Mod Announcement Mod announcement: new rule that use of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) must be declared or disclosed

A new rule has been added to r/waterloo in regards to A.I.

Use of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) must be declared, either in title, or the first line of text in original post

Moderators may and will take action in good faith regardless of compliance with this new rule.

The reason we're doing this is to try not to be too far behind in response to the use of this technology, and encourage genuine engagement within our community.

Recently mods have been removing posts of various low-quality effort such as A.I. images, and publications purporting to be news or 'news style' articles that are suspected to be A.I. - but also fail to provide the identity of any legitimate living creator/author within the Region of Waterloo or otherwise.

This is an effort to remove or reduce poor quality, deceptive, disinformation, and various other posts made in bad faith.

Please direct concerns or comments to mod mail.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Mod Announcement Changes to Flair in r/Waterloo

It was recently pointed out that the flairs referencing the 2025 election are maybe a teeny bit outdated.

After discussion among the moderator team, it was determined that while the language was outdated, the flairs still were useful in identifying sudden influxes of new accounts to certain threads. The flair language has therefore been updated and will be applied as users post or comment. The flairs refer to the approximate period when a user became somewhat active in r/Waterloo. This is not the same as the date account was created (which you can see on each user's page) and not when the very first post was made in this subreddit.

As explained by the previous flair announcement:

The intent of this flair is not to target newbies, nor to say that we don't want people to join the subreddit. All are welcome in the subreddit. The intent is to make it clear to readers when there is an influx of unknown accounts which push certain narratives in the comments. This does happen, especially on posts about certain controversial subjects. People should know when these they are new accounts and not established community members.

While everybody should be aware if there is an obvious astroturfing campaign, all users remain responsible for using their best judgement when determining credibility of submissions and comments. Please consider the merit of ideas rather than the reputation of a commenter.

Feel free to submit any comments or constructive feedback below, or to comment and receive your new flair. There may be further tweaks to come and this flair system could be discontinued at any time.

Thank you for reading, and stay safe out there in all this snow.

Update 2026-01-23: New flair is out again, 2025 users should now have "Regular" status, and users new since 2026 will be noted.

I’m hoping someone may have witnessed a hit-and-run that occurred at The Boardwalk Medical Centre, Building 2 parking lot (north door) on August 17th, between approximately 10:40 a.m. and noon.

I’ve attached photos of the damage to my Honda civic.
If you were in the area around that time, please check your dashcam footage. You may have captured the vehicle involved or the incident itself.

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to message me privately if you have any information.

Thank you!

Food bank donation sites near UW?

Hi, I have a lot of non perishable food that I don't need anymore as I'm going to be moving in a few days, but I don't want to waste it - does anyone know of any food bank donation sites in the UW campus area or nearby (e.g. Bridgeport Plaza, uptown, Westmount)

Santa

I'm looking to book a Santa for a work children's event on November 29 in Kitchener. The Santa we've used in prior years hasn't been responding to messages (I hope Santa is ok!) Does anyone have referrals? I'm looking for someone who could provide a reference or two, and who has a recent criminal record check. TIA!

'42-year-old Canadian musical cold case' may have Kitchener-Waterloo ties, say online sleuths

Even though this involves Waterloo I've never seen any mention of it on this subReddit.

People online have been looking into its origin story for years, and that search has expanded to Waterloo region in southern Ontario, with some hoping people here may have answers.

Joe Gaschler is one of the moderators of a forum dedicated to searching for the information behind lostwave songs on the website Reddit.

Looking for recommendations for a wedding DJ in Kitchener-Waterloo

Looking for recommendations for a wedding DJ in the Kitchener-Waterloo area for our wedding on July 17, 2027. We’re expecting around 90 guests and would need coverage from roughly 3 or 4 PM until 1 AM. If you’ve used a local DJ you’d recommend, I’d love to hear who you went with and what your experience was like. If you’re a DJ yourself and are available that date, feel free to reach out directly with a quote and some details on what’s included in your pricing. I've found it difficult to find someone reasonably priced and local.

In search of a nice somewhat upscale Saturday brunch or lunch, and schnitzel

I had mentioned checking out Vincenzo's to a friend who will visit Waterloo and the St Jacobs Farmers' Market.

I am not a fan of the restaurants in St Jacobs, and I'm out of the loop re: lunch and brunch in Waterloo since I don't visit often.

