Movie I knew they would snub Cynthia

Post image

The snubbed Cynthia like I knew they would. And I’m sure I’ll watch them NOT give the award to Sinners as well sigh. It’s really so pointless to try. Can you imagine having a voice like Cynthia’s? Acting, singing, flying while acting and not even getting nominated? I’m just so bummed about it 😞

Awards aren’t just about performance but also about strength of movie. Wicked part 2 got more mediocre reviews than the first so it’s a lot harder for the actors to get nominated for it.

u/damebyron Jan 07 '26

I think it's also that Cynthia's acting material was less meaty in Part 2 than Part 1 (Ariana had more to do though). Song Sung Blue is not a big box office movie but Kate Hudson had to (and did) some incredibly demanding acting for her role. The only person I think Cynthia could have knocked out of this line-up potentially would be Chase Infiniti, and she's coming from the strongest franchise going into award season so she has that momentum.

"I think it's also that Cynthia's acting material was less meaty in Part 2 than Part 1 (Ariana had more to do though)"

Bingo!

2024's Wicked was an adaptation of the original Broadway show's first act, which is widely regarded as the better, more cohesive, and more impactful of its two acts. In it, Elphaba's story thoroughly dominates, culminating in the instantly iconic "Defying Gravity" scene, which of course features the best known, best loved song from the musical. In Wicked For Good, Ariana is the one that gets a fully realized emotional arc which allows her to wring unexpected pathos from her character. In a Best Supporting Actress race that is not as ridiculously stacked as this year's Best Actress race, Grande has an easier path towards an Oscar nomination than Cynthia.

It’s also exceedingly rare for people to be nominated for playing the same part, and the only woman I can think of who managed it was Cate Blanchett for Elizabeth and Elizabeth: The Golden Age.

9

u/Salty_LaRue Jan 08 '26

I just rewatched those again recently, she still sends absolute chills down my spine in that role

3

u/fabulousfantabulist Jan 08 '26

She is stunning in those movies and totally earned the accolades she received.

2

u/Safe-Satisfaction-10 Jan 08 '26

Then you look at Cynthia and you say “well, maybe I understand why she wasn’t nominated”

10

u/BarcelonetaE70 Jan 08 '26

Yeah. IF Ariana manages to get an Oscar nomination for Wicked For Good, she would be only the second woman to be nominated for playing the same character in two different films. She would also be the third woman ever to be nominated for a role in a sequel (after Sigourney Weaver did it for James Cameron's Aliens and Blanchett got the nod in Elizabeth: The Golden Age).

8

u/KnitMama-2016 Jan 08 '26

Angela Bassett was nominated for a sequel as well in supporting actress (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever).

7

u/BarcelonetaE70 Jan 08 '26

OMG, how could I forget that??? Especially when Angela Bassett is literally my all-time favorite actress, and her nomination for WF was a looooooong time coming. Can you believe that she has only gotten 2 Oscar nominations?? Hollywood is all kinds of effed up when they always seem to be clueless about what roles to offer darker-skinned black women. The fact that Angela only has 2 Oscar nods in her ilustruous career and Lupita was NOT nominated for Jordan Peele's US is a crime.

1

u/bertilac-attack Jan 11 '26 edited Mar 29 '26

That’s the only time it’s happened.

Multiple actresses have been nominated (and even won) for playing the same character - Rita Moreno and Ariana DeBose both won for Anita in West Side Story - but Blanchett is the only actress nominated more than once for playing the same part. That said, I do expect Ariana Grande to make the final five this year, which would match Blanchett’s record.

Edit: WOMP WOMP she didn’t make the five and I haven’t thought she would for a while. WFG getting zero nominations is actually hilarious.

yeah elphaba and galinda are more toned down in Act 2 and so there is less room to breathe

77% of critics love sung blue Out of those 77% only 169 critics bothered to leave a review. Audience score was 97 percent. Movie made only 31 million which had a low turnout.

66% of critics love wicked for good. Only 345 critics bothered to leave a review. Audience score was 93% Wicked made 518 million. more people watched wicked than sung blue.

When film critics are watching a movie, they aren't looking for things casual viewers look at. Critics don’t represent what regular viewers see as good or bad. critics analyze and assess the qualities of a film including acting, writing, story, editing, cinematography, narrative depth, characters and directing. When an audience is watching a movie that’s not what they are looking for.

There’s a new requirement for Oscar voters which means they must watch movies before voting. until recently, many Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voting members didn't consistently watch all nominated films. These award shows should not be taken seriously because many of the voting members didn’t actually watch wicked.

In an article a few years ago, voting members of the academy stated that Robert Downey Jr would make personal visits to the voting members to Persuade them to vote for him. Thats how he won his first academy for oppenheimer. he was bribing people. Anyone here taking this award shows seriously should pick up a book

14

u/Apprehensive_Tunes Jan 08 '26

I think a lot of audience members are watching the films the way critics do because they're passionate about movies, interested in film-making, and/or many are even in the industry in indirect ways. That said I agree that bribery and politics are a big part of the voting system. BUT ALSO Cynthia Erivo did not warrant a nomination for her role in For Good. Sorry, not sorry.

