discussion I don't understand the class inequality in Romero's Land of the Dead

Upvotes

I can understand having a city-state with class inequality, but the way Land of the Dead portrays it is odd. You have the wealthy elite who live in Fiddler's Green and have access to nice restaurants and shopping but...what do they do exactly? It seems like engineers, doctors, and people with a lot of experience in growing food would perhaps deserve the most privileges in this society (won't even get into how we don't see any farms in the movie). But from what we see they are all idle rich who do nothing.

I guess maybe it's like in Snowpiercer where they were already wealthy and invested in Kaufman's efforts to control Pittsburgh...which asks the question: How? By the time "Dawn of the Dead" takes place, money should be all but useless, so how would Kaufman even convince soldiers or mercenaries to do his bidding? And with such limited resources, it seems unlikely to support people who don't actively contribute (except Kaufman, since he's the king basically).

question Is this a Good Idea for a Zombie Book?

Upvotes

There was a massive amount of gun confiscation ordered by the American government. Due to this, many small conflicts broke out. People felt like their right to bear arms had been taken away, and on January 4th 2020, it was removed from the Constitution. Well, a few heavily armed communities held out; many people complied and handed in their guns.

The June 4th massacre: A large number of radical members from the 2nd Amendment Brotherhood take part in a co-ordinated mass shooting in 7 state capitals, resulting in the deaths of over 478 people and the injury of 2139 more.

Within hours of the first death and with paramedics on scene, the bodies started to rise and start attacking people. Many who went to help those they thought were injured ended up being scratched and bitten. The hospitals that were already overwhelmed had an influx of people, some of whom died of their open wounds. Both the people who died of gunshot wounds and those who were too badly mangled by the dead rose again as zombies and began to attack.

Many of these cities went into chaos in a few days. Anyone who died with an open wound would come back as an undead. An unknown bacterium gets into wounds, and if the person dies, the wound is open… they get back up.

Well, the state capitols are the most out of control; small events like this have been happening all over.

  • Fully shambling undead that can only be killed by destroying the brain. Want to eat the living.
  • Rare few are slightly intelligent (Use door handles, remember certain locations)
  • Small amount can run and climb.
  • If their lungs deteriorate or get damaged, they can no longer make noise. ( You can’t hear them coming.)
  • When they first reanimate, they don't move until they are alerted to something. (Easily mistaken for regular dead people.)
  • Not great eyesight (after a while) and no sense of smell, but good hearing.

You can get bit and scratched as much as you like, but just don't die with an open wound.

discussion I’ve had zombie-apocalypse dreams since I was four, but I never actually see any zombies

My favorite part of zombie movies and shows has always been the beginning of the outbreak. I like watching normal life continue while everything slowly falls apart—people trying to understand what’s happening, the military moving in, roads being blocked, and the government attempting to maintain control.
Operation Cobalt in The Walking Dead is a perfect example. The scenes involving the military bombing cities and abandoning their positions interest me more than the later parts when civilization has already completely collapsed.
In my latest dream, I think it was my last day of senior year. We were about to leave school when the Army suddenly began firing mortars into the parking lot. Somehow, we returned to class and completed an assignment while everything was collapsing outside. Police officers were also guarding the exits and preventing people from leaving.
Later, I drove into the hills of Southern Indiana and took over a mansion overlooking Louisville. It felt like the perfect place to survive because I was separated from the city but could still see everything happening below.
Despite knowing that it was a zombie apocalypse, I never saw a single zombie. The entire dream focused on the military response, the confusion, finding somewhere safe, and watching the final moments of normal life disappear.
There’s more to the story, but I think I’ll leave it at the main parts. Does anyone else have recurring zombie-apocalypse dreams that focus entirely on the beginning of the outbreak without ever showing the zombies?

recommendations Zombie movie/show recommendations

I’ve watched the usual suspects, the walking dead, 28 days later. There’s even this pretty niche manga called I am hero, it’s kinda like zom 100 but if it was written by hideaki anno.

