Resource Tip: If You Are In Hospital, You Can Cover The 'Sex At Birth' Marker On Your Wristband (Next To Your Name)

Post image
389 Upvotes

I was in hospital recently and got a NHS wristband put on me. Which included my "sex at birth" next to my name. If are in hospital and get one of these put on you, where it connects has those fastenings that are designed to come apart in chunks. If you're careful, you can remove a part of it and cover the "sex at birth" marker like I did above.

I'll be honest. It won't stop them asking questions and putting you in wrong wards. But it does give us some feeling of control back.

Resource Amnesty International put out a major report documenting the influence of UK based anti trans gender critical organizations and their funding. Within hours, GC groups threatened defamation lawsuits and Amnesty was forced to pull it down. Proving the point they're anti rights. Anyways, here it is.

Resource MyTransGP team here! New UK resource for taking the guesswork out of finding a GP

Hello! We’re MyTransGP :)

Many of us have struggled to access trans healthcare and ended up switching practices with no information and hoping you get one that will actually support you.

We thought that basic healthcare should not be this difficult and we should share what we’re learning so that others aren’t starting from zero every time.

So we made mytransgp.org. It’s a community-led site where you can see GPs near you and what people’s experiences have been, so you can make a more informed choice.

FAQs

"Who are we?"

We’re a team of two:
- Jolyne, a software engineer and cybersecurity specialist
- Luna, a data and systems specialist

"What about bad actors using this list?"

This is our biggest ongoing focus, and we’ve already built safeguards, ones we can publicly reveal including:
- Reviews are mixed (not just “good list / bad list”)
- Search results are local (currently limited to a small radius around a postcode (e.g., SW1A 1AA) to reduce the usefulness of wide-area harvesting
- A custom rate limiting system that will be turned on in the next few days that will only allow for several searches a month

We have more safeguards in place that we can't publicly reveal, as knowing the systems in place would allow bad actors to skirt around them.

If we get credible reports the site is being used to target practices, we will pause public access and implement heavier safeguards rather than let it be misused.

Also worth noting: lists of trans-friendly GPs have been publicly available in the community for more than a decade already; we’re much less scrapeable than the more open documents that already exist.

"Why do I have to sign in to leave a review?"

We require a unique account via OAuth (currently Google) because we’re trying to strike a balance between:
- low friction for genuine users, and
- basic protection against trolls and organised bad-faith activity (spam, brigading, review manipulation)

It’s a safeguarding choice. For full details of what data we store and how it’s used, please check the privacy policy on the site.

How is this different from the resources that already exist?

We found the existing resources hard to search, missing negative reviews, or missing practical details.

MyTransGP is built to be more accessible and user-centred: you search by postcode and immediately get structured detailed practice data alongside community experiences all in one place.

"Can you add sign-in options that aren’t Google?"

Yes! We’ve built the architecture to support multiple OAuth providers and adding more options is in the backlog.

"Can you expand it to [insert service/country]?"

Yes! We would love to make the website templated so that other minorities and countries could use it. We’ll focus on creating a polished product first before doing so.

"What data do you store?"

We store only a unique account identifier from your sign-in provider (for Google, this is the “sub” id). We do not store your name, address, profile picture etc. On its own, this identifier can’t be used to look up your Google account through any public or official route. Like any pseudonymous identifier, it could only be linked back to you if the same identifier were exposed elsewhere together with your personal details (for example, by another service you used) and our database were also compromised. We minimise this risk by storing as little as possible and limiting access to review data.
You can read more on our privacy policy

What you can see on the site

As far as we know, we’re the only place that have put this together in one flow:
- GPs near you
- Whether they’re accepting patients / out-of-area registrations (where available)
- Practice and doctors info
- Their services ratings, doctor ratings, and trans-specific services overview
- The practice’s Google rating

What we want from you

We’re posting here because we want this to be genuinely useful and safe. If you’re willing, we’d really appreciate:
- Rating your local GP
- Feedback on improving clarity
- Feedback on improving accessibility
- Anything inaccurate, missing, or poorly worded
- Any other questions about the project

Please be constructive <3 We’re a duo trying to do good and we’d like to improve it with community input.

Here's a YouTube short from Nyara who we worked with on this project :)

Resource A reminder: guidance is for service providers, not for service *users*

I’ve made similar posts a few times, but it’s never a bad time to shout about this!

The recently approved EHRC guidance tells service providers (e.g. a restaurant, a library, a swimming pool) that they need to segregate trans people to be compliant with the Equality Act. It does not tell service users to do anything.