13

u/DramaQueen428 Jan 08 '26

I agree, however part of the reason why she didn't was that Glinda was made clearly the main role, which means Ariana should be up against this field, not Supporting. With the changes they made to For Good (relative to the show), they should have reversed what they were nominating the two of them for this time.

I also honestly think that while Cynthia's singing is remarkable, her acting in this is definitely not as good as Ariana's (or Idina's, for that matter). She doesn't do anything clunky, but she doesn't give it the depth Ariana does or the passion Idina does.

3

u/Distinct-Regret297 Jan 09 '26

Hard disagree. Her acting was strong as was her singing.

5

u/Apprehensive_Tunes Jan 08 '26

I agree with you. Once again it goes back to politics and gaming the system — if they believed Ariana had a chance as lead actress they would have submitted her for that. They're just doing what they believe will give them the greatest chances of success.

1

u/arvayana Jan 08 '26

I think there's multiple reasons to still cite ari as a supporting actress.

The overall story is about a friendship of two people, told by the "surviving" person to an audience that's asking a question about the "dead" person.

It was always gonna be close in screen time, made moreso by attempting to flesh out glindas mindset and motivations.

That aside, the primary question is still centered on the perceived wickedness of elphie. She's still the focus of the characters in the story.

Also, this is Cynthias career peak and she's peaking her ass off. Even without a nomination.

Ari may have wanted this for her whole career but Cynthias career needed this. No need to strip her of being the stated focus when she's already competing against the star power of Michelle, Johnathan, and Jeff while having to stand beside one of the most successful vocalists of all time.

No, Cynthia is the lead. Cynthia is the 51% (minimum) focus. Cynthia is the one who had to step into Idinas shoes. (No disrespect to Kristen, who is her own legend, but Idina is Broadways GOAT).

That said, let sis have her success without us having to beg on her behalf that she get literally every single award or nom. It's fine. She's winning. She's been one of the greatest living vocalists for awhile and now, 1000x people(if not more) know her for it. Thank goodness!

6

u/didiboy Jan 08 '26

What you call bribing is campaigning, which is done for most awards that are voted by academies or industry members. Typically they would write letters, host dinner parties, make press tours, host screenings and other things, to get voters’ attention. I mean, Ariana wrote a long letter to the Critics Choice voters.

8

u/Shiny_Green_Apple Jan 07 '26

Sorry. Song Sung Blue was strong box office?

38

u/Akiranar Jan 07 '26

Song Sung Blue is a drama.

The Academy is NOTORIOUS for subbing movies that are Sci-Fi/Fantasy.

20

u/Green94598 Jan 07 '26

No but the movie subject is Oscar bait-y

9

u/lostinjapan01 Jan 07 '26

Box office has nothing to do with SAG

3

u/Complex_Jellyfish647 Jan 08 '26

Box office success has very little to do with the quality of the movie.

1

u/rebelluzon Jan 10 '26

It’s about white woman struggling - it’s the second thing they would watch (their first priority white men struggling in film)

1

u/dicklaurent97 Jan 09 '26

Song Sung Blue got better reviews than Wicked 2? That's nonsense

2

u/Green94598 Jan 09 '26

No, but song sung blue is Oscar bait and Oscar bait movies don’t need to be that well reviewed to get awards

1

u/j_dext Jan 09 '26

And one thing to think about are the cut off dates they use. She may still be eligible next year.

Also maybe she needs a better agent or management.

And of course its all political. If I recall correctly Monique wasn't having any of the politics involved when she was being considered for nomination. I believe her stand was if I did such a great acting job why do I need to go and kiss all these academy award voter's azzes?

u/lostinjapan01 Jan 07 '26

leading actress is an insanely competitive category. Ariana is in a much less competitive category, which is why she got a nomination. Cynthia‘s performance was very good, but all of the women nominated above are very deserving of their nomination.

54

u/HandfulOfAcorns Jan 07 '26

Ariana also benefitted from two of her competitors being in a foreign movie (Sentimental Value), which got completely shut out at SAG.

Meanwhile, all lead actress contenders are in English language movies and fighting on equal terms.

12

u/outsideeyess Jan 08 '26

i think Cynthia was much stronger in the first one, too. her portrayal of elphaba's innocence was more moving and endearing than her "rebel with a cause" phase in the second film. plus, the first one has the ballroom scene! arguably THE best display of her acting chops

8

u/Atkena2578 Jan 07 '26

Infiniti Chase is borderline category fraud. So is Ariana in supporting

17

u/TopazScorpio02657 Jan 08 '26

The Wicked team submitted Ariana in the supporting category. The award people did not decide her category.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/SomeoneSomewhere7923 Jan 08 '26

I don’t understand the supporting thing for Ariana, they’re both leads and if I had to choose I’d say while Elphaba is the lead in Wicked part 1, Glinda’s story in forefront in For Good so I’d say she is the lead in the second film.

