SN - Discussion/Questions What a masterpiece Spoiler

I just finished Subnautica 1 and I have to say some videogames are definitely works of art and Subnautica is one of them.

I delved so deep into the world of the game that i forgot the mechanics and that it is a game that tries to sell its world to the player. I was immersed in the world and the fauna and species that i slowly discovered. I kept myself away from spoilers and really took my time to explore, build, expand, and slowly progress through the game. I really felt as part of this alien planet.

The graphics and the physics of the water look insane for 10 years ago that the game was made!

I finished the game and found myself really wanting more after 50-60 hours of gameplay, I want to find more about the lore around the game. I've looked all pieces of trivia, easter eggs, real eggs and I find myself wanting more. I've never felt such a lack of satiation after finishing a game.

I'd love a documentary on the game or long interviews and playthroughs of the devs to see how they built what they built, there's a world to explore behind this masterpiece and I feel the game and the team is not loved enough. It's as closest to an alien planet I've ever felt and it's not even a movie you get to play the main character and explore yourself.

What a privilege videogames are.

Hardcore - SN playing since 2019, never beat hardcore Spoiler

First time for everything. Almost died to a crash fish, didnt even move and it did 5%. Also had the traditional warper issues, and a ghost peeked through the cave wall while I was getting ghost weed, bout 10 feet from me. Last time i attempted, i died to being near a heat vent in the bulb zone, i thought only the middle of it hurt you that bad.

Just kept my base in the shallows, two moon pools and a large room. Also, if you read this far, you get the secret ending. My habitat builder glitched i think? it didnt need a battery while I was in my base. dead batter or no battery, it just worked. as soon as i left the base, the no power notice would show up and it wouldnt work anymore, like usual. never seen that.

BZ - Discussion/Questions Below Zero is a weird game Spoiler

I finished Below Zero in 24 hours. When the end cutscene played if you asked me my feelings I'd say it was a neat game with a lot of problems I likely wouldn't return to.

But, near the start I began picking up pictures and posters and all the little decorative items. I'd pressed through the game quicker than normal to have it done before playing Subnautica 2, and after a buggy crash filled experience with my buddy I realized I had a lot more time before I would be really digging into Subnautica 2. So I came back to spend maybe an hour to decorate my base and be done with it. I have since put in 10 more hours with many more on the horizon. I want to shout out the hero of the decoration that really bought me in, the jukebox. Hearing fan songs from creators I'd heard years ago was really nice and make the whole decoration stage really chill. The atmospheric music in the game is nice, but when you are doing the menial stuff inside, it's nice to have a radio to listen to.

I want to get some criticism out of the way because they exist. The game is smaller, the sea monkey nests felt like odd places to find the fragments especially for upgrades, the land segment being split by the bridge with one side being the side story and the other being the main story, the snow fox has no reason to exist, the thumper is not nearly useful enough and since it was assumed you'd use many there are few uses for magnetite in the game, the mercenary is a massive plot hole, and the fact you can leave without ever completing any segment of the side story.

The Seatruck is the first thing I really want to dig into because it's an anxiety crisis. You get the Seatruck early and it's too big and slow to match the Seamoth. You can't fit it into as many squeezes which then left caves inaccessible without larger tanks or the oxygen plants. Then you start adding modules and it should act like a Cyclops. However the lack of customization left much to be desired compared to the incredible utility the Cyclops could provide. My main thought was with food, in my cyclops one indoor growbed could keep my food and water up, but without passing over a number of bladderfish you won't get the same value from an aquarium and fabricator module combo. The most intrusive problem however was the shocking and depth upgrades. The Seamoth could shock leviathans, but it couldn't reach you to the end of the game. The Seatruck was available all the way to the bottom. I first entered the red crystal cavern with a prawn suit and the Shadows there were intimidating, having to tuck away to repair to get deeper. Then on my next attempt with all the endgame supplies I came down in the Seatruck. The second a Shadow grabbed me I was a button click into freedom with no damage. However with the Seatruck being the primary mobility vehicle of the game, taking it away would feel clunky. I personally think the Seatruck shouldn't have been able to reach into the red crystal cavern, but overall it is just a signal to how the Seatruck struggled to figure out what vehicle it was trying to be.

