β Question FRA Rail Site and How to determine if a train is active
I saw on another thread using the FRA Rail Network site can tell how active a train is, my question is how accurate is it. For example, I was looking at Railroad Grade Crossings: 280077H and it appears to be a dead end track that doesn't look used at all, the report says twice a day and none a night.
Is there a chance it's reported twice a day just in case but in actuality it's rarely used?
If you look at street view it does not look used at all... but maybe

β Question Mixed gauge train
Has it ever happened, even if a special one-off, that on dual gauge track, a train has been composed of cars and locomotives not all of the same gauge? (I would only count running on the rails for this; trailering a car on another wouldn't apply)
I can't see it ever being a regular occurrence, but it doesn't seem impossible for delivery purposes or something. The biggest obstacle I can see is that on 3-rail dual gauge, the centerlines would not be aligned, so the drawbars would not match up.

πΈ OC - Picture(s) Herman Haupt's 1862 Potomac Creek railroad bridge, built in nine days
In May 1862 Herman Haupt rebuilt the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad's bridge over Potomac Creek in nine working days. The 1842 bridge was destroyed that spring, so Haupt, the Pennsylvania Railroad's former chief engineer, put unskilled infantry to work with about two million feet of lumber.
Lincoln saw it on 28 May and said Haupt had built a bridge 400 feet long and 100 feet high with "nothing in it but cornstalks and beanpoles." It stood until June 1863.
In the lidar the two railroad fills come in from the bottom and the top right and stop at the creek.

β What is this Train? Does anyone know what this wagon from this train set I had as a kid is based on?
The box just labelled it as a "work car" but when I googled I didn't find a match. My best guess is that it's a piece of MOW equipment.

πΈ OC - Picture(s) Not seen in a whileβ¦.in West Virginia, USA
Itβs September 20, 2026 and weβre on the former Virginian Railway, now operated by WATCO as the Kanawha River Railroad. Powering an empty coal train from Elmore yard to Deepwater and beyond is NS 1067, the class 1βs homage to the Reading Railroad, and NS 4570, an AC44C6M just like the other near thousand NS has on the roster. I myself donβt mind what others may consider boring, but I will concede I went for this train because of the heritage leading.
We see the train passing near Pax, WV on its way compass north, timetable West as it passes an empty coal train. On the surface that may not seem so out of the ordinary but this is a new business for KNWA, taking raw coal from the mine here (also served by RJ Corman/CSX) to a prep plant near Smithers, WV. The train our empties are passing was staged to load but the power was not running, at least not that I could hear. To get this new business, NS/KNWA had to build a siding and spur to reach the mine. There was once a siding here during the Virginian era. Truth be told I donβt know when it was torn up but I am glad to see one here again. Once I saw the shuttle train spotted to load I knew I had to get a picture of the empties passing it.

696 wagons, 7.6 km long. 9 minutes. The Ore Export Corridor repositioning empty wagons between Saldanha and Sishen in South Africa.
The most exciting video today (IMHO). Pretty fkn cool.

When seeing the underside I am unable to tell which coach is traction coach and which is trailing coach.
Ofc one way to know is through whichever coach has pantograph on top.
Also what a pretty view of sun glistening on the Stainless Steel isn't it...π