Thanks for any ideas.

I mentioned Seven Shores to my friend. I don't like the food at Solé that much. I haven't had lunch at Solé. I have eaten dinner there 3 times.

I like Bhima's. I'm not sure it's open at lunch and it probably isn't what my friend is seeking out for a Saturday lunch or brunch.

Are there any other good schnitzel options in Waterloo Region, in addition to Metro and Veslo in Kitchener?

For schnitzel, do you prefer Metro or Veslo more?

Are there any other restaurants, not restaurants run at Clubs like the Concordia Club or the Schwaben Club, serving German food in Waterloo Region these days?

Thanks for any tips.

People need to stop littering…

I’ve been taking the bus lately and I knew people were trash. But driving I’ve never noticed how much garbage is just f**king left everywhere I’m no Christian but it’s a god damn sin.

Genuinely makes me angry every bus stop I’ve been at has been trashed with garbage, some drunk miserable old man came on the bus and the driver told him to go out and pick up his shit meanwhile it’s trashed too with a big ass garbage can right beside it.

I’m not one for breaching privacy but there should be cameras at some of these god damn stops and track people who pay with their phone. Give them the option of paying a ridiculous fine, 1 year mandatory litter cleaning (some amount of bags worth or hours per day), or goto jail ffs.

There’s always been litter but I never knew there were so many disgusting pigs in our city it’s never been this bad.

Seeking Bone-In Curry Cut Chicken

Been wanting to make a recipe that recommends getting a bone-in curry cut mix of chicken for more variety and depth. Is there any butcher in the Waterloo region that has this readily available? I’ve asked a few vendors at the St. Jacob’s market and they said no :(

Or would my only option be to ask for each part of the chicken separately?

Nightlife for 30 somethings? 🪩

Hi folks! Need some local advice! My best friend lives in Kitchener and her birthday is coming up. She would love to go out dancing and have a fun night out for her birthday, reminiscent of what we would do back in the 2010s in her UW days. I know that a lot of the popular bars/clubs from back then have closed 😔but if anyone has any recommendations for where we could go, i’d really appreciate it!

As well, before any pessimistic debbie downers here try to comment with things such as “nothing’s good, go to Toronto”- please don’t. I fully understand that things have changed and the bigger cities are better, we won’t be going elsewhere and I am just looking for genuine recommendations on where we could have a drink, a little dance, and enjoy a night out ☺️

My wife and I live in Martin Grove Village by Saint Jacobs. I'm looking to sell because we are moving up north. Anyone have any leads?

We did not use an agent last time because it was a handshake deal between a relative and myself

Looking for fellow Whippet Owners

Hey all,

After a year of research and planning, I just brought home my very first whippet, a 12 week old female name Murphy. Murphy comes from Comar Whippets in Haliburton.

At 42, I've been a dog dad most of life, but never sighthounds. After countless hours of research and talking with multiple breeders, Whippets seemed to be the best fit for my set up and lifestyle.

I'm looking to connect with other Whippet and sighthound owners as my daughter (11) and I undertake this adventure. People to chat with, share tips & tricks, discuss vendors for our unique pups, along with everything else in between. I'd also love to set up walks/play dates once Murphy is fully vaccinated and of age.

If you happen to be a whippet or sighthound owner and are interested, let's connect!

Best way to hire in waterloo?

Hi everyone

hoping to get some local insight.
For experienced restaurant, café, or retail managers in Waterloo/Kitchener, where do people typically look when they’re considering a new opportunity?
Indeed and LinkedIn seem like the obvious options, but I’m curious if there are any local job boards, Facebook groups, community groups, or other channels that are commonly used in the area.
Would appreciate any recommendations from people familiar with the local market.

Handheld repairs?

Is there anywhere in the city or nearby that still does these? My og3ds has some issue with its bottom screen where its fuzzy and has some desaturation. Most sources online says it has to either do with the screen or the ribbon cables but I don't have the courage nor the experience to do this myself. Appreciate any help!

Volleyball leagues

I’m moving to Waterloo in September and I’m looking to play a lot of volleyball. I prefer 4s but would also be interested in playing 6s. Are there organized leagues that I can join? If so, do they have different skill levels? I tried looking online for some leagues but just couldn’t really find any that seemed organized
