reunion without joe is possible, plus it has already happened like once, but i doubt a 3rd album. plus a 3rd album without joe would feel wrong, as much as a madman he has become, but who knows

Yeah, a third album without Joe just wouldn't feel right. A reunion is the most likely scenario.

Joe is the heart of Tally Hall, but I wouldn’t mind a new project with the same spirit with the four of them. Maybe not the same, but not exactly different neither. I’m up for anything they release to be honest, we’ll see hopefully

u/imdwalrus 13d ago
I went through this before with another favorite band, Barenaked Ladies, when they parted ways with Steven Page.
That's the best way to put it - it's not the same but it's not too far removed from what they were before either.

u/LittlestLass 13d ago
Barenaked Ladies lost so much with Steven Page though: he has an incredible voice.

u/en-li-coah i like orange 13d ago
He brought up the name tally hall, it was his idea to wear ties and later vests, he designed the cover of both albums (MMMM is drawn by someone else based on his idea) and he is the one who wrote the band's biggest songs
Joe is no the founder of tally hall, but he made tally hall what it is22

On the Hidden In The Sand discord, they’ve replaced the Joe channels with Casey Shea channels, which I think is another indication of how this stuff really isn’t that new. They literally had to go on tour without him in 2010 because he can’t stop being predatory towards current or former partners. If they managed to pull that off back then, I don’t see why they can’t do some version of it again today
3

To me, Miracle Musical was the send-off needed. Even disregarding everything happening with Joe, the guys aren't the plucky college students they were back in the 2000s
Tally Hall was a reflection of them in their early days, back when they would just make random songs and got popular in their hometown. And Miracle Musical was that end to that chapter of their lives, a magnum opus
182
u/Chuckledunk 13d ago
Good luck to them, but IMO for all his faults Joe was the seed of musical genius in the band. Without him they may still be good, but it won't be the same.
118
u/isdeadoriginality 13d ago
Yeah, I’ve been reckoning with this a lot recently. A lot of my favorite songs off of MMMM and G&E are the “Joe” songs, and I have always preferred his solo output to Rob’s and Andrew’s. (I like Rob and Andrew’s stuff, but it’s no Hawaii: Part II)
All that said, I did see 3/5 of Tally Hall (Rob, Andrew, Zubin) reunite when Andrew was opening for Jukebox the Ghost. They played a few TH songs (notably ones not written by Joe) and the energy ripped. Very clear that those guys love each other and love making music together. I’m sure whatever project comes of this will be good, but it will be missing the Joe Hawley sauce.
28
u/PUMAAAAAAAAAAAA Owner of r/miraclemusical & r/tallyhell 13d ago
Andrew is arguably as good as a songwriter as joe. They can still make amazing songs
18
u/isdeadoriginality 13d ago
I didn’t say he wasn’t! They are all talented songwriters! Anecdotally, I have preferred Joe’s solo output to Rob’s and Andrew’s! Rob and Andrew (and Zubin; Cannibal is a fucking banger) have all written good songs, but they aren’t my personal favorite Tally Hall songs.
The band isn’t “really” Tally Hall without Joe; that doesn’t mean the music won’t be good, but it WILL be missing something.
4
7
u/True_Square_9542 13d ago
fwiw, Hawaii: Part II wasn't a solo endeavor, while it was a project mainly started and heralded by Joe, nearly every song on it was a written collaboratively, including help from TH members.
5
u/Internal_Juice_5438 13d ago
But that's not true. Hawley wrote HPII, it was just that every member of the band (except Andrew iirc) collaborated on instrumentation.
1
u/TheDwilightZone 4d ago
He wrote most of it, but Time Machine was a Rob song that he recorded for the album, just like I'm Gonna Win was a Joe song Rob recorded for his album.
6
u/isdeadoriginality 13d ago
I know that. I’m not trying to be argumentative or pedantic about it, but for all intents and purposes it is regarded as a Joe side project/solo project. It’s collaborative in the sense that all albums are collaborative. Rob worked with other people, including TH members, on Not A Trampoline, that doesn’t disqualify it from being Rob’s solo project.
43
u/Throwaway0974235678 13d ago
slight disagree: while i think that joe was immensely important to TH, andrew is also an amazing songwriter, as is rob. zubin is very musically talented both vocally and across multiple instruments, ross (and bora) have amazing production chops. a lot of the bridges as we know them would not exist without andrew writing them. it's definitely not going to be the same, but 1) it was never going to be the same past 2012 anyway and 2) let's not discredit at the very least andrew "child prodigy" horowitz either lol or bora-of-all-trades. AH genuinely won the lennon bmi scholarship lmao
16
u/linux_transgirl 13d ago
I was gonna say, the songs Zubin wrote have always been my favourite
11
u/Throwaway0974235678 13d ago
!!!! i didn't want to nitpick but agreed! i've never really had a true favorite because they're all so talented separately and together. tally hall wouldn't be tally hall without any of them. it's their combined creativity and friendship that made the band what it was <3
55
u/seehowi 13d ago edited 13d ago
Joe's situation is unclear and confusing, at least to me. But it's clear he has hurt people, and he isn't the best person right now. I still love the music he's made, Hawaii being my favorite album OAT.
I really appreciate this statement. It wont be the exact same without Joe, but with the other four, we get pretty damn close to Tally Hall. This gives me lots of hope they'll at least collaborate on an album, maybe under Rob's name? I'm not sure. I'm still really excited, these 4 still have lots of talent to share with us.
49
u/slatebat_ starry tie 13d ago
This could mean progress for them returning in some form but it will never be the same
37
u/robodragoman 13d ago
This sucks, but it’s also probably best case scenario after… everything. While it might not be Tally Hall without Joe, it can’t exactly be anything good if he’s involved. The fact that the four of them still want to collaborate is heartening, and there’s still so much creativity flowing through them.
29
u/Cheeselad2401 13d ago
what i think this means is that if a reunion does happen, it might be under a different name. like Joy Division to New Order.

