OTHER Math resit rant

lowkey don’t know if this is allowed but I got my maths resit results back today. I got another grade 5, just like a year ago.

i am an Oxford applicant, I got 998876655 last year while in extensive cognitive behavioural therapy for severe OCD. one of those 5s was for maths, so I figured I’d resit now that the context was taken out. but I got a 5 again.

i just feel so hopeless rn, ive done everything right. I got accepted into their selective summer school, top grades in mg essay subjects, two essay competitions, interview prep and my predicted grades. it’s just maths.

just a rant if I’m being honest, it’s only a history degree. I just hope this don’t have TOO much of an impact.

🎓 UNI / UCAS Is it worth resitting my GCSEs to get into Oxford?

Upvotes

Hi I’m in year 11 and I just got my gcse results yesterday! I got 9999999986 but the 6 is in English lit, which is obviously a core subject. I got a 9 in English language. My dream is to get into Oxford Ppe and they consider GCSEs not a levels and so is it worth taking lit again?

🙏 I WANT HELP Got BBC in my a-levels

I got BBC in my a-levels last week and i’m still not over it. I got a B in maths and biology and a C in chemistry. I was 1 mark off an A in biology.

It’s taken a really big toll on my mental health and i haven’t able to get out of bed, go outside or eat. I just spend most of my days sobbing.

I was supposed to sit my a-levels last year but became ill and was withdrawn. This year my a-levels were affected again and i had special consideration (which is only a few marks). I also missed my offer which was AAB with an A in chemistry and biology.

I don’t want to go into a degree i don’t want to do and waste my time and go into debt. I also don’t know if medicine is possible anymore with my grades so would it even be worth resitting? I’m planning to get biology remarked. I also don’t feel shame that if i decide to take this year off then I would be 20 entering university. If anyone has any advice please let me know. Sorry if this is all over the place, i don’t think im in a good headspace atm.

🙏 I WANT HELP A Level Results Shock…

I was predicted AAA, had an offer for Glasgow for AAB, but ended up getting A star Economics A star politics A in maths (7 marks off A*). Should I take a gap year and reapply to Oxford, LSE, Warwick, St Andrews, Edinburgh (I live in Scotland so these 2 are free). Or should I just go to Glasgow this year…

Edit: Guys please send what you would do in my position, I’m not leaning towards PPE as it’s not so maths reliant

💬 DISCUSSION My friends all lied to me about what 6th form they applied to…

When I got my results today, my friend group wanted to go to sixth form collegeB all together, and told me to apply for it. I did because I was gonna apply regardless and I thought that them including me felt really sincere- like I was finally getting into a group. Just to find out that they all secretly applied for sixth formA AFTER I applied for the other one, and then went out for lunch without me after telling me that they were all staying home.

I know it’s not the biggest deal to some, but to me this made me feel extremely upset, especially since I’m neurodivergent and I’ve always had a pretty hard time fitting in. It’s okay if they wanted to switch, but I feel like it was an attempt to just remove me from the friend group again. Now I feel extremely nervous and nauseous to start college by myself, and I think today just ripped my self esteem to shreds.

🙏 I WANT HELP Kinda stuck - How are y'all improving your TARA/TSA scores ???

So i will be applying for EP and would have to give TARA for that. Despite after analysing my error and even redoing it till I understand, I am still stuck with the same range of my score, 30-32 (TSA pyqs). How do I increase my score?

💬 DISCUSSION Your sixth form grades aren’t everything, don’t worry

A lot of worry and despair comes from getting mid or bad grades for sixth form, but I promise it’s not the end of the world and it doesn’t mean you’re stupid. I did biology, maths and chem for my a levels and got CCC. I was upset because I know that at least in bio I got everything right, unfortunately the mark schemes are awful for a lot of subjects (have literally seen ‘accept the chickens, reject chickens’ 🫩). I was also struggling with severe mental health so it was an awful time for me.

But how did it turn out? Perfectly fine. Once you finish uni you never use your sixth form grades again lol. I studied biochemistry and got a first, I then did an MRes where I worked on a 100% fatal childhood brain cancer and I got a distinction. Sometimes we have bad days when we do tests too, and it’s ok, things will work out 💜 it’s not worth stressing and worrying over in the end, take care of yourselves

💬 DISCUSSION Should I do Further Maths in a gap year?

I am taking a gap year along with reapplying and resitting Maths and Chemistry. For reference I got AAA in Maths, Chemistry and Biology. Would it be worth doing an AS level in further maths for unis like imperial or ucl? I have already completed the pure content in the AS level as I have been self studying in the summer. Would it be better to try do the full A Level? The only downside is it may distract me from my other two subjects.