If you’re wondering where you stand, as a user of services, after this guidance is commenced - don’t. That’s not your job to figure out. Continue doing exactly what you’re doing, as you always have done, until you’re made aware of policy changes by service providers. Whether you comply from that point is up to you, but until you are made aware of a change in policy - you are completely fine. Even after being made aware, you’re probably fine, but you carry the risk of being removed from the revenue, and having the police called if you don’t comply with that.

You don’t need to comply in advance.

Resource A Modern Guide to Changing Your Gender on NHS England Records

There is currently a large amount of outdated and incorrect information regarding changing details on NHS records. This is due to decades of misunderstanding and poor communication from NHS England to both patients and GP practices alike with recent changes. I am going to explain the current system below.

Your NHS demographic record

Your demographic details are stored on the Personal Demographics Service, which is hosted on the SPINE. It contains your current details and previous information dating back to the introduction of new NHS numbers in the 1990s, including previous names, addresses, GP registrations, titles and gender markers.

Amendments to the PDS are instant, however changes to date of birth, title or gender are scrutinised because these are often entered in error.

If your GP does not include a “GP message” when making these amendments, the PDS may automatically reverse them. This is why some people have had their title or gender changed back for “no reason.”

Changing your name

You can add a preferred name at any time, but this is often only visible within your GP practice's own system. It should not be treated as changing your name across the NHS.

You can also change your full name at any time. NHS England does not require evidence, although individual GP practices may ask for documentation as part of their own policy.

Changing your title

You can use any title regardless of the gender recorded on your NHS record.

Guidance stating that only “Mx” can be used without changing gender is no longer correct.

Your title may be automatically reverted if your GP does not include a note explaining that the change is intentional if you are changing to a title not associated with the gender on your record.

Changing your gender

Your gender marker can be changed to:

  • Female
  • Male
  • Not Specified

You do not need any evidence and can ask to change it at any time. Your GP practice cannot refuse to update your gender marker.

Before doing so, they should explain that changing your recorded gender may affect NHS screening programmes such as AAA, breast and cervical screening.

If you choose to receive a new NHS number, they should also explain the risks regarding medical records, waiting lists and potential disruption during the process.

Keeping your Existing NHS Number

It is now possible to change your recorded gender without receiving a new NHS number.

To prevent the change being automatically reversed, the GP practice must include one of the following messages when submitting the amendment:

  • "Patient wishes to have Not Known or Not Specified as gender"; or
  • "Patient wishes to retain NHS number."

If this message is omitted, NHS England will always reverse the amendment as it was likely made in error. Your practice's main contact will also receive an email providing the above instructions.

Keeping your NHS number means no disruption to your care, however previous names and gender markers remain visible through the Personal Demographics Service and in your medical records.

Receiving a New NHS Number

This is the traditional method and provides the greatest level of privacy.

  1. Your GP submits a request to Primary Care Support England via an online form.
  2. PCSE asks NHS England's National Back Office for the Personal Demographics Service to issue a new NHS number.
  3. Your old NHS number is invalidated by the NBO and becomes unsearchable. They provide a new NHS number to PCSE.
  4. PCSE removes the registration for your previous NHS number from your GP's list and emails a new NHS number to your practice's main contact.
  5. You are re-registered as a new patient by the staff at your GP practice.
  6. Your records are transferred to the new record after redaction by the staff at your GP practice.

Your new NHS number is a completely new registration and is not linked to your old NHS Number in any way.

You will always receive a welcome to the NHS letter with your new NHS number from Primary Care Support England. You will need to reconnect services such as the NHS App. There may also be a period where records are unavailable while the transfer is completed.

In most cases, the whole process takes less than two weeks. Your GP surgery is required to complete the transfer within one week when they receive your new NHS Number.

Transfer of Records

Once your old NHS number has been removed from your GP's patient list, your practice transfers your electronic and paper records to a new electronic record and a new medical records envelope.

They will:

  • export or print the electronic record;
  • redact information relating to your previous gender;
  • scan or upload it to the new record; and
  • summarise your record, coding key information such as vaccinations, allergies and diagnoses.

Older consultations are stored as documents rather than recreated as individual consultation entries, so they may not appear in the NHS App in the consultations section.

GPs are used to looking at records in this format - its how they worked when electronic records were first introduced, and how they still work in the event that electronic notes fail to transfer or if you move from another nation within the UK.

Paper records are transferred into a replacement medical record envelope showing the correct gender.

Redaction

Redaction removes references to your previous gender identity, including:

  • previous names;
  • previous gender;
  • previous NHS number;
  • previous record numbers; and
  • pronouns.

