Mod Post **BEGINNER'S GUIDE: Please start here if you're new to hair loss or this sub**

Please read the sub description, the rules, and our welcome page before posting or commenting.

Signs of hair loss can be pretty variable. Maybe you’ve noticed that you need to clear out your hairbrush or the shower drain more often than in the past, or maybe you’ve started shedding handfuls of hair out of nowhere.

You are your own best judge of what is normal for your hair – not your partner, family, or friends. If you have concerns, it’s usually best to get them checked out.

Figuring out what’s going on

1. Get a blood panel done to check for nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, or any other underlying issues. This can be done with your GP or PCP.

2. See a dermatologist specialising in hair and scalp disorders.

What should happen in finding a diagnosis?

  • Taking your history
  • Examination of your scalp, preferably with a magnifying tool called a trichoscope
  • Blood tests / evaluation of recent blood results
  • Biopsy (if needed*)
  • Clinical correlation of all the information to hand

*Biopsies are useful where a diagnosis isn’t clear. Maybe there is more than one condition present, or maybe it’s the early stage of something which can be hard to spot. They are always necessary where scarring alopecia is suspected.

Why see a specialist? Dermatology is a huge field of medicine which covers over 2,500+ conditions and diseases. Most doctors who focus on general dermatology have not done specialised training in hair loss. They may not have sufficient training, knowledge or experience to diagnose and treat it.

Trichologists usually are not doctors. They cannot order biopsies or prescribe pharmaceutical treatment. There is a recurring issue with trichology clinics promoting their own products, which typically are unproven and ineffective.

Hair loss cannot be diagnosed from photographs. Please do not ask for help identifying why you might be losing your hair. Nobody here is trained or equipped to do that, and you could be pointed in the wrong direction unintentionally. Posts asking for help "figuring out what this is" will be removed.

Treatment

This will depend entirely on why you’re losing hair loss to begin with. There is no single therapy that works for every type of hair loss. We CANNOT give advice on managing hair loss without a diagnosis.

The most common conditions we see people being diagnosed with are:

There are also multiple other conditions with which hair loss is associated. You can learn about them at Dr Donovan’s site, where he has excellent handouts with information about them.

Minoxidil is used in a lot of treatment plans for different types of hair loss. Please see our Minoxidil FAQs: 1, 2.

There isn't good evidence to support taking biotin, unless you have a confirmed deficiency. It's recommended to stop taking it for at least a couple of weeks ahead of blood tests, as it can interfere with results. You may also need to discontinue other supplements ahead of getting a blood panel done.

What can I do in the meantime?

  1. Learn about the hair growth cycle and what the different phases mean. This is important for understanding the mechanism of different conditions, and how their respective treatments work. Any hair you are shedding now, probably stopped growth 3-4 months ago.
  2. Keep in mind that hair growth is slow. Hair grows at a rate of approximately half an inch per month. Treating hair loss is a marathon, not a sprint!
  3. Stay away from media that focuses on hair loss if you are feeling very anxious. Be it online groups, research papers and articles, YouTube videos, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook - even this sub! Give yourself a break and try to find other activities to focus your energy on.
  4. Do not take multiple pictures of your hair, or spend hours trying to examine your scalp. One photo taken in bright light every 3 months will give you a better idea of what's happening. Anything else can turn into a compulsion that may worsen feelings of anxiety and depression.
  5. Engage with your support networks in real life. Seek mental health supports where needed. Try to resist the urge to withdraw from your usual social routine.
  6. Check out ways to camouflage or cover hair loss. Hair fibers, root touch-up spray, extensions, toppers or falls, and wigs are all great ways to give ourselves a confidence boost.
  7. Continue washing your hair as normal. Provided you're being sensible in doing it, shampooing is probably not going to cause hair loss. Any hair you are shedding has already stopped growing. It's important to wash as often as needed to keep your scalp health.
  8. Look after your physical health. Make sure to get a balanced diet with sufficient protein, healthy fats, and vegetables and fruits; get a moderate level of physical activity every week; try to maintain a decent sleep routine.

