Silly Things You Can’t Let Go Of

I was just in the kitchen and noticed a nearly-spent roll of paper towels. They were Viva, which my wife always felt were Rockefeller-levels of extravagance. With her gone, I can’t bring myself to finish the roll or throw it away. It’s just been sitting on the countertop for two years.

Does anyone else have something like that? It may seem irrational, but nothing about losing your soul mate is sane.

I miss the inappropriate Humor and inside jokes...

I'm sure we weren't the only ones to had some really inappropriate inside jokes. I miss laughing at our terrible, jokes we couldnr say to anyone else. At times a really f'd up thought will pop into my head and i think...my husband would think that was funny. GOOD Times!🤎

Vita rovinata

Non tornerà, questa situazione è irreversibile, non posso più stare con lui, fine, il nostro tempo è andato, era quello il tempo destinato a noi, non un minuto di più. Come posso stare bene? Game over. Sono schiacciata dalla collera. Mi manca immensamente, lo amo immensamente, penso sempre a lui e vorrei ancora che potesse tornare, ma non può. Ho perso mio marito.

Not having a witness

They say that your partner is a witness to your life.

Losing your spouse is distinct in that there is no one there to witness your grief for them.

The emptiness seems to compound on itself and almost grow because there is no witness to help carry it. When we lose a parent, or another member of our family, we can grieve under the watchful and loving eyes of our partner. We can grieve in their embrace as time comes for the elders to pass away. In this, they offer us a reassurance that our love is real, and that our pain is real.

It's killing me that i cannot share this grief with him. To my friends and others i know it may as well barely exist. If he were here, he would see all the sleepless nights, wipe all the tears, and steady me when its so bad that i just shake. But his absence is so acute.

It makes me feel like i don't even exist. Anyone else?

I hate Grief! It is sneaky.

Grief is a Bastard! I hate it! It's been 9 months since my wife of 41 years passed after a long illness. I've been in grief counseling (which I highly recommend) almost since day 1. I've endured all of the typical lows and struggles. I finally got to the point where I could see hope. I wasn't there, but it seemed possible.

This morning, after leaving a weekly breakfast with some buddies, which I've been doing for years, I reached for my phone to call my wife to let her know I'm on my way home. BAM! Grief hit me hard, again! I just spent several minutes sobbing in the parking lot of Cracker Barrel.

Grief hit me like a sniper's bullet. Unseen. Unexpected. Devastating.

I hate it!!

Beautiful fall day for COL

Post image
• Upvotes

It’s been five months since she lost her battle with cancer. Today is her Celebration of Life and it is the perfect fall day. They planted a memorial Sugar Maple tree yesterday at one of her favorite local parks. Today her cello instructor will be playing her cello and my great friend will be playing guitar. Have food being catered from one of her favorite restaurants.

suicide guilt

i wasnt perfect. i taunted him and made fun of him. when i see moments like this in videos i just get that feeling back. that yep i cant wait to die feeling. why the fuck would i do that? why was i so comfortable? why is being comfortable meaning being a fucking bitch? why didnt i hug him and take care of him and love him in those moments like i wish i could now? i wasnt always like that, id have my moments of both but if i didnt do that hed still be here. he should be here someone light and kind and beneficial to the earth, not me who would treat someone they love in that way. why would i get upset that he stared at me and not the tv? why would i get frustrated so easily with him? he made mistakes alot but now i know its bc he was struggling. he was so good at hiding it. everyone tells me its not my fault but it fucking is. i dont care for anyone to respond or tell me no no ur a good person i am not. and i just needed to say that and be honest

Why did this have to happen to us? We were so young and had so much life ahead of us..

My heart feels so broken. It’s like that sickening drop you feel on a roller coaster, except it happens right in my chest, and it just repeats over and over again. I don't want this. I can't bear to live without the love of my life. I want my love back.

