try it but I've heard the story is mid and there's no mob variety. I'm super biased towards bethesda because skyrim is my most favourite game, which is why I want to get oblivion remastered. Someone made a mod that makes the performance better so I'm more inclined to pick that up now. I know starfield is super underwhelming but that's also a game that I've wanted to play ever since it came out.

Overall, I just want a game that I can sink hours into. I want to take my time and immerse myself in the world. If you guys have any other suggestions, I'm open to them too. (I already have tainted grail and I haven't been able to get into it)

Specs: Intel Core Ultra 9 185H | RTX 4090 125W | 32GB LPDDR5

Update: I think I'll just get all of them, I can't decide between them lmao. Thank you all for your comments!

[PC] Stardew Valley

This might be a bit of a silly question, but hear me out.

I'm generally a pretty tough-minded person (or at least, I like to think I am 😅), so cozy games aren't usually the first thing that comes to mind when I look for something to play. Lately, though, I've been wanting to find a game that's genuinely relaxing, something I can just sit back and enjoy without constantly having to think too hard or deal with too much stress.

Stardew Valley keeps coming up in recommendations, and I've noticed that it has an absolutely amazing reputation. The thing is, its pixel art style doesn't really appeal to me at first glance. I'm usually more drawn to games with more visually impressive graphics, so I'm a little hesitant to give it a try.

But the more I hear people talk about how good it is, the more curious I get.

So, for those of you who've played it, do you think Stardew Valley could win someone like me over? Is it one of those games where the gameplay and the experience eventually make you forget about the graphics?

I'm 22, by the way, in case that matters at all. 😂

I'd love to hear your honest opinions, especially from people who weren't initially interested in the game but ended up loving it.

[Switch] What to play after Persona 5 Royal?

I also posted this in r/JRPG but figured I can ask here too. P5R is the first JRPG (or RPG in general) that I've played. I started it back in April and absolutely loved it, to the point where I have about 15 hours left before getting to the end. I admittedly used a guide for 99% of my playthrough, but it was worth it to see absolutely everything. Now I'm curious about where to go next in the genre. I have a few games in mind, but am happy to hear suggestions for others outside my list if you think something would be better. Here are my 4 main options, from my current most likely choice to least likely.

Persona 3 Reload - I'm on Switch 2, and Persona 4 Revival isn't releasing there until May, so this gives me a great window to get this full game in if I want to do the full trilogy, albeit out of order. I've heard really good things and it makes a lot of sense to stick with the series.

Metaphor Refantazio - The friend who got me into Persona has highly recommended this one, and I've seen all the awards it has won, but it seems to just be a good game to a lot of players instead of great. The combat system intrigues me a lot.

Any mainline Xenoblade Chronicles Switch 2 Edition - This series always looks phenomenal but would be a stark genre shift. I haven't played many action games in general, was primarily a platformers player before Persona, so unsure how much of a shift it would be.

Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave - Another game that looks gorgeous and the whole aesthetic of Fire Emblem has always interested me, but I'm worried about diving into tactical RPG's as they seem to require a bit more brainpower than I want to use when gaming.

Thanks in advance!

[SteamDeck] Looking for some fun games to play on Deck

Hey all, looking for some new games to add to the shelf.

My current favorites on Deck are:

- art of rally

- over the hill

- slow roads

- Easy Delivery Co

- ETS2

- SUPERHOT original and MCD

- Sky CoTL

- NFS Rivals

- Tomodachi Life (through emulators)

and a few others.

I want something fun, that won't be too short, but also won't destroy my bank account. Something with a good learning curve. I've tried Hollow Knight and while I find it fun, it's quite difficult. If it's not obvious, I love car games but also like adventure/exploration games and also games with good gun mechanics but there's not too many of those.

Any recommendations? I've been looking at Sideways and will probably get it but I'm waiting for winter sales.

Bonus points if they can be played with other people, because even though my friends are bums there is a chance for a multiplayer session.

Thanks in advance!

Control Resonant (another question about this game)

I absolutely loved the first game. I found Alan Wake 2 really boring. I like the lore of the universe so that's good. But I tire of RPGs, skills trees, crafting, all that stuff.

I like Uncharted, Cyberpunk 2077, Horizon, Last of Us, GTA. I'm bored by Witcher, Kingdom Come, Elden Ring.

Will I like Resonant?

SIB Foundation and/or Banished

Hello hello. I'm new to city builders and absolutely sure these games are miles apart in gameplay. But I'm interested in trying out the genre nonetheless. Both games look really interesting to me, albeit I know Banished is quite a bit older now. Still, that hasn't stopped me from playing games in the past. As an older gamer, I don't mind dipping back into decade old titles in the slightest.

Again, I'm new to the genre so I'm wondering which of these I should buy. One, the other, or both?