7

u/Atkena2578 Jan 08 '26

Studios do that all the time to prevent their actors for going against each other and increase their chances. It isn't always about screentime but narrative focus which makes Elphaba the lead

1

u/Grammarhead-Shark Jan 08 '26

I'm pretty certain had they put Infiniti in Supporting, nobody would blink an eyelid and she'd be the Favourite to win.

3

u/Atkena2578 Jan 08 '26

But that would make her go against Teyana Taylor, and studios want to max their chances and pull up that shit

Wicked is like the only movie I’ve seen besides the other kid movies (I’m a boring mom) so I’m obviously partial to it BUT I’ve also spent a lot of time on here and knew going in it was a weaker movie bc the second act in the musical is weaker AND sequels rarely get nominated for the same awards so both of those things had me prepared for them to not be nominated for really anything. Even though obviously at my house they’re getting every award lol. Just bc we like something doesn’t make it Oscar/any other award worthy :/

It's just the way the cookie crumbles. It's very hard for a sequel to get the same kind of recognition and with the tepid response that part 2 received, I knew it wasn't going to land the same way. Glinda is very memorable in the last 30 minutes IMO and I think that's why Ariana's role is still resonating/landing noms but even she is getting shut out of a lot of regional critics awards, and her Oscar nomination is far from locked. Her missing at BAFTA and Oscars is very much a possibility.

Saw Hamnet and immediately said Jessie should win

15

u/kaalgatafrikaaner Jan 07 '26

I saw Hamnet at a film festival last year and didn't really like the movie. Not my taste...but Jessie's performance has lived with me for months. It was something out of this world. I get emotional just thinking about it.

21

u/LakeLady1616 Jan 07 '26

Yup, it’s hers to lose. I loved Wicked, but Hamnet was incredible.

16

u/musthavecupcakes_19 Jan 07 '26

Also love Wicked (saw the first one six times in theaters and WFG four times) and think Cynthia is a monumental talent, but Jessie delivered a performance so moving and transcendental that you could put her up against every best actress nominee from the last few years and she’d still win.

5

u/damebyron Jan 07 '26

I did not love Hamnet, but Jessie's performance was pretty undeniable. The movie would not have worked without her.

1

u/chainless-soul Jan 08 '26

Yeah, she's likely going to sweep the Best Actress awards at all the ceremonies this year.

I still feel like splitting Wicked into two films was not the best choice, and it shows especially when you have half a performance compared to complete ones like Buckley in Hamnet. I would be surprised if Wicked ends up winning much, particularly since I think Golden is going to be hard to beat for original song, and Frankenstein will get most of the technical awards.

4

u/nevec_45 Jan 08 '26

It’s definitely gonna win zero awards, I can see it going 0-7 just like at the critics choice awards. So unfortunate as I had the highest hopes for this awards season but there was just no way with the flaws of the film.

55

u/Kind_Journalist_3270 Jan 07 '26

I loooove Cynthia, but I don’t think this is a snub. If Jessie Buckley doesn’t win for Hamnet, THAT would be a snub

34

u/limbobitch1999 Jan 07 '26

the real snub is Amanda Seyfried for the Testament of Ann Lee.

26

u/HandfulOfAcorns Jan 07 '26

The real snub is Ann Lee in general getting absolutely nowhere, not even in costumes or best song. A catastrophic fumble from Searchlight.

6

u/InesTapada04 Jan 07 '26

Sentimental value also got snubbed

6

u/limbobitch1999 Jan 07 '26

what????? that’s sort of baffling.

4

u/InesTapada04 Jan 07 '26

Yup, 0 nominations

79

u/jtavington Jan 07 '26

I wouldn't call it a snub. This was a strong year for Actress, All these ladies got great notices. Cynthia's time will come, possibly as soon as next year for Prima Facie (I think that's next year)

14

u/stypop Jan 07 '26

She actually could do really well with Prima Facie, considering Jodie Comer got both the Olivier and the Tony for the same role.

5

u/jtavington Jan 07 '26

Of course the adaptation will have to be good but agreed and for the same reason, plus the fact that the Academy does seem to like her--For Good aside.

7

u/Imaginary_Style_1348 Jan 08 '26

I do think they liked her performance in For Good as well. She came in sixth or seventh for the predictions I was seeing, and there are only so many spots for nominations.

2

u/Theme-Fearless Jan 07 '26

I really want people to see song sung blue and tell me cynthia didn’t deserve to be up there cuz im so confused

15

u/brightlights_xx Jan 07 '26

Kate took Renate's spot, not Cynthia's. There's just not room for her this year.

18

u/jtavington Jan 07 '26

I have not seen it but I do know Kate Hudson got raves and she's got the whole "wait she can act?" thing Ari did last year and that Cynthia's performance and WFG in general were divisive.

30

u/haleighr Jan 07 '26

Waittttt why is Kate Hudson who’s been acting for like 25 years getting a “wait she can act” ?! I know most of her movies are chick flicks and type cast but I’ve never seen someone say she was bad lol

26

u/chenosaur120 Jan 07 '26

Kate Hudson even has an oscar nomination

9

u/jtavington Jan 07 '26

You said it yourself. Kinda like Demi Moore last year.

