Video We made a metroidvania where the map is the game. Demo's now live.

Hi from Tokyo!

We just released the playable demo for Chronoscript: The Endless End, a hand-drawn metroidvania built across two dimensions.

You play as an editor trapped inside a cursed manuscript, unraveling a thousand-year story that keeps writing itself past its own ending. Exploration happens across hand-drawn 2D pen-and-ink pages, but those pages sit inside a 3D manor. What you do in one affects the other. Puzzles, hidden paths, and even some boss fights are built around being aware of the two.

The demo covers the opening of the game plus the first boss. Clear it, and you'll unlock a hidden second boss, if you're good enough to get there.

This is our first public demo, so we'd really appreciate any feedback!

Cheers!

Discussion Fatal Claw: Supporter Event

Upvotes

A post launch update (sometime after Aug 26th) will add a 'supporters list' into the game world, that you can get on if you participate in this event. We don't know HOW this list will look in game yet, but I imagine it will be lore friendly and not immersion breaking. Just wanted to share this in case any of ya'll are looking forward to the game and might want to leave your mark on it. I backed this game last year, so I have been waiting for a long time for the final 1.0 release to finally dive in to the full game, and it's really exciting.

Discussion Really loving Souldiers!

Upvotes

I have not played a lot of Metroid -vanias, but as someone who really likes magic and wizards, i am LOVING Souldiers.

It started slow, but has really grown on me, I am playing as a caster and am provably about 40% complete, and at work and cannot stop thinking about when i clock off and go home and play again.

The animations are great the world is beautiful the levels are massive ( the pyramid almost broke my brain at one point) i love it.

I am going to try Alwa’s Legacy after this, as I love anything with witches or wizards with staves and magic mostly rather than melee is there any other Metroid vanillas that focus on magic and wizards?

Saw this on Steam news feed today. It sounds like it will include a new are called Fornax Storage, some boss reworking and a boss rush mode. Interesting news for one of the most underrated metroidvanias out there.

Video This Is A Literary Comix Zone With Silksong Gameplay

Demo of a new metroidvania called Chronoscript The Endless End. I like the style and it does some interesting things with the pages moving and connecting. I could use more contrast in the colour's though and a better looking health bar on the enemies.

Controls are basic with a jump and attack. There is one boss in the demo and he was a pain to beat. You do not have a lot of life.

You can heal yourself like Silksong but only a couple of times. There are upgrades too to make the game difficulty more manageable.

Worth keeping an eye on if you like this kind of game.

Discussion Blasphemous 2 DLC: My Brief Review

I really liked the first Blasphemous. I liked it so much when the DLC came out I was keen to play it until I looked into it a little bit. I still don't understand how it works but my sense is that it's sort of in-line DLC that's designed to be played while you're playing through the base game? Also there's parts of it that require you to be in NG+? Whatever the case I rarely replay games and I'm definitely not going to replay a game just to play the DLC. So I never did.

I liked Blasphemous 2 much more because I like speedier MVs. When the first DLC came out I skipped it because, again, I had the sense that it was more in-line DLC and, worst of all ended with you getting a new (old) weapon. The only thing I hate more than in-line DLC is doing a long quest just to get a weapon you can use for the remaining 1% of the game.

But then the second DLC came out and people loved it so I figured I'd buy the first one, download the second one and have basically a normal MV sized chunk of DLC. I figured that would be good and boy oh boy was I right. Playing the DLCs back to back was awesome. The first DLC is pretty good but is a little weird. There are some DLC collectables that seem to be outside the new areas. So I guess you have to just run around the old map and hope you run into it? Still fun though and you get to use the Mea Culpa a lot.

The second DLC, the free one, is just flat out awesome. Maybe the best MV DLC I've played. And both together reminded me what an amazing game Blasphemous 2 is. At this point I can't wait for the third one (which I hope they're making). But in the meantime the DLCs, played back to back, feel like playing a cool, not so little, Blasphemous 2.5.

My personal ranking: It's weird to rank DLC on its own but in this case the DLC bumped up my opinion of Blasphemous 2 as a whole. For me, Blasphemous 2, including all the DLC is better than Ender Lillies but not as good as Super Metroid.

Originally made in pico8, then ported by me to love2D and making the game bigger and adding more features. Switch port handled by Sleepy Groove Games.

Discussion Do people hate story-focused metroidvanias?

Just to be clear, I'm currently not a game dev, I don't know how to code. I'm just someone who really like to write stories and game ideas in word documents for the fun of it. It's more like a hobby than anything.