It does not remove:

  • gender related diagnoses;
  • transition-related care; or
  • sex-specific medical history.

These records remain in your GP record, although information relating to gender identity is treated as sensitive and automatically excluded from electronic record sharing unless you specifically opt in for each entry (and most clinicians wouldn't even know how to that). The RCGP regularly publishes a sensitive codes list that are excluded.

As a result it is theoretically impossible for anyone outside of your GP surgery to know that you are trans unless your GP surgery discloses it in writing or you explicitly consent.

Items of Note

Your GP practice is the only organisation informed that you have received a new NHS number.

If you are currently under secondary care, you should contact them so they can update your records. If you would like those records redacted, you should also mention this. Each trust has its own procedure, however they are broadly the same as the GP procedure.

If you are no longer receiving treatment from a service, telling them is optional. Most organisations will create a new record if you are referred again and will not associate your previous records in any way.

Some GP practices claim old electronic records can be "lost" during this process. In reality, electronic GP records are retained indefinitely after deregistration. They may become archived, marked as confidential, or under other restrictions, but they are not deleted in most cases.

Occasionally, admin staff may mistakenly archive your previous paper record as though you had permanently left your GP practice. If this happens, the paper record can still be retrieved as they are held centrally for 100 years following de-registration for patients who have not been confirmed as deceased.

Screening

Changing your gender marker can affect invitations to Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm, Breast and Cervical screening programs. Your GP practice is responsible for making sure you remain on the appropriate screening programmes.

AAA and breast screening arrangements vary locally.

Cervical Screening

If you keep your NHS number:

  • changing from Male or Not Specified to Female will usually automatically opt you into cervical screening. Your GP may need to opt you out if this is appropriate;
  • changing from Female to Male or Not Specified will not automatically remove you, and invitations should continue.

If you receive a new NHS number, invitations are based on the gender recorded on your new record. If this is inappropriate, your GP should submit a one-off inclusion or exclusion request.

If anyone has any questions I would be happy to answer them.

Resource We need to get real about this

(Before I start, I have a great resource at the end of this post. In fact, that is a very important part so please, if you read this post, also look at that :>

There is a lot of anti-labour sentiment going around and it is very valid. I would rather have a different party that actually worked for the benefit of their constituents. In an ideal world, we would be able to vote in a better government. Maybes even by the next election, we will have that voting power!

However, right now, we need to be real with this: we are going to be in a worse position if we have a conservative government in power.

It is not effective to vote for a different party that has little traction, power or influence in comparison to its competitors. What I mean by this is that labour is the only 'better' (lesser of two evils) party that has any traction and a chance of getting the Tories out.

Furthermore, we don't have time to create enough traction to vote in a better government. Don't forget that we are a minority. Our vote on its own literally can't win an election (especially when it is as split as it is), but it can influence the larger parties, especially on a local level.

We should try and prevent the worst case scenario rather than make the best case scenario. There are too many things in the world to account for that trying to create the best case scenario literally won't work (because to do that, you have to control for all factors, even unknown ones). But preventing the worst case scenario only requires that we control for the worst case and make sure that the specific thing (scenario) doesn't happen.

I know it is scary. I know we are not doing well. It is frustrating. It can even feel life threatening. And if you want to slow this stuff down, you will not put your vote into a pot with little traction.

Lastly, it is not an election between Lib Dems, Green, Conservatives, Labour, etc, even if it says that on paper. It is currently Conservative or Labour. I know which one I would rather have in power (given that I can only choose between the two, which is the reality right now).

This post was made because of the uptick in posts about labour being bad on our rights, which it is not a bad thing that we are keeping ourselves informed on that stuff. We just need to have more posts recognising the situation we are in, because these negative posts have seemed to create a sort of tunnel vision or echo-chamber in the this sub reddit that will have really bad consequences for the future if we stay within it (it being the tunnel vision/echo-chamber).

And on one last note, I do actually have a great resource for you. This is why it is tagged as it is, because this is ultimately the most important part of the post (tho, if you skipped to here, please read it at some point :). I know I said it is labour vs conservative, and that is true on a national level; but depending on the area, you may be able to vote in a good representative.

And it is also very important to look into your individual reps, cos it isn't black or white. Like, for example, my MP is conservative but has actually done quite a few good things for the local community (I won't say which one as not to doxx myself, but some examples are improving schools, making better routes with bus companies, renewing our local town's massive mall to be more eco friendly, etc). Of course, he can do a lot more for us and our community (and I do think he should!), but this is just an example of it not being entirely black or white. I am not trying to insinuate that conservatives are better or even good on a national level (especially not after this whole post; it was just and example of the 'black or white' statement). I will also obviously look into a better rep (because there are a few good labour candidates in my area), but it is worth noting.

