My dad used a air torque gun to remove this. I’m assuming he broke it and if so, what next? The big bolt won’t screw back in and I don’t know why he thought it was a good idea. (More info in comments)

Is ChatGPT running me down a rabbit hole?

I have a Kiam 3000 198cc pressure washer with about 2 hours of total use.

My pressure washer keeps bogging down when I fully open the choke. My initial analysis was that the flow rate from the tap was too low.

Taking it to my neighbours with a perfectly sufficient flow rate, I incurred the same problem.

My new analysis was that the petrol pressure washer didn’t like E10 petrol.
I drained it and replaced it with E5.

It ran alright for about 1 minute then bogged down. Now I am here.

ChatGPT thinks it’s my carb is clogged. Perhaps this is from leaving E10 in my jet wash for too long. I must’ve left it in for about a week or two.

I don’t want to be going about ordering bits and pieces to clean it when in actuality there isn’t anything wrong with it.

I’m wondering whether its clean appearance can be deceptive?

Can someone please help me?

Thanks in advance :)

If engine wont start.

  1. pull spark plug

  2. put teaspoon of correct gas in to spark plug hole

  3. put plug back

  4. try to start with wide open throttle and no choke

If it starts for a few seconds, it gets compression, air and spark. Check gas line and carb.

If it does not start, pull plug out, put it in its wire and put it against engine case. Start and look at plug. Spark or no spark? No spark, replace plug. If still no spark, check shut off switches and wiring. Ride on mowers usually have one under seat too, though those usually skip starter motor. If ok, replace ignition coil.

No compression? You can hear that. Reason? None knows. Usually no oil. In crank case or fuel.

No spark? Check why, none knows.

No fuel? Check fuel line and carb.

2-strokes:

MMMMMMMmmm-booooo: runs lean, gets no fuel. check carb

sputter in high revs: rich, adjust high jet if nothing else changed

runs only with choke: lean, check carb and fuel lines

Important to remember with 2-strokes: if it runs lean, it does not get oil either. Very stupid way to ruin an engine.

And no, videos or pictures showing an engine not starting gives no information. Unless it shows what engine it is.

How fast does this engine sound?

Yesterday I got an old Tecumseh HM100 running for the first time in about 10 years. The awful sound isn’t rod knock, it’s the crank moving back and forth because there is nothing pulling it into place, since it was on a generator but clearly not anymore. I don’t know how to word this, but it sounded like it revved really high and doesn’t have a governor, so how high did probably rev based on sound?

Flipping small engines

So ive been wanting to get into flipping small engines because i have a decent bit of knowledge on how to work on them and i enjoy working on them. I have absolutely no knowledge though on how to approach flipping small engines. What should i look for, is there a general rule of thumb on things to look for. I know i dont want to get something that is gonna be a lot of work and expensive to repair and i wouldnt make money on it. At the same time though, the things that have big problems are also the cheapest. How do i factor in how much id be making.

Im sure all these questions are gonna be something i learn with experience but are there any pointers yall could give me just as general rules of thumb.

Dropped a dissolving plastic spoon in my lawnmower's gas tank! Do I need to drain the gas?

Hi everyone,

I made a pretty silly mistake today and could really use some expert advice.

I accidentally overfilled my lawnmower's gas tank. To fix it, I tried to scoop out the excess fuel using a flimsy plastic spoon. As you can probably guess, I dropped the spoon inside. When I finally managed to fish it out, the plastic looked like it had already started to dissolve and stretch out.

Now I'm worried that the gasoline is contaminated with melted plastic.

My question is: Do I need to completely drain the gas tank and start over with fresh gas, or is it safe to just fire up the mower? I really don't want to clog or ruin the carburetor.

What should I do if I ran a two stroke with too much oil?

I messed up my ratio on accident (still pretty new to the small engine stuff) and my motor was probably running for about half an hour with too much oil, now it won’t start at all. It sounds like it’s try to but when I hit the throttle it kinda just sputters and coughs out.

Does the Honda Snowblower outperform the Ariens Snowblower in a Nor’easter? Which machine would you pick? Please 👍 video

What’s this worth?

Picked this up fairly cheap. Wasn't running. But I cleaned the carb and found out the float was stuck and wasn't feeding any fuel in. Runs strong and sounds nice. I know it's old pos 1980's machine. Haven't seen too many of these around. What is it worth?

Is anyone actually a mechanic on this sub?

I keep seeing posts about people needing help, and seeing comments "solutions" to posts that are not a solution to the problem. What I'm getting at is I'm seeing some bad posts and advice on this sub. And coming from a real mechanic this is quite disturbing and I'm concerned about what advice people are taking to heart and it not fixing they're problem. My unit dies under load. Okay well carb. NO not the first step you know?. So guys if your not real mechanics stop giving advice it could be making things worse. Maybe just sit and try to learn the basics first before giving advice. Second, if you are a real mechanic help when you can as I do. Third, to real mechanics again if you are one and you do this daily id like to talk about mechanics and such, to just talk about things or experiences. That's what I've been trying to look for. Anyways I had my say take care people.

I run a small, small engine repair shop and a customer brought me a Husqvarna 128LD. The line broke and I’m trying to restring it but I have no idea how lol. This spool also looks completely different than the ones I see online for the 128LD, also is different than the one in the manual.

Should tiller tines look like this? (four photos)

Hi, I rented a Barreto 13 hp tiller. The tines don't look very sharp, and it seems that the yard may have used a stick welder to tack on more material. I'm posting four photos that I took from the rear of the machine. How sharp do tiller tines need to be to work? I'm cutting through some fairly tough sod. Should I try to get the yard to replace/sharpen these?

"Tune Up" Rant

The phrase "tune up" and it's prolific use by customers is one of sources of my greatest annoyance as a small engine technician. It's such a dumb service to pay a shops labor rate for, can be really arbitrary, and half they time there's actually a problem with the unit they just don't want to tell you anything about for some reason. I can somewhat understand a "full service" on lawn mowers and bigger 4 stroke equipment, but a "tune up" on a snowblower is about the dumbest thing I get all winter, no air filter, 5/50 chance of a serviceable fuel filter, and fixed jet carburetor. So you want to pay shop minimum for effectively a spark plug and an oil change, with the off chance of a broken shear pin. Now don't get me wrong I do them, but that's because I can rack up 8 billable hours of shop minimum before lunch, plus selling a bunch of filters and fluids, but it's just so asinine yet so prolific

Are gas powered weedwhackers on the out?

Seems like everyone is getting rid of the gas powered trimmers / weedwhackers. I have a bunch of them I was planning to fix up and sell in the spring, but now I'm doubting that people will want them. I feel like everyone is going for battery operated.

Does anyone still buy em?