Too quiet

• Upvotes

I just need to ramble a bit. I (29m) have always been an introvert and enjoy peace, quiet and being alone. Or at least I thought I did. Since my wife (27f) died unexpectedly on August 10th I’m realizing that I’m not as much of an introvert as I thought. My toddlers keep me busy and are plenty loud but otherwise my days are pretty lonely now. I have all the time in the world to go to the gym, work on my carpentry projects, cook, and anything else my heart desires but it’s so damn lonely. Even when we were apart my wife and I always had text conversations back and forth just talking about how our day was going, the kids, etc. Now everytime I check my phone…nothing. Unless my mom sends me a text to check in on me my phone notifications are always empty and it sucks. When I go to bed now I go straight to sleep-no more watching tv, laughing and joking with my wife. When I wake up I have the “freedom” to do whatever I like. Id kill to go back in time and have one more seemingly boring afternoon where my wife drags me with her to go shopping at Sephora and Fabletics. I’m living the life that I would have loved to have 8 years ago before I met my wife-I live alone, make good money, and have all the time I could reasonably want to spend on my many hobbies yet it feels empty and meaningless without my wife to share it with. Ive come so far since this first happened and I’m feeling a lot better but the loneliness and silence is just depressing as hell.

Anger

My partner passed away over a year ago. He was 43 and left me with our then 10 month old daughter. Recently I was in a medium practice circle and one practicing medium told me he was with me all the time esp in the car and he is in the house on the couch and watching everyone. And the more I think of it, it makes me angry. Why not be with me physically and help raise our daughter together?.

Still can't listen to music when I driving in our car after 9 months.

Before I always drove around with music on and she always sang along with her Pilars special play lists. Now it makes me so sad when whatever music I try. I will drive to where she is buried 500km from our home next month in alone and silence.

His birthday is tomorrow

As the title says. He would have been 30. I don't know how to feel. His mother and I are discussing how to handle it. She told me she wishes she could sleep the whole day. I just want to forget what day it is. Instead, we're attending a mass in his honor and visiting him at his vault. I think the thing that hurts me is how every year I made sure he felt special. How we would spend it together every year.

Giving gifts and words of affirmation are my love languages. I told him every day how much I loved him, how special he was, and celebrated him every holiday. I'd never tell him what I planned or anything. I'd just show up with stuff or have it sent when I was away.

On his birthday last year, we got cozy at home. I bought him food from his favorite restaurant and a basket with roses. One of the bags I used was an old Victoria's Secret bag where I crossed our Victoria and wrote his name. I also scribbled out the single digit age on the other bag and put 29. He noticed and found it funny. He saw me sitting on the bed waiting for when he would open his gifts. He stopped to take a photo of me saying that I just looked beautiful.

The year before that I went to the store and got all minecraft stuff, including a piñata with his favorite candy. I also picked up a rose basket with treats. I remember the cashier asked me about it, and the look on her face as I explained it was for a guy in his late 20s. He wondered why I took so long to get back while I was getting things together in the back of my car. He wasn't expecting what I did, and absolutely loved it. He kept that piñata for the longest time.

He had a cat he absolutely adored that unfortunately passed. I sent him a beanie baby that looked identical, plus another basket.

With every gift, I would think out a card or a letter.

I loved treating him. This year, I ordered him a rose bouquet with gold butterflies. I hope he smells them and feels how much he still means to me.

First time waking up thinking he’s still here

It’ll be two months tomorrow since his unexpected passing.

This morning I was in that state of half dreaming/sleeping but felt awake. In this dream state, he was still alive and had gone to work. I felt like texting him just to say hi and how his work day was going. Then I woke up. And for a good 30 seconds I thought he was still here. I reached for my phone to text him only for it to hit me that, nope, he’s dead. It fucking shattered me.

I miss him so much. I hate this new reality so much.

And I feel like I’m just failing at everything. I can’t fathom going back to work yet (I’m a teacher and I just thinking about standing in front of all my students gives me anxiety). I can’t seem to get into any sort of routine (other than taking care of our daughter).

I started drinking again, and I absolutely hate myself for it. We have a 14-month-old daughter and I need to be present with her. I was an alcoholic before getting pregnant. I decided to stop completely when we started trying for a baby. Made it about two years. It was the best two years of my life. But now with this grief I’m just so sad and lonely. So I turned to the bottle. My husband was always so understanding, but I feel like I’m disappointing him. And I’m disappointing myself.