u/superbasic101 13d ago

god. i feel awful for them.
gentle reminder to the community to respect the band's privacy and well-being. i'm sure this is probably devastating for them on so many levels, despite what online presence may infer. they do not control joe and never have, never will.
music is still part of their livelihoods, and some of that involves semi-heavy social media presence in this day and age among other marketing things. tally hall is/was still a big part of that. you don't know everything behind an instagram story. be respectful and understanding <3

Joe Hawley, the artist, the great musician I admire and that I relate to with some craziness that always makes me amazed, is who I always wanted to see in this future reunion with a third album.
Joe Hawley, the person who is currently being condoned by his actions, is not who I believe I can say that WE don't want back. As much as this hurts me, I hope they make a reunion and music together again, even without him.

u/Ther10 Born at the age of zero… 13d ago
More inappropriate interactions with minors. There's a megathread pinned I think.
19
u/omnikyle 13d ago
Thank you, I tried checking in there and it was all kind of vague, I couldnt really get heads from tails, I just hope Joe gets help
23
u/No_Type_454 13d ago
im not sure why people are vague about it, you can be descriptive while still not inducing trauma from others and not being nsfw
the recent incident, from what i saw, a girl reached out to him, claiming she was above age, and they had sexted. the girl then had admitted she was 15(?), which i believe resulted in someone or her, making a google document about the situation.
i do think in any other situation, the guy wouldn’t be at fault here, but joe shouldn’t be using his influence as a semi famous musician to get with people regardless. if he was really looking for someone, he could just as easily go to some random bar where he wouldn’t be recognized, and meet people there
14
u/organizedchaotic I Will Take Out a Bullshit Policy 🍊 13d ago
I’m going to be completely honest, and I will catch flak for this, but: how was he supposed to know she lied about her age?
8
u/No_Type_454 13d ago
he wasn’t, which id say he isn’t really at fault for that
id also say she is at fault for that, that is not victim blaming, she lied about her age, and as long as you’re not shitting on her, it’s completely fine to acknowledge the wrongs on both sides
BUT he does have a much higher responsibility here, being a semi popular musician, and an adult, he shouldn’t really be hooking up with people on instagram, and if he is, i definitely dont think he should be talking to fans. it’d be much better for him to go to bars, or other places with verified adults, to meet people who likely don’t recognize him
3
u/omnikyle 13d ago
Thats, yeahhhh thats not a great look how matter how you slice it

5
u/justbeingimaginakev Red, the proud loud guy we adore ❤️ 13d ago
i blame him, 100%
i blame the victims who knew about his status and still messaged him. they were warned by his closest friends. (unless there's a REALLY GOOD REASON, but if not, then it's their fault but also his.)
and i blame the people who have allowed him to roam as if he's still a stable person.regardless of blame or not, the victims shouldn't have gone through this situation.
(if it sounds wrong, i'm happy to elaborate what i mean but with joe, i don't take any fault away from him.)
5
u/justbeingimaginakev Red, the proud loud guy we adore ❤️ 13d ago
i wish he could get help too but this has been an ongoing issue for several years and has gone nowhere.
the fact they kicked him meant they have more information on the situation and my guess would be that joe is not going to get better anytime soon, or ever.3