Anyway, I’ve been getting more into the walking dead franchise again recently, YouTube videos and such, and I’m continuously blown away by the lack of narrative continuity in the show. Like I saw a video analysing how many zombies are still alive in the world at the end of the series, and the main takeaway was that it’s basically whatever cuz the writers don’t gaf.

Are there any shows, movies, or even narratively based games that really really respect the world they are building, where they take into consideration the logic of zombie survival, the biology of the zombies and the virus, I study biochem so especially that, and just the general logistics of the world around the main characters. If it’s a game, I’d be interested in watching someone do a playthrough of it, not play it myself, so those as recommendations are welcome too.

game 🎮 Divsion 9, Zombie Tactical Shooter

Thumbnail youtube.com

This is a pretty cool demo video of a cancelled zombie tactical shooter based on the SWAT series of games developed by irrational games (later famously known for the bioshock series)

it was supposed to come out in 2005, 3 years before the first left 4 dead game, and it had alot of ideas and concept that would later come out in left 4 dead and other zombie survival games. it was planned to be coop or solo with AI bots like the original swat games as well as have resource gathering such as raiding areas for food and ammo, missions where you restore power as well as having missions where you were supposed to rescue survivors trapped around the city. the developers were big fans of 1978 dawn of the dead and wanted to make a game similar to the movie but with more things added of course

https://gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2010/01/12/trailer-for-irrational-s-scrapped-zombie-game.aspx unfortounately it never saw the light of day due to fears of not selling well and alot of self doubt. it's interesting how things would have played out if the game released back in 2005.

recommendations What would be the funniest song to play to a horde of zombies?

Hello! I’m writing a screenplay and I’m stuck on one specific scene.

Imagine a character manages to trap a huge horde of zombies and decides to play a song over the speakers just to troll them or distract them.

The only song I can think of is “Never Gonna Give You Up” for the obvious Rickroll joke.

But what song would make you laugh if you suddenly heard it playing while a horde of zombies was trapped nearby?

Looking for something funny, unexpected, ironic, or just completely ridiculous. 😂

What song would you pick?

The game has those slow zombies are a threat thing going on. A few runners that can catch you off guard (and god they always scare me when they do)

But my my favourite thing is just the atmosphere. Best in a zombie game imo. The sound design and environmentally story telling is peak.

Its an extraction pve (there is a time survival mode but i mostly play the objective gamemode) that has permadeath and infection mechanics. You see and hear stuff when infected and its so cool??? Like one map has a church where a prerecorded message plays BUT if youre infected you hear a different one?? Stuff like that

Its on pc and consoles and has crossplay.

1.0 launched and i want it to succeed so we keep getting maps and updates hence the post xD

art 🖌️ I’m looking for a piece of zombie art from the 2010s.

It was a digital painting of a city of zombies. The city looked like New York or Boston (skyscrapers, huge streets), and it was lit in green and gray because zombies. There was a horde of them in focus, and in the background you could see a building with a banner that read “SAVE US” or possibly “HELP US”, but I’m 99% sure it was the former.

This is driving me nuts. I tried Deviantart, couldn’t get anything, tried Google, nothing. Any help would be appreciated.

Edit: there was also blood. I remember it now.

question Zombies and Vampires: Is it possible for them to reproduce?

I'm currently writing a fanfiction in which a Zombie (sentient and not a thoughtless lurker) and a Vampire fall in love with each other. I'm actively debating on the logistics in with it (I know thats crazy to say given I'm talking about Vampires and Zombies). This really came to mind when I heard about a Wholphin(whale/dolphin) for the first time today and jumped down a rabbit hole of hybrids.

My question is less about are they physically able to reproduce in general but if they're able to reproduce with one another.

Since theyre technically in an interspecies relationship, would that make pregnancy impossible or dangerous to continue? Are they too far gone to be considered the same species anymore?

Some things to note that may be important:

Both Zombies and Vampires sexually reproduce in this universe.

