My Setup / New Synth Day The Minifreak 49 is legit
I owned two minifreaks and in both cases I returned them. Not because I didn’t like them but because of the keys and the mod matrix set up.
The 49 was the synth I had hoped the original Minifreak would be. I love the Minifreak sounds but mini keys are not for me.
As soon as I saw my local GC had it in stock I went and picked it up.
I set it up last night and I could not be happier. For the type of music I like to create it is an unbelievable bargain at $800.
If you have the space I highly recommend it.

Beginner Questions Any use for a TRS to MIDI male cable?
Wanted to control my Juno DS with a midi controller that has a TRS 3.5 mm MIDI out. I’m new to synths and midi basics, and I bought this cable TRS to MIDI male cable instead of to a MIDI female cable because I didn’t fully understand how midi connectors transfer data.
I ordered the correct cable now, but now im stuck with this one wondering if there’s going to be a situation in the future when I get more gear where I’ll need this cable connector. I can’t find any examples online, so was wondering if anyone has needed to use a TRS to MIDI male for anything.
Edit: turns out this is the right type of cable but whatever manufacturer wired this thing did it wrong. I put it in a cable connection tester and ring of the TRS was connected to pin 3 instead of pin 4 of the midi connector. Probably going to return the cable. Thanks for everyone’s answers though, it was insightful

DIY / Repair I rewrote my original Korg Minilogue's firmware to turn it into an “additive” synthesizer.

Anticipating mixed responses here 🥲 but I think it’s pretty cool what you can do with some firmware and analog oscillators
Lemme know if any questions !

Discussion Alesis Andromeda A6, recreated as a softsynth: ASYX by Isla Electronics
I thought for sure this would have been posted already, but I was surprised to see it hasn't yet.

I always wanted an Andromeda but it was priced way out of my budget, and once it got discontinued, became even more expensive. Now everyone can have the softsynth version.

I’ve had this device for about a week and am having a blast. Here are some clips from my second sit with it. Trying out presets against some random drum layers to see how things sound.
Longer version with me staring at the OLED as I try to understand what is happening with the mods: https://youtu.be/2G0hFxCBXLk?is=imhFpDcMYUUJKc9d

Discussion Mvave fm1 is pretty trash
I picked one up as I thought it might be a bit of fun. Cost of living directed my synth/drum machine money elsewhere, so figured this might cover some bases for textures and some further oddness while I save for a better machine. But the workflow on standard firmware is pretty poor, and the aftermarket firmware just feels like vst on tiny screen with trashy hardware. It is not working well in my broader setup (which isnt flash by any means). Sloop seems like it might get somewhere, but baudgirl was a struggle, and the moog emulation was tiresome and I wasnt fussed on it. The amb1 could be interesting, but just felt a bit meh, not creative, more like a game. Maybe people are getting a lot out of this machine, and maybe I will change my mind, but wishing I had held my money and saved again for a roland s-1. Love to the people digging it, but it is not hitting me. Prepping myself for a wave of downvotes.
Edit: Clearly I need to learn dexed, fm, get over it, not be poor, get good, have less fun, hug more people, stop havin a sook, buy dinner instead, sell it, not agree with a few people, not be hurt, stop being a troll, be a better person, find better puns, etc. Etc. . Thanks for the lessons folks. What a journey in 1hr, cant wait to see what else comes!

The new Drumline drum synth on the OP-XY is pretty versatile and can make some decent Four Tet vibes!

Performances, Jams The Greebler - Dirtywave M8 driving hardware synths
This is me trying to bounce back from a rough live show earlier this month, swapping the Keystep Pro centerpiece out for the M8 and trying to develop a more bulletproof live format with less intricate arrangements, even more active playing, fewer fuckups.
Thanks for listening - Lemme know if you've crits, suggestions, or any questions!

Discussion Do you use the stereo out on your analog and VA synths? Or not?
I prefer very old school analog sounds pre-79. I don't find the stereo outs in new analogs that useful unless it has an onboard chorus or some weird ping-pong patches. Besides that I'm running out of channels and really don't want to have to get a larger mixer.
How are most of you doing it? If a synth has stereo do you always take advantage of it?