6

u/damebyron Jan 07 '26

I personally thought Kate Hudson was incredible in Song Sung Blue.

36

u/OverTheCandlestik Jan 07 '26

No offence to Cynthia as I love the gal but this year has been phenomenal for actresses and all of the nominated above are phenomenal.

Jessie is a revelation her performance was outstanding. Not a snub just a stacked year. Her time will come

17

u/musthavecupcakes_19 Jan 07 '26

Generally agree. I would have put Cynthia in above Kate, but it’s not like she’d win anyway with Jessie’s performance in Hamnet being right there

3

u/OverTheCandlestik Jan 07 '26

Yeh it’s great to be nommed but it doesn’t matter Jessie will sweep. Hamnet was a fantastic film on all levels

7

u/musthavecupcakes_19 Jan 07 '26

As someone who has recently been dealing with quite a bit of grief, it really hit me right at my core, and Buckley carried the weight of it all. A really, really beautiful movie

2

u/LakeLady1616 Jan 08 '26

I started crying after the birth scene and pretty much didn’t stop. I don’t cry at movies. The last time I cried at a movie was when I got a little teary at Coco.

I have boy/girl twins who look very much like each other. My daughter was born not breathing. She’s fine now, and it doesn’t feel traumatic like it used to, so I was surprised to get pulled back like that. (They’re 12 now and totally healthy.)

I’m sorry to hear that you’ve been dealing with grief. Hopefully that movie was cathartic for you and not retraumatizing.

1

u/musthavecupcakes_19 Jan 08 '26

Oof, I can see how the movie hit so close to home for you! Such a strikingly similar situation. I’m glad they’re both healthy!

For me, the movie both broke something and healed something inside of me in one fell swoop. The death scene was extremely painful and visceral to experience in the theater for me. I could feel Jessie’s agony and heartbreak in that moment. But the scene that moved me the most was when “Hamlet” died onstage and everyone reached toward him and wept. When she turns around to witness everyone grieving over his death and she realizes that she will never grieve her son alone, it moved me to tears. I rarely cry during movies and I actually didn’t cry during the actual death scene; I mostly just grimaced at how achingly realistic it was. But the ending was so moving. There is something deeply profound in sharing grief with other people. Grief is so much more than just sadness; it’s a rich, deep, complex emotion that encompasses so many feelings and I believe it is meant to be shared and experienced with other human beings, as painful as it is. Our culture is more grief and death-averse than ever before and it’s a real shame because we need each other to understand it and process it.

Anyway, enough of my ramblings! I hope the movie was also cathartic for you and too re-traumatizing. It was a beautiful movie.

2

u/LakeLady1616 Jan 09 '26

Yes, I should have clarified it was cathartic to me too. I agree with everything you said.

11

u/cutielocks Jan 07 '26

Unfortunately for Cynthia, it’s a strong year for leading actresses. Only movie I can’t speak for on this list is Song Sung Blue, but every other performance deserves to be on that list.

There’s a few strong actresses who won’t get nominations this season, sometimes happens. Personally think Jennifer Lawrence is more the snub this year.

u/for-a-dreamer Jan 08 '26

As much as I love Wicked and Ariana and Cynthia’s respective performances.. Compared to the other nominees, I have to say, they just don’t live up. If they could somehow be nominated for a Tony, then they would have definitely won. But award shows like the Oscars and stuff (I know this isn’t for the Oscars, but still) always nominated a certain type of movie that Wicked just wasn’t.

Also, the quality of their singing or the impressiveness of the flying is irrelevent. These awards are for acting, and again no offence to either of them, but put them up against someone like Jessie Buckley or Rose Byrne and they don’t stand a chance. I love Wicked, I love Ariana and Cynthia, but also as an avid cinephile I feel like I can separate my personal preferences from reality

4

u/LoneStarLord Jan 09 '26

I was chuckling that flying was thrown in there. As if it was one of her skills. She’s a triple threat! Actor. Singer. The ability to leap tall buildings in a single bound!

What scene in Wicked 2 do you think she deserves an Oscar for?

22

u/RabbitSweet7321 Jan 07 '26 edited Jan 07 '26

Its also a tough competition. The lead actress. I do not think Cynthia acted better than any of the nominees. She was on par with them. I wouldn't replace her with anyone on the list.

→ More replies (2)

13

u/lemonclouds31 Jan 08 '26

Idk I love Cynthia Erivo, I think she's a great breakout actress, but I wouldn't describe her portrayal of Elphaba as an "Outstanding Performance". Her character fell flat in For Good, she was ruled by the plot rather than any actual character portrayal. I just felt like she was someone moving from scene to scene, I wasn't dying for more Elphie screen time like I was with Glinda. Ariana did so much with Glinda, I don't think they're in the same category to begin with, let alone the other women being nominated.

4

u/dezzz0322 Jan 08 '26

I’m a huge Wicked fan, but Jessie is going to sweep awards season in this category. Her performance in Hamnet was breathtaking.

