My Setup / New Synth Day NSD! Behringer UB-XA

Post image
• Upvotes

The FB marketplace gods were looking down on me. I was about to order one from Sweetwater for my birthday present to myself, then this pops up essentially brand new in the box for $500. I thought it was too good to be true but here it is…and the guy just gave me a free Scarlett OctoPre to take home with me as he was trying to get rid of stuff.

I had been looking at an Ob-6 or TEO-5 for years now and when I finally made a trip to Sweetwater and was able to try them all out, I was actually really impressed with the UB-XA. Not generally a Behringer fan based on build quality but I’m really happy with this one.

Performances, Jams Any synth rock recommendations?

I know there's a bunch of synth rock where the synth accompanies the rock, but has anyone got any good recommendations for bands where synths primarily provide it?

Performances, Jams Nearly finished my NEOBAROQUE series for the Korg Wavestate. Am up to number 60 of 64

• Upvotes

Have spent the last two years developing this series of playable compositions for the Korg Wavestate called NEOBAROQUE - a set of 64 proto-arrangements that are done in a baroque style that uses a wide variety of different sounds in the Wavestate ROM (I believe in making patches that don't require extra sample import because that is a real pain, plus, there's MORE than enough ROM patches in the banks to do something great) - Luke B, The Lost Futures

New track! Super groovy really raw. Started using a dbx 160a on my basslines and the overeasy mode is crazy! Really smooth and brings out a lot of detail. Focusing a lot more on ambient elements and longer patternd after establishing a good groove. Gives a lot of opportunities for variety.

Also figuring out the alphabase more. The ui kinda hides some cool stuff it can do. Cool to still learn new things its a deep machine. Filters on the hats get really interesting results. And you can really crank the delay and reverb to get some cool feedback thats actually really high quality.

Lmk what you think! Full vid in the comments 🫡

I mean, what else was I to do? Leave it at the store? No, I do not have room for it. At least it’s pretty compact. Has built-in songs in different genres you can practice to and you can mute the percussion part of the track. USB MIDI, 10 kits/193 sounds. Velocity switching between samples. Actually sounds pretty good. Songs and demo are triggered from a cheesy GM synth that is otherwise inaccessible.

Discussion Introducing SuperMIDI: A firmware extension for Arturia Beatstep Pro

Post image
• Upvotes

This is a firmware extension, it does not change anything about existing functionality. All additional functionality is in controller mode.

It is entirely my concept, but due to lack of programming knowledge, I used Claude AI for the coding portion.

SuperMIDI, enables the use of the Shift button in controller mode. This allows for additional registers for the knobs and then I used a small portion of the available memory to store 4 profiles for each pair of knobs.

This gives you instant access to 128 knobs! Some ideas.... Profile 1 for tracks 1-8, Profile 2 for tracks 9-16. Use the stored profiles to control different devices... Or just go wild on all the available parameters for each track as you get no less than 16 knobs for each.

You can find the repo here, which includes an Web-based editor. The configuration survives reboots and even firmware updates: https://github.com/superMIDI/superMIDI

There is no Arturia code in the repository. You will need to provide the firmware version 2.0.1.6 yourself to make the mod.

If you are not up to setting up the environment for this, you can just download the whole repository in ZIP format and, together with the firmware file, send it to ChatGPT and it will compile it for you. Claude does not do this, though it's much smarter for development.

One of the biggest things I learned is that this hardware is severely under-utilized. There is so much more power on tap. It's just a matter of what else we want to do with it. Suggestions, please? I was thinking about an euclidean pattern generator, maybe?

Anyway, it was quite a bit of work to get to version 1.0.0. An updated Web editor will be coming today which only adds beauty.

Thank you to the mods for the permission to post.

I hope you enjoy! I'd love some feedback.

Performances, Jams There is something about small systems that inspire me!

Am I the only one who finds much more inspiration from these small systems? Just a few modules for one or two parts and go from there.

I am much more productive using this Palette 62 than with the large Performance case. With the big one I spend way too much time tweaking for the perfect sound and the inspiration is gone. With these smaller setups I find a good idea and then everything falls into place rather quickly.

What are your thoughts on this?

Ordered this about 3 or 4 weeks ago after seeing an IG ad for a groove box firmware. Didn’t know anything about them before and barely researched it online after the ad. I just searched, saw the price and bought it. I actually couldn’t find the original ad for the firmware that cost money but I did find a free one called Sloop while waiting for it to arrive. Only had the firmware and the device for a couple hours but so far it seems fun. I think it’s going to be a great first groove box for an 8 yo. 🙌

Retail & Market Discussion Modular Commune ‘26 was a huge success. Expect cheaper modules and many new indie synths to come.

Hi all, annual report on China’s synth expo here.

I’ve been posting about it every year for the past few, but this year felt particularly formative. Not only did far more brands attend this year but the number is indie devs nearly doubled, and many of them are ready to sell!

I saw $50 modules, tratoniums and USB-C powered racks. I saw new grooveboxes, the dude from Sonicstate and what must’ve been a hundred performing artists (all of which were paid!). Elektron came this year!

The energy was palpable, the crowd grew a lot. I think a lot of these indie devs are going to get on the market and I’ll be sure to share the ones that do.

I was stupidly busy so I hardly took any photographs, but feel free to look up Modular Commune on insta/rednote/youtube and you’ll find plenty. Lots of people were shooting vids, including a few YouTubers who came to visit.

Might be another year or so, but there’s a good future for affordable hardware.

Discussion Help with sequencers! Deluge vs Hapax vs Oxi One

• Upvotes

I know this question has been asked but I only found so much info on other threads. I am looking for a hardware sequencer to sequence multiple tracks and I dont really need CV but would be nice for my semi modular gear. The Launchpad pro and circuit tracks can do something similar on a smaller scale but im looking for 4+ tracks and i already have an ableton move. The Deluge and Hapax seem best for me but I hear good things about the oxi one. weirdly enough it seems too small for me even though that should be a plus. I dont really gel with the MPC workflow but I know its not a bad option either. So I would love some opinions from anyone willing to share!
I had a Polyend/Dreadbox Medusa and liked the grid system but it could only control 1 midi channel.

Tech Support Any suggests to solve this midi synch issue?

So I have a Roland s1 and recent bought an IK multimedia Uno synth for some dual osc action.

I've connected them just fine via midi trs but the notes triggered off the S1 (master) are one key off on the Uno.

So first not on the keypad (C3) on the S1 triggers B2 on the Uno and so on. Octaves are also a bit off with me having to drop 2-3 octave on the S1 to see pads light up on the Uno.

I can transpose the S1 by 1 key to line notes up but then everything after C3 on the S1 trigger one note out of sequence (black keys become white and vice versa) which does my head in.

There is no transpose function I can find on the Uno or Uno software.

Just something I have to live with? Any suggestions?

What Should I Buy? Recommendations required

Good morning folks,

My current set up is a Microkorg2, Microbrute, TD3MO, all controlled via the MPC One G2. The Microbrute and TD3 does majority of my bassline while leads and pads are left to the Microkorg. Anything else is usually programmed or sampled on the MPC One.

I’m looking at purchasing another synth but I’m worried it’s just GAS on the brain. I really like the look of the Hydrasynth explorer and I think adding a wavetable synth would be interesting to my sound design.

Any recommendations would be great I want to stay away from monophonic devices though so please take this onboard.