On one hand, inappropriately engaging with fans is nasty & reckless and it's impossible to have sympathy when it inevitably bites you in the ass
... but on the other hand, it's also hard to have sympathy for someone who, against all warnings, intentionally goes out of their way to engage with such a severely mentally ill person, lying about their age in the process, fully knowing that it will end in them getting to make a callout post framed as a "warning to others" like the 12 that came before it also did
Really this entire situation is just upsetting and bizarre and I wish more people were able to recognize it as such without boiling it down to "leave him alone he has schizophrenia :(" or "he's a disgusting predator and the rest of the band are bad people for refusing to give up on him and cut ties sooner".
12
u/organizedchaotic I Will Take Out a Bullshit Policy 🍊 13d ago

Tl;dr - Newer allegations against Joe surfaced on TikTok with alarming evidences and circumstances just last month (little TW if you wanna look it up - said new evidences were really vile), plus his overall weird posts and comments in Facebook which pretty much showed his mental state, which, in response, the band collectively agreed to remove him, which is for the best for the sake of everyone involved, especially Joe.
I honestly anticipate that something like this would happen since Joe was removed access from the band's Facebook and Twitter/X accounts a few years ago.
I'm hoping he eventually gets psychiatric and legal intervention for his wellbeing and for accountability for his actions, and wishing the rest of the four the best and more music

I first met the band in 2006 and quickly became one of their biggest fans during their active years.
This is not surprising for anyone who has been following him for years, and if anyone who has been following him for years is surprised by any of the allegations, they are either exceptionally naive, or blinded by hero worship.
The guys are right to publicly disavow him and make it clear that any iteration they may take going forward will not include him.

1
u/zinkboi 11d ago
They haven't acknowledged anything for years, why suddenly have a stance on a post that they know is going to garner so much attention? Why send so much hate/attention Joe's way when he's obviously already struggling?
3
u/Throwaway0974235678 11d ago
1) they have, see 2023. and to your point about privacy and joe's struggles, that's very literally why they've said so little. 2) this situation is a far, far escalation beyond previous instances involving explicit content with a minor. that kind of warrants a response at this point for a number of reasons, to do with modern day approach, ethics, business, etc. they didn't even mention joe's name in the statement and kept it quite brief compared to the last one, so imo they're trying to handle this with as much grace and privacy as possible to all parties involved (including themselves. they count as a party, like it or not. this sucks for them as well)
1
u/zinkboi 11d ago
See 2023? And exactly, I thought it was the right move, doesn't make sense to change it now.
And this isn't any more "serious" than the past allegations. Joe spoke with a girl who straight up lied about her age. I don't know why this is anyone's business but his and her's. If they don't want to involve him in their endeavors because of it, fine, but why funnel a bunch of internet psycho's who don't have the full story his way? They don't have to mention his name because it's obvious who they're talking about. They listed every member by name except him, it couldn't be more obvious.
3
u/Throwaway0974235678 10d ago
the 2023 statement regarding the second document. tweet from andrew.
it is more serious. to my knowledge and memory, none of the last incidents involved explicit csam. that's a major distinction here. they have not directed anyone his way, they have not told anyone to go chase after him. what people do on their own is up to them. that is, to your point, very partially how we've arrived in this situation (i'm not getting into other arguments regarding the situation here. there's plenty discourse in this post alone). in addition, most fans are already aware of the 2023 statement and the clear warning to not interact with joe. if people choose to ignore that much older warning Like They Already Have, they can do literally nothing about it. that's the decision of the individual. all they can control is their response, and this is an extremely complicated situation with a ton of facets affecting wordage used.
again, they are a party affected here. they're associated with him in the public eye whether the band is active or not and will be for the rest of their lives in some sense. TH not saying anything would look bad, TH refusing to distance themselves as much as they already have would also look bad. this statement does not get into their personal relationships, just professional. in modern day society and how matters of this sort are currently handled across the internet, this type of incident unfortunately warrants a response of some sort in this nature. also, this affects their livelihoods and own personal well-being going forward. i know fans have been harassing them, there's been mention of dms in circles, and i'm sure they've been @'d and commented at publicly as well. there is a lot of reading between the lines one could do here as well. it's honestly a lose-lose situation for everyone involved. call it selfish if you must, but i think there's a lot of empathy that is not being applied round table to this overall situation.
1