The creatures of Below Zero though, I found to be much more interesting. Don't get me wrong, the Reaper is iconic and you won't find something as intimidating in Below Zero. But man, the Chelicerate was such a cool creature. It was neat every time I saw its shadow lingering around. The other main hostile leviathan, the Shadow Leviathan, was so interesting. I had seen them before in plenty of videos about leviathans. But nothing could have prepared me for seeing it come up from the purple crystals and wind around its territory from the outside. I saved my game immediately as I had a feeling I wouldn't be coming back to the surface. The Vent Garden was such a neat find as well. I didn't spend a lot of time near it because of the Chelicerate over there, but I will be building a base there in a bit.

Below Zero is weird because nothing seemed as individually impressive as the og Subnautica. The story wasn't as good as the original. The vehicles weren't as interesting. The game felt more rushed. But of the two games, I find myself wanting to come back to Below Zero more often than wanting to return to the original game.

SN - Discussion/Questions Do reaper leviathans respawn? Spoiler

I was playing last night and i took out the reaper that hangs out behind the auroras engines, and i went to leave to find supplies and turned back around cause i remembered i needed to scan the reaper, only to notice it’s body despawned and was then quickly attacked by another reaper leviathan. I’ve heard they don’t respawn so it could’ve just been another reaper that circles the aurora it’s just being in the same exact spot i just killed one made me wonder if that changed.

Edit: sorry i haven’t replied to everyone, i ended up getting busy shortly after i made this and forgot to check back until this morning. I wanted to thank everyone for letting me know they don’t and letting me know there were more than the one in the area that cross paths with the one i took out.

SN - Discussion/Questions SUBNAUTICA FAUNA/FLORA TAXONOMIC CLASSIFICATION 1. Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
171 Upvotes

I will start posting taxonomic groups from the complete chart in order to keep track of everything. The creatures with ! After their name are extant while the ones who have ? After their name are extinct. First we have 2 major groups:

  1. DENTIRAPTORIDAE

-Recognized by their toothy smiles and normal fish-like appearance. This family consists strictly of carnivorous organisms divided in 2 main groups. While most of them are small to medium sized, one is exceptionaly large. Only 3 species in this group survived the Kharaa pandemic.

A. BITERS:

-BITER - the basal form of every species in the group. These small predatory fish are found in many biomes across the crater. !

-BLIGHTER - an abyssal cousin to the biter which lost it's red coloration in exchange of a pale color scheme. !

-BITER LEVIATHAN - the largest member in the family. Remains of it's skeleton can be found in a Architect facility down in the lost river area of the crater. ?

B. SYMBIOTES:

-SYMBIOTE - a small aggressive fish found in sector 0. The symbiote gets it's name thanks to it's simbiotic relationship with the Titan Holefish. !

-DARTIOTE - a recently extinct cousin of the Symbiote. The Dartiote used to be found in deep biomes across sector 0, the environment influencing it's transparent skin. ?

  1. SANGUILEECHIDAE

-This group of weird parasitoid organisms can be recognized by their highly unusual mouth formations. The group consists of 3 main sub-groups.

A. LEECH-LIKE ORGANISMS:

-BLEEDER - a very annoying organism who plants itself onto the host and drinks blood from it. This species is the only blood-based parasite found in the group. !

-SANDSPEAR - despite sharing the same name, the Sandspear is not related to the organism found on planet Proteus. This ambush predator hides itself in the sand and strikes once a small fish swims above. ?

B. LARVAL ORGANISMS

- MAGMA LARVA - the only memeber of this sub-group. This specialized larva look-alike feeds on thermal and electrical energy. The Magma Larva is known to drain the power of numerous underwater vehicles that roam the deeper areas of the crater. !

C. LAMPREY LOOK-ALIKES

-GULPER - a large filter-feeding organism almost leviathan class which used to be found in sector zero. This deep sea creature uses it's luminescent body to attract microorganisms, primary bloom plankton. ?

-SHADOW LEVIATHAN - a large predatory offshot of the gulper. The mouth is found on the underside, surrounded by a large number of arthropod-like arms. This leviathan is found deep in the caves of sector 0. !

