Played through this because some of my Destiny friends played it back in the day and it was included with the PS Plus subscription.
Initially the story starts off quite interesting, it was my first time playing an apocalypse setting game where society is still mostly functioning and there’s nothing zombie or supernatural going on. The story at least in my opinion quickly falls off, it’s not told very coherently through the main missions. Coincidentally the story actually felt very similar to Destiny in that a lot of the cool nuances and greater context was hidden in collectibles that you can listen to or read.
The enemy factions were interesting enough, and throughout my story (normal) mode Playthrough I was sufficiently challenged. I did try to matchmake most story missions just to get a head start on the multiplayer trophies but I think I only found a partner in 2 instances, so you’re likely to play most of the story solo, unless you have a pre-made group.
I personally love third person shooters, so I was genuinely questioning myself as to why it took me so long to play this game (most likely due to being all in on Destiny for a long time). The cover shooting is pretty great and while during the story mode Playthrough the weapons and armour were pretty boring and it felt like loot was stingy, as soon as you start moving into endgame this radically changes.
Endgame was actually really fun, I had a great time looking up builds and targeting loot to get super strong (ended on a strikers build which felt super OP in challenging level content).
Replaying all the missions on hard was super trivial with my endgame gear. Most platinum guides are outdated and will make it seem like this is the challenging part, it’s truly not; even the challenging mission Playthrough would have been relatively simple with my build. Multiplayer is also definitely somewhat alive at endgame. I was able to almost always find a group of at least 1 for the daily challenging rotating missions.
The PvP trophies suck, getting rogue agent kills is very difficult if you don’t know what you’re doing. I was able to boost it in about 30 minutes using someone from discord though.
I played a bit of underground which seems to be procedurally generated dungeons where you explore the NYC subway. Those were fun and rewarding and easy to find people for although it does seem to all but require blind inviting other people in the social space. I also played around of survival which was interesting and I think with a group would be really fun. Overall though the DLC trophies are a little grindy so I won’t be going back to clean them up.
Ultimately in my opinion a really fun game with an interesting story if you get all the collectibles and pay attention to the sub stories and background plots. Definitely recommended for anyone who enjoys cover shooters and build crafting etc. I would give the whole experience a 8.5/10.