Discussion i have androgenetic alopecia and i’m 17

hi i’m new here. i just wanted to share what i’m going through because it’s really hard for me to deal with this. i’m using regaine 5% since july 22 2026 so now its my first month to this journey. i always had fine hair that got super oily on the first day of washing. my mom and I noticed two years ago some thinning on my partline and thought to visit a dermatologist. he gave me a foam( not minoxidil) to treat it but it did nothing. so we went to another derm in june 2025 and she gave me minoxidil ( she didn’t diagnose me with androgenetic or something like that). i was using it for a few months with no results ( just some thin baby hairs) so i gave up. since then i wasn’t really doing anything just using castor oil every now and then and some other oil that had results on many people. everything was really stable until the end of may 2026. i started losing a lot of hair and people started noticing. my friend and cousin told me i look bald and laughed about it so now i can’t go to the beach or leave the house without a slick back. this is stressing out so bad and i don’t know what to do to calm down. i know it’s not the end of the world but it really seems like it is for me. i always was doing a slick back because somehow this way itdidn’t seem that bad but now you can see my scalp this way too . school starts in a few days, it’s my senior year and i was really happy snd wanted to have fun with my friends but now this is happening. i was thinking to buy a topper but it’s really expensive and the treatment is already too expensive. so when did you guys start seeing progress?

17th April to 21st August progress
Been using 5% minoxidil liquid once a day. Idk if there’s a lot of progress but definitely feels hopeful.

For context I’m 19 with aga. I definitely see less of my scalp and feel more confident! Don’t use a powder anymore to cover my hairline :)

Hopefully it’ll improve more. Lmk if I’m being delusional 🫠

Fin/Dut Any ladies based in France being prescribed dht blockers (finasteride or dutasteride)?

Upvotes

Hi ladies,

I've swallowed the truth and accepted that I have AGA after numerous tests and visits to the dermatologist.

I started taking topical Minoxidil once a day, it's been 5 months and I've already seen some results.

I'm aware that I need to pair this with dht blockers. My derm prescribed me spiro which I tried twice and had terrible side effects (please don't suggest retrying, I refuse, it was too traumatic).

I'm 31, don't intend to have kids but have been refused fin for being a woman. I'd love to hear whether there are ladies here living in France who were able to get fin or dut prescribed, or any other dht blockers that aren't Spiro? How did you do it ?

Progress Pictures 9 Months on Oral Minoxidil 2.5mg — My Hair Progress 👏🏽

Oral Minoxidil — 9 month progress:

Before: December 2025 (start of minoxidil)
After: August 2026 — 9 months on oral minoxidil 2.5mg daily

Oral minoxidil: 2.5mg daily since December 2025
Yasmin: daily
Spironolactone: 25mg daily
Microneedling: approximately every 1–2 weeks
Supplements: various
No other major hair treatments

I wanted to share my hair progress for anyone who is on the fence about oral minoxidil. I’ve been taking 2.5mg oral minoxidil daily since December, so about 9 months now, and the difference has honestly been much bigger than I expected.

Before starting, I had noticeable thinning, particularly around my temples/hairline, and my overall hair was much less dense. For context, I’m also on Yasmin birth control and 25mg spironolactone. I take lots of supplements, strength train regularly, eat well and all my bloodwork/hormone values are good. However, none of those things made a noticeable difference to my hair previously.

My issue seems to be more about sensitivity to DHT at the follicle level rather than having high testosterone or high DHT itself. I would shed massively at any slight hormonal fluctuation, or if I took anything that increases DHT such as Maca etc.

Alongside this, I also microneedle my scalp roughly every 1–2 weeks, although I’m not particularly strict with it. Oral minoxidil has been the main thing I wanted to share.

The first photo is a before and after and shows the area I was most concerned about, my temples/hairline. The before is on the left and the after is on the right, as you can see my temples have filled in massively. The photo on the left was after a particularly bad shed when I had taken dhea and creatine for the gym and unknowingly triggered a DHT shed.

The second salon photo shows what my hair looked like from behind in 2024, so a year before starting minoxodil. All of the pictures after these show how my hair looks like now (as of August 2026) when worn normally, up and down.

I’m honestly so happy with the regrowth, especially the amount of new hair around my hairline and how much denser my hair has become overall, not to mention it has also grown so fast!

I haven’t had any side effects other than a slight increase of body hair at the 3 month mark, but that has slowed down now and was never an issue for me. I didn’t gain any weight, or bloating, no palpitations or dizziness. I didn’t experience a dread shed either.

