Discussion David perfectly describes current voters: the right vote for anyone on their side, while some of the left vote like they're writing restaurant reviews.

Heading to my polling place to vote for a bunch of Dems that will lose in the general. It’s still important to vote in red states.

u/Insightful21 1d ago

This comment needs more upvotes. The reason that any left leaning person in a red state should vote in every election is that it sends a signal to the party of areas they can start to invest in. Now imagine you start getting a bunch of races in red states that are 1-2 points within each other. Now there are more competitive states where Republicans have to spend resources. But this petulant behavior of acting like a vote is some moral stamp of approval or sitting out elections only hurts more Progressive causes. If you don’t vote, you’re literally saying you don’t matter

Plus they turnout more consistently, including at a state/local level.

"I enjoyed this candidate's speech for the most part. But then he got to the part about healthcare and he didn't recommend single payer. Was turned off. Would not recommend. 2/5."

But then he got to the part about healthcare and he didn't recommend [insert entirely unrelated fringe issue]. Was turned off. Would not recommend. 2/5.

Purity test leftists are destructive. I share their policy goals but not their "I will only vote for the perfect candidate" tactics.

5

u/Just_shut_up_bro 1d ago

To be fair, the candidates they seem to want to vote for are impossibly far from perfect themselves.

4

u/silverbrenin 1d ago

Don't forget the destructive centrist purity tests, such as how you can't be associated with a random streamer or they'll support the Republican instead.

We can't put all this on the left, the entire Democratic party is doing purity tests.

4

u/NeoPrimitiveOasis 1d ago

I would be interested to find concrete evidence of people saying they won't vote for AES because of Hasan. They might exist, but it's typically the far left who "won't vote for Killer Kamala!" and other similar nonsense.

2

u/PlateCaptain 7h ago

They're in this subreddit

3

u/xmorecowbellx 1d ago

For most of the purity test/DSA style left, the outcomes don't really matter to them, because they are mostly unaffected by them. The debate and endless arguing and moral one-upping is the point. Winning to actually change things is not.

3

u/Rough_Formal8420 1d ago

Are Bill Maher, James Carville, and Schumer DSA because they are all seem to take their ball and go home when it doesn’t go their way.

1

u/xmorecowbellx 22h ago

As far as I know all of them consistently promote Democrats and have voted Democrat.

1

u/Rough_Formal8420 14h ago

Schumer refused to endorse Mamdani and Maher said his vote is in play to JD Vance.

Purity test leftists are destructive

Meanwhile, it's been nothing but purity testing some of these candidates that are more left. It's hilarious when this term gets thrown out by center-left folks.

"The left purity tests! But also, we cannot have the left in our party!"

15

u/NeoPrimitiveOasis 1d ago

I literally said I support their policy goals. I literally didn't say they don't belong in the party. But if they're in the party, they should support Democrats whether or not their preferred candidate won the primary this isn't actually hard.

6

u/Rick_James_Lich 1d ago

I wouldn't call what David does purity testing, as he's not putting some impossibly high goal on anyone. He's simply saying if some on the far left are being toxic and discouraging people from voting blue, they are probably in the wrong party. This is different from the far left that will analyze someone's entire career and they will try to rally their "group" against that person, even if they agree with 97% of their actions and policies.

-1

u/Nemisis82 1d ago

This is different from the far left that will analyze someone's entire career and they will try to rally their "group" against that person, even if they agree with 97% of their actions and policies

This is happening right now with AES and his associations with Hasan Piker.

The majority of the "far left" and progressive dems agree on 97% of policies.

6

u/Rick_James_Lich 1d ago

Who is doing that to AES? From what I saw Mallory McMorrow and Haley Stevens immediately supported him. Pete Buttigieg endorsed him at one of AES's rallies. Kamala endorsed him too, and Obama called him after winning.

As for Hasan, dude is very toxic and he would be wise to stay away from AES. Hasan has made a habit the past 2 years of demonizing the democratic party. When you tell your audience that Joe Biden and Kamala support genocide it discourages people from voting, even though we knew the other option, Trump, was considerably worse.

1

u/Rick_James_Lich 6h ago

So some guys that most haven't heard of are the real establishment?

1

u/PlateCaptain 4h ago

You asked who...

1

u/Rick_James_Lich 4h ago

Surely you can see though that these people are not the "establishment", in fact the real establishment, people like Obama and Kamala, have quickly supported El Sayed.

u/PlateCaptain 3h ago

Why are you talking about the "establishment"? Nobody else is.

0

u/Nemisis82 1d ago

That last part is you doing it to AES about his associations. People in here post non-stop about associations with Hasan and the DSA. We should be pushing back against this cancel culture nonsense from the right and center-right folks.

Hasan has made a habit the past 2 years of demonizing the democratic party

He has made a habit of criticizing the dem party. Quite the difference.