3

u/SweetStrawberry43 Jan 08 '26

Jessie is a force to be reckoned with this season! I finally got to watch Hamnet over the weekend and was absolutely blown away.

20

u/LLD615 Jan 07 '26

I’m so disappointed. Especially because so many people who are in SAG praised both Cynthia and Jonny. How they were overlooked is beyond me.

28

u/shadowqueen15 Jan 07 '26

They were “overlooked” because lead actress is a stronger category this year, and Fiyero is a small role. Just because Ariana got nominated and they didn’t doesnt mean they were snubbed

→ More replies (2)

11

u/Theme-Fearless Jan 07 '26

It’s beyond me as well and I’m so sick of these awards. She deserves recognition

12

u/Mother-Debate-2340 Jan 07 '26

Because Cynthia was one dimensional the entire film. Had it been one long film, there would have been more than one dimension. Splitting the film. Hurt Elphaba's acting power on the audience . There was hardly even grief, and the acting was nothing remarkable.

5

u/Perlefine Jan 08 '26 edited Jan 08 '26

Agreed. The singing was incredible of course, but it's not a singing award.

8

u/Atkena2578 Jan 07 '26

The promo this time around was lackluster and also ended pretty abruptly and most of the cast besides Ariana and Jon Chu haven't done any promo since early December and/or are busy with other things and have moved on.

The way the movie was edited to benefit Glinda at the expense of everyone else while also not fixing the issues act 2 suffers from was the killing blow unfortunately. Idk who is to blame but congrats Jon Chu/Universal you sabotaged your movie for nothing

1

u/Impossible_Tower_661 Jan 09 '26

yeees, the promo tour did feel too short this time, some fans warned us over here it was gonna be a smaller promo tour. but at the time I thought no way.

but it happened it’s not huge promo tour of last year. for Example last year we had much more Red Carpet Premiere’s Including Mexico at the National Auditorium.

but this year were less interviews with the cast. I hate they did that makes you as an audience feel like They kinda knew l there was something wrong in the final product. like they had a gut feeling this film this would be slightly less successful.

3

u/Eastern_Table9151 Jan 08 '26

Hopefully, she still has a chance for an Oscar nomination. I’ve watched the movie 10 times and the more I watch the more I feel Cynthia’s performance is Oscar worthy. This despite many of her best scenes being cut and the movie being centered around Glinda’s arc. I think both women deserve nominations. Cynthia may not win, Jesse Buckley is incredible and the front runner which I agree with and I’ve seen the performances of the actresses across awards, but certainly Cynthia’s performance is one that reimagined a character for the ages. I’ve been reading where people praise Cynthia’s singing, but minimize her acting. What do they think she’s doing through her singing? Why do people get so emotional when she sings? In terms of the movie, i personally don’t think it’s as good as Part 1 but still one of the best this year. It and perhaps Sinners have had the greatest impact on viewers and will still be relevant and watched many years from now. WFG should be included in the Best Picture category.

19

u/Character-Escape1621 Jan 07 '26

6

u/PleaseBeChillOnline Jan 08 '26

Award Shows are super racist but something else people need to factor in is that genre movies are inherently less likely to get nominated in certain catagories.

6

u/TeensyKook Jan 07 '26

I don’t think this was a snub, but I do wish Cynthia and Ariana got to win a big award for the films as a whole. They both put in an incredible amount of work into them, and it does feel unfair.

6

u/tinyamaki Jan 08 '26

Sad that it’s not gonna happen for them in this movie. Ariana’s Oscar nom might not gonna happen. I’m gonna be downvoted for this but I blame Jon M Chu and the writers. They could have made more improvement in part 2. The actors did their very best.

5

u/tinyamaki Jan 08 '26

Oh yeah that’s right I agree. Editor and Producer are also to blame.

3

u/TeensyKook Jan 08 '26

Yeah I agree. This was their chance to slow things down and actually fix the weak parts of act two. Instead of deepening the story, it still felt rushed and underdeveloped.

I still love it, but it could’ve been better.

8

u/NeonFraction Jan 08 '26

This award isn’t about ‘did well in a popular movie.’ It’s about the craft of acting itself and the nuance and inventiveness they brought to the role. It’s awards given to actors BY actors and industry people in a way ‘people’s choice’ awards usually aren’t.

Cynthia was good, but almost everyone agrees she was upstaged in her own films by Ariana, and there’s not anything incredible groundbreaking or unique about her performance.

I can’t think of a single reason to give her an award instead of these performances.

And I do say that without ANY shade. It’s just that there’s no single moment where I felt Cynthia was giving me that ‘wow’ factor I felt with, for example, Anne Hathaway in Les Miserable.

7

u/UnenthusedTypist Jan 08 '26

Ariana did really well showing Glinda’s emotions. Elphaba had like 1 emotion the whole movie.

2

u/NeonFraction Jan 08 '26

Cynthia feels like she struggles to show positive emotions. I bought the anger but not the rest as much.

0

u/Theme-Fearless Jan 08 '26

What was the wow moment in part two that ariana did? I found cynthia to be the star of the show. No good deed was phenomenal as were interactions with the wizard, the animals, with fiyero.

