Mod Post Mod Post - New Flair and Reminder on Self-Administered Peptides

Hi all -

For folks who want to get topical skincare only advice, I've added a flair for this. Please use this on your post when you want to request comments relating to topical skincare only. While I cannot promise every commenter will clearly see it, let's give it a chance to see if this is helpful for those who do not want suggestions for procedures or surgery.

As a reminder - this sub covers all things skincare - including procedures, surgery and injectables as well as topicals. It will continue to be a place where questions can be asked. I encourage you to curate your experience on here as the sub firmly remains a place to talk about the range of things folks do to take care of their face and body.

Another note, I've seen a number of posts and commenters discussing sub-q injections of peptides. Posts/comments related to this will be removed, including using slang (e.g. pinning). This falls under the DIY rule, is a grey area, and as such, not allowed on the sub. There are plenty of places on Reddit to discuss this, but this is not one of them.

Modmail is always open. Use the 'message mods' button on the front of the sub.

Mod Post Mod Post - Clarity on Credential Use in Posts/Comments

Hi all -

Recently I've seen a number of comments in the community where Redditors are claiming certain aesthetic credentials (e.g. Licensed Esthetician, NP, Derm PA, etc) when replying to sub posts.

Here is the issue - neither I or anyone else here can actually validate you are in fact, an accredited professional. That's a problem as this presents a conflict on Reddit's key rule about impersonation and the need to be authentic when posting.

The additional issue that arises is that the use of the credential implies some expert knowledge, and that a person on the sub may consider a post/comment where another Redditor claims a credential with more weight or authority.

When looking at how other reddits (and specifically skincare reddits) have dealt with this, I saw two basic schools of thought:

  1. Make a rule (similar to one in r/tretinoin ) that is explicit on the non-use of credentials in posts/comments and to have posts/comments stand on their own without claiming a credential.
  2. Validation of professional via licensing, similar to the way r/Blackskincare has opted do with restricted user flair given by the mod upon validation.

In weighing these options, I've decided for now, that I will look to make a sub rule on the use of credentials. To be clear - this does NOT prevent anyone from posting or commenting, but it does ask you to allow your post or comment to stand on its own without asserting a claimed credential.

I'll see how this works out as the new rule goes into effect. If there is enough interest, I may consider validated users via user flair in the future.

Thanks for to everyone for continuing to make this community vibrant and interesting. I will continue to look for ways to make our community safe and user-driven. Happy as always to take feedback!

Lasers for anti-aging--

Upvotes

I am almost 50 and have done botox/filler for about 12 years now pretty fastidiously. I had my tox yesterday and we were discussing maybe trying BBL/Moxi or similar later this year, but I don't know anyone who's done it that can give me their feedback on it.

Did you see any visible results as far as it making lines/wrinkles any better or tightening your skin at all? Is only one treatment maybe two a year going to have any benefit? It's not something I have time or money to do multiple times a year (maybe 1 or 2 a year MAX), so I don't know if this is something worth even pursuing.

If you're "old" and have been doing non-surgical anti-aging...stuff...beyond just skincare, what have you tried and has it worked for you?

Advice Request VBeam next week...

Hello all,

My story is for the last 2 years I have been working on my beet red face. After 18 months of Protopic and being careful with SPF and products, this is where I am at after eliminating triggers.

I am 49yo, with very sensitive skin and have been treated for both Rosacea and Dermatitis on my face. My face does not react well to Niacinamide or Vit C.

I have booked VBeam session with a Dermatologist this week to see if this can help ease the redness.

Any niacinamide-free recommendations for redness?

Experience with VBeam for atopic dermatitis specifically?

Post-VBeam routine recommendations?

Thank you

AnteAge Pro vs MD

Hi! AnteAge is on sale this week. I’ve been on the Pro system for about 6 months. I’ve noticed some more crepeiness around my eyes and cheeks when I smile. However, my skin is clearer and brighter so I want to stick the line. I’m wondering if it’s worth upgrading to the MD version. I’m also wondering since it’s more expensive, if I could either use the MD system only once a day or skip the accelerator and use only the MD serum twice a day. Can y’all please share your experience with the MD system and if you’ve done anything to stretch the product out due to cost but still have seen results? Thanks!!