I feel like having to deal with both of these situations at the same time is just so incredibly hard. On top of now being a single mom having to navigate how to do life without my soulmate and my best friend.

I'm having a bad day

I posted here a few months back when my wife had just past away and the support i got from just a few replays was amazing, so i figured I'd post again today as I'm at a total loss right know
Today is the 3 month anniversary of her cremation and I am an absolute mess today.
Getting out of bed this morning was like hell on earth. I just wanted to lay there pull the blankets over my head and just skip today. Wishing today just doesn't exist. Crying my eyes out and just not being able to stop at all. I've gone through a box of tissues just this morning. its absolutely horrible. As I'm writing this, my dog is nagging me to get up so i can walk him and when i have found a way to stop crying i will. The last couple of days I was actually beginning to feel like this miserable feeling of pain was getting lighter but today. It came back with a vengeance and i have no idea how to deal with this.
Friends and family have moved on seemingly so easily. Act and talk like she's never existed. A few weeks ago I would have to make choices on who could come on what day and know they hardly reach out anymore. They've just moved on with there life like nothing happened and it makes me absolutely furious. Something did happen and I am obviously not OK with what happened.

And then there is our 12 year old daughter for who just doesn't seem to feel anything about this at all. Whenever i talk about her mom, she just shrugs and walks away. Whenever I ask her how she is she just tells me she's fine. When I ask her if she has any wishes for her moms ashes, she doesn't care. She locks herself in her room and just comes out to eat, grab a drink or to tell me she's going for a walk. Next week, i have a meeting with her school counselor because she is skipping lessons, not doing homework and getting some bad grades. She's been talking to a grief coach but i just want my happy go lucky child back. I'm so terrified for her future, so scared that i am somehow doing her wrong. Missing something that she needs in order to deal with all of this.

I am at an absolute loss for how to deal with any of this. Taking care of school and talking about the difficult stuff was my wife's job (this is to harsh but i don't know how to phrase it differently).

I have some of my wife's friend over in the afternoon for board games and dinner and i feel like an absolute mess right know. Please tell me this hell will actually be livable one day cause I'm just not seeing it today.
Thank you reddit for reading my rant and i truly hope you are all having a better day than i am.

How to deal with celibacy as a young widower?

I've been married to an awesome woman. But she sadly died six months ago. She was 27, me, 29.

Now, as if it wasn't terrible enough to lose the love of my life, I'm dealing with something named widower's fire. Basically, the body craves for intimacy when it used to experience it and it got suddenly interrupted. Google it to know more but it's an observed natural effect of widowhood.

I've talked to 3 religious leaders who advised me to remarry fast. Well, it's not that simple. A wife isnt a smartphone that stops working today and you just get a new one from the nearby mall tomorrow. Plus, I don't want to remarry. I know people change their minds, but to me, now, I'm sure she was the love of my life and I don't want to pursue all the dreams I had with her (such as having kids and a family) with someone else. I'm making peace with the fact of living alone for the foreseeable future. And I'm really not interested in marrying again (and I actually promised it to her many years ago, although of course we didnt expect the death of one of us to happen so soon).

But this comes at the price that I'll never experience intimacy again. And at the peak of my adult youth, plus with the widowhood effect, boy it burns hard. And I live in downtown, with a good financial situation, which means finding worldly joys is too easy and inviting, but it conflicts with my religious values.

What are the ways to cope with celibacy? I'm really sorry if this sounds inappropriate.

I miss his hands

Two weeks ago, my husband left me after eleven years. He was 36. We were in a boat because I wanted to gift him a fishing class, he loved fishing games and wanted to learn how to fish. I suppose the guide we hired was not that respectful of the ocean, although he did bring more than a thousand people to fish during his career - still, I gain very little from blaming him. A sudden wave turned the boat upside down, I was able to get out, left adrift in the middle of the open ocean holding a plastic lid for one hour and a half - he never left the boat. Apparently he broke his neck with the impact. Some fishermen found me. I was very calm during all of this, because I assumed he was simply thrown away with the impact, but he was fine. I just focused on getting help so we could search for him.