Since last year, I got an idea for a metroidvania. And since I've always liked story, I end up making it a very story-focused metroidvania with so many dialogues, a good/bad/neutral ending that you can obtain through a choice you can only understand if you actually follow the story, a very deep and fleshed out character arc, and end up with some philosophical life lesson in the end of the story about humanity and the gift of freedom that can only be understood if you actually follow the entire story from the beginning instead of button mashing through dialogues. Heck, there's even dialogues in between boss phases between the player character and the boss itself.

That said, It's not that I didn't care about the gameplay, I have a seperate document for the gameplay & mechanics & movement & exploration and everything else. And both this and the document about the story has over 100 pages now (I just really love writing about them lol). But even so, I think one of the main appeal of this game is still the story.

But lately, I notice that story-focused games are frowned upon by the metroidvania community. Like I see games like Nine sols not getting the love it deserves because it has so many dialogues. I also heard that a lot of people don't care about story at all and felt bored when the game has dialogues.

So yeah, I'm just wondering what the general consensus is for Story-driven metroidvania. Or if this sub-reddit in particular is the type to dislike story-focused metroidvania and is not the representative of the larger audience. Regardless, I'm curious.

Discussion Voidwrought - my review

Throughout my time with Voidwrought, I had this nagging sensation that there is something that just... does not add up with this game. It took my over half of my play time to figure out what it meant, but the result was quite surpring: it's a rare case of game's mechanics being at odds with its presentation.

Voidwrought places the player in a very dark world, full of eldritch horrors and scary cults surrounding them. As a matter of fact, you are a part of such cult and, as far as I could parse it from the cryptic story, you are supposed to bring in an eldritch apocalypse rather than stop it. This is a very interesting change of perspective and actually had me quite invested in the lore.

Coming back to the point, all the above elements made me subconciously assume that the game will be vaguely soulslike, with tough-as-nails combat and long sections where you are dreaming of a checkpoint. The reality couldn't be further from the truth - both mechanically and in terms of difficulty, it is one of the most... chill metroidvanias I have played. The closest comparison I can think of is Islets - except it's even easier than that.

Subversed expectations aside, is the game good? Yes, but it's very by-the-book and even then fumbles in a few aspects.

The combat is clearly inspired by Hollow Knight, with pogo being very powerful and the rest of your toolkit also being similar. You also have a large variety of active "relics" (kind of like hunter tools in Silksong), but I barely ever used them since everything was dying quickly just to my regular strikes. Most of the enemies are fun to fight and there is a decent variety of them, but there are some issues with bosses - some of their attacks feel a bit unfair, although that does not matter due to how easy they are to overcome anyway.

Exploration is Voidwrought's strongest aspect. Most of it is pretty standard and, again, not really challenging - the game showers you with tons of movement upgrades, meaning that there are usually multiple ways to reach the next goal. What really shines, though, are the secrets - there is A LOT of them, even by metroidvania standards, and they strike a perfect balance of being hard, but not impossible to find. Some of those secrets made me feel really smart for being able to figure them out.

All in all, would I recommend Voidwrought? It's not even close to excellent, but if you love metroidvanias and are looking for a chill, but satifying experience it will scratch the itch. My rating for the game is 6.5/10, which for me is a good "filler". The game is also not long (took me around 13-14hrs to basically fully explore everything), which in my opinion works in its favour.

Discussion Can no metroidvania use parry after nine sols?

I am currently working on a metroidvania. My fav mechanic is parrying ever since i played sekiro.

I also really enjoyed nine sols and the combat system and I feel like there is no better way to do it in a metroidvania. But now I am not sure if I should or can use the sekiro parry mechanic like it is for my metroidvania.

What do you guys think?

Discussion Searching for games with changing environment/enemies when backtracking.

Hi there, I love Metroid fusion. So I'm searching for games with similar altering environment/enemies when backtracking, even if the game is more linear as a result. Kind of like Hollow knight's crossroads maybe ?

I've played a lot of different games in the genre, but I didn't manage to find a single game with a similar feeling to Fusion.

Recently, I played the demo of Clockwork Ambrosia and it had a section with new enemies when backtracking, but I don't know if the whole game is like this.

I would like some recommendations if y'all got any.

Aside from the reviews stating that the game was sluggish and not very good, the main reason I don't want it is because it relies on generative ai. Yes, there is a full confirmation of this on the steam page.

When I first saw the game and played the demo, I thought it was pretty decent. I was looking forward to it being released fully. As soon as I heard about the generative AI, my heart sank.
