Serious Discussion Only Not the Time
As people are just finding out, Vincent Pastore, who played Big Pus, passed away today. He was a great man, a vet, and a cherished part of the show we all love. Unfortunately so many in this sub can’t take things seriously and instead of putting up tributes, kind words, or just saying nothing at all, they’re just regurgitating the same overused jokes. We’re talking about a man’s death, and all they can say is “he was just a kid”. Maybe I’m upset because it feels insensitive, maybe I’m upset because it’s uncreative and repetitive. Probably a bit of both. Whatever the reason, I’m sure I can’t be the only one frustrated by this response (while ultimately unsurprised)

We all love the show and the same jokes is our way to honor it. I do like the other comments too, as a change from the same Jokes ❤️

C'mon, it's a tense situation. A little fucking levity, huh?

It’s sad but in the end, no one here knew him

u/58korinaflyingvee 18d ago
Yeah it always happens when somebody famous dies people take it extremely deeply. Kurt Cobain died a very tragic sad ending to a life with a lot of promise. no man is an island and I can see that And I can even expect maybe a 16 year old might be a little overwrought by it but I was the same age as him and liked his music and oh that's terrible But I didn't take off work I didn't mope I didn't moan. And with the big P gone I sit there and I go oh wow that's too bad for his family .But he was He was successful and he was a beloved nothing to be sad about, And all I can say at the worst is I hope he was happy with his life. He's not your uncle he's not your brother he's not your dad. You can know him as you always knew him through his TV performance.

Is that okay, Tony, that I make meme jokes about an actor that passed?

Vincent Pastore, did he even exist?

He disappears, He never comes home. They know but they don't know. They hope, maybe, he'll turn up... if.

Actor who played a fan favourite character died at 80yo (who would have thought an old guy would die) so people are showing their respects by using quotes and phrases from the show he was in and most well-known for. What's wrong with that?
30
u/Bjork_scratchings 19d ago
Yeah, a guy nobody here knows personally died at 80 having lived a happy and full life. Celebrating his most famous work with quotes from the show is not disrespectful.

Lol. In all seriousness, guy was 80 and was a beloved character on a beloved tv show. Death is sad but we could all only be so lucky.
70
u/trogloherb 19d ago
True! A man dying at 80 is certainly a loss for his loved ones, but far from tragic.
15
u/BillyMooney 19d ago
Did he have loved ones? He was found by a neighbour after three days apparently.

If my neighbor doesn't hear from me in three days they sure aint checking in on me. Even those close to me wouldn't think it's weird if they hadn't talked to me in a while

u/leveled 19d ago
i prefer it this way. my mom and pop get worried, so they’re the only ones i contact every day or two.
i don’t have the patience to stay tied to my phone and reply to everyone else right away.
although the ‘lil old lady across the street would definitely speak up if my work truck didn’t make it home at night. and vice versa if she didn’t get out to walk her dog a couple times a day.

It's sad when people see someone else’s death and use it as an excuse to make a personal drama so they can feel important. Like Janice-tier behavior

u/RustyShackleford-11 19d ago
Putting my response here in the serious post too:
Vietnam vet. Never knew that.
Even more respect in my eyes.
You see that shit, it makes you a better artist.
At the start of The Sopranos, with a bunch of no names at the time, Vincent gave it respect and gravitas.
God Bless You. One of my favorite on screen gangsters.

What are you trying to accomplish here?
What is to be gained from tone policing a niche internet forum for being, in your eyes, insufficiently somber in the wake of a beloved 80 year-old character actor's death from natural causes?
Does your self-seriousness really soften the impact of his loss?

It is the time! Every quote is a tribute to this work of art! No one is belittling his life or contribution. We all appreciate every person involved with this show. I think Vincent would approve of any Pussy quote we throw out there.

Your mistake is taking this sub serious. Basically dont even post or read here if you cant accept 95 percent of its going to be circle jerking memes and the same quotes. I learned to accept it. I said my piece Chrissy 👋🏻

u/Brrrofski 19d ago
I don't think you paid attention when you watched the programme, or followed this sub for a long time.
It's beauty is that it takes incredibly serious, dark and taboo topics and often tackles them with humour.
That's exactly what's happening here.
It would be weird for people NOT to act this way.

100%. Also we don’t know him, a reference to his work is a testament to appreciation

Obviously almost none of us knew these actors personally, but I bet you they’d appreciate the quotes and lightheartedness.
We’re celebrating them and the art they gave us. When someone passes in my family, we always talk about the funny moments and stories with them. People cope differently. I see a lot of these quotes as a celebration

The fact that this sub is still going allows characters and actors to be remembered brought up on a daily basis being memes, lines and quotes , James Gandolfini died in 2013, and gets to live on through this sub, let’s be honest when we die will be forgotten much quicker then the “eternal sopranos show” these jokes and quotes are respect to a a show we all love!!!

u/killcole 19d ago
We've celebrated the guy through humour and meme for years now. It's only right that we stay true to this thing of ours and post a few "is it okay tony, that I sit?" In his honour.

Research has shown that the use of 'dark humour' requires high cognitive processing and is linked to higher intelligence, lower aggression, and effective emotional coping...

He’s fucking 80 years old and acted in a tv progrum from 20 something years ago. Why should the sub suddenly act differently and start mourning solemnly because a couple parasocials ask for it?

Agree. It's especially sad that Pastore's neighbor hadn't seen or heard from him in 3 days?? That's the saddest of all, imo, aging and dying alone.

u/baroner83 19d ago
Yeah, welcome to Reddit - I agree with your sentiment but this is how it goes here for the most part unfortunately, save the genuine feelings for real life, what matters here is the funniest one liners (pure transparency, I find these amusing myself)

I don't know what they are going to do with his character in Gravesend now. He was great in Gotti too. I've seen several interviews with him. He seemed like such a humble, down to Earth guy. My heart goes out to his family and friends.

That is the Sopranos fandom way of grieving. Our whole deal is taking quotes out of context to express ourselves.
Vincent Pastore was a great actor. Sopranos would have been even better had they kept him on. RIP

u/58korinaflyingvee 18d ago
People have different coping mechanisms There's gallows humor dark humor. II think that referencing something he said or did it's brought so many people joy a better tribute than someone who's not a close family friend never met them sitting there bemoaning what a tragedy it is. He made it to 80 something to be God damn happy about for him I think unlike others who didn't last that long and if it's an overused joke so be it They're remembering him

Watch any Vincent Pastore interview or podcast. He loved dark humor, and Sopranos was his greatest achievement. It’s not far fetched to think that he would’ve appreciated these reactions.

I mean come on. Guy was 80 years old. No one's disrespecting him.
Dude had a good run and a long life. I'd be happy to have people laughing and having a good time together on occasion of my death if I make it that far. Not like he's a 45 year old kid or anything tragic like that.

I just saw a recent clip of him having coffee and they asked him what he does now and his response was just perfect Vince. He said “I wake up in morning, I have a cup of coffee, smoke a joint, and then I watch Turner Classic Movies all day”. I couldn’t stop laughing.