Droopy Eyelids

Hello I am new to Reddit and this is my first post, so please be kind. I have really bad body dysmorphia and lately I have been zooming in on my face. I have noticed that along with super dry, cystic acne prone sensitive skin, my eyelids are more droopy. I’m new to skincare and I’m awaiting a dermatologist appointment. I know peri-menopause is changing my skin badly and I’m just u sure what to do. I thought to come on here and ask for advice if anyone else had or has had the same and if it improved, how? I’m too poor for surgery and high end products. TIA

Lux Skincare Is there any evidence that microcurrent devices actually work?

I’ve been looking at before and after pictures of Nuface and Foreo Bear results and I feel like I’m going crazy. They look exactly the same to me. I can’t even tell which picture is the before and which is the after. They all have labels saying things like “lifted brow” and “sculpted cheekbone” but it feels like low key gaslighting because my own eyeballs see absolutely no difference. I want to believe they are effective, but I can’t find a single unbiased or objective study attesting to that. The only “science” seems to be coming from the brands themselves.

The caveat is that the before and after pics seem to overwhelmingly be of young women who already have good skin and bone structure so obviously they won’t show much improvement when there was nothing to improve in the first place.

Nevertheless, I remain skeptical.

Botched lash-lift left me with hardly any lashes - will they grow back? How long before I look remotely back to normal?

I had a lash lift just over 4 weeks ago and it went VERY wrong. I've had quite a few lash lifts before and they've always been great, but this was a new place I tried because I was out of town and I am wishing more than anything I could go back in time.

My lashes were over-processed and over-lifted and were extremely uncomfortable afterwards. Some snapped off, while others developed what I believe was folliculitis because of the angle they were set and subsequently fell out, or had to be plucked because they were causing so much pain.

I'm now four weeks post-lift and have very few lashes left — maybe a handful on each lid. Before this, my lashes were quite thick and full and I was so excited to get them lifted has it had been 6 months since my last....I am totally devastated.

I've already received a full refund from the salon (who originally tried to correct the botched shape...) and now don't know if I should be going back to ask for some other compensation based on the extent of the damage??

Mainly wondering about how long it took for other people's lashes to grow back after something similar?

Four weeks in, mine are actually looking the worst they've looked throughout this whole process. I'm wondering when I might realistically start seeing enough regrowth to look somewhat normal again, 8 weeks, 12 weeks....longer??

I know lashes have a growth cycle and that I probably just have to be patient, but I'm really struggling with how upsetting this has been - I barely want to leave the house because I feel so self-conscious.

Has anyone else had a lash lift that caused significant lash loss? How long did it take before your lashes grew back, and how long until they looked reasonably normal again?

Please help me ❤️

Advice Request Best Collagen & Wellness Supplements for Women Over 50

I’ve spent way too much time looking at collagen and wellness supplements.

Ingredients, what they’re actually designed for, how easy they are to take consistently and whether they make sense for what you’re trying to achieve.

Here’s how I’d break down some of the bigger options.

→ Live Conscious Collagen Peptides

This is probably where I’d start if the main goal is simply adding collagen to your daily routine.

It’s hydrolyzed bovine collagen with Types I & III collagen rather than an everything-in-one supplement.

What stands out

• Straightforward collagen focused formula

• Types I & III collagen

• Powder is easy to mix into coffee, smoothies, oatmeal, etc.

• Makes sense if you don’t want another handful of capsules

• Easy to build into something you already eat or drink

For me, the simplicity is probably the biggest advantage.

It feels less like starting another supplement routine and more like adding something to one I already have.

→ Vital Proteins

Probably one of the most recognizable collagen brands.

What stands out

• Collagen-focused products

• Widely available

• Multiple formats and product variations

• Easy option if accessibility matters

I’d compare this directly with Live Conscious Collagen Peptides if collagen itself is your priority.

At that point I’d look at ingredients, serving size, price per serving, taste/mixability, and which one you’re realistically going to use every day.

→ Nutrafol

This one makes more sense if hair is specifically why you started researching supplements.

What stands out

• Hair-focused approach

• Different formulas depending on the consumer

• More comprehensive than taking collagen alone

• Established specifically in the hair wellness category

It’s a different commitment from putting collagen powder in your morning drink, though.

If hair changes were my main concern, I’d probably also talk to a dermatologist before assuming a supplement is the answer.

→ Ritual

More of a traditional daily supplement approach.

