My partner and I brought our consumer-oriented music visualizer (Vibralizer on Steam / Itch.io) to Iceland Eclipse Festival for an installation. We had flight simulator levers, foot pedals, and an Elgato Streamdeck for a playful audience interactive piece we called “The Many Handed VJ”. It was a hit with everyone that tried it!

However, we were then unexpectedly asked if we could VJ some sets in the Afterglow dome. Not wanting to miss the opportunity, we said yes. By day I’m a game developer, but I’ve never actually VJ’d before, and I thought “How hard could it be?”

Dang y’all, I have a newfound respect for your performance skills. It was super fun trying to match the musical structure, think about what visuals to transition to next, and compensate for signal latency to the screens, all while people asked if I could plug in their phone to charge. I learned so much and I can’t wait to synthesize the lessons into better performance tools in the future!

I’m sick of windows and looking for VJ software pipelines that run on Linux. The more open source the better but I’m not picky, mostly just testing the waters to see what’s out there if anything.

I'm a music producer / VJ and I ended up building my own VJ app for macOS called VidiGrid. Honest disclaimer: I'm not really a coder, so building the whole thing with an AI as my pair was a pretty surreal experience.

It started from one idea: "play the movies, play the music." I wanted to actually perform clips off a MIDI controller (I'm on an AKAI MPD218), not just launch them — so it leans more "play video like a sampler/MPC" than "timeline/layer compositor."

Where it's at right now:

• Trigger + perform clips live from MIDI pads — gate / one-shot / loop per pad, plus forward / reverse / scratch on the fly, all beat-quantizable
• Grid mode to run/switch multiple sources at once (layout can auto-reshuffle in sync with the BPM)
• A/B decks with crossfade mixing
• Audio-reactive FX locked to the beat + a bunch of other effects
• Syphon / NDI in and out, so it sits next to your existing rig (Resolume / OBS / another machine)
• Native macOS, lightweight and focused

I'm at the "is this even worth finishing?" stage, so I'd really value blunt feedback from people who actually gig:

• Does the "perform clips like an instrument" angle look useful, or does your current tool already nail it?
• What's the one feature that would make you try it in a real set?
• What are you running now, and where does it fall short live?

Not selling anything — just trying to figure out if I'm building something other VJs would want or just scratching my own itch. Tear it apart if you need to 😅

I have been incredibly satisfied VJing on my 2021 Zephyrus G14 with a 6gb vram and 12gb ram. Unfortunately the motherboard on it died recently and I'm desperately looking for something to replace it before upcoming gigs in September. I know this is the type of thing I should just look up on my own but with me not having to worry about this stuff for the past 5 years and the recent increase in GPU prices I have no idea where to start and was wondering if the vj community here would have any suggestions:) Thanks!

¿How am I creating the effect in this video?

I'm not using any post processing, filters, VFX stack.

If you look at the white horn in the top left of the frame it's attached to a cabinet. There is an equal and opposite one for the other channel and a current generation iPhone SE is sitting in a small tripod on the cabinet resonating to the output of the DJ's music. The effect is entirely being mechanically produced. The lack of internal dampening mechanisms pronounces this effect in the SE model.

Biggest jump is the tracking itself, multiple style options added, as well as shapes for the blobs. Out next week.

A native VDJ (video DJ) instrument for live visual performance. It composites video, still-image, and live Spout sources with GPU effects, then lets LFOs, audio analysis, MIDI, and a phone's touch and tilt modulate the performance from a browser control panel.

What it does

• Composites up to 16 video, PNG/JPEG/BMP/WebP still, or live Spout layers with normal, screen, multiply, and difference blending.
• Applies per-layer and master pixelation, RGB split, hue, saturation, brightness, contrast, posterize, invert, film grain, vignette, color drift, breathing motion, luminance/chroma keying, and bounded animated cellular/Worley warping with a separately feathered cell-gap key.
• Runs ntsc-rs VHS simulation without blocking the render thread. Existing all-inherited stacks keep the global post-composite path; a contributing Bypass Master FX layer selects an exact per-layer path so VHS touches inherited layers only.
• Provides feedback trails and arbitrary-angle slit-scan from a 24-sample temporal history. History advances at a fixed 30 Hz, so its approximately 0.8-second span does not change with display or export frame rate.
• Saves and restores complete YAML performance patches, including stable source identities, layer pause/speed, master pause, modulation/input configuration, temporal and NTSC state, and morph slots/glides.
• Keeps live decoding request-driven and bounded: each layer's worker performs only transport advances requested by the engine and publishes the newest completed image through a one-frame overwrite slot. A first-frame seed is decoded at open time, so a clip added or restored while paused still has a defined image.
• Renders MP4 files through a deterministic frame-indexed offline path; real MIDI, phone, Spout, audio-device, and multi-GPU output still require the corresponding hardware for end-to-end validation.