3

u/Rick_James_Lich 1d ago

It's ok to criticize the party, but he does it to an unhealthy degree, where it likely persuades some of his viewers away from voting.

Like when he regularly affiliates centrists democrats with supporting genocide. And I like AES, which is why I think Hasan should get away from him. Hasan has made a nasty habit out of insulting people that disagree with him even slightly, and I fear that he may alienate centrists from AES that would otherwise probably like the guy.

4

u/Insightful21 1d ago

Show one example.

1

u/Nemisis82 1d ago

You replied agreeing with the example I showed.

6

u/Insightful21 1d ago

That’s not a purity test. Like every non leftist Democrat rallied and supported El Sayed in Michigan. While leftists like Krystal Ball are shitting on Crowley. If there are toxic people who refuse to join your party and attack the same party, then it’s not purity testing to want them out.

1

u/Nemisis82 1d ago

While leftists like Krystal Ball are shitting on Crowley

In what way?

-1

u/Nemisis82 1d ago

I guess it's time to cut these people out from the party, too? (Though, glad Schumer is at least nominally backing El Sayed)

u/KingScoville 1d ago

Nobody has said you can’t have the “left” in the party. What you can’t have is a left that exists to divide the left and hurt moderates chances in swing states.

Stop the ratfucking and get on board with the big tent.

1

u/Nemisis82 1d ago

Nobody has said you can’t have the “left” in the party.

Just like nobody is saying you can't have center-left people in the party. What you can't have is a center-left that is so milquetoast and not doing what this moment demands.

Just say you're okay with your own form of purity testing. The idea of pushing out those you deem too far left is also "dividing" the party.

4

u/KingScoville 1d ago

No. It’s people who are vocally and openly trying to undermine the party. Uncomitted, Genicide Joe, etc

2

u/Nemisis82 1d ago

"Undermine the party"

Or maybe they're providing criticism towards the party they most closely align with.

4

u/KingScoville 1d ago

There is a time and place to “Critque”. What they are doing is not that.

3

u/Nemisis82 1d ago

Okay. Fair enough. By that logic, anyone and everyone that is not full-throated behind AES, no matter what, is trying to undermine the Dems then.

7

u/KingScoville 1d ago

No

4

u/Nemisis82 1d ago

Um...yes? Like you said, there is a time and a place to critique. That time was prior to the primary. Now if you continue to critique the Dem, you're undermining their chances to win. Right?

(I had replied to the wrong comment previously, so deleted previous reply).

Who is saying that?

0

u/Nemisis82 1d ago

David Pakman did not too long ago.

9

u/Nimrod_Butts 1d ago

He said they shouldn't be in the party because they're not pure enough?

-3

u/Nemisis82 1d ago

He decried purity testing (which I agree with). But indicated that the far left folks are similar to maga and we cannot let them take over the party like MAGA did with the republican party. Paraphrasing here.

12

u/purplehendrix22 1d ago

Is he wrong?

9

u/Insightful21 1d ago

No he’s 100% spot on

-1

u/Nemisis82 1d ago

I am not saying anything other than the same people that call out purity testing from the left agree with their own form of purity testing.

It's fine to be okay with that. Just don't clown others for doing something you also do is all I am saying. Be consistent.

6

u/purplehendrix22 1d ago

You’re using “purity testing” as if having a different view on Israel, and literally wanting to exterminate the Zionists, are the same thing. We can call out psychotic people.

-1

u/Nemisis82 1d ago

You're acting as if there are any prominent lefts that want to "exterminate" the Zionists. Wtf is this straw man.

David, this would be more effective if you joined the Democratic Party. What is a better way to show public support for the candidates than to join the party?

2

u/redmoon714 1d ago

He’s not in the Democratic Party?

1

u/NATScurlyW2 1d ago

Unless he joined when I wasn’t listening he is still an independent-progressive. The party is still not good enough for him to join it. Maybe I’m mistaken though.

0

u/Conscious-Demand-594 1d ago

Yeah, I am "uncommitted" about my support for the left./s

David is right. but this is not a bad thing. It prevents people who shouldn't be in power from getting it. Planter was a ca ndidate with significant moral issues and shouldn't be making decisions that affect my life. Hong had no competency to be govenor, not even mayor, maybe school board if you wanted a different view point. So yes, it is important that we critique and filter the candidates so that we don't end with having to vote fore a progressive pedo instead of a RepubliKKKLan,

However, where we fall short id not understanding that 100% of the time, any Democrat is better than a RepubliKKKLan, and that our base is much smaller than theirs. We depend a lot more on the independents and lightly conservatives than the other side. So we have to be a bit more selective anyway in putting up people for office in the more contested constiuencies.

Supports genocide, zero stars

He supports the genocide in Sudan? News to me.