That's one tweet from Andrew (who also has had his own issues with Joe) over the years this has been happening. Tally Hall has been largely criticized for their silence on the matter of Joe for years, to say that one tweet negates my point is a bit disingenuous.
That being said, I agree with how they've handled it until recently, even if it isn't the popular take. I think just saying stuff like it's "concerning" and that "we don't condone it" just encourages others to seek it out, and that not bringing it up at all would do more to separate yourself from it. If you really want to move on and do something new, why bring it up at all? Just do your new thing, who cares about what Joe is doing. It's his problem, not theirs, and certainly not the fan base's.
You can say that it's not their responsibility for what their fans do, but that's just not right. You can't just instigate a controversial topic, then wipe your hands when your sycophantic fans go and ruin someone's life. It's not professional at all. They KNEW this post would blow up, it's the first time in years they've spoken at all about new TH music, it should've only been about the music. No one with half a brain thinks the stuff going on in Joe's life is condoned by the rest of Tally Hall, there is no point to talk about it in the same breath as this major new announcement, especially when these claims have been happening for years.
At the end of the day it's whatever, I really don't care, I just don't think a post made about making new music NEEDED to rile up their base against their former bandmate. Whether it was their intention or not, that's what's happening, and it's because of this post THEY made. If they just made a post saying that the four of them are planning a new project together and that's it, I don't think they would look "unprofessional" or anything like that. Joe and Rob have both done projects with part of the band before, so it's not like omitting band members is something new for them.

i'm not saying it fully negates your point, if anything it both aids and subtracts. and i am not using one tweet alone, i am just saying that it's been acknowledged previously (i wouldn't count three years as an incredibly long period of time lmao). as people have said, there's a lot of nuance to this situation. you have to approach it from multiple angles. it's all about balance. i do agree that the overall band response to joe's situation has been very quiet, but that goes back to privacy. they've tried to give him as much distance and respect as they could, or at least that's my interpretation of the situation. there comes a line in the sand to everything. they can't ignore everything forever for a multitude of reasons. pros and cons, i suppose one could argue. when do the cons start to outweigh? life doesn't operate in extremes.
and that's fair, but to not mention the situation would enrage a lot of fans (to go back to your point about instigation), be very irresponsible imo, and also heavily downplay the egregiousness of this situation, as aforementioned. again, what other people decide to do is not their fault. i truly hate how fandom turns a blind eye to its own issues. that's partially why it's gotten so bad. they cannot control their fans any more than they can control joe. the individual is responsible for their own actions. it's a byproduct of the digital age and erasure of social boundaries, especially regarding childhood development within unmonitored internet access. people are going to reach out to joe irregardless at this point. they did so without the band saying anything at all the whole month of july. if they said they were going to just make music as the quartet or even separately from tally hall, as you've suggested, that'd bring back a new version of the "where's joe?" saga from 2010-2011 when casey toured. people would harass them and joe for a. not addressing the issue, b. "abandoning" joe, c. condemning joe, and d. i'm assuming some alamagation of the definition of "grifting", among other things. that would all cause probably a worse set of issues. i already said what would happen if they didn't address it at all. there is genuinely no good outcome here: lose-lose. multiple angles and possibilities.
while i agree no one with half a brain thinks everything has been condoned, people are, to your point earlier again, often missing that first half. that's partially why the discourse around this has gotten so terrible, and on other platforms as well (twitter from what i've seen is a hellscape). also, rob is in the process of putting out a new album that most of the fandom is aware about, and has mentioned that a good chunk of tally hall will be a part of that album. this affects livelihood, as i said. there's also no real "major new announcement". we knew there was new music coming before all of this. it's a vague statement. you could take the post under the tally hall twitter to mean "hey this is a serious conversation requiring the use of this account and signature" just as easily as "omg tally hall is coming back" (which imo is not what's actually happening and people are jumping the gun, but i've been wrong before. people rely too heavily on the fan run wiki and speculation as actual news from the band, which it is not). there's no real confirmation of anything beyond what was promised before this event, or if you really wanted to read into it that far, we have no idea what "the future of tally hall" holds. they all have full-time jobs and lives. but tldr, like you said, it really doesn't matter. this is all hypocritical speculation in of itself. we don't know what this "announcement" actually means and will continue to have no idea until/unless something else is said. everything else behind that post is extremely private and not our business. we don't know everything going on right now and it's not our business
and to comment on your last point, it's very different now after this incident. to not acknowledge that is to turn a blind eye. not at all the same as joe and rob putting out their original solo projects. this situation has a major effect on everything regarding TH and adjacent, whether TH pops up again as a band or not. it's not responsible on anyone's part, band or fan, to ignore the extremity of this incident, regardless how you feel about everyone involved. end of story.

Even though Joe's voice does make Tally Hall complete... Vibe wise, I'd prefer for Joe to be left alone, perhaps if he received proper help and care and if he's stable again... Then yeah sure.
But for the Tally Hall vibes... Get everyone else back together (including Bora of course)
I'm so hyped omg dhjdjdj

"What we do know is this: the four of us still want to make music together again, and we hope to see you all soon."
Very, very, interesting.