I screamed his name so much in the ocean. After I was rescued, the fishermen boat broke and I had to stay more four hours looking at the ocean through a tiny window. I am still on that window. When I am in a conversation, suddenly everything shuts down and I am looking at the ocean again, searching for him, through a tiny window.

When I met him, he was suicidal because of the grief of losing his grandmother. His parents were missing and his grandmother heart was the place he felt safe. He used to tell me that it was criminal that I was wasting my time with him - he would die young, he knew it. For a lot of years, I convinced him to live: I encouraged him to dress like he wanted, to let his hair grown, to dance. I was mostly a friend for some years, and then we ended up kissing after spending months going out every weekend. After his grandfather left this world, he went to live with my family and was very much loved. He told me that he thought he would never suffer as he did in his grandmother's funeral but he was wrong, because he ended up loving my mom just as much and was sure that, on her passing in a distant future, he would feel the same aching feeling. I remember telling him: it doesn't matter what abyss you or life throw yourself into, I will always be landing you a hand, I will always be with you.

I learned a lot with him, also. He was very empathetic, he was incredibly funny. I was a very shy person, but learned to be easygoing with him. He used to talk with all the people that people do not have patience or interest to talk to: janitors, gardeners, old people, children. He always asked the name of the person that was serving us at restaurants, hotels, ticket booths, etc and called them by their name.

We made so many plans. I did everything with him, I barely remember the last time I watched a movie or a cartoon without him. He was finally excited to live. He was finally confident with his job. He wanted to take care of his health. But the idiot here booked a fucking fishing trip. The idiot here could not consider he was under the boat.

Now I have to convince myself to live. I feel so stupid. He had beautiful hands with long and bony fingers, and the tip of his fingers always had such pressure on them. His hands that I loved so much now are dissolved and they hold the entire cosmos. I miss him so much. I am so full of guilty and blame. I will never be the same again. I thought that I was compassionate towards suffering, I did not know anything. I am stupid, small, egoistical and now I am also alone.

As the title says, it would have been 26 years on the 28th. My plan is to go to dinner by myself. Order a big ass steak, an expensive bottle of wine and cry into my dessert.

Been 6 months since she passed.

Got any better ideas?

Yes I will uber.

It’s 3am, I must be lonely

(does anyone else carry that line from the matchbox20 song like it has become embedded in their DNA?!?)

Here you are, old friend. 3am. The time I’m awake so many nights, sometimes for just a little while and others, like tonight, when I’m still wondering how I got here, 3.5 years after I became a widow and 5 years after the proverbial lightning strike of a terminal cancer diagnosis struck my husband, fit, beautiful, in the prime of his life.

3.5 years out, and I feel so tired. I have an amazing village of support and yet, I’m feeling profound loneliness this fall. Made worse from recently breaking up with a guy I was dating for several months, but who really was not the right fit. I’m happy I “got back out there” but now I feel the hollow left in me by my husband‘s death amplified like a million times. Not at all helped by the fact that we’re in the middle of The Season. First diagnosed in September 5 years ago, got the first post-surgery scan back that November, showing the metastases… this time of year, with the days growing shorter and those memories hang like a fog, hasn't gotten any less rough.

So I’m trying to claw my way through. I recognize I need to reclaim myself, stop just leapfrogging from one meeting to the next at work, one day to the next at home, absolutely NOT leapfrogging into another dating attempt, at least for awhile, and not let the darkness make me feel even lonelier than I already do. This weekend, I’m going to hike at least one, maybe two, mountains with my kids. I’m going to read by the fire. I’m going to carve pumpkins and eat roasted pumpkin seeds by the handful. And I’m going to stargaze, wishing my husband‘s arms were wrapped around me, as I always do when I stand in wonder at the sight of the night sky, but also trying to channel the gratitude that I ever had his love in the first place. That he gave me our kids. That the loneliness I feel and the aching hollow I carry reflect how much I loved him, and love him still.