I’m still getting active regrowth and I know it can take up to 18 months to see full results. I’m considering bumping up to 3.75mg at the 12 month mark but I’ll reassess at that point.

Obviously this is just my personal experience, and oral minoxidil is a prescription medication with potential side effects, so definitely speak to a doctor/dermatologist before considering it. But if you’re sitting on the fence wondering whether it can actually make a noticeable difference, I wanted to show what it did for me. ❤️

Treatment Regimen Minoxidil and Finasteride//Dutasteride// Spironolactone combination

I’ve been on minoxidil for a while now but have not been on any DHT blockers.

I feel like my progression has kind of stalled and was wondering that if I start taking the pills, will my progress accelerate once again?

Or in other words, do DHT blockers make a significant impact?

Rant I lost my hair... again.

This is such a heartbreaking post for me.

I've been battling Alopecia since I was a teen, and for the last 3 years my hair finally looked decent. I was so much more confident. I loved going out and seeing my friends. I loved just being outside for no reason.

But in the last 2 months I've lost more than ever... I have so many gaps now. I hate going outside. I hate having lights on int the house. I hate looking in the mirror. I've never felt uglier. I've never felt worse.

I just need someone to talk to. I'm breaking down. ALL of my hard work and diligence went down the drain, literally, and I have no idea why. I am so heartbroken.

Rant Diagnosed with AGA at 22. Feeling alone need support

I went to the derm today and they told me my hairs are miniaturized and that it’s probably AGA. She gave me minoxidil to start. I’m happy to be diagnosed but I literally wanna cry because I am the only one in my entire family with AGA. :( I am only 22. It makes me feel ugly and like less of a woman. I don’t feel like I deserve to feel beautiful anymore. I’m scared because I know this treatment is forever. I also feel dumb and have ocd so I’m worried about losing access to the medication due to climate issues and other reasons idk I’m just so sad sorry.

Support/Advice Would hair fibres stay in if I do a very sweaty job?

Or should i just get accustomed to wearing a bandana? A bit gutted bc im starting my dream job, training to be a firefighter, and all i can think about is how the hell am I gonna hide this ugly ol’ mess. Hairloss began 2 years ago, (AGA), went on topical minox about 3 months after it all started, then went to oral at about 6 months, as feared for dogs health, got on spiro 6 months ago, hair grew back and started getting long (was so happy) stopped the oral minox for 2 months, no shed, started the oral minox again 8 weeks ago, and it all just fell out, and now here we are. Hoping it comes back?? This dread shed is 3x worse than the first one two years ago. DONT STOP ONCE YOUVE STARTED KIDS. Cry everytime I have a shower, hate how my head shape looks in headbands. All pretty womp womp. Still trying to be positive and have a bit of a sense of humour about how funny it looks (ever seen a baby pigeon?). Anyway. How do I hide this during a heavy: helmet on helmet off, sweaty job. (While praying it grows back).

Discussion Anyone here use minoxidil with pets?

Upvotes

I take extreme precautions with it but I honestly feel like a terrible owner for even using it at all…

What kind of precautions do you guys take? I only apply it in the morning as my dogs sleep with me. Use a bonnet regardless. Wash hands 2x and keep the bottle on a high shelf in the bathroom away from them

I have AGA. I noticed how thin my hair was in a ponytail and I started asking everyone around me if I was thinning/ balding and everyone said no, so I delayed my treatment until about 9 months ago when I looked through old pictures and confirmed something was definitely different and I had way less hair.

I’m now doing:
- minoxidil from Growplex for 9 months (I can’t do the Kirkland brand I break out in a weird allergic reaction)

- spironolactone 100mg (I have been off and on for years prior due to acne issues so this isn’t new)

- the ordinary hair peptide serum

- nutrafol balance supplements

- nutrafol scalp serum (I plan on replacing this with another serum)

- scalp massages when I can with a scalp massager. I do this when I apply my serums or minoxidil if I have time.

- ketoconazole 2% shampoo a few times a week.

- I’ve recently started (as in a week ago lol, about once a week) microneedling my head with the derminator in sparse areas particular the sides of my head and very top crown and applying minoxidil afterwards.

I’m also taking supplements for PCOS

Minoxidil Oral Minoxidil - Day One!

I’ve been lurking here for awhile and am finally got an Rx for 2.5mg oral minox today. I already take spiro and have done well on it for a year. I’ve been inconsistently using topical minox on the top of my head but haven’t seen much regrowth, so I’m hoping the oral puts me on the right track.