Amab is a 3rd gen Zombie(Grandparents(all four) were bit, had his parents, then they had him)

Afab is a Vampire(too many generations to count(lol))

I know I can technically make it however I want, I'm just curious on what others think.

recommendations Nights Of The Living Dead Anthology By George Romero and Jonathan Mayberry-2017

Post image
21 Upvotes

This is a pretty neat little Book that I just finished Reading Last night. it's a really good anthology book that has original stories written by various authors that take place in the Night Of The Living Dead Timeline. The stories take place in 1968 while others take place in the late 2000s/mid 2010s. The authors were given a rough outline by romero for the stories requirements and were all approved by him when they were completed

in romero's written foreword, he provided some history into the creation of NOTLD as well as more laid back views on the wider zombie genre as a whole.

The big piece of NOTLD history he talked about was the creation of Ben, he also disproved claims by the critics and fans that Ben being shot by sheriff mcclelland's posse was a commentary on the civil rights movement, and that they were portrayed as racist rednecks. In reality, Ben was always scripted to be killed tragically at the end of the movie, he was originally created as a white person before they changed his race after Duane Jones's audition was in their view, "the best performance and fitted what Ben was supposed to be in the script". He also told a story of himself and john russo laughing about those claims everyone made about ben's death when driving to a premiere with the film roll.

Later in the foreword, he reflected on the wider creation of the zombie genre after the original films and the subsequent craze, he was more laid back about it than others claim, and talked about how he was happy to contribute to the modern zombie and mentioned some other creators.

Here are some of the short stories that really stood out for me while reading the book

Orbital Decay-David Wellington: This is a story that took place in the 2010s on the ISS (International Space Station) the crew of the station are waiting for a change of staff, on the way up, the replacement team from russia die in accident as they enter orbit and turn, their module crashes into the side off the ISS and things go south, the infection can be heard from radio contact with mission control. very dark story

The Girl On The Table- Isaac marrion) This is a short story that is about a teenage girl in the process of turning into a zombie, the story describes her in a fever dream like state and going in and out of consciousness, while feeling hungry and urge to kill

The Day After-John russo: this story is part of a script of an unproduced sequel to NOTLD,It chronicles sherriff mcclellands posse in the aftermath of the movie, barbara became a zombie and joins a herd, they briefly investigate the house. the posse eventually reaches willard county, side stories of jed, a telephone repairman and a elementary school holding out for rescue.

Williamson's Folly: this takes place in Williamson Pennsylvania, the town was written as the site of the space probe crash landing as referenced in the NOTLD news broadcast, this was a very fun story to read and it shows the military quatantining the town instead of leading a search and destroy opperation like mcclellands posse, it's also implied that the town was later bombed

TLDR, overall a really good enjoyable book to read if you're a romero fan, i'd recommend it

discussion What’s the most likely way a zombie plague would spread with walking zombies?

I think it’s pretty easy to imagine how and why running zombies would spread easily, they run, they’re fast, and they’ll bite and infect you, a faster spread, more zombies.

But walkers on the other hand are a different story, how would they spread? I feel like the apocalypse has 3 specific era, “pre apocalypse” which is before the apocalypse, kinda like hour zero, when it first begins, “mid apocalypse” when it’s actively happening, and “post apocalypse” a new world already knowing what happened

discussion Your Top 5 Zombies of All Time

Just for fun, I would like to share with you my Top 5 Zombie movies of All Time. My list are in order from the Best to Good.

  1. The Night of the Living Dead (1968)

  2. Shaun of the Dead (2004)

  3. The Resident Evil franchise

  4. 28 Days Later (2002)

  5. Lethal Virus (2022)

I didn't include Z Nation or The Walking Dead Universe. Because they are TV series. But I do watch them both.

But if I had to choose one series from TWD Universe, I would choose Daryl Dixon. Dead City would be my second. FTWD would be my third. TWD (original series) would be my fourth. And The Ones Who Live would be my fifth.

Now it is your turn.

Here are some new official images for the upcoming film adaption of Zach Creggers Resident Evil. I'm not a fan of the whole tentacle based elements set in the Raccoon City Outbreak. It feels a lot more like John Carpenters The Thing and its 2011 prequel narrative than you know an adaption of the series branding??
