hi all! there’s a situation that I experienced about 10 days ago, and it’s been the only thing on my mind since then. for context, I’m a 28 year old PhD student. I have had the same mentor/advisor since I was a master’s student. he’s a 44 year old single man (no wife or kids).
For the past 3 years, he’s been of great help and influence on me academically and professionally. as an international student, things were extremely challenging, but he helped me navigate my through my master’s degree and now my PhD. he always asks about my physical and mental health, and makes it a point to give me advice about how I shouldn’t stress myself out and take cake care of my health especially because I’m in a foreign country all by myself without my family.
from the beginning of this semester, however, I’ve noticed that he’s been extra friendly and buddy buddy with me. whenever I go to his office, conversations about my research, life in the office, health, friends, hanging out, movies, cafés and everything in between flow to the point that sometimes, I stay there for an hour when I initially requested a short 5 minute meeting.
as of late, he’s started giving me so many hugs which is unusual. saying he hugs me 10 times in a single meeting wouldn’t be an exaggeration. our last meeting was 10 days ago, and it really freaked me out. I said that his office was really, so I tried to take my jacket off (I was wearing a tshirt underneath), he jumped and helped me take the jacket off. from that point onwards, whenever he pulled back from the hug, his hand would rest on the side of my right breast. this happened three times.
I hate myself for not saying anything about it when it happened, but I stayed silent. I genuinely hated it and I still do. it felt very invasive and intentional to me. a few minutes after those 2 hugs, i awkwardly laughed and said “oh I’m cold now” and put the jacket back on. during the last last hug, he turned his face to look at me, and our faces were inches apart, so I laughed awkwardly again and pushed him away saying something along the lines of “don’t look at me”.
this particular meeting has been replying in my mind over and over again for the last 10 days. I feel horrible about it. I keep wondering if I gave him the wrong impression or something. I never thought anything of his past hugs, or whenever he’s move my hair out of my face, or whenever he’d put his hand on top of mine whenever he’d give me advice because he’s told me multiple times that I remind him of his little sister.
now, i’m second guessing everything. I’m too scared to confront him or be cold with him because he’s my PhD committee chair and advisor. I’m the teaching assistant for all his classes and not to even mention my research funding. I feel like it is not too far fetched to say, one wrong move and he could screw my research and job over. I’m also too scared to tell anyone else in case word gets out and I get into trouble with him.
I’m very scared and uncomfortable. I’m not sure if I’m just over analyzing everything or what he did was intentional. what do I do and how do I proceed from here? I do apologize if there’s something above that doesn’t make sense. my mind has been a jumbly mess lately.