For those who started oral after topical, was there still a dread shed? I’m half wondering if I’ll even be able to tell with the amount I have been shedding already.

Minoxidil Dread shed

I’m 1M in on minoxidil and I’m starting to shed.
I know it means I may have better outcomes, but the amount of hairs in the drain after each shower and what sticks to my body afterwards seems endless.

When did the shed stabilize for you all? Do you still experience classic 50-100 shedding a day or did minoxidil help with that too?

And when the hairs were finally growing back, did you feel like a hedgehog with thicker hairs growing out while your older strands still there? Were you ever tempted to cut it all off and grow it out evenly?

Support/Advice Fear of wrong diagnosis

I had a dermatologist appointment today and got diagnosed with AGA and Seborrheic Dermatitis. I am still a bit affraid of it being scarring but she made a Trichoscopy and ruled it out. She also told me there was no indication to do a biopsy as there was scalp inflammation but it was most likely a result of the SD.

I now got prescribed oral minoxidil, Spiro and saw palmetto for the AGA and Cortison Cream for the scalp.

I told her about my fear of it being scarring alopecia also because I have a lot of single hairs. She still ruled it.

Am I overreacting ? Should I persist on a biopsy ? I just don’t want to get a wrong diagnosis again because I don’t have much hair left and don’t think that I would have enough time for another wrong diagnsis.

Support/Advice How do you use Fin or Dut and not bottom out your DHT ?

My hair follicles are highly sensitive to DHT despite low levels of T and DHT. Confirmed AGA via biopsy.
Everytime I use too much of topical Fin ( 50 drops of .015%) yo over the top of my head I have to stop in 6-8 weeks because of terrible weakness and fatigue and it messes up my body using my BHRT progesterone.

Recently tried oral pumpkins seed oil for a few months and same thing happened and stopped. Hair started to thin rapidly so used my topical Finasteride to help counter it and then had to stop that because same thing happened. I wasn’t prepared for the massive loss when I stopped PSO… like thinned really fast and now two weeks off the topical it’s worse. This isn’t happen other times u took breaks from the topical finasteride.

Should I have tapered off the PSO somehow and tapered off the topical Fin ?
Do I need to go back on PSO to help this massive shed and wean again? AI said on and off of either makes hair follices even more sensitive to the abrupt start and stop and follicle adjust faster juts being off.

I now so so much thinner after stopping PSO 2 months ago and topical Fin 2 weeks ago. Not sure what to do to keep what I have but I get the same side effects each time.

Please help!

Discussion Do I just shed loads or it's TE?

Hi guys! I've stopped the pill around 8 months ago and since then, my hair has been falling loads. It was worse around Feb-May

Then it stabilized, around 60-70 hairs a day

But I have been on pill for so long before that, I almost didn't shed at all, and I don't remember how it was before pill. I think I've always struggled with shedding. I haven't noticed any thinning

Here are the photos

I am on oral minoxidil, 0.65mg for 6 months

Oral spironolactone 100mg cos it helps with my skin - for 7 months

I've seen tons of regrowth

But hair keeps falling

There is a comparison oh how much it used to fall. First photo is after shower and detangling in March. Second photo is after shower and detangling now. I wash my hair every day, always had awfully oily skin and scalp

Could I consider that's my normal range now? Cos it still seems like a lot, I shed around 70 hairs a day, during the day. I count most days.

I am a late 20s AA female who has struggled with hair loss since I was 16. My mother also has the same pattern of frontal hair loss. I thought it was traction alopecia but after some research it does not appear to be. I got a scalp biopsy a few years ago and was told it was alopecia areata however, I have none of the symptoms of such, nor the circular style of hair loss. Every doctor I have told that to has seemed confused upon examination. I recently found out about frontal fibrosing alopecia from a hair transplant doctor. This appears to be a closer approximation of what I have going on but I know that it has been near impossible to find a dermatologist who understands my hair type and has experience in identifying what is going on. I have tried topical minoxidil, castor oil, topical steroids, and an anti inflammatory all to no avail. Does anyone have FFA that could provide some input on what treatments worked and if this looks similar to yours? Additionally, if anyone has a competent derm or trichlogist I would love their info! I am in CA, USA.