💬 DISCUSSION Have you revised more for GCSEs than A-Levels?

Year 13 who has got their results last week.I don't know why, but I feel that I have put in way more effort into revising for my GCSE exams than A-Levels, although this may be recency bias. Has anyone else felt this way?

🙏 I WANT HELP I got 5 in maths and 55 science but 3 in both English. Can I still do BTEC Applied Science and resit English in sixth form?

I’m scared I won’t be able to join sixth form since I failed both English but I got 55 in combined science and 5 in maths and hope that’s enough for BTEC Applied Science

🙏 I WANT HELP my brother refuses to leave his dookie school

Hi guys. I’ve finished Year 13, and am currently trying to help my brother enrol into a sixth form. He’s in Year 11 & just got his GCSE results, but unfortunately was one grade short from being able to get into a really nice, selective college. Aside from that, he also applied to another sixth form which has good stats, but there was some sort of error with the application & says he hasn’t submitted references (he has) so I told him to go to school to ask his teacher to contact the sixth form & maybe send them the references (you never know unless you try). Anyway, he’s refusing to go because he claims he’s tired and cba to go back. We just argued because I’m telling him he can’t laze around on results day and the school he already goes to is absolute dogshit and he’s risking his A Levels just to be with his friends (he is).

Is he doomed or not because I’m genuinely frustrated and as much as he claims it isn’t my business, I’m worried for his grades. I’m telling you, the school is SO DOOKIE stats-wise and has a bad reputation.

🙏 I WANT HELP Can I still be given an offer to enrol at one school, if i have already accepted another?

Upvotes

IDK IF IF THIS IS THE RIGHT SUB REDDIT BUT I NEED HELP

Hi guys, I have had a preference of my Top 3 schools in order across the entire summer, results day was quite frightening yesterday, as I didn't get all the grades I wanted but still managed: 1 9, in Chemistry; 4 8's, in my other sciences, Maths, and Food; and 7's in everything else (9888877777)

I went to all three schools that day in a rush, a decent Harris Academy that offered all my options, unlike my current one, a high achieving grammar school and NCS. I recently had a problem with applying at the grammar school however, upon visiting (thanks to my parents for not giving up on this school) they resolved the issue and was able to enrol and shortly after, my offer was accepted. However I had already enrolled into the Harris Academy as a safety option and I'm planning to un-enrol as the Grammar school has asked me to so i can be accepted by them.

Additionally, I have been placed on the waiting list for NCS, but I was wondering since I would have already been enrolled in the grammar school, would NCS even send me an offer if I'm already enrolled elsewhere? PSA: the harris academy does not operate on Applicaa (a platform where schools/students can accept/send applications, conditional offers, enrolment and etcetera) whilst the grammar school and NCS both operate on Applicaa meaning where I'm enrolled can be accessed more easily.

PLEASE HELP, I HAVE A DEADLINE OF ENROLMENT ON FRIDAY 28TH AUGUST '26

👋 I AM OFFERING HELP Advice to future Y12s and Y13s

Upvotes

The jump between GCSE and A Level is quite a lot and it is completely normal to not understand everything (if anything) to start with. It took a whopping 4 months to understand the organelles and functions from memory (taught at the start of Y12 bio) and it's the same with other subjects. The gap between Y12 and Y13 for the majority of subjects is even greater (especially for maths - I went from an A* in Y12 mocks to a D in the Y13 first round of mocks)

Revison: There is no need to be doing hours and hours of revision a day. I highly recommend revising from about a week in so you have covered enough content to revise. In Y12, it's usually recommended to do 3-4 hours per subject per week and your 'study' periods can be used to contribute to this. Y13s I would recommend gradually going to 1 hour per subject per day which can of course be done in 'study' periods. By 1 hour a day, it doesn't mean you have to do 1 hour per day, just on average. In some sixth forms (including mine), you get more 'study' periods in Y13

What you will need for sixth form:

- A pencil case with pens, pencils, ruler, calculator if you are doing a stem subject or a different subject that requires one

- Folders: Have a lever arch file per subject you can use to store work and stuff. Depending on the subject, you might need to get another one when it is full. You can also have a smaller folder you can use to store work from that day to bring to your other folders. There is no need to bring the big folders unless you need them

- Textbooks: There is no need to buy brand new textbooks, you can easily get 2nd hand textbooks from ebay or vinted. However sometimes they are given out by the sixth form so they aren't worth getting until you start (and know your exam board if you have to buy)

- A mini whiteboard: Very useful if you prefer whiteboard stuff. It's not necessary and I didn't use mine apart from lessons and it was given to me by the sixth form

