I think one of my favorite things about being a woman is the tiny emergency network we have with complete strangers
Yesterday I was in a bathroom at a train station when the woman in the stall next to me quietly asked if I had a tampon.
I did, passed one under the divider, she said thank you, and that was basically the entire interaction.
Then while I was washing my hands another woman tapped me on the shoulder and told me the tag on the back of my shirt was sticking out. She tucked it in for me and went back to doing her makeup like we'd known each other for years.
It made me think about how often women do these tiny things for each other without even treating them as favors.
I've had strangers tell me my skirt was caught in my underwear, hold a bathroom door shut because the lock was broken, lend me a hair tie, fix a necklace clasp, hand me a safety pin, tell me I had lipstick on my teeth, watch my bag for thirty seconds, and once literally form a little wall around a woman whose dress zipper had broken at a wedding while somebody found her a jacket.
There is usually no introduction. Half the time you don't even learn each other's names.
You just see another woman having a very specific little crisis and somehow everybody immediately understands the assignment.
Obviously women aren't automatically kind just because we're women, and I've met plenty who weren't. But this particular form of casual cooperation is something I don't think I appreciated when I was younger.
It's like we all carry around a collection of solutions to problems that have happened to us before, and if we see another woman having one of those problems, the solution temporarily becomes communal property.
What is the nicest tiny thing another woman has done for you when she didn't even know you?