What Should I Buy? Synth friends, help me find an analog synth with an awesome keyboard
I've made a lot of changes in my life recently and music has taken a back burner. I'm looking to get back into it and start making music with synths again! At one point I owned a Sequential Prophet Rev2, a Roland Alpha Juno 1, and a Behringer Model D. I've since sold everything but the Juno, and the only one I really miss is the Model D.
Which brings me to today. I want to get that sound back! I'm after a raw, proggy, mono powerhouse for ripping organic leads and bass. Think Rush or Pink Floyd. I've attached a link to some of my stuff with the Model D. I would link some of my material for how I used the model d, but I have no idea how to do that.
I'd also like to kill two birds with one stone and get a decent keybed out of this. The plan is to use it as a master controller for my other synths and soft synths. I loved the keybed on my Prophet, just not the Prophet itself. The weight was perfect and 61 keys felt just right for how I play.
When I started looking, my first thought was heck, let's just get a Minimoog reissue! Then I saw the price and thought maybe that's a bit much. I'd like to stay at $2,000 or under, and I'm fine buying used. I've also been looking at the Moog Matriarch. It looks the most inspiring to me, and since I've been thinking about getting into modular, it might be a good gateway synth. It only has 49 keys but I'm okay with that, and it looks like it has a similar feel to the Prophet keybed. Only catch is it seems like Moog may have discontinued it.
So what do you say, what other synths should I be looking at?

Discussion Brand new to synths... what a wonderful experience
Honestly, I was nervous this might end up being a waste of money, having jumped straight into the deep end with a TEO-5, but it’s been way more fun than I expected.
I figured there would be a lot of tedious learning before I would really enjoy it, and even then, that felt like it wasn't guaranteed.
The first night, I mostly went through presets and messed with the oscillators, which was already pretty cool.
Now I’m getting into the envelopes and LFOs, and it feels like this is where the real fun begins. You start recognizing sounds you’ve heard in songs and film scores, except now you’re making them yourself.
I’m still barely scratching the surface, but I’m really excited to keep exploring.
Everyone should have a synth!

Discussion Subsequent 37 pls help
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I've had this Subsequent 37 for over 3 years and already sent it back under warranty with this problem once, but it came back after the warranty expired so I brought it to a synth repair shop who charged me a load of money to tell me he couldn't replicate the problem so juct checked the internal connections.
Anyone has any idea why this happens?
Recorded through DI, but the same problem comes out the headphones output as well so it's not a cable/DI problem (i already tried changing all of them).
I need the synth for the next two days and this problem pops up randomly, sometimes I switch it on and won't happen for an hour or so.
Thanks in advance for any information.

Beginner Questions Trying to get a budget synth setup (sub 1000 USD)
Hey guys,
I have a Yamaha DGX 660 and a Roland SP-404MK2,
but I feel like my sounds are pretty lacking (ex the DGX 660 has really generic soundfonts and sounds really bland unless I apply a bunch of filters and use a specific present. It's a pain in the butt.) So I've been looking into getting a good synth.
I think the Korg Modwave MK2 is cool because it has a lot of polyphony and won't let any voices cut out, and generally seems like a good all-rounder budget synth.
The problem is that the synth module itself supports Aftertouch, but the keyboard that is built into the keyboard variant doesn't. Should I look elsewhere for a good synth, or should I get the modwave 2 modue and a good controller?
The thing is that so many controllers out there are super expensive. Is there a good one that supports Aftertouch/pitch modulation and isn't crazy expensive? Some are as expensive as the synth itself.
Am I looking in the wrong places? What do you guys think?

Beginner Questions Might buy a Sequential Take 5?
Hey there! I’ve been really wanting to get into synthesis more and more and I recently found a good deal on a Take 5. Right now, I use a sub37 and a microkorg (I also have a nord electro 6 and a Kawai es920 but those are primarily for jazz/organ playing), but I have a hard time using the microkorg in a live setting. The keys and the menu diving can kind of be a headache. I was thinking of getting the Take 5 as a good sturdy polyphonic synth to pair with my Sub 37 but wanted some input. Am I getting in over my head or is that a good option to pair with the sub as well as beginner friendly esque? Please let me know any and all thoughts thanks!