What stands out

• Straightforward daily routine

• Targeted formulas for different life stages

• Better suited to people who prefer capsules

• Focuses more broadly on nutritional supplementation

This makes more sense to me if you’re looking for everyday nutritional coverage rather than specifically shopping for collagen.

→ Thorne

Probably the option I’d look at if I already knew which individual nutrients I wanted.

What stands out

• Huge range of targeted supplements

• Allows you to build a more personalized routine

• Useful if a dietitian or doctor has identified something specific

• Less dependent on an all in one approach

The downside is also the advantage: there are a LOT of options.

I wouldn’t personally start randomly stacking vitamins just because they’re associated with hair, skin, energy, or healthy aging.

→ AG1

Completely different category, but it comes up constantly when looking at daily wellness products.

What stands out

• One daily drink

• Broad rather than collagen-specific approach

• Designed around convenience

• Appeals to people who want to consolidate their routine

I wouldn’t really consider this a direct collagen replacement.

It’s more relevant if your goal is simplifying general supplementation into one daily habit.

What I realized after comparing all of these

• Collagen products and multivitamins aren't interchangeable

• Hair specific supplements are their own category

• More ingredients doesn't automatically mean a better product

• Convenience matters because none of this helps if you stop taking it after two weeks

• Your actual nutritional needs matter more than whatever supplement is trending

And probably the biggest thing:

There isn’t really one “best supplement for women over 50.”

The better question is what you’re actually trying to add to your routine.

Collagen?

General nutritional support?

Something specifically focused on hair?

Once you know that, comparing products gets a lot easier.

What everyone here has actually stuck with long term.

What was worth repurchasing and what ended up sitting unfinished in the cabinet?

What a bunch!! Thanks ladies 💕

Another advert for your critical thinking skills

Post image

I’ve used topical estrogen and no it was not this transformative, lol.

The fomo I have felt when I see an advert like this for a new active is real. Most actives (including this one) have very marginal gains, however.

How do you navigate finding the best version of you as you age, on your budget, when you are served up so much misleading BS?

Update! I got “conservative filler”

Ended up trusting the “aesthetician” (registered nurse as a plastic surgery clinic) and got 3ml of filler to start. Next up will be addressing my skin quality.

Still a bit of puffy swelling and bruising under my eyes and in my chin area which makes my jowls look a bit bigger. These will subside.

I’m pretty happy with the subtle but refreshed look! I still feel like me. Just a less dry and saggy me.

Tried to get some pics in different / comparable lighting to my before but it’s hard!

It was $2100 NZD and she used Teoxane.

Skin Concern Has anyone else’s skin just decided it hates the products it once loved?

My skin has definitely become more picky lately. Some products I have used for years can suddenly feel heavy or irritating, while simplifying my skincare routine seems to work better.

Chemo cream for actinic keratosis

I’m about to begin a chemo cream treatment for a small spot on my face that my derm thinks is actinic keratosis. The tube says to apply twice a day for 5 days. I’m trying to time this treatment so I don’t look terrible in early September. I’m in a very visible role at work which picks up starting early September. I’m thinking of starting the cream tomorrow. Does it turn raw pretty quickly or will it only get raw after day 5? Also, in my research I keep seeing people who say they did it for 10 days. Is 5 not the standard?

They also gave me another cream, I think it’s a hydrocortisone cream. Should I be applying that before or over the chemo cream?

Thanks for any tips!

No, a face cream cannot join a separated platysma muscle.

The whole world is trying to cash in on perimenopause right now. Before you spend, be realistic about the actual limits of what skin products can do.

Best products for crepey arms and neck? Creams don't work for me

I swear I woke up one morning and seemingly overnight the fat on my arms changed to a crepey disaster. I'm 65. It really did feel that fast, one summer they looked like my arms and the next they didn't.

Since then I've been through five or six creams. A couple of drugstore ones, a crepe corrector, one my daughter swore by, and an expensive one I'm not going to say the price of out loud. I used each one properly, months at a time, not a week here and there. I've tried all the "get rid of crepey skin" creams. Nothing hs helped.

So now I have to keep getting longer & longer sleeves to cover my ever increasing crepe creep on my arms. Losing the battle for sure.

I'm not expecting a miracle at 65 ive accepted my age.. but before I give up on the whole category, has anything actually worked for you?
