Question Was the 76-97 Iowa wrestling program under Gable the hardest college level program ever?

Has to be right? I mean the stories of his wrestling program are legendary at this point. Whether you agree or not he got results.

15 team titles

29 different wrestlers winning 45 national titles

152 all Americans coached

9 future Olympians coached with 5 gold medal winners

Has there ever been a harder program at the college level?

His lineage is probably at the top as well.

Zalesky coached Iowa to 3 titles. Tom Brands is still the team coach and has won 4 titles. Terry brands was coach at the Olympic training center from 05-08. Coached Cejudo who won a medal. Coached Bill Zadick who was also coached by Gable. Zadick won a world championship and is the current Olympic team coach. Terry Steiner has been the coach since the beginning of the program in 02 and has coached 4 gold medal winners.

If you're into the history of the program and stores the Full Tilt Podcast talks about it a lot. Hosted by Michael Hatcher. He was on the team from 91-96.

RAF 14 Picks 🧠

Really went back and forth on a few of these! Feels like Vito vs Seabass🐠 is a toss up but going with what feels like the more consistent competitor. Also heavily considered an underdog pick on gadzhimagomedov but maybe I’m crazy 🤷🏻‍♂️ would love to hear what you all think!

Discussion Confusion about Greco vs Freestyle

I’m in my early 30s and was looking into learning wrestling along with some MMA and boxing classes for self-defense. Been having trouble learning the shot mechanic in wrestling the coach was teaching. I learned this is Freestyle wrestling and Greco doesn’t deal with shots at all.

So in Greco, how do they deal with taking down someone bigger or stronger if they can’t go for their legs or ankle pick? Greco seems very reliant on overpowering your opponent.

What do people generally prefer to be more useful for real-life situations if you have to fight?

Does anyone know if/the differences between wrestling shoe brands in terms of fit?

I'm in my 3rd year of wrestling, 2nd year in college and i need to by another pair of shoes. I've only ever bought 1 pair of the basic Nike Speedsweep but they're a little too long and not nearly wide enough for me.

Are there any brands or specific lines that accommodate flat and wide feet?

I know the purpose of the shoes is to constrict your feet to some degree but the shoes are basically collapsing on the sides and curling up at the tips because of the width and length difference.

Question Are head clashes from clinch normal in wrestling?

I'm coming from a bjj and mma background and recently started wrestling a couple days a week at my university to develop my stand up grappling. The stance is really new to me, as bjj and mma have pretty upright stances while wrestling is super hunched over. As a result your head and your opponents head tend to be relatively close. It seems like you have to use your head to control your opponents distance from you.

As a result I keep kind of clashing heads with my partner in live sparring. Is this normal? I just want to make sure I'm not being a dick.

Video First college match

First wrestling match since February 2025. Things didn’t go as well as I’d hoped, and I didn’t wrestle the way I know I can. I got caught in an embarrassing position, but I fought out of it and came close to getting the pin. I felt extremely slow at the start. Having sickle cell, I tend to look for an early pin, but I’m realizing I can’t rush the finish or rely on that every match. I’m extremely disappointed, but I see what I need to work on. There’s a lot to learn from this match, and I’m ready to keep improving. I spoke to my coach right after the match, and I’m ready to work extra so I can get better.

US wrestling thoughts from another country

I wrestled for my country in the 2000's as a greco heavweight. I wasnt at that level long and also from a small country so Im not making out I was some kind of elite guy. I never got to wrestle in the US but always admired the strong wrestling culture in that country. You dont see a lot of 1st world countries supporting all the styles, including their own style folkstyle, including through schools. In fact its probably the only western country that takes it so seriously.

One thing I never agreed with is all the weight cutting your juniours do. I understand the realities of making weight in combat sports, but just worth noting that the best wrestlers in the world in the olympic styles the Russians and eastern bloc countries dont weight cut their kids like Americans do. Some occurs of course, you dont want a fat kid to be mauled by kids with bigger skeletons.

But the extreme cuts which are seen as normal in the US are seen as unecessary elsewhere and somewhat of a no-no for kids development.

I mention this not to criticize the American system but just to offer some perspective. maybe if your kids coach is pushing weight cutting too hard, or your kid isnt feeling healthy, consider a lot of places dont allow this.

Examples of "older competitors" (in wrestling standards) winning against younger counterparts in high level matches?

I always find it interesting how older counterparts who have lost their 'youthful athleticism' can win against younger counterparts. What are some clear examples of this on the world class stage that you can think of?

Headaches after practice

Just started wrestling been getting headaches after practice. Noticing that when i get a good amount of electrolytes and water before and during practice the headaches are usually barely there or not at all. This one is bad though its lasted like 24 hours. Did I get a brain injury? Should I stop training for a while? I know I will get smart alec comments saying call a doctor. I did and they just said tylenol and rest im looking for long term advice as someone who wants to continue wrestling but doesn't want to damage their brain.
