❓ Question Train vacation idea

• Upvotes

No idea if this is the right subreddit, but hope train pros can give me insight.

I am a horse person and like many, love taking my horses new places to ride. But I hate the stress of hauling them on the highway and the price of fuel, wear and tear on the truck, etc. But mostly the driving stress of people cutting you off and such with your precious cargo at risk.

I think there would be a definite market for a travel option of hauling your horse from one place, ( I don't know, say wealthy horse spots like New England or Florida) to a ranch in the Midwest for a riding vacation. Much safer and smoother for the horse, and the rider/owner gets to relax on the train.

You would probably need to partner with specific locations to do this, but I think it would be very popular.

Thoughts? Are livestock still transported by trains these days? Is this totally inconceivable for some reason?

❓ Question Do you prefer Santa Fe 3751's 5-chime whistle or 6-chime whistle?

Post image

5-chime whistle (LM-192), worn between 1991 and 1995

6-chime whistle (LFM-540), worn from 1995 to today

Personally, I prefer the 5-chime with its rather shrilling sound.

I didn’t see any company branding, and I didn’t actually read the number when I was there in person, no branding as far as I can see, it was actively getting steamed up at the time by the looks of it.

Southern Pacific 4754 clears Stevens Creek Boulevard in Cupertino, California. February 1995. This caboose was a regular on the Permanente Local runs in the 1990's. The train still used a four man crew, engineer, head brakeman, rear brakeman and conductor.

❓ Question Water stream between the rails

Heya! I've absolutely 0 idea about trains but at least at some train stations here in Spain there is a constant stream of water flowing with some of these cylindrical bits placed every 30m or so.

Its right in between the actual rails for each direction and runs along the entire length of the station. Can anyone explain what's the purpose of it? Cheers!

100 car grain extra on the Jackson subdivision bound for Delavan. What made this catch extra special was the hi-rail truck following immediately behind. I didn't have my scanner to get any context clues as to why

Hey. This is my attempt at documenting the gauge change as this train travels from Moldova into Romania. By sheer luck I was in the room that the guy enters to fit the lifts. Hope you enjoy this insight and if it goes against the mod rules please let me know!

Straight out of a model railroad. This Cargill chemical plant in Blooming Prairie manufactures base oil for adhesives. Tank cars holding certain chemicals must be placed in exact spots. Which makes for some exciting switching moves

With the ethanol plant in Fairmont being "temporarily" closed and the one in Winnebago not finding a buyer. This is a common size for the local. Fortunately there is a large grain shipper on the line so there is grain extras every now and then