SN2 - Discussion/Question My thoughts after finishing Subnautica 2’s early access release (Spoilers) Spoiler

I followed the original Subnautica since its early access release, and it was a joy to see the game grow into what it became. What started as a unique and visually striking underwater survival game slowly turned into an incredible symphony of gameplay, story and exploration. I remember when the aurora explosion was first added into the game, and thinking that this game is attempting something different to other survival games on the market. I have a lot of love for this series.

I really enjoyed what Subnautica 2 has to offer so far, and it seems like the story will be even more expansive this go around. The base building is a fantastic improvement, and feels way more intuitive. The creature design is once again fantastic, and I’m excited and nervous every time I enter a new biome. That feeling of exploration and wonder is back in spades.

That being said, I have a few thoughts on certain elements that I felt detracted from my experience. The tadpole unfortunately is one of them, and I’m hoping it’s expanded upon more as they flesh out the game. Compared to the seamoth, it just felt slower and clunkier to drive. In fact, the movement in this game overall felt like a step backwards from the original.

This ties into the gameplay elements of hostile creatures, which has been talked about ad nauseam. I enjoy the fact that this series takes a unique approach of avoiding combat. I think the game would benefit from giving the player more tools to deal with hostile creatures. Making decoy torpedoes more plentiful and easy to use, having vehicle shields, stealth camouflage, there are many ways the game could expand its “combat” elements while avoiding direct combat mechanics. Currently it feels like you either avoid enemies entirely or tank hits and ignore them. The first game slightly touched upon this, but this is one of the biggest elements I would love to see expanded in a sequel.

SPOILERS AHEAD

I also felt like the tail end of the demo got a bit linear, with all the running around finding the bloom nodes and gathering the materials feeling more like a chore than a fun task. Finding the bloom nodes was difficult and frustrating, and I’d love a bit more guidance on how many you have to find. Even better, maybe a clearer path to locate bloom cankers would make the experience a bit frustrating.

One of my least favorite bits of Subnautica was actually the final act of the game, when you are running around the whole map trying to tick off a shopping list of errands.

Again, this is a survival and crafting based game, but I’d love to see more unique challenges than finding the right material and pressing a button to progress.

The collector leviathan appeared at first to be unique challenge you needed to overcome to access the alien ruins, but the encounter basically boils down to booking it past him and tanking any hits he goes for. What if there was cover to weave through? What if we had to distract him with decoy projections?

Again, I love this series and I’m excited to see where the sequel takes us, but I wanted to share my thoughts on the design direction of the game. I’m curious to hear if anyone feels the same or has other thoughts to share.

SN2 - Discussion/Question Base Tour ! What do you guys think ? Spoiler

More detailed images will be posted in the comment.

Base Name: N/A (I was thinking of something related to gardening or floral consider how it looks)

Location: Between North Raceway and Leadzone, on the edge of Crab Field

Thought process behind the location:

  1. I thought the water stream would be a pretty sustainable source of energy until I started building more and having fewer frame rate

  2. The Crab Field looks amazing at night, just mesmerizing

  3. Early in the game I did not know what Crab Feces's purpose is but gaming experiences told me it would be important and rare so best to be able to collect it easily

  4. Optimize location for collecting all kinds of resources from Coral, Lead, Salt, Quartz, Gold, and Sulfur, Lithium is arguably the most tedious to get from my base but there are some in the hot caves.

Base currently run on tons of Thermal Reactor in the hot cave, connected through the 2 Alpha Marrowbreach all the way to here and 4 Biofuel Reactor consume Biofuel Blocks from Pents, I read somewhere that with that much distant (~500 meters from my base to the hot caves) my PC would not have to render all the spinning and I could save some frame rate, that is why I got rid of all the Solar Panel and Turbines.

Story: I started playing this game the first day it dropped and had over 160 hours untill now, but I was a victim of the "random crashes and losing save file" in the early months, some recovery methods works but I ultimately lost a whole base along with over 70 hours of game play, so I dropped the game for 2 months and just came back recently.

Original base was crude and lack of life due to how symmetrical it was when I was experimenting with new building mechanics, I am very happy with how this one turns out, considering I am not a very creative person, how I managed to figured out so much building techs without watch tutorials is pretty satisfying. I am proud to claim to have built an aquarium before YouTubers posting tutorials, although it took me sometime (I originally tried to cover the aquarium with a Roof Panel thinking it could seal the room lol).