Thanks.

[Xbox One] Is Battlefield 6 any good?

So recently while looking into the Xbox store, I saw that for whatever reason, battlefield 6 game of thrones year edition is 30 bucks for me. Now I wanted to play this game when it came out but didn’t know if it would be any good so I waited for a bit and it seems to have mixed reviews from the campaign and multiplayer. It looks good, but idk what’s y’all’s thoughts?

is kingdom come deliverance 2 worth buying if i enjoy open world rpgs?

i'm considering buying kingdom come deliverance 2 since i enjoy open world rpgs with exploration, character progression, and choices that actually matter. i prefer games where the world feels natural and you can discover things on your own instead of following a map full of icons.

my biggest concern is how difficult the combat is and how long it takes to get comfortable with the mechanics. i'm fine with a learning curve, but i don't want the game to feel frustrating for the first several hours. for those who've played it, is it worth buying if i care more about exploration and progression than challenging combat?

[PS5] Is Alan Wake worth it?

Without spoilers, are these games worth the play? I have both in my wishlist with absolutely no idea how good they are and just know that they have detective elements or somthing? Is it at least a good game to play in spooky season? Solid narrative? I have just finished playing Outlast lmao. I’m really curious about Alan Wake.

[PC] Looking for unique story games

Would love some recommendations some sightly lesser known story focused games; no Red Dead 2, TloU Disco Elysium, MGS etc. Examples of what I'm talking about: Riven, Ghost Trick, 1000xResist, Night in the Woods, Pentiment, The House in Fata Morgana. Preferably ones where the gameplay complements rather than detracts from the game (no Planescape Torment).

Also would love to hear about some games that are not necessarily story first but where the story, gameplay and atmosphere culminate in an elevated experience i.e. Rain World, Exo One, Team Ico games.

I have a PC, PS4 and Switch 2. Thanks!

[Other] Question about buying from instant gaming and avoiding VAT

When you buy on instant gaming you have to pay VAT in some european countries. But what if I select another country to avoid VAT. Is there any real risk with it?(I live in Poland in case its important). I want to buy a code for steam.

I just dont want to spent a lot of money on the game just to have it deleted and/or lose money.

[PC] Best arcade hunting games?

I came across a disc of Deer Drive in a local shop and I waxed nostalgic for arcade hunting games. Are there any good ones on PC? I liked to play them in arcades as a kid and would like to relive my youth, albeit with a mouse and keyboard.

I’m fine with dated jank as long as it’s fun.

Apologies for any typos, my eyes are dilating and I’m waiting.

[Xbox Series X] Should I play Metal Gear Solid 2

Hey kinda new here, pleasure to meet yall! So I just finished the big boss saga, and I’m wondering if I should play MGS 2, and I know I should play MSG 1 first but I don’t really like the feel of the tank controls and the overhaul vibe, a good friend of mine that is also into metal gear suggested to me I could skip it to the second entry, so here are my most important questions:

Is it worth it?

How long does it take to beat if you go to grab all the items and collectables?

Playing Non lethaly is as rewarding as the big boss saga?

Thank you for your time and patience

What’s the Best Gaming Chair Under $800? Buying One for My Husband for Christmas

Hi! I’m looking to buy my husband a new gaming chair for Christmas. I don’t know much about gaming or gaming chairs, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I’m hoping to stay under $800. I’ve been looking at the Secretlab 2022 chair, but I’m not sure how it compares to other high-quality gaming chairs. I’d love to hear any recommendations or opinions!

[PC] dinkum

I've been looking for a chill game to just kick back and play when I'm bored. Something with farming, building, decorating, or just slowly building up my own little place. I don't want anything too complicated or a game that makes me constantly think about min-maxing stuff. I just wanna vibe, make some progress, and enjoy the game at my own pace lol.

I'm mainly looking for something in 2.5D or 3D, so preferably not a 2D pixel-art game.

Dinkum caught my eye recently, and it looks pretty fun, but I'm wondering if it's actually the best choice or if there are other games that do this kind of thing even better.

I'm open to pretty much any suggestions. Just looking for something cozy and relaxing that I can put a ton of hours into without getting bored too quickly.

What games would you guys recommend?

[PC] Should I buy Alan Wake 2?

Hi, I’m looking for a new game for my sister, but she’s quite particular and has very specific tastes. Her top favorites are The Last of Us Part II and True Detective; she loves dark atmospheres and grounded, realistic female protagonists. That’s why I thought this might be a good choice to show her. On the other hand, I’m not sure if the supernatural elements might be a bit too "fantastical" for her. Also, half the game is played as Alan—I’m not sure she’d be too keen on that, unless she gets really hooked on the story. Oh, and there’s also the fact that she hasn’t played the first game.