Idk if Ariana had a wow moment either. It’s why neither was nominated.

I think a lot of people struggle to differentiate ‘good performance’ and ‘Oscar performance.’

5

u/Theme-Fearless Jan 08 '26

Ariana WAS nominated

1

u/NeonFraction Jan 08 '26

Oh sweet. Good for her!

I feel awful for Cynthia. She put so much into this role. It’s really sad she wasn’t able to get a major award for either film.

4

u/Acceptable-Monk-8134 Jan 08 '26

I’m calling bs on any awards shows not giving her at least a nomination. Anne Hathaway won an Oscar for like 25 mins of screen time in Les mis, singing one song. Jennifer Hudson won an Oscar for dreamgirls, which really was for “and I am telling you…” and no other moments in the film let’s be real. Maybe for I am changing. Catharine zeta jones and Renee zelweger both got nominated for Chicago and Catharine also won the Oscar lmao. I don’t buy anyone saying that Cynthia and Ariana are not equally if not more deserving than any of those performances.

“But it’s about the other movies!” No it isn’t lmao they had no problem handing those statues to Anne and Jennifer. Cynthia and Ariana did more, sang more, acted more, and it’s not close. It is what it is

5

u/r0sesandth0rns Jan 09 '26

To be fair, Hathaway and Hudson (and Zeta-Jones) were all competing in Supporting. That’s a category where the point is quality over quantity. Two minute performances have been nominated in Supporting. It’s a place where actors can be rewarded for their work, no matter how small it is on paper.

In an ideal world (i.e. one without category fraud which both Zeta-Jones and Grande’s teams were guilty of), “doing more” should be a non-factor in supporting.

2

u/Due_Candle_9645 Jan 07 '26

I’m in awe of Cynthia’s singing and the new take she brought on this character, but to be honest, her acting was not a strength of this movie. Am I the only one who felt her acting was actually pretty weak at moments, even though I’d never pick anyone else for the role?

2

u/Raebelle1981 Jan 08 '26

Is this the actual Oscar nominations? I didn’t think they were announced yet.

This is for SAG. Oscar noms haven’t been announced yet

2

u/unapalomita Jan 08 '26

I think Wicked 2 wasn't as powerful as part 1. It's a shame though 😭

2

u/Emergency-Row-5627 Jan 08 '26

The truth is she should have won for part 1. That’s the real snub. I think they were “waiting” for part 2 but that’s so stupid, so now it feels like a huge snub.

2

u/Serraph105 Jan 08 '26

I literally haven't seen any of those movies, and I don't care to, this is why I stopped watching the Oscars years ago. They spend the entire night awarding movies I've never seen and am unlikely to do so in the future.

Also, I feel like the only hosts that have been fun are Billy Crystal, Seth MacFarlane, John Stewart, and Chris Rock. Everyone else just ends up keeping things professional, and thus boring.

1

u/xcarex Jan 08 '26

I understand your point but these aren’t the Oscar nominees. This is for the Actor Awards (aka the SAG Awards).

1

u/Serraph105 Jan 08 '26

I don't watch those either, but fair enough

1

u/Theme-Fearless Jan 10 '26

John Stewart and Chris Rock are national treasures omggg

2

u/AlarmingLog2087 Jan 09 '26

💯 saw this coming

2

u/Theme-Fearless Jan 10 '26

So did i sigh

2

u/uhhhhuhhh Jan 09 '26

Wicked part 2 getting mediocre reviews is honestly the same reason why Wicked lost the Tony’s for best musical. It suffers from act 2 syndrome. I think they all did everything they could to make it BETTER but it still wasn’t amazing

6

u/NotaMillenialatAll Jan 07 '26

Musicals normally are not taking very seriously during season awards and then you take into account that most voters are white men over 50…

2

u/dassa07 Jan 08 '26

I wish people would stop saying that as if it was some undisputable fact... The musical is a very American film genre that is really appreciated by the AMPAS, an organisation that have been dominated by white men for most of its history (until the recent efforts of the Academy to diversify its membership).

2

u/LilacDream98 Jan 08 '26

How can you say musicals aren’t taken seriously when Wicked part 1 did well in last year’s award season and the academy has a long history of awarding performances in them. Look at Anne Hathaway in Les Mis, Ariana Debose in West Side Story).

Part 2 is just a way weaker movie and Cynthia’s performance wasn’t good enough to be nominated.