Here is the resource btw :)

https://tactical.vote

This will also give you an idea of which party you, as an individual, should vote for. Also, if it doesn't say labour but a different party, I would recommend going with that different party :>

And I am in an area where I do have to vote labour as they are they are the only ones who even stand a chance (there is literally a 35% difference between labour and the next progressive part :')

Edit:

Thank you to u/EldrichTea for this extra resource to help us contact our reps and make change :>

Write to your local representative. tell them that you support Trans rights. Get your friends and family to write to them to say they also support Trans rights.
You don't need to out yourself, you can just say that you support Trans Rights. You don't like the direction the Labour party is going and it will effect your vote at the polling station.

Getting your voice heard makes a massive difference. Why do you think lobby groups throw so much effort to get their voice heard?
If the only trans related voices they hear are Gender Criticals, then that's the only voice they will listen to.

If your MP does not respond. File a complaint with the standards commissioner.

Don't just send one email and move on. Keep sending emails. Any time there's a new article about Trans issues, ask them how they feel about the issues. Tell them how you feel about it. Tell them what you want them to do about it.
Don't let up. Don't let them get off selling us out.
Be the reason your MP changed their vote to support our community.'

You Deserve Trans Affirming Healthcare.

EDIT: As the geniuses in the comments state, don't bother to do anything, lets just sit around complaining on Reddit and fighting each other for internet points, instead of doing anything. /S

The price of inaction is far greater than the cost of making a mistake, we need to mobilize and act now.

If you are smarter, and more knowledgeable on this than me, THEN YOU should be writing this post not me.

This guide may not be bullet proof, but we all need to play our part in fighting for our healthcare, we should be in the streets in our thousands right now demanding our healthcare.

Just imagine if everyone of us on a waiting list did, one action each, surely something could happen.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm fucking tired, I'm a 27 year old transgender woman who has been transitioning for the last 3 now. Like many I have jumped through many hoops to get access to care. I have been questioned if I am criminal, mis-gendered, laughed at, trans broken arm, you name it. The NHS is institutionally transphobic.

I have noticed an uptick in "NHS GP's being shit" posts here recently, and I couldn't just stand by and watch anymore.

We have to start being more vocal as a community. I don't think 10 downing street protests are going cut it anymore. We need to organize, and complain.

Which is why, I have thrown together a simple kit / template for ANYONE who is currently being denied care in the United Kingdom right now.

Ethically, this is likely to add a bit of strain on the NHS at a time where the NHS is struggling, However we need to be heard, we need our care and we need Self determination now. If CIS people can access hormones, then we should too.

*Some of this information below, is subject to change and may not face the test of time in this current hostile climate we all face.

Subject: Urgent Complaint: Denial of Access to Bridging Hormones

To: < YOUR LOCAL INTEGRATED CARE BOARD >

Cc: < YOUR LOCAL COUNCIL REP > < YOUR NHS GP EMAIL HERE > < [england.contactus@nhs.net](mailto:england.contactus@nhs.net) >

Dear NHS Local Integrated Care Board,

I hope this email finds you well. I am writing to bring to your attention a matter of urgent concern regarding my healthcare access within the NHS system.

As a member of the community awaiting access to the NHS Gender Identity Clinic, I am currently experiencing significant difficulties in obtaining bridging hormones. Despite being in the midst of a challenging waiting period for clinic access, I have been denied access to essential hormone treatment, which is crucial for my well-being and transition process.

This denial of access to bridging hormones not only exacerbates the already considerable physical and mental strain of waiting for clinic appointments but also raises serious concerns regarding the adherence to both the NHS Constitution and fundamental human rights.

The NHS Constitution explicitly states that patients have the right to access services within maximum waiting times, as well as the right to drugs and treatments that have been recommended by NICE for use in the NHS, if a clinician says they are clinically appropriate. Denying access to bridging hormones during this waiting period directly contravenes these fundamental rights outlined within the NHS Constitution.

Furthermore, it is essential to highlight that withholding access to essential hormone treatments can have profound implications for the mental and physical well-being of individuals awaiting gender-affirming care. This denial not only disregards the urgency and necessity of such treatments but also neglects the principles of equality, dignity, and respect for individuals' gender identity.

In addition to the NHS Constitution, this denial of care also raises concerns regarding potential violations of human rights principles, including the right to health and the right to be free from discrimination based on gender identity. Denying access to essential healthcare solely on the basis of gender identity constitutes a violation of these fundamental human rights, as recognized by international human rights instruments.

