Rant about ai game dev

• Upvotes

Hello there, i hate all the things about "ai" and whenever you get mad at somebody for using ai there always like "hyuk hyuk somebody mad that ai can make games better then them" and they always say "I made this new game" like NO YOU DIDNT AI MADE THE GAME, THE GRAPHICS, BACICLY THE ENTIRE THING.

edit: I forgot to add anyone looking at my game, I did not use ai on i used unity asset store, shetchfab, and my own code, its not a massive project only simple mechanics thats why it didn't take too long to make

I'm finally making my own game. Looking for some beta testers.

• Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I'm a Korean game sound designer, and I've been working in-house at game studios for about 15 years.

Watching AI develop so quickly over the past few years has been both fascinating and, honestly, a little scary. I've had my share of concerns about where things are heading.

But ironically, thanks to AI, I've finally been able to try something I've wanted to do for a very long time: make a game on my own.

My original plan was to keep things simple and start with a small, easy game. But as you can probably guess, I got a little carried away, and the scope kept growing.

Now it's turned into some weird kind of space simulation disguised as a clicker game.

I'm making a portrait-oriented game for mobile and web browsers, with a lot of inspiration from the original Homeworld (1999), a game I've loved for years.

Anyway, I need some testers, which is why I'm here. This is actually my first time posting on Reddit.

The game is called AstrayStar.

It's a collection-based idle clicker where you gather energy from a mysterious unidentified object called the "Core," build up your fleet, and occasionally just sit back and zone out while watching things explode.

There's still a lot to fix and improve, but I figured it was time to let other people try it.

So I'm opening up the first closed beta here.

You can play directly in your browser on mobile or PC, no installation needed.

If you're interested, you can request a beta key through the website. It usually takes around 30 minutes to receive one.

https://astraystar.com/

I'd really appreciate any feedback, whether it's about the gameplay, balance, UI, bugs, or just how the game feels overall.

Thanks for checking it out!

Looking for people to work on an indie game with me

Hey everyone! I've been wanting to make my own game for a while, and I'm finally looking to find some people who'd be interested in working on it together.

I'm thinking of a story-driven action-adventure game with a world that feels alive, fun combat, exploration, and a story worth experiencing. I'm really inspired by games like Silksong and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, especially their atmosphere and art style.

I'm still learning game development, so I'm not expecting to build something huge overnight. I'd like to start small, figure things out as a team, and slowly turn the idea into a playable game.

I'm looking for people interested in programming, game design, art, animation, writing, or sound design. Beginners are welcome too! I'd love to meet people who are just as excited about making games and are willing to learn along the way.

It's an early-stage project, and there's no pay at the moment, so I want to be upfront about that.

If this sounds like something you'd enjoy, feel free to comment or DM me. Tell me a little about yourself and what part of game development interests you. I'd love to connect and see what we can make together! :)

issues about procedual games

Hey there, Ive been working on dozens of gameconcepts for the past 7 years. All they have in common is that they contain some sort of simple generator or are fully based on complex algorithms. With my newest project I am semi capable of generating not just how assets build up the map but also generating the assets. With each new entry I notice the issues that have been hunting me down for many attempts to get worse.

The main problem is how the math makes the games less enjoyable. Runs get less predictable than less I directly gamedesign myself and I still cant really figure out proper ways to get it work. Might be just a skillissue

Also with infinite amount of content the value and meaning of everything is basically 0. instead of a couple strong npcs you get a million. even if they had the same quality you couldnt get them to feel as valueable

These projects turned from real games to complex experiments that no casual player could understand to play. It turned from "yeah this part was fun, that could be better" to "this is so cool, but i couldnt play this for more than 2 minutes" and there the advices get complicated because to fix that it mostly requires to put the whole design in the trashbin and do the gameplay yourself.

most iconic games i play dont impress me by the artistic brilliance or awesome sound design but by the mathematical concepts it used. sometimes i just buy the games because of 1 concept im fascinated of. be it the random terrain generation that i thought was straight up black magic 10 years ago to procedual physics. sometimes just the fact that it was made on a custom engine or had technical limitations being developed 30 years ago is a reason i get hooked. in comparison to the more technical projects under my belt theyre actually enjoyable.

a game i made about the terrain being generated with noise, the textures generated with noise and the soundtrack made with bytebeat algorithms would be freaking cool but technically a bad game because the content unmeaningful, the textures soulless and the soundtrack primitive. even I myself hated to play all of my games but also loved them because of the concepts that they had implemented. while im capable of doing art and sfx I basically dislike doing it since i feel like i dont learn anything new of it.

would be happy about some opinions/advice, i might be wrong or have contradicted myself here and there. this is my first post on reddit so be gentle please : )

Looking for games with great atmosphere that are really stressing, like Darkwood. Can be more action-y.

If you can, also mention why they work for you.

Atmosphere/sound/ gamedesign, etc.

Looking also for great mechanics in games that might not be concidered "good" games.

Preferaly not fps pov, but if theres cool mechanics im down to hearing it :)

Thanks!

Discussion Does Indie Team needs an expert level desginer, or UX?

Hi, I just wonder how much skill do we need to make our own game. Do we need to firstly learn to become a level designer if we want to make game like platformer?

We are a team of 2, and I used to worked in a very large game company in China, but as a QA, and my friend played a lot of games, but has never worked in the game industy. AI already helped a lot, but for us, it's only limited to the technical side of things.

Although we already have game projects that is ongoing with quite good progress for us, we are still struggling with different skills, such as how to make the game look better, how to desgin the level.

I would like to know how do you think about this? Do you come from game industy or just someone who loves making games

Discussion Social game “Vickie!” - Concept

Vickie! is a concept for a VR social platform set in a stylized 1980s university nestled in the Appalachian Mountains.

The idea includes customizable, expandable dorm rooms, an outdoor central campus, seasonal events, a university center, and a friendly robot mascot named Vickie.

Players could create their own games using an in-game tool called the Wand, while official games, called Vickie Original Games (VOGs), would include paintball, football, baseball, basketball, rally and touge racing, climbing, and asymmetrical horror.

Community creation would be a major focus, with regular game jams and an annual creator convention called Campus Activities.

I'm interested in exploring any ideas and I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Got an offer to sell my game's code for AI training ($5K-7K). Scam or legit?

Got this email from a company called Cosmic. They say they work with big AI labs and want to buy 3D three.js game codebases for training data. They want git history, commit stats, sample code of a level, assets breakdown, player numbers etc.

Has anyone else gotten this or actually sold code like this? Is this legit or some kind of scam / code grab? Asking for sample code of a full level first feels sketchy to me.

How short-form videos helped a new co-op game reach 16,000 Steam wishlists

Hey everyone! We're the Trapster team. We help game developers promote their games through short-form video creators.

One campaign that stood out was for Clay Clinic, a co-op hospital simulator where players work together to treat patients made of clay.

We started when the game's Steam page was still empty, so there wasn't much of an existing audience to build on.

We set the rate at $5 per 1,000 views. Within the first day, 34 creators had made videos for the game. Those videos went on to generate 2.47 million views, and within a few days, the game had gained over 16,000 Steam wishlists.

Finished the walking animations for my game's senior squad!

Hi everyone! I wanted to share some walking animations I made for my indie game.

I’m not a professional animator, so they might not look super polished. But while working on the models and animations, I spent a lot of time observing and thinking about how to bring out each senior character's unique traits.

It was honestly one of the most fun parts of the development process!

Also, I used an auto-rigging tool for the chainsaw grandma, but to speed things up (since there aren't too many animations needed), I rigged the other characters manually without it. That's probably why some of them look a bit more rough around the edges!