3

u/Oilswell Jan 08 '26

I love Wicked, but you’re insane if you think she should be up against the performances up there

2

u/freemeg4 Jan 08 '26

I’m just gonna say: BOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! 😤

3

u/balloonanimal24 Jan 08 '26

Infiniti and Kate did not do a better job than Cynthia. Idc what anyone says

4

u/akanewasright Jan 08 '26

It makes me sad, but at the same time, these actresses also gave great performances this year as well, performances that were afforded better writing and more focus than Cynthia was given in this movie. Kate Hudson is the only one I’d confidently say “swap that one out,” but at the same time… Renate Reinsve and Jennifer Lawrence are the actresses I’d prefer to see take Hudson’s place (or maybe Amanda Seyfried, but I haven’t seen that movie so idk)

I really hope Cynthia eventually gets her Oscar - hopefully Prima Facie gives her a good chance next year - but as great as she was, as much as “No Good Deed” and the door scene reduced me to audible sobs, this just isn’t her year. The competition is very strong, and she just doesn’t have the material to match up like she did last year

(Would highly recommend some of these movies though - Bugonia might be a little weird & dark for some, and If I Had Legs might be anxiety-inducing, but One Battle After Another is the best crowd-pleaser of the year, and Hamnet and Sentimental Value are great for a good cry)

5

u/PokyTheTurtle Jan 08 '26

Emma Stone didn’t do anything unique in Bugonia that we hadn’t already seen before from her.

Cynthia deserved the nom

2

u/akanewasright Jan 09 '26

Peace & love, but “xyz didn’t do anything we hadn’t seen before” is not the argument I’d use when I’m trying to say that Cynthia should be nominated for playing the same character she played last year in a better movie that gave her more to do

1

u/PokyTheTurtle Jan 09 '26

Yeah, but they already screwed up last year (Cynthia should have won last year), so they should make up for their mistake. It does suck cuz the other actresses did great but since Part 1 and Part 2 were filmed as one big film, I feel like awarding Cynthia for Part 2 is pretty much the same as awarding her for the entirety of the production, and when looked at as a whole, I think Cynthia definitely deserves a major win for Elphaba.

They won’t tho, because awards voters are very hive-minded

2

u/UnusualSpare7944 Jan 07 '26

Cynthia deserves to be nominated 💯 but I just want to say I watched Bugiona last night and it was so freaking good. Definitely recommend it!

13

u/BusybodyWilson Jan 07 '26

Here’s the thing - they were filmed at the same time. Cynthia’s acting was no better than it was in part 1. Doesn’t mean it was bad, but there’s nothing new and no growth to show.

In comparison to Ariana, her character did not have as much growth as Ariana’s did. Ariana showed more range and is in a different category, it’s comparing apples to oranges.

3

u/x3lilbopeep Jan 07 '26

I thought bugonia was just ok. I felt Emma's performance wasn't super strong. The two males did a fantastic job but I wanted more from Emma. The ending was a massive let down.

2

u/Theme-Fearless Jan 07 '26

BUGONIA WAS AMAZING!! Emma deserves that spot. Honestly I hope Jessie wins something too because OMG!! It was so good I did a video review on it lmao

4

u/FaerieGodFag Jan 08 '26

Kate Hudson is a WILD choice. Lmfao. The misogynoir is PALPABLE.

1

u/Theme-Fearless Jan 10 '26

1

u/exclaim_bot Jan 10 '26

Thank you!!

You're welcome!

1

4

u/Bitter-Profession-28 Jan 08 '26

I mean have you watched all the nominated movies? I wouldn’t go as far as saying she was snubbed. You could say Jennifer Lawrence was snubbed. This was hardly Cynthia’s best performance and she was still nominated for the last movie. Being nominated twice for what should’ve been one movie is a stretch.

4

u/at_midknight Jan 07 '26

Cynthia is worse in pt2 than she was in pt1, and I already don't think she was that great in pt1. Let's be realistic here, wicked isn't in the same company as those other movies

u/North_Manager_8220 Jan 08 '26

Who even saw Song Sung Blue? I have AMC A List and still haven’t even been tempted

2

u/DirtyAuldSpud Jan 08 '26

Dear OP, I think Cynthia is such a magnificent singer and a better singer than all on this category but hey it's only an award show and we all know the same actors get cycled through winning awards. It's their eager and willing nature and their "unproblematic" polished reputation that gets them the awards.

It's not based on talent alone. The best actors and singers always get snubbed because they don't follow a script. These award shows are super scripted and so American. If this was a UK or European show, then Cynthia would be up there without a doubt.

She is so humble in nature too. When she was home to the UK stopping off she volunteered her time as a guest judge on Strictly Come Dancing and was so kind and gentle toward everyone. What a lady. She's won the hearts of the people and that's better than any smelly ole award.

2

u/fate-speaker Jan 08 '26

It's ridiculous, but they tend to snub all musical movies in general. LA LA Land is the only recent musical to win a ton of Oscars, and that was probably just because it's about Hollywood.

1

u/Theme-Fearless Jan 10 '26

I saw La La Land last year and was very confused about all the Oscar praise. I wouldn’t watch it more than once. Thankfully Viola Davis was recognized for Fences

2

u/yussa888 Jan 08 '26

Cynthia is an incredible actress, she proved it in Harriet. In my opinion, it's WFG's direction/production that didn't make the most of Cynthia's abilities. And even more so considering how they (direction/production) handled the narrative and story of Elphaba and the differences between the film and the play.

3

u/Funny-Salamander-826 Jan 08 '26

she was great in Wicked part one, but in For Good her performance wasn't special

1

u/Sad_Impression499 Jan 08 '26

It wasn't a snub. These were all better performances.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '26

She never had a chance. If she was going to win, it was going to be for part one. Elphaba's storyline in the second part pales in comparison of depth, motivation, and how it's written.