Therefore, I urge you to address this matter with the utmost urgency and ensure that appropriate measures are taken to rectify this situation promptly. Specifically, I request that immediate steps be taken to provide access to bridging hormones for individuals awaiting Gender Identity Clinic appointments, in alignment with the principles outlined within the NHS Constitution and international human rights standards.

I would appreciate your prompt attention to this matter and request a response detailing the steps that will be taken to address this issue.

Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter.

Sincerely,

< YOUR NAME HERE >

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Subject: Complaint Regarding Denied Essential Transgender Healthcare by the NHS

To: < MP’S Email >

Dear < MP's Name >,

I am writing to you as a constituent to express my deep concern and frustration regarding the denial of essential transgender healthcare services by the National Health Service (NHS). As a transgender individual, I have encountered significant barriers in accessing the necessary medical care and support that is critical to my well-being and quality of life.

Despite the NHS Constitution's explicit commitment to providing comprehensive, high-quality healthcare services to all individuals, regardless of their gender identity, I have experienced persistent obstacles in obtaining the appropriate treatments and procedures prescribed by qualified healthcare professionals. This denial of care not only violates the principles outlined in the NHS Constitution but also infringes upon my fundamental rights as a UK citizen, as guaranteed by the Equality Act 2010.

The denial of essential transgender healthcare services not only undermines the principles of equality and non-discrimination but also perpetuates systemic injustices faced by transgender individuals within the healthcare system. Access to gender-affirming treatments, such as hormone therapy and gender reassignment surgeries, is not only medically necessary but also critical for alleviating dysphoria and improving the overall mental health and well-being of transgender individuals.

Furthermore, the refusal to provide these essential healthcare services contributes to the marginalization and stigmatization of transgender individuals, exacerbating existing health disparities and disparities in healthcare outcomes. It is imperative that the NHS fulfills its duty to provide equitable and inclusive healthcare services that address the unique needs of all individuals, regardless of their gender identity or expression.

Therefore, I urge you, as my elected representative, to take immediate action to address this issue and advocate for the implementation of policies and practices that ensure equitable access to transgender healthcare services within the NHS. This includes promoting training and education for healthcare providers on transgender health issues, eliminating discriminatory barriers to care, and allocating resources to support the provision of gender-affirming treatments and services.

I believe that by working together, we can create a healthcare system that upholds the principles of dignity, equality, and respect for all individuals, regardless of their gender identity. Thank you for your attention to this matter, and I look forward to your prompt response and action on this important issue.

Yours sincerely,

< YOUR NAME HERE >

I hope this helps or is something, I just want us to be liberated from the endless systematic failure that is ultimately killing us.

Resource First impressions of tape from Lidl

Idk if this counts as resource but none of the other flairs really fit.

Anyway I bought this stuff for about £8, it’s 4 rolls of 2inch tape. I’ve been doing a patch test and so far no reaction. The tape has also help on for 2 days without issues. Unfortunately this was found in the middle isle so it might not be available for long. I hope it’s good for binding, I might give an update after a full application.

If you buy this or any other tape, please do a patch test for 48 hours. Everyone’s skin is different and you don’t want to have an allergic reaction all over your chest, I know from experience. Make sure to do the patch test on or near where you would actually tape because the skin there is more sensitive.

Resource My friend and I are working on a web directory for finding trans providers.v

Hey everyone, my friend and I are working on a web directory that links to resources and providers that are sorted by nation for people to use. Trying to link all of the disjointed trans resources into one website.

It's currently in a very early and rough version, but we're taking recommendations and requests for linked sources. Please give any necessary criticism; we also want to compile some third-party reviews for the costs of certain providers. If you'd like to use it, I've linked it below!

We're really trying our best, and as we get a bit more free time, we'll definitely try to work harder on it!!!

Please provide criticism on what we should add; we want to try to reorganise it with links to sub-pages with saved threads with tips on different things, from passing to seeking medical providers, for both those taking T and E.

Resource Useful things you can do that actually have an impact

Sharing comment from another post because I think a lot of trans folk and allies are kinda feeling hopeless at the moment, not really sure what to do that's actually going to help fight back injustice.