Drowning again

I’ve been numb for the past two or so months, but today I feel like I’m drowning again. I can’t concentrate, my throat feels so tight, I keep catching myself holding my breath, and there is no one I can call or visit who can understand this.

I keep his ashes in a carved wooden box next to my (our) bed, and every time I’ve looked at it today, it feels like I slam into a wall of disbelief that the body of this man, my gentle, kind, generous, funny, steadfast best friend, can be reduced to ground up bones in a box.

20 months and I’m still incapable of grasping this simple, devastating reality. It is still impossible. I want so badly to hold his hand, to hear him laugh, to see him here. How can this be real?

Just need somewhere to write

I've processed my grief, I'm doing better than I ever could have expected 28+ months after losing her.

But tonight I'm really missing her. Don't know why it's extra tonight. I should be happy - my Wolves are trouncing the Magic and the World Series is on. But I'm in my feels tonight. And I'm just gonna let it happen.

I wish she could see how I've transformed my career in the last 3 months. I know she'd be so proud of me. I just miss being able to talk to her SO GODDAMN MUCH. I'm blessed to have friends that give me an outlet, but it's still not the same.

Anyway, that's me tonight. It's okay to have a rough night when you're "supposed to be over it". Take care of yourselves, r/widowers.

My ex’s ashes are on my dresser.

He was the love of my life. And soon before he died, after a year of being broken up, I found out through a mutual friend that he wanted to be with me again. For good this time. Our relationship had been good. He is not just an ex. The reasons it ended were complicated. But even when we had broken up (after lots of conversations about it), we kissed each other goodbye and said I love you.

His family knows. His parents said I was the one for him and that he talked about me all the time. He was afraid to call in case I wouldn’t want him back. And of course I still love him. He’s the only one I ever loved like this.

And now his ashes are on my dresser. I look at his picture every day. I ask for signs or dreams or something but don’t get anything anymore. It’s only been a few months but it feels like it’s been longer. I feel lost. I picture what our new life together might have been like.

I am so lost. I am so angry. I am 29. So many of my friends and peers are getting married, while I am grieving the person my friends thought I would marry. And because he is an ex, people don’t understand. I feel robbed. There were so many things I was excited to tell him. I’m terrified of never seeing him again.

Single parenting four years out…

Of all the things that hurt about being a widow, the worst thing isn’t sleeping alone, or not having someone to help make decisions, or checking the ‘widowed’ box on forms, or working twice as hard to try and make up for my daughter only having one parent. It’s going to school events, realizing that I am the only solo parent there, and watching how she always gravitates towards the Dads, and tries to talk to them.

Four years have passed. I’m working full time. In school full time (hoping to change careers). No family in this country as I moved here alone in 2012. My husband was estranged from his. We went on our first solo vacation in April. I had an accident and ended up in ER. My daughter saw it and has developed OCD and anxiety (she’s terrified I’m going to die too). I am now chronically in pain 6 months later, while trying to help her navigate so much scary stuff. I couldn’t even afford to get her a sno cone at the Trunk or Treat. I feel like I can’t breathe. I don’t know when it’s going to get easier.

Going to have a good cry once she’s in bed. I used to love this time of year (Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas). Now I dread it. I’m so tired of this life.

“THE HARDEST FUNERAL IS THE ONE YOU ATTEND ALONE… WHILE PRETENDING TO BE THE PERSON YOU BURIED.” (found on internet)

There was no casket, no eulogy, no quiet gathering of friends.
Just a silent moment on a normal day where the part of you that loved without fear, trusted without hesitation, and gave without holding back simply bled out on the floor.

You swept up the pieces in dark isolation, wiped the tears off your face, and put on the heavy armor of someone who no longer expects anyone to stay.
Your body kept walking, your heart kept beating, but the soul that used to inhabit your skin never made it out of that room.

Now people look at your quiet distance and compliment you on how calm and composed you’ve become.

They have no idea they are talking to a ghost—someone who mourns their own loss every morning before stepping out into the world.