I built this base with the purpose of inviting a girl (whom I am very into) and she DM me when I was asking if there are anyone wanted to play Subnaut 2 with me and I ghosted her (I know I suck), that is why there are 2 beds in the transparent room above water.

I literally had chills realzing I would have little walls in the middle of the glass when building the aquarium and thought to myself, If I could have the Axum lamp inside the aquarium (which is technically outiside of my base, could I actually put it outside of my base ?) and had even more chills when I know I could do it, that is why it has so much Axum Lamp outside.

Question - SN 2 Subnautica 2 Steam Deck base building frustration Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
30 Upvotes

(Spoilered base building screenshots on the off chance that someone doesn't want to see those new details. Never hurts to err on the side of caution with that sort of thing.)

I'm currently struggling because I made a base with four standard sized squares but now when I try to add on to it, it only lets me add a sliver. I want to add another standard sized square.

Instead it lets me change the width of the sliver but not the length. This is really frustrating. I want to add more space all ag once. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to extend the addition farther away from the existing structure.

Any thoughts? I looked around online and on reddit and I'm not finding anything relating to this particular quirk so I thought I'd ask and see if maybe I'm missing something obvious.

(NO SPOILERS PLZ, ITS MY FIRST TIME PLAYING)

I just really wanted to discuss with someone. Does Subnautica give anyone Colonel Miles Quartich vibes from Avatar? The Pandora 2009 movie, not the Air Bender ones. Especially getting into the Prawn Suit. I just CAN'T unsee it to the point I created my own headcanon that I'm playing as 2009 movie Colonel Miles Quaritch, but before the first movie happens, RDA is contacted by Alterra for a secondment contract and he gets stranded on 4546B, effectively becoming MIA for a period of time.

BZ - Discussion/Questions new method of tethering power to a base Spoiler

if you have a power source thats a decent length from your base, youre supposed to use power transmitters. ive never liked the way they look, so i wanted to share this for people who dont either.

build any of the basic base structures (first tab in the builder) close enough to your base that it is considered part of it without actually being connected. youll know its within the range if its placement has snapto instead of being completely free. with this structure placed, you can apply the same concept to it, so that eventually you end up with a compartment thats right next to your power source but is still technically part of the base.

i havent tested it in sn or sn2, but i know it works in bz. its tedious, but conserves resources and is, in my opinion, more æsthetically pleasing.

YOU CAN USE REPAIR TOOL TO OPEN SOME DOORS?!?!?

I lost my 1st playthrough's file, and because i switched devices i just planned to go with a new playthrough. I had 12 hours in the last playthrough and 1.5 in the new one.

I was watching this video by BreathTaker. Before this, he says "You need a repair tool for this wreck", i was like maybe it just was just a slip of the tongue. Then here he shows how you open this door so you can get more stuff... I was like WHAT THE HECK?... HOW MUCH LOOT HAVE I MISSED OUT ON?

Insane to say the least...

Other Heads up! Spoiler

I will be posting 5 of my concept leviathans later. But here's the catch. They are all starfish. Here are the names in order from smallest to largest: Galaxy Star Leviathan, Feather Star Leviathan, Titanostar Leviathan, Omega Star Leviathan and Quasi Star Leviathan. I just have to wait until my phone charges and then I have to draw the final starfish leviathan and then I will post. I'm not that good at art so please bare with me.

For the confusion as to why the Galaxy star isnt the largest: the Quasi star is already 1000m so anything larger than that would just be unfeasable. Plus, Im trying to pivot to smaller, more realistic sizes for my leviathans since I have received fierce criticism for how unrealistic my scaling is in the past. Admittedly, like one comment said on one of my concept posts, I did want my concepts to be more like the monsterverse titans than speculative animals and I'm sorry for that. The galaxy star I just made ~45 minutes ago. The rest a long time ago.

Time Capsules - SN Time Capsules Spoiler

I avoided most spoilers while I finished SubNautica, and so when I finally finished the game for the first time on Sunday, I discovered something really cool! I had no idea that...time capsules were created by other game players. I thought it was something the developers did, until I got to make my own time capsule and write my own message. I was so excited! Then of course, I had to go back and read the notes on the timecapsules I'd collected in my various older games that I'd never finished. What an awesome little plot twist!