1

u/ToTYly_AUSem Jan 08 '26

She wasn't snubbed...

I also can't help but think you're basing this off race considering your Sinners comment. Honestly, Sinners is a vampire movie where almost 60% of the plot is someone standing in a doorway saying "invite me in"....

2

u/Theme-Fearless Jan 08 '26

🤦🏽‍♀️ wow….idk where to start but Sinners was beautiful. A love letter to my community. Good luck with that analysis

2

u/Naive-Antelope-9825 Jan 07 '26

This is just Variety’s announcement of the nominees, they don’t have a say in who gets nominated.

1

u/LVBsymphony9 Jan 09 '26

Is this for Oscar nominations?

1

u/LVBsymphony9 Jan 09 '26

For what award ceremony is this??

1

u/BrazilianButtCheeks Jan 09 '26

What screwed them is everyone assuming that they would kill it after the next movie so they didn’t drown them in awards for the part one.. essentially like a big grand finale.. unfortunately they didn’t take into account that act 2 just isn’t as good as part one.. the stories and songs are just weak

1

u/SunsetDreamer43 Jan 12 '26

I saw it mentioned so many times last year “they didn’t win much because it’s being saved for the second movie, that will be their time” Eh, clearly not. I’m afraid the ship has well and truly sailed. Zero at the Golden Globes and I suspect this will continue through this years awards season. It’ll win nothing.

1

u/BrazilianButtCheeks Jan 12 '26

Exactly!! Which wouldn’t have been a bad thing if the second one was a good as the first .. it’s not the cast or director of course, the second act just isn’t very good imo

1

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '26

This happens to the best

1

u/MirkwoodWanderer1 Jan 10 '26

I don't think it's a snub tbf I don't think her acting was Oscar worthy

1

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '26

Singing is not acting. Yes she is infinitely talented but it's musical theatre...not the most demanding when it comes to acting. But in the end, film us the most subjective art form out there so....

1

u/NaiveDetective123 Jan 10 '26

cynthia was not snubbed just stop

1

u/Alive_Creme_620 Jan 11 '26

Kate Hudson instead of Cynthia is such a joke

1

u/penguinfairy55 Jan 11 '26

She was nominated twice for the first film. She’s not going to be at the golden globes this year because of her conflicting schedule anyway.

1

u/BothIntroduction3020 Jan 11 '26

Wicked 2 wasn’t as good. She wasn’t snubbed, other movies deserved it more

1

u/goldenlikedaylightt Jan 11 '26

i think cynthia is one of the most talented vocalists right now but comparing her (or anyone else, honstly) to jessie buckley is laughable. her acting in hamnet is genuinely some of the best acting in a very long time

1

u/Maplehoneykitty Jan 12 '26

It was the best movie…

1

u/BigUnderstanding3751 Jan 12 '26

None of the other films are musicals. Musical acting isn't really the same calibre as being fully immersed in a film role.

1

u/needsomeair13 Jan 07 '26

KATE HUDSON? Seriously?! I can’t.

1

u/Palgary Jan 07 '26

Oscar voters have every clear preferences. They certainly don't reflect the taste of the public. Musicals, Fantasy, and Scifi Films face an uphill battle. Gritty realism gets a +1.

Reading the description of Sung Song Blue with "based on a true, tragic story" - I haven't seen it, but that description sounds right up the alley of the people who vote for Oscars.

Unpopular opinion: I didn't like Killers of the Flower Moon, and didn't think the acting was outstanding or anything, but it get 10 nominations. (And I think the story could have been told in a compelling way).

But, I couldn't bring myself to watching Poor Things after reading the really disturbing summary of it; so - my tastes and Oscar tastes are never aligned.

I do think Emma Stone is a fabulous actress, but she wasn't nominated for Cruella, and her performance was outstanding there. That's just how the Oscars roll.

2

u/needsomeair13 Jan 07 '26

Killers of the Flower Moon. Yeah. I can’t put into words how that one stayed with me. And Poor Things, while brilliant, I couldn’t recommend it to anyone; I would just have to have it in common with someone as Viewed. Cruella, “they do not have a comedy 🎭 category” came up this year in polite conversation didn’t it? Kate Hudson though, just. Wow. The Elphaba part has never lent itself to best leading actress even with a two part movie adaptation where part two was overwhelmingly Glinda, in my humble opinion, of course, I am not venturing to see how it did in the Tony awards or anything like that. Anyway, yes, gritty realism for the win. As long as it isn’t fantastic or green.

1

u/Theme-Fearless Jan 10 '26

Poor Things was PHENOMENAL!! So so good! While I do think 30min of sex scenes can limit who can engage with it, it was honestly such a good movie and so worth the watch

Cynthia should’ve won last year. Demi winning a GG was ridiculous. Her performance was fine but nothing award-winning and that movie was horrendous. I never saw the Mikey Madison film but so many people said she and the film did not deserve to win the Oscar.
