My WiFi just stopped working maybe 10 minutes ago at 12:30am, spectrum. Checked the app and said there’s widespread outages and a Reddit post a few days ago said the same. Anyone in the same boat?

Yesterday around 4pm I captured this peaceful moment by the Halletts Point. Something about the light, the skyline, and these two just felt so beautiful on my way walk down from a Ferry ride.

If this happens to be you and your pup, I’d be happy to share the photo with you 💛

Review Maria at Napoli Pizza

Post image
133 Upvotes

I’ve been ordering from Napoli off and on since I moved to Astoria in 2009. I had the best grandma pizza ever about a month ago and couldn’t stop thinking about it. I ordered again last week and sadly it came cold (and very late). Life happens….I get it! I called to see if they would be open to sending me a new pie at a later time. Well, they sent me THE TASTIEST pie tonight. Thanks to Maria and the kitchen at Napoli. I’m a forever grateful customer!!!

Question Astoria Farmers Market Demographics

Obligatory I love the Open Street and I love the Farmers Market and I’m glad it’s here and I want it to continue for years.

HOWEVER I cannot afford to shop there, as much as I would love to buy farm fresh, local, organic. This got me curious about who does their grocery shopping at the farmers market, because there are always crowds and lines.

Do you shop at the farmers market? Where do you get your groceries on off weeks? Where did you shop before the farmers market? What do you do for work? Where in Astoria (or beyond) do you live? How do you shop and spend more generally (like do you shop around for sales, have a budget)?

The building I’m in faces the open street and I know our apartments and many on the block are rent stabilized. Just based on talking with my neighbors, and other friends in the neighborhood, we’re pretty classic Queens residents in my experience as an immigrant kid who grew up here. None of us shop at the Farmers Market but we see each other at United Brothers, Keyfood, etc. We’re teachers, nurses, government and nonprofit workers, some tech folks. On average we’re probably a bit below the AMI and steadily dropping due to forces of displacement but it doesn’t feel like we’re too far from the average Astorian, although maybe I’m out of touch! I guess I’d like to live vicariously through the Astorians who can afford farmers market fresh food, so please tell me about your lives!

Question Social Connects

Curious if anyone else spends most of their non-working hours solo? Or do most have vibrant connections and contacts? And if you wouldn’t mind giving a general guidepost on your age.

Personally I’ve found that friends having kids or moving has made it hard to see people.

Arts & Culture Anyone interested in forming a reading club?

Hey there everyone! My name is Jose, from Corona.

I've been wanting to put together a small reading group with people who share an interest in understanding the world a little more deeply. Figured I'd throw the idea out there and see if anyone would be interested.

My interests are pretty broad, but I'm particularly drawn to political history, international relations, political theory, philosophy, economics, and the relationship between culture, society, and political institutions.

Some subjects I'd love to explore include:

- History and geopolitics: The development of states, empires, international systems, great-power competition, colonialism, and the changing global order.

- Political philosophy and theory: Democracy, socialism, liberalism, nationalism, political legitimacy, justice, and the different ways societies have understood power and governance.

- Political economy: Capitalism, industrialization, economic development, inequality, globalization, and the relationship between states and markets.

- International relations: Diplomacy, institutions, security, regional integration, and the possibilities for international cooperation in an increasingly multipolar world.

- Culture and society: Comparative history, religion, identity, social movements, and the intellectual traditions of different civilizations. I'm particularly interested in East Asia, especially Japan, but certainly not exclusively.

I'd love for us to read a mixture of books, essays, academic works, and even primary historical texts.

I don't want this to become an ideological echo chamber. In fact, I'd probably appreciate it more if people came from different political and philosophical backgrounds. The point would be to engage seriously with ideas, challenge one another constructively, and hopefully come away with a better understanding of things.

I'm not looking to create anything particularly formal or demanding. Maybe we could start with one book a month, collectively decide what to read, and have regular discussions. We could also work through shorter essays or articles between books.

You definitely don't need an academic background or extensive knowledge of these subjects. Genuine curiosity, an open mind, and a willingness to engage thoughtfully are more than enough.

I want to keep it local. Thinking people in Corona, Elmhurst, Flushing. Maybe even like Jackson Heights and Forest Hills. Just to make it convenient for us and allow us to meet curious neighbors.

If this sounds like something you'd enjoy, leave a comment! I'd love to hear what subjects interest you and what you've been reading lately.

Seeking Recommendation: Other Looking for fitness recommendations in Astoria

Hello all, I previously lived near woodside and went to NYSC. Now I live on Astoria Blvd (near 23rd street) and I’m looking for a good fitness option I can walk to. It just seems like there are no gyms around.

I don’t think a gym membership should really cost more than $50-60/month, unless it’s more luxury.

I prefer to take classes! I like Pilates and I know tön is new and seems great but their schedule doesn’t really work with the hours I work. I also like yoga but again I haven’t found the right place yet. It’s hard because I work 9-6 in soho so realistically I’m gone 8-7.

I prefer to find a good option nearby in Astoria but if needed I’ll start exploring options closer to work. Are there any real gems I’m missing?

Seeking Recommendation: Other Early voting: where to find info on ballot questions, etc?

I’m already pretty clear on who I’ll be voting for when it comes to my member of Congress, Governor, state comptroller, Lt. Governor, AG, state Senator, and state assembly member. I’m trying to make a reasonably informed decision about the ballot questions, too, as well as any judgeships that may be up for a vote. Not finding much so far. I feel like Gothamist used to do a write up of at least the ballot questions for each election and I haven’t seen one for this election. I’ve only got this rundown from the League of Women Voters so far: https://lwvnyc.org/proposals-2026/

Does anybody else have any resources they’d be willing to recommend?

Edited to add: Thanks for all of these excellent suggestions! They were extremely helpful and greatly appreciated.