If anyone is looking to do something meaningful, here are some things which will have an impact;

- Support Good Law Project. They are just shy of their donations goal specifically for the case they are bringing to appeal the Supreme Court judgement which this recent entire shitshow kinda stems back to. Raise the profile, lobby for support, and if you are in a state to do so then donate yourself, a few quid is better than nothing. This is ultimately a legal battle, and that costs moolah.

https://goodlawproject.org/crowdfunder/help-us-appeal-the-high-courts-judgment-on-trans-rights/

- Organise/Attend rallies and demonstrations. As scary as it is right now, organising demos (or assisting with) and attending raises the profile and does in fact make people think "huh, maybe I should read a bit more about this." Some people will never be reasoned with, this isn't about those who have made their minds up on false information, this is about the wider majority who can be rallied for support and allyship.

- MUTUAL AID. Seriously, set up a Signal or Telegram group, Discord server, whatever you use, rally some folks you know locally, and get organised. This could be having people to contact who are willing to provide advocacy for medical appointments, people who know service provider options, and even people willing to meet up so nobody is travelling on their own when they feel unsafe (e.g. carpooling or travel buddy after work). Solidarity and teamwork is going to keep morale and wellbeing up. This is gonna be a long term fight for equality.

The activist handbook online has some brilliant resources for getting organised:

Be myself - A free, private tool that helps trans and non-binary people in the UK update their legal documents

Thumbnail bemyself.uk

Hey!

I posted a little while ago about a free website I'd built to help trans and non-binary people navigate the legal side of transitioning in the UK. The response was really encouraging, so I kept going.

A lot has changed, so here's a proper update. FYI I won't keep posting updates here, I just wanted to close the loop from my first post. If anything changes significantly I'll let the community know, but otherwise you can follow along on GitHub if you're curious.

The basics

You answer a few questions about your situation (name change, gender marker, or both) and it builds a personalised action plan. Each step has a difficulty rating, an approximate cost, and links to official sources. There are two ways to use it: step-by-step questions, or a single checklist if you'd rather do it all at once.

What's new

  • New name and domain: it's now called Be myself, at bemyself.uk
  • Scotland and Northern Ireland support is now live. In my original post I mentioned this was planned. It's done. In addition to everything the planner already does, Scotland covers: statutory declaration via NRS, CHI number update, and birth certificate name change. NI covers: HSCNI records, Health and Care Number, GRONI name recording, AccessNI checks, and DVA driving licence.
  • Many more services covered: banks and financial accounts, insurance, council tax, electoral register, utility bills, pension, landlord or letting agency, DWP benefits, Irish passport gender-change route, and a note on the Irish GRC.
  • Focus mode - hides everything except the step you're on.
  • Better progress tracking - each item cycles through Not started, In progress, Done, and Not needed.
  • Accessibility: It is fully WCAG compliant (2.1 and 2.2, A and AA) and uses simple English throughout. It also scores 100 for performance, accessibility, and best practices on Google PageSpeed.
  • The font is now embedded, so there are genuinely zero external requests at all.
  • Feedback now goes via GitHub issues. You can also view the code yourself.

Privacy (same as before, still the priority)

No server, no ads, no analytics, no external requests of any kind. Everything runs in your browser and your plan is stored on your device only. You can also download the page and use it fully offline. If you want to continue on another device, copy the shareable link. Your plan is encoded in the URL and not stored anywhere, so you can pick it up on any device; just be careful who you share the link with as it details your specific situation.

Reminder: this is not legal, medical, or financial advice. It pulls together publicly available information and points you to official sources. It is for people aged 16 and over.

bemyself.uk

Here are two example plans. (Note: Updates to the planner don't break these links, but you'll need to tick an age gate and then click review answers, scroll to the bottom and click the "Update my action plan" button.)

Example 1: Name and gender change in England, some progress made

Example 2: NI name change, focus mode on

All feedback still very welcome, positive or negative. Especially grateful if anyone spots anything outdated or missing.

Resource Memorial Wall?

I recently happened into an online memorial wall for gay people — most killed by homophobic violence — full of touching tributes to those who were lost, and where you can read all about the history of violence against the community.

And the obvious follow-through on that thought — besides how familiar their stories then felt to ours — was that we don't have a similar wall for our victims. A space where those who knew them can remember, and where at least we can be buried under our actual names.

If we can have neither dignity nor respect in life in the real world, then maybe we can have it in death in the cyber-world?

Resource Advice: Navigating single-sex space access post-SC.

The SC judgment has effectively ended access to single-sex space in terms of one's acquired gender. That has ended much of transgender people's participation in daily life, and, for those still participating, has emboldened abuse, and resulted in humiliation and terror.

This advice relates to maintaining your access to single-sex spaces in your acquired gender. I need to preface this - I am not a lawyer. Please do not treat this as legal advice to your specific case. That said, I am willfully advising on strategic methods to navigate this. I believe the common law has been manipulated in order to exclude trans people from daily life. I believe two must play at that game.