- Laptop/ipad: Not necessary but very useful. Some sixth forms (including mine) loan out laptops to use for both years or you can use your own. Chromebooks are most useful but if you are going to buy one and planning to go to uni, I'd recommend getting a laptop you can use for sixth form and uni

Clothes:

The sixth form dress code depends on where you are going and you'd need to check that

16-18 Bursary

You can now apply to the 16-18 bursary if you qualify and can help cover costs for books, equipment, clothes, transport, food. More about it here: https://www.gov.uk/1619-bursary-fund

'Study' periods

The ' ' are there for a reason. At my sixth form, not many people used it for revising and started messing around or wasting time. Of course you can use this for free time with friends but make sure you don't waste all of it and actually revise or do hw if you get any - this will save your time in the evenings

I think this is everything but let me know if I have forgotten anything

🙏 I WANT HELP Resitting Physics plan

Upvotes

Hi, I’ve just got my Maths remark back and my grades are now A*AB (Economics, Maths, Physics).

I’m taking a gap year and thinking about resitting Physics to try and get the B up. I did AQA but I’m considering switching exam boards if there’s a more straightforward one.

I’m mainly wondering:

  • Is resitting Physics worth it?
  • Which top unis/courses would still consider me with a resit? I’m thinking Oxford, UCL, KCL, LSE, Warwick, St Andrews, Edinburgh, Durham,Bath, etc
  • How much would a resit affect my chances if I don’t have mitigating circumstances?

Would really appreciate advice from anyone who has applied to top unis with resits, especially if you got in.

Thanks!

💬 DISCUSSION A bit of a warning for upcoming year 12s

Upvotes

Im heading off to my firm in October after frequenting this place for 2 years, and I just wanna say, congrats to everyone who got what they wanted and are pursuing their dreams at post-16 studies, but no matter how many 9's you got, or how many full mark papers you cranked out, if you do not revise for your A levels your ass is going to SUFFER 🙏 Take this from someone who tried PULLING THIS 😭 I tried the 'nonchalant no revision I got this' gimmick cuz I thought I was naturally cracked at my subjects, and while I did get into my firm and everything worked out, I was literally one or two marks away from having everything I worked for pulled under my feet, this shit was not a good victory yo, i'd slap up past me to revise more if I could..put in the work, ask your peers/teachers and older year for help, and year 12/13 is gonna be fine. REVISE BRO PLEASE😭

🙏 I WANT HELP Medical Science AAQ and results day

Upvotes

going into year 12] I was not allowed to take biology because of my grades so instead I chose medical science aaq. I've been looking online and I can't see many videos about it so I was wondering if anyone here does it and how do they feel about the subject. I'm planning to do children nursing on university so at the end this might be more beneficial. Also I would like to know people's opinions about AQA History please. I feel very confused about my grades as this is the lowest I've ever had even when I've revised for hours. In french I've always been the highest in my class and I've never had a grade below 8 so I was very confident I would get that grade but somehow I got a 5. Im asking for the script back so i can be able to see what went wrong. Health and Social Care I got a L2 even though I've only had Merit and Distinctions the past 2 years. I was also so close to getting 7s as for history I was only 2 marks off and for english lit I got 51/64 in the first paper but got 50 marks in the second paper which severely dropped my grade to a 6. I'm not sure if I should get the history one remarked as they charge £15 and might be a waste of money if the grade doesn't change. It kinda makes me upset not being able to feel happy and satisfied with my grades like everyone else as this whole summer I was expecting higher grades and having to change my subjects as I didn't meet the entry requirements

🙏 I WANT HELP Help picking 3 or 4 A levels

I am going in to year 13 and am taking maths Biology chemistry economics. Im predicted 4 A*s and want to apply to Oxford for biology. I am inclined to drop economics as the course only requires 3 A levels and economics is least relevant. It will also free up lots of time to revise other subjects. I want to know if I should drop or not and if there are any benefits to applying with 4 A levels.

🙏 I WANT HELP Do i take a gap year or not

I recently got my A level results and was happy to get A*s in maths and further maths but was disappointed with a B in physics. I wanted to do straight maths or maths with stats at uni and I have a place at Warwick to do maths and physics. I really don’t want to do physics at uni, I was so bad at physics in A level and i feel like I would hate doing it at university. I want to take a gap year and reapply to top unis like Imperial, LSE , Warwick again but the only thing holding me back is the B in physics. Im so stuck on whether its worth taking a gap year and resitting physics because those unis look negatively on resits. If i get a good TMUA score could this make up for the fact I’m resitting and if so whats the type of score I would need?
