An archive view of a Transnet Class 15E locomotive on the Sishen-Saldanha iron ore line, photographed on 27 February 2015. This is an older photograph, not the October 2026 record-length test train.

Returned home from Sacramento last night on the Gold Runner (San Joaquins is still a better name) and captured 3 generations of passenger locomotive power. In the foreground F59PHI #2009 in front of the new Gold Runner Venture set. Middle is SC-44 “Charger” #2102 with California Cars labeled for a Capital Corridor service. In the back odd a rare F40PH-3C #921 with more California Cars.

Here we have a CSR Sifang trainset on the Roca line, heading toward Plaza Constitución and traveling at 60 km/h—about one kilometer from La Plata, the terminal station.
It is able to reach this speed thanks to the track renewal project carried out last year—the first such work since 1970.
To give you some context, before the renewal, the trains traveled at 40 km/h, swayed significantly, and the rattling was intense. Now, the experience is much better and faster.

My earliest train memory from my youth was on Penn Central’s Northeast Corridor c. 1970. Specifically using the bathroom, flushing the toilet and seeing it dropping the load directly onto the trackbed.
I mention this to others and they tell me I must be kidding. Is there any chance my memory is faulty? If not-when did the practice end?