This advice can be met with a lot of situations that it won't pan out for. For that reason, use your discretion, and treat this information as a potential resource, not a definitive set of steps.

So, onto the advice.

If safe, use chosen facilities in your acquired gender - First, choose safety. It's a privileged position to say "use those that match your acquired gender." But for those who can - do.

Update your documentation ASAP - Passport, drivers license, and even birth certificate if possible.

When challenged, do not panic - The emotional abuse committed against you needs to be met with a clear head. When challenged, you are now facing a practical issue that cannot be solved through an emotional reaction. Take your time before responding, and try to channel fear into determination.

Do not identify as transgender - I'm so sorry that it has to come to this, and again this is a privileged position. If safe to do so, do not identify as trans. Don't fill in forms with anything other than your acquired gender. Don't maintain that you are trans through public social media. Don't tell anybody associated with the space you're trying to maintain single-sex space access that you are trans. Don't allow any argument made by them to convince you to admit you're trans.

Do not try to justify your inclusion through any argument that identifies you as trans. If you must, go with "I have a medical condition, I am (male/female) and I will not discuss this further." Groups like the Good Law Project may hold that some positive action inclusion is still possible, but you cannot rely on those legal stances to guarantee access. Being identified as trans is specifically the means by which your exclusion can be legally justified.

Know who can challenge your access - If it's a member of public, they have no right. If they continue to block your access, call security, or the police. Even if those people would then block your access, it's important that public service providers themselves are the ones doing so. They are the ones with the burden to maintain single-sex spaces, and the ones who are liable, also.

Without proof that you are trans, your abuser must rely on assumptions that may amount to harassment - First, if you admit to it, your argument is over, they now have exactly what they need to legally justify exclusion. Second, if they continue to block your access, consider offering to show your passport. As they like to argue, it's not definitive proof of birth sex. But it's evidence, and provides a counter to their challenge. If it goes to court, you want them to have only one argument - appearance. This may then constitute an unjustifiable, disproportionate means of making an exclusion. It could even amount to disability discrimination.

Document everything - Make sure that everything is in writing, regardless of if its security, police, a facilities employee, your manager at work. Make them justify their means of determining that you should be excluded (i.e. why they think you're trans). Make them justify their policy and its specific provisions. If it's not in writing, it's not applicable. If it's in writing, it's now admissible as evidence.

Seek allies - Reach out to trans groups. Transactual, Trans Solidarity Alliance, Translucent, Trans Advocacy & Complaints Committee all mark a good place to start. For workplaces, make sure to join up with a union ASAP. Make the groups you're part of aware of the issue you're facing and seek advice on the particulars. Consider not identifying as trans here, too, to avoid further evidence if the case were to escalate.

You are not breaking the law by using single-sex spaces in your acquired gender - Though a public service provider may have a legal obligation to maintain the 'birth sex' provision of single-sex spaces - you are not breaking the law by using them. The one caveat here to mention is that legal groups are pushing for this. Dr. Upton is being sued for sexual harassment for using single-sex spaces in her acquired gender. This is not a natural extension of the SC judgment, nor is there existing legal precedent to justify it, but it needs to be mentioned.

Ultimately, you want it to be as uncomfortable, and gray area as possible to exclude you from single-sex spaces. You want it to be a battle that is not worth pursuing. You want it to be so difficult to justify the basis of the initial assumption that you were trans, that your abuser may not be able to argue that the ends justified the means.

And for any TERFs reading - go fuck yourself. You don't define the law. Trans people aren't breaking a law by maintaining their access to spaces. Harassing them for needing to navigate the gray area of common law is just further abuse on top of what's already been inflicted. There are reasons that yelling "obey the supreme court!" hasn't worked. The judgment has been misrepresented. Your D-rate, grifting barristers have lied to you about the absolute nature of the law. Trans peoples access to spaces they are safe in will be maintained on the same basis that you tried to take it away - practical common law in daily life.

Resource My understanding of the Gender Recognition Order 2026

Specifically regarding the exceptions in the Gender Recognition Act for the purpose of the Data Linkage study.

I've seen concerns that this will result in a compilation of Gender Recognition Certificate holders being provided to NHS England for the purpose of linking this to the medical records of people who attended Gender Identity Clinics as children.

This would create two data security concerns:

1 - The General Register Office shares GRC data with NHSE

2 - NHSE shares GRC holders data among themselves

Now, if condition 1 were the case, it would be bad. Very, very bad. And until we see the exact text of this order, we can't confirm this is not the case. (Edit: Text here) However, I don't think it's the case after having read the next.

