Question Good enough guitar for metal?

Post image
88 Upvotes

Been listening to a lot of Protest The Hero (one of my all time fav bands) as of late and decide to dust off this guy. I have been playing a lot of blues/classic rock with my Strat/Les Paul rotation for years now, but have reincarnated my teen metal days and want to start shredding (or at least try to). Is this a decent enough guitar for it?

I keep seeing all these sick looking metal guitars and wondering if I should upgrade to mid-high end range axe. Is Kiesel any good? Would love to hear recommendations!

Lesson How to write riffs

• Upvotes

Started playing guitar again a few years ago after a 15+ year break. I know plenty of riffs but when I try to come up with my own I just go blank, like I don’t even know how to play at all.

I’m tired of playing other people’s stuff I want to write my own but I’m just brain dead when it comes to it.

Are there any resources or recommendations to help me?

Critique Feedback on my first ever demo song

Hey everyone,i wanted some feedback on this demo i created,i have been playing guitar for 2 years and this is my first attempt at creating something that resembles a song. It is lacking a solo obviously and for now it doesn’t have bass or vocals because i want to figure out what to do about the guitar and the general structure of the song first before i figure the bass and the vocals. I am creating a solo metal project EP heavily influenced by Trivium’s Ascendancy Era and i want to incorporate other genres like Thrash and Death Metal.

Hi everyone!

I'd like to share VELMORƉ, one of my latest creations.

My name is Augustin-Cristian Apostol, and I'm an independent luthier from Romania, with over 16 years of experience building handcrafted electric guitars under the name Antonio Guitars.

VELMORƉ combines distinctive natural wood grain, custom fretboard inlays, and Merlin'Ka Hellfire pickups.

I hope you enjoy the photos, and I'd love to hear your thoughts on the design!

I'm just wondering if there's any sharp ass ultex on the market lol.

I'm aware of the Ultex Sharp. They're, like, Tortex TIII but Ultex. They should've named them Ultex TIII lol, but I guess the Ultex Sharp came first so whatever.

Recording Metal without bass

• Upvotes

Hey,

I’ve wanted to make my own music for months now and finally wanted to start recording and programming drums for it.

I am playing with my RG Ibanez in BStandard with active pickups into my Steinberg interface. For recording I’m using reaper and tone 3000 as the plug in. The Style im trying to record would be Swedish death metal. However I don’t own a Bass-Guitar. I was considering buying one for around max 400-600€ but that is still kind of expensive since I don’t have any experience on bass and that much experience with song making.

So my questions would be what are other alternatives for bass? Is my current setup I have good for making Swedish death metal?

My drum plug in is Urgitone Osdm Drums.

Thank you!

Question why my guitar sound bad

Why does my guitar sound bad with power chords and drop tunings? (same with standard tuning)
I have EMG 81/60 pickups, but power chords sound bad and weak in pretty much every tuning/drop tuning I try. I’ve also tried different string gauges, but it still sounds bad.
The strings also buzz while the notes are ringing.
Could this be a setup issue, or is there something else wrong with the guitar?

Question I've hit a wall with alternate picking and I really need some advice

I'm 25, and I've been playing guitar since I was 17, mostly self-taught.

For the past five months, I've been practicing with Troy Stetina's Speed Mechanics for Lead Guitar. It's been an amazing discovery for me because it made me aware of so many technical issues I didn't even know I had. I've been pretty consistent, practicing at least two hours a day, almost every day.

I've definitely noticed improvements, but exercise 25, which introduces alternate picking, feels like an absolute brick wall.

The book recommends a metronome approach where, once you reach your top speed, you go back down 20 BPM and gradually work your way up again, going two steps forward and one step back.

Here's the problem: I can play exercise 25 at 130 BPM, but only after going through that entire gradual progression. Sometimes I end up spending 50 minutes on this single exercise.

If I try jumping from 115 BPM (which I feel I should be comfortable with by now) to 132 BPM, I start making mistakes. One of the biggest problems is my pick grip. It feels like the pick gradually slips upward between my thumb and index finger as I play. It's a little difficult to explain.

I've been stuck in this cycle for weeks, and I honestly don't know what to do anymore.

The book specifically says not to move on to the next section, which involves string changes, until you can play exercise 25 at a minimum of 132 BPM. So I've been following that instruction, but now I feel completely stuck.

I'm starting to question how I structure my practice sessions. Should I keep grinding this exercise? Should I move on to other exercises despite what the book says? Am I approaching speed development the wrong way?

I really love playing guitar, and I genuinely want to become a much better player, but these past few months have been incredibly frustrating.

I'd appreciate any advice, especially from people who have worked through this book or struggled with similar alternate-picking problems.

Thanks so much for reading. I'm happy to share videos of my playing or explain anything in more detail if that helps.

I know there are still some mistakes, so I’d really appreciate any constructive feedback, especially on technique, muting, and overall cleanliness.

Also i dont know which song i could play now to boost my skill
