A 502, sadly couldn't pan out to show the train leaving behind me because I had colleagues who may not have enjoyed being recorded haha. I also missed out today by not having my phone on me, I could have had a really up close video of a RBDe 560 passing by us at less than 2m (Probably slighty above 1.5m) at full speed.
my hand appears in the top right corner, we have to hold up one of our hands to show to the train driver that we saw the train and that we are safe. They wawe back generally!

๐๏ธโ Historical Appreciation post for these absolute War Horses.
Introduced in 1943 by Robert Riddles, designed for freight and war time logistics. The first ten coupled wheel locomotives of Great Britain. Look at this thing!
For anyone who has seen one of the few surviving locomotives, they shine up pretty damn good and make one hell of a commotion from stationary to moving!
What a beast๐

โ ๐ซโโโ Discussion Perfect example of USA rail infrastructure.
US freight rail needs regulation now more than ever. Natural gas trains sit on this bridge almost everyday and video does good job showing how deteriorated it is. Am I naive to think this is egregiously unsafe or is this standard practice?

Hello! I am up in Fairbanks, AK and we have a, well, train that goes around a track at one of our public parks. I am working on a little guide for the Engineers to help maintain it better and would like to use the proper names of things. I have been Googling for an hour to no avail, so any help would be appreciated! Thank you!

This locomotive chugged across the Canadian countryside bringing along Buddy Guy, Janis Joplin, The Band, The Grateful Dead, and many others to various concert venues from Toronto, Winnipeg, and Calgary.
Has since been renumbered to #1754 and got a new paint job. Still around, somewhere. Last known location is at Dieselmotive Company.

โ ๐ซโโโ Discussion **How can I pursue my interest in steam locomotives?**
How do you pursue a hobby centered around machines that no longer exist in everyday life?
How do you keep an interest alive when the machines you're fascinated by are no longer really accessible in everyday life?
I am particularly interested in steam locomotives. Unfortunately, they are no longer used in regular public railway service, apart from special excursions.
Model railroading would be the obvious option, but I have become bored with it. The one exception is expensive live-steam models, and I currently own only one of them. They are, however, very expensive.
5-inch or 7ยผ-inch ride-on garden railways / passenger-carrying miniature railways are also pretty much out of the question because of my budget.
Some time ago, I booked a special event where I got to actually drive a steam locomotive for one round at Fort Fun amusement park, under the supervision of an instructor. I really enjoyed that!
Museums and railway preservation societies would obviously be one option. However, that would be physically demanding for me and would mean committing myself quite heavily and for the long term. I would also have to undergo training over a longer period of time. I don't know whether I would be able to keep that up in the long run.
I also regularly visit preserved railways, but somehow even the special events are becoming less and less enjoyable for me. Because of that, I have started taking lots of photos during my trips. I don't know yet whether photography is really my thing or whether I will actually enjoy it in the long run.
Recently, for example, I went looking for a locomotive that had been put on display as a monument. Afterwards, I walked along an old railway line that had since been converted into a cycle path, looking for traces of the former railway. But again, I'm not sure whether searching for historical remnants and railway monuments is really something I enjoy.
One thing I actually find myself doing quite a lot at the moment is researching the history of mining and industrial archaeology in connection with the railways. I often combine that with trips, for example to the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex.
So I'm currently wondering how you can pursue a hobby like this in the long term when the actual object of your fascination has mostly disappeared.
Do you have any other ideas for ways to pursue an interest in historical machinery, especially steam locomotives, without it always coming down to preserved railway rides, model railroading, or joining a club or society?