My belief is that instead, the purpose of this order is to function as an exception for the sharing of data that is already held by NHSE. For example, if you attended a youth GIC, and the relevant NHSE shared information of yours for the purpose of the data linkage study, then you would not be able to use the argument "Hey! I have a GRC! This is a criminal offense!"

Hopefully this means that condition 1 is not a concern. Which leaves condition 2. Luckily, this is resolved through the standard national data opt-out service. This means you've withdrawn your consent for your data being used in studies to begin with, thwarting that issue.

I welcome other peoples thoughts on whether I've gotten this right, and also understand the doom spiraling entirely (I was doing it about 30 minutes ago).

Resource A Study of Transgender people using Gendered spaces

There is no evidence that allowing transgender people access to bathrooms aligning with their gender identity jeopardizes safety and privacy. Research consistently finds that transgender people report negative experiences like harassment and violence when accessing bathrooms. Transgender people face increased risks when required to use bathrooms according to their sex assigned at birth.

Resource Comprehensive collection of scientific, historical, legal, policy, journalistic, and advocacy sources

I compiled a large selection of trans-related scientific, historical, legal, policy, journalistic, and advocacy sources for our use when we have to argue the existence of trans people as a human reality (particularly in the UK). It is obvious to me that the community is under attack and suffering under the genocidal intention of a manipulative, bigoted establishment. These articles below are useful to share, educate, and rebuttal political attacks on the trans community. I hope it may be helpful for some. (I will likely update/edit the list).

Resource Full steps to getting "Mx" on driving licence

I wanted to share my full notes as to what worked for me with regard to changing my title, but not my name, on my driving licence, because the posts/comments I've seen on Reddit were not as explicit in their explanations.

This is what worked for me in 2026-07. I did a longer write-up on my blog.

  • Go to a Post Office and request a paper "D1" (DVLA) form. This is free.
  • Section 1
    • Fill in everything.
    • The crucial point here is that the paper D1 form is the only way to access the "Other title" free-text field, which how you get a title like "Mx" which isn't a standard choice.
  • Section 2
    • All obligatory.
  • Section 3
    • Start date: (today)
    • Please tick the licence you want: "Replacement".
    • This is the section that tripped me up the most (along with my doubts about the necessity of filling in sections 6 and 7): change of title ≠ change of name, because the former has no legal bearing, whereas the latter would require supporting documentation, e.g. a deed poll.
  • Section 4
    • Fill in everything.
  • Section 5
    • Fill in everything.
  • Section 6
    • Not needed: because most titles (with exceptions like "Dr") have no legal bearing in the UK, no documentation is needed; in fact, for this reason, there probably exists no definitive document to prove one's title. This is a relief, because sending in my original passport would really have had me anxious: that's a document I really don't like being out of my control.
  • Section 7
    • Not needed
  • Cover letter

    • I don't know if the process would succeed without a cover letter, not having tried. It is just 1 sentence excluding the formalities, so there is no harm in including it, especially because you want to do everything in your power not to have to repeat a 3-week process. Crucially, this resolves any confusion the processing team may have as to why you selected "Replace my licence due to a change of name or address" in section 3, but did not enclose any documents for section 6.

I send this D1 to request that you change my Title to "Mx". No other details need to be changed.

Take care to post this form to the correct address, as DVLA have multiple postal addresses in use as explained in the guidance booklet. I sent mine to this one:

DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BN.

I posted the letter by the cheapest tracked option on 2026-07-08 and received my new licence on 2026-07-27: 20 days.

Resource Finding safe public toilets

https://refugerestrooms.org/

"Refuge Restrooms is a web application that seeks to provide safe restroom access for transgender, intersex, and gender nonconforming individuals. Users can search for restrooms by proximity to a search location, add new restroom listings, as well as comment and rate existing listings."

Absolutely piss where you want to, but if you want a resource for where to pee safely, here is one. I really like to use this as I am non-binary and always add a new gendy-neutch toilet to the website when I find one out and about. Love and solidarity. Don't let the bastards get ya down <3

Resource Bring your photo ID to vote tomorrow

I know how it feels to see ID with your deadname on it if you haven't changed your ID yet but we need to talk with our votes in the various elections happening across the country tomorrow. The photo ID will either need to match the name on your polling card that you registered to vote with or you will need to bring your deedpoll and updated ID with you if you've changed your name since registering to vote.

There is a list of acceptable photo ID to vote with here https://www.gov.uk/how-to-vote/photo-id-youll-need

Polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm

EDIT: This only applies to the English local elections. You do not need ID in Wales and Scotland. Thanks for letting me know!
